Trader Joe's spokesperson Kenya Friend-Daniel said she could not confirm the new store's address, but said, "we are excited about the opportunity to bring a store to Yorktown Heights, and are taking the necessary steps to make it happen." In a statement, Slater called Trader Joe's "a national brand that will undoubtedly provide a major boost to our economy. "I have repeatedly heard from residents that they wanted a specialty grocer," he said. "When the town board launched the 'Destination Y' marketing campaign last year, it was precisely to encourage the opening of destinations like Trader Joe's." The store will be located in a 12,500-square-foot building in the front of the shopping center. Currently, the site has a retaining wall and large piles of dirt surrounded by a fence. In January Slater said the then-unnamed grocer had a goal of opening in the fall; he did not offer an updated timeline Tuesday.
