Houses and buildings in the Icelandic town of Grindavík caught fire after being surrounded by lava on Sunday, January 14, 2024. Drone footage showed the extent of the damage caused by lava emitted from the ground, after two slits were opened near the port of the fishing town. The town had already been successfully evacuated overnight and no lives are in danger, although infrastructure may be under threat. The erupting volcano on the peninsula is the second in less than a month, as authorities had ordered residents to leave the town in November 2023.
