A native of Thomasville, Alabama, she lived in the village of Cazenovia for 20 years.
She graduated from Alabama A&M University and the University of Wisconsin - Madison. She served as director of multicultural resources at SUNY Morrisville, before being appointed to SUNY Upstate Medical University as assistant dean of multicultural affairs.
She was a former member of the Southern Leadership Conference, the NAACP and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and was a lifetime member of the sorority Delta Sigma Theta Inc. and a lifetime member of Links Inc.
