ALJAZAM Real Money With Ali Velshi June 17, 2014

Investments. Real money. This is real money, you are the most important part of the show, to tell me what is your on your mind. Iraqi forces continue to lose ground to sunni rebels in the countrys north as the United States considers considering with iran. The Northern City today fell to the isil. Iraqi Security Forces loyal to the government have failed to defend the countrys sunni Populated Areas in the north and west from the isil offensive but have managed to stall the drive toward bagdad for the time. John kerry said the u. S. Would weigh all options in response to the unfolding crisis in iraq, all options except for troops on the ground. Already the u. S. Has ordered an Aircraft Carrier and a transport ship into the persian gulf. And kerry hinted today at air or drone strikes on isil targets. But the fastmoving situation on the ground has washington openly suggesting cooperation with its iran. This week diplomats from both countries are meeting in vienna to hammer out an agreement over irans cointreau controversial nuclear program. This is a classic case of the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Isil started out as a terrorist outfit after the u. S. Envieded iraq in 2003, but since the itself left they have morphed in to a effective fighting group. Their goal is to create a single state in the region ruled accord sharia, but has gained support by playing off sunni resentment toward the shiite dominated governme government. Tens of thousands of iraqis have lost their lives in reoccurring spaszmentes of violence. And more than 3500 soldiers lost their lives in that war as well. Reporter when the u. S. First sent troops into afghanistan in 2001, declared a war on terrorism, and then envieded iraq in 2003, it expected the missions and cost of the war to be limited. The prediction was way off. The Bush Administration projected in 2003 that the iraq war would cost between 50 and 60 billion. More than a decade later, congress has appropriated 1. 5 trillion for operations in iraq and afghanistan, and defense spending has increased. In 2001, military expenditures made up 3 of u. S. Gdp and got as high as 4. 8 before reseeding to where it stands now. Some economists say the costs are even higher. One report puts the true cost of the war in iraq and afghanistan between 4 and 6 trillion. Along with military operations that includes medical and disability costs for veterans, social costs for their families, indirect costs to the defense department, and interest paid on the money borrowed to fight the wars. In the end critics are asking what did all of that money buy . It seems to have bought us trouble and bought the people of iraq a very different kind of country, one that is really quite fallen apart in comparison with the situation however invasion. Reporter and given the Current Crisis in iraq, its likely the u. S. Will continue paying. The cost of iraqs instability could go even higher. David newton was the United States first ambassador to iraq under ronald reagan. He has a 36year diplomatic career which also included a tour of the u. S. Ambassador to yemen. He joins us now from washington, d. C. Ambassador, good to see you. Thank you for being with us. Two administrations in a row have bungled their dealings in iraq. What are americans not understanding about iraq that is causing these missteps . Well, first of all our ability to influence event there is pretty limited. After all we were not able to keep troops there. Iran has increased its influence a great deal. Something that back in the 1980s we tried to prevent. And you have two religious groups, different groups acting in different ways, and you have fanatical people on both sides doing a lot of killing. We see words used in the description as radical or extremist or fanatical, but much of this my just be political. These are different people with different ideologicaland is political beliefs. It was unrealistic we could peacefully create a democratic state. It was very clear the sunnis were going to fight to stay in power. This business of the enemy of my enemy being my friend is very complicated in iraq. Lets talk about the kurds. These are people are in the north who are now siding nominally they are sunni, but they are siding with the government in this particular instance to fight off these isil or isis forces. The kurds may win in the end of this thing. The kurds are very careful. They enjoy de facto independence, but remain part of iraq and have expanded their territory a good deal, and now because of the struggle, they have taken over something they long wanted to do, that is the city of carcook. But they are much more prosperous and peaceful than the rest of iraq. This does bring in the question of turkey, which has also resisted the kurds having their own state. How do these events influence turkey, which is an ally. Actually it has been quite a change the kurds of iraq relations are quite good. One interesting thing of course is this recent capture of the turkman city of telaofma. And they do not take likely to any mistreatment of turks. There is some popularity isil enjoys some popularity amongst the sunni minority, but their aims isil aims are quite out of sync with most people in the middle east. They want to control something known as greater syria, which has not been around in generations, which would include israel, jordan, syria, lebanon, iraq, kuwait, pretty much all of that part of the middle east. What is possible, perhaps not likely, but possible is occupying the east of syria, and the north and west of iraq and creating a de facto state. The people in the north are very disaffected from the shiitedominated state. But in 2006, the same thing happened when alqaeda came in. But when these fanatical fighters came in, they started mistreating the sunnis as well, and if that happens in the north, you will again see a great change in attitude. At that. 1 never knows what the u. S. Is supposed to do. Be . First i would be very careful. We do not want to turn this terrorism against us. But there is certainly some possibility that we could use air power. Drones are only useful against a small number of people. There would have to be actual attack aircraft, but in doing that, we need to get concessions from Prime Minister maliki, to stop the highly confessional government that he is leading, and disaffecting the substantial sunny muslim population. They need this to get the country together again, but this fighting is only going to increase the hatred between shiite and shoe sunni. David newton, good to talk to you. The crisis in ukraine took its own turn today. Ukraine owns owes gazprom between 2 and 4 billion for past deliveries of natural gas. Today it failed to meet a deadline to pay off those debts. Onesixth of europes natural gas come through the ukraine. Now russia is putting the onus on ukraine to guarantee delivery to the east of europe. The United States posted a second Consecutive Year of Record Oil Production growth in 2013. In its annual statistical review, bp oil says u. S. Output grew by 1. 1 Million Barrels a day last year, reaching 10 million a day for the First Time Since 1986, and u. S. Demand grew at the fastest pace in the world. Well, oil is only part of the picture when we talk about the american trade overseas. Coming up the head of the u. S. Chamber of commerce tells me how american businesses can help countries like iraq. If you can stabilize economies and put people to work, its good not only for the countries that achieve that objective, but good for the neighborhood and broader neighborhood of people that invest there. More on my conversation with tom donohue just ahead. Plus if you dont like taxes, move. Im talking about Companies Incorporating over concerns. Im walking to Grover Norquist when we come back. Guns. I want to know what works what do you know works . Conversations you wont find anywhere else. Talk to al jazeera. Only on Al Jazeera America. Oh my the body blow delivered think eric cantors primary defeat last week, has sparked huge soul searching by the Republican Party by all sorts of issues. Tonight i want to talk about what it means on the g. O. P. s stance on taxes. And tonight im talking to Grover Norquist, the president for americans tax reform. 219 members of the house and 41 senators have signed its Taxpayer Protection pledge, vowing not to raise taxes. I want to get grovers take on a 43 billion merger two medical device makers. The deal will anow med tronnic to move its ireland. This is ab trend we have seen in the last few years. Some people think this is wrong; that American Companies will will buy a company and relocate to a place with lower taxes. Do you think its wrong . Its wrong that our tax code forces them to do that if they want to protect their workers and shareholders. There are two problems the United States has created for itself. One is we tax money earned in ireland and france, whereas france and ireland dont tax money earned in the United States. So we have a worldwide tax system. We should go to a territorial tax system like most of the rest of the world with the exception of north korea. And then we should have lower rates. Now we have the highest corporate rate around. Were at 35 federally, plus an average of 5 by the states. Canada is at 15. We need to have a lower corporate. Then it wouldnt disadvantage a company to be in the United States, which is what we do to our companies right now. Canada has fewer loopholes, fewer ways not to pay tax for corporations, that would have to come into play here. And i think you argued for this. Lower rates, and a fairer flatter system. Yeah, you can get rid of a lot of credits if you have a lower rate. The companies are bleeding from all pours because of the higher rates. Get the rates down. You need expensing for real expenses, but no targeted industryspecific tax credits. Everybody pays the same taxes, no preferences. Yes. Lets talk about this tax holiday. Senator rand paul, and harry reid both working on the idea of a tax holiday to allow companies to repatriate money from overseas. They say it will help pay for this Highway Construction Fund that is about to run out. What is your sense of this . We shouldnt be trying to pay for the present budget, because the present highway construction budget is 25 higher than it should be, because of the davis bacon act, which forces higher wages than the market would ask for. It is a racist law, and an expensive law. That saves you a third to a quarter of your budget. Then we take the money that the government pulls in from your driving a car and buying gas, and about 18 of it goes to inner city big city the Pension Funds that pay off retired unionized workers for metro and subways. Why are people who drive cars paying for the subway ridiculous contracts that they have negotiated . Stop bleeding the gas tax off into paying for davis bacon into spending, and for subways. Just build roads. Problem solved. No reason to raise taxes to pay for waste. And i get you. And you are one of these guys who stay on topics for a long time, but in the meantime we may run out of the high which fund and we have crumbling infrastructure system in this country. What do we do that . One, you fight davis bacon, not the taxpayer. The politicians are always saying we need more money, because we cant spending responsibly. How about no more money until you spending responsibly. Lets talk about the eric cantor subject. Some are so devastated he was defeated, and others say this is the whole point of the struggle in the Republican Party. Where do you stand . Eric cantor took the Taxpayer Protection pledge and kept it. They are both free market conservatives. Mr. Cantor had very serious fights going with the local Republican Party in his congressional district. The very people you would want to be doing your get out the vote, he was fighting with. So the reason why you cant extrapolate this into a big issue nationally, is the guy steps into a manhole without the cover on it, and disappeared. That was not something that is going to happen to other politicians. Always Pay Attention to your district, but dont be picking fights within the Republican Party in your district. Some say its all about immigration. The same day that cantor lost, the republican senator in north carolina, lindsey graham, won with 60 of the vote. If this was a trend, you would have seen a dozen or two dozen republican congressmen defeated in primaries, but the only other guy who lost was a 90 year old, perfectly fine ralph hal, but he was a 90 year old, and hadnt complained in years. He was mad about something with the local newspapers, so he wasnt talking to them. So that becomes a problem when you have a primary. So you are not thinking this is an Anti Government Movement Just yet . No well, i think the tea party movement, took the Republican Party by the lapels and shook it, and said stop spending so much money. Listened. Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us. Thank you. Chinese businesses have more debt on their books than any other country. The chinese Corporate Bond market reached 14. 2 trillion last year, more than the 13. 1 trillion in outstanding debt of u. S. Companies. Here is the problem with the growing debt burden. The health of the average company in china has deteriorated in the last four years. That is adding to concerns that the slowing economy and trouble in cities like steele could lead to defaults. And any big crack could quickly spread to other countries. Overdue loans at the ten largest mainland lenders rose 21 last year, to 94 billion. That didnt stop, Hong Kong Based bank from taking top honors on the list of worlds strongest banks. That is based on factors including how much capital a bank holds compared to assets and how many bad loans are on its books. The bank has slowed its expansion on the mainland as the economy has cooled off. It is majority owned by hsbc. Yet another massive recall from general motors. Ill more on mary berra and whether she can do anything to fix that companys culture. Plus taking stock in your investments. You may have to take some action. Ill show you how. We have to move out of here right now i think we have a problem. We have to get out of here. Theyre telling that they they dont wanna show whats really going on. Mr. Drumfield, id like to speak to you for a minute. This is where columbias war continues. Still occupied. Police have arrived. You see the blast scars from a bomb that went off. On tech know. That is immense. There a misunderstood. Vital part of the ecosystem. Is a tiger shark. First one of the expodition can they be saved . Sharks dont eat people. Tech know, every saturday go where science meets humanity. This is some of the best driving ive every done, even though i cant see. Tech know. Were here in the vortex. Only on Al Jazeera America. Here is a road we have been down way to many times this year. General motors is recalling more cars. Gm today said another 3. 4 million of its cars have ignition keys that may move out of position if they are carrying too much weight. And yes, the problem is similar to the issue that caused the company to recall 2. 6 million cars with ignition switch issues linked to 13 deaths. Todays recall affects seven models made between 2000 and 2014. If you have any kind of gm car please go check it out. There are a few brands where nothing has been recalled, but still just to stay on the safe side. It is also boosting the charge it is taking in the quarter to 70 million. This all comes two days before mary barry returns to congress to testify about the earlier recall. Joining me is new york oped columnist. Thanks for being here. Thanks for having me. Is gm being cautious of lawsuits, being politically smart, or overly cautious. Because now they are all sitting there going lets look at everything and be extra safe. Should we be complimenting them . They have gone from a company that had a culture where you werent even supposed to bring this stuff up in emails, to a culture now any slight thing they are recalling. You might as well get it all done now. And it certainly isnt going to get any cheaper. Absolutely right. Im curious about this, will they they keep saying its the old gm versus the new gm, nonsense. The real problem is you know, is there really a new gm. The old gm was highbrow, bureaucratic, and guess what its starting to look like
