He has pledged 274 million for yemenis who are affected by the threeweek long war. Saudis are spearheading a coalition of arab countries to overthrow Houthi Rebels and their allies. Their spokesman called on all sides to respect aid missions. We hope everyone will respect the aid operations the houthi militias try to disturb them. We call for everybody else to respect and observe all the channels that are open for contact and coordination. The world food programs country director says the grave security situation is making it difficult to reach people who are in desperate need of help. We have information of about 2 Million People who are extremely vulnerable at the moment. We have food trucks that could reach out to about 300,000 people in the coming days. Right now, we are our distributions are taking place in aden. However, the security situation is so grave that the people who are out doing the distributions are finding it very difficult to reach out to those communities. There are people who are displayed even living under trees because their houses and shelters no longer exist. Meanwhile, the Saudi Coalition has continued its air strikes against the houthis in yemen. Reporter three weeks into Saudiled Coalition war against Houthi Rebels its been a similar story every day. On friday columns of smoke rose over an arms depot targeted by war planes east of the capital. The facility belonged to the Republican Guard which remains loyal to president al saleh. Strikes have also targeted the palace as well as other cities. We reject the houthis. We will not leave here except victorious and we will die fighting. Reporter amid the violence is the civilians who are paying the price. The United Nations says about 150,000 people have been driven from their homes and more than 750 people have been killed. Across the country, at least 50 public buildings have been partially or completely destroyed. Eight hospitals have been hit and 17 institutions have been destroyed. The countries main power station as well as its airport have all been destroyed. In afghanistan, two explosions in the eastern city of jalalabab has killed at least 33 people. The first exploded outside a bank where Government Employees collect their salaries. A suicide bomber detonated near the gate. An hour after that another bank was targeted just 16 meters away. So far, no claims of responsibility. Lets go live now to jennifer glass who is in the afghan capital, kabul. Reporter they have the hal marks of the taliban but the taliban denies that they are responsible for this attack. The taliban often deny attacks that kill civilians. A very grim warning in jalalabad. It could have been much worse. Just after that first attack that targeted the kabul back at about 8 00 oclock this morning local time here they were people lined up outside. That attack killed 33 people. The interior Ministry Said they found and dismantled two bombs on bicycles and that the death toll could have been much higher. In the just the last half hour or so another car bomb has gone off killing two people. It is a bank as you said that is responsible for paying government workers and this is the end of the month when the salaries come in. What kind of message do you think is being sent by those who carried out these attacks . A sustained attack by all accounts on this eastern city of ofof jalalabad. Reporter this is the time of year when the attacks ramp up. Last week 30 Afghan Army Soldiers were killed in a taliban offensive. This a very bold attack in the center of town at a busy part of day. There was an attack earlier this year late last year. It is the bank that is responsible for salaries of the government of the police so it is considered a government target. But certainly the fact that civilians were killed lining up trying to get this pay at this very delicate time in afghanistan just six months into president ghanis presidency. He still doesnt have a new parliament. Today theyre voting on new ministers. So theyre very concerned about what direction afghanistan will take. Jennifer glass, live in kabul staying in afghanistan, five people have been beheaded in the southeast of the country. The men were kidnapped on wednesday. Theyre part of a Minority Group in afghanistan and are often targeted. No group has claimed responsibility for this attack the United States has condemned a car bomb attack next to its capital in iraqs kurdish territory in the north country. It killed at least three people. U. S. Officials said no consulate staff were harmed. Isil has claimed responsibility for the attack meanwhile in rhamadi in the western part of iraq isil fighters are holding on to their recent gains despite air strikes by the u. S. Coalition and a new iraqi offensive launched last week. This is video of military jets flying over suspected isil positions. Irans president has addressed the nation during the celebrations of the countrys National Army day. During the address to a military parade in at the ran, they spoke about the ongoing conflict in yemen and criticized saudi arabia which is leading an air offensive against Houthi Rebels and he said the country will harvest the hatred its sowing in yemen. The other nations should learn from the iranian army. They should not attack children. They should not attack all people and women in yemen. Attacks on the innocent are a disgrace for the aggressors. In relation to our nuclear program, we would like to demonstrate to the world that its a peaceful program. Were not an aggressive nation. This year is the year of coordination and collaboration along side each other. Lets speak to the head of north American Studies Graduate Program at the university of at the ran. He joins us live now from the iranian capital. Can we start by looking at the fourpoint plan that has most recently being sent in a letter to the u. N. Security council to end the war in yemen. But its not gaining traction. Why . The main problem obviously is the saudi regimes constant bombing of targets inside yemen. Theyre destroying hospitals, factories, dairy factories, and they bombed gas stations and burned people alive in one single attack. So as long as the saudis are carrying out this shock and awe campaign against ordinary yemenis, theres really no hope for any sort of peace plan to work. So the iranians are waiting for the saudis to run out of steam and to recognize the enormous mistake that theyve made. But the saudis have already pledged to meet the u. N. Request for humanitarian assistance in full in fact 274 million for the next three months. You must take great heart from that. Well thats a great joke of course. Theyre like the israelis when they slaughter the people in gaza the israelis also speak about humanitarian assistance. And the israelis use the same sort of language of targeting terrorists and so on but we all know that they were targeting ordinary people. The saudis though have made a grave mistake. Theyre much weaker than the Israeli Regime inherently and yemen is much larger and the houthis are a much larger population. The iranians believe that the saudis are mobilizing the people of yemen against them and in general the contempt for the saudi version of islam is something that people are beginning to become more aware of. In yemen, saudis are fighting on the same side of the battle field as is al quaeda and all the news reports youve just now shown in afghanistan and iraq and the beheadings in iraq. These are common interests. The sunnis fear that the iranians are supporting the houthis as a bid to extend its influence not just in yemen but in the region as a whole. No these are not sunni. These are wahabi and theyre not the populations. Theyre its a familyrun country, saudi arabia. Its named after the family. Indeed. But do you deny iranian involvement then in the domestic situation of yemen . No. In yemen, its the people of yemen who look the former president that the saudis are backing was never elected. He was installed by the americans and the saudis. He was the only candidate in the election. He was only supposed to be a transitional president for two years. Ultimately, he was forced to resign when the popular committees the houthis, and the armies took the capital. There was no blood shed because he had no legitimate support. Now the saudis are bombing the country because of some illegitimate president installed by them. The yemeni people want independence. Can i draw you on one of the central questions in this conflict what is exactly the role of iran in yemen . The role of iran in yemen is similar to the role of iran in libya, syria, iraq afghanistan, iran is opposed to the rise of extremism. Iran is opposed to isil and al quaeda and it supports the popular elections in yemen just like it supported elections in syria. The americans destroyed the plan because they thought they could steam roll into damascus. In libya, you see the same problem. In nigeria, boko haram, all these groups they all come from the same ideology and the same country. So you say ivan not seeking to extend its influence in the region but combat what you describe as extremism. And the iranians support popular movements. In yemen, its a popular movement. Iran is very far away from yemen. Saudi arabia has a huge border. Yemen is one of the most poor countries in the world and now even poorer and devastated and the saudis have held them back for decades. Its not one group. They are trying to make this a sectarian issue but the reality and everyone knows the reality in yemen that the people of yemen are opposed to the yemen. In the south there are even more grievances than in the north because of the southern movement. They have faced saudi aggression for decades and theyre making a grave mistake. All right. Im afraid were going to have to stop there. Thank you very much for joining us from at the ran. Thank you we have a lot more to come here at al jazeera including christians in iraq racing to save some of their religions oldest and most sacred artifacts. Plus zimbabwe marks 35 years of independence. Independence. Welcome back to al jazeera. The king of saudi arabia is ordering humanitarian aid be sent to yemen. Reporter winding through the hills in Northern Iraq one of christianties most sacred sights comes into view. This is the monastery, once home to a line of christians who governed much of southern mesopotamia. Isil will destroy this historic place. Its so important to iraqs history and to christians. Reporter just 12 kilometers away is the front line with isil. The kurds who in the 18th century ransacked this place are now protecting it. This monastery is made up of a series of caves and carefully preserved because this is a very important pilgrimage site. But very few tourists visit because of the danger. They came and they told me that you have just you have five minutes. And i take my clothes, this and my passport and this five books and this. Reporter we tracked down the arch bishop of mosul who agreed to show us some of what we saved. This bible is handwritten in aramaic. This is the name of the father and son and the holy spirit. Reporter and if that call continues to go unanswered he says the legacy of the first people of this country will be wiped out. South africa is appealing for support from other african nations to help stop the attacks against migrants. These people must go and commit crimes back where they come from but they dont draw people where they come from. What does that mean . Is that right for the government. Those in government just worry about themselves and not us. Were not going to allow this to happen. Reporter fear is spreading in south africa. Im in downtown and its been the scene of the worst violence certainly here today. Behind me these men are locals. Theyve been burning tires, theres a burnt out vehicle here as well. Quite a heavy police presence. Now, the men we have spoken to have vowed to kick the foreigners out of this area. Earlier police used steel bullets and tear gas to keep the locals and foreigners apart. This is one of two car workshops owned by nigerians that was set on fire. The government has promised to put an end to the violence against migrants. Police are investigating Text Messages allegedly inciting hate against foreigners. There is fear and increasing anger among foreigners here. We cant continue like this. Ethiopia has condemned the violence we all feel we have contributed for the liberation of south africa so africans should come together and live where they want to live. Of course based on the populations of that specific country. Reporter no matter what politicians here and across africa say, theres little to stem the fear of migrants in south africa today. A lot of people in zimbabwe looking for employment. Zimbabwe is celebrating 35 years of independence of British Colonial rule. Reporter hes an outspoken critic of the president. Hes been missing for 40 days. His family say he was abducted by unknown men in zimbabwe. The government denies having anything to do with the disappearance. His family are suspicious. At least if someone dies you know theyre dead. You bury him. That gives you closure. But in your particular case in this particular instance we really really are finding it hard. Reporter zimbabwe is celebrating 35 years of independence but some cant believe people can still disappear seemingly without a trace. The abduction of the type is repugnant, it is something that is disgusting in a country that is supposed to be Democratic Free and have adopted a new bill of rights that should be respected. Reporter freedom of speech and human rights are not the only issues on their minds. A lot of them are in neighboring south africa looking for employment. A tax on foreign migrants are worrying. But despite the violence people still cross the border with south africa out of desperation. After 35 years of independence many say they do not take their freedom for granted but others say they do not feel like celebrating when theyre struggling to find work and provide for their family. Reporter the employment rate is under 20 but some say the figure is somewhere between 90 and 80 . The president has ruled since 1980 pushing ahead black economic employment policies and damaging what some say was a strong economic economy. Theres also speculation about the Failing Health of africas oldest leader. Some live well and say after 35 years of independence life is good. But millions are struggling economically. For them they say the suffering continues. Now, a year ago, an avalanche swept 16 climbers mainly guides to their deaths on mount everest. New routes are being pioneered to try to prevent a repeat. I will never make sure they work on the mountain. Ive had enough. I grew up without a father. I know what it is like to be fatherless. Now my children are fatherless. Reporter it was the worst single disaster ever on the mountain. It attracted a lot of attention on how sherpas are treated. The original 400 of compensation by the government was taken as an insult. A year on the government and climbers have been forced to recognize the value of these men. Yielding to the pressure the government finally gave the family of the victims 15,000 compensation. Their insurance provision has also been increased. A new route has been explored z to avoid avalanches. The route we are using this time is the very old route. It is about two hours longer than last years route. Reporter but some mount near its not just about increasing salary and insurance. Reporter its open for business again.
