Thousands of customers in Central Mass. were without power into early Tuesday afternoon after heavy winds brought down trees and power lines. Overnight gusts hit a high of 62 mph in Mendon and at Worcester Regional Airport, according to the National Weather Service. Fitchburg recorded 54 mph gusts, with Sutton (48 mph) and Webster (46 mph) also reaching potentially damaging levels. The heavy winds, although not as intense as Monday night, continued into mid-afternoon Tuesday. Public works crews throughout the region responded to reports of road-blocking toppled trees late Monday and early Tuesday. Overnight, a large tree fell onto a house at 2 Birch Road in Westboro, damaging the structure, but not causing injury to the occupants, police said.
