The state Department of Public Health said in its daily report that Massachusetts had 4,985 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 Thursday, including 87 on the Cape and Islands. State public health officials said there were 45 new deaths among people with coronavirus — 44 among those with confirmed cases and one death of a person with a probable case. The fatalities include one death in Barnstable County on Cape Cod, where 212 people with COVID-19 have died since March. Statewide, the number of deaths among people with confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 has reached 11,558. The average age at death of such a patient is 81, state public health officials said.
