From. The from. The from. The bad. Baby she went to. His. My guest is getting ready for a fabulous Christmas is Christmas tour and new album a fabulous Christmas looks a little bit iffy just a couple of days ago got really bad neck injury but he seems to be coming out the other side of that the tour has restarted and the album is on the way and so is Christmas we'll find out more with John and also keep an eye on the roads with Jack in charge this evening we got some curing on the m 25 clockwise now on the hard shoulder after nearly your accident but we've got the axe to between the m 4 and the m 40 but delays already back to Staines and the m 300-808-1010 extension 41 if you can update us on that now you don't often see I'm trees these days mostly because of Dutch elm disease but according to a new report it could in the future be restored to their former glory in the British countryside the charity future trees trust says there is a real reason to be optimistic confident that it's possible to breed trees which are resistant to the disease many of all of got about the poor elm tree graced our skylines by growing over 40 metres in height but at home full of enthusiasm be working to create a solution to the disease and I remember the devastation especially during the seventy's and eighty's Let's speak to scientist uncharted Forester Karen Russell author of the report for the future trees trust Hello to you there Karen Leggett our new I suppose there's a new listener start here when it comes to Dutch elm disease but what is it that damn disease is a very serious disease caused by a fungus and it's trans transmitted by. Or and they crawl over the tree effectively basically the Beatles feed on the tree and by feeding on the tree they introduce the spores of the fungus and then the fungus to develops within the tree and causes Wilton death and it's a very very dense if it does differ devastating disease All right so and that is why we saw such such a loss in a culture you know a natural cull sadly of the elm trees that as we were hearing Greystock country indeed many tens of millions of trees have been lost to Dutch elm disease over several decades and you know the time now is really ripe to make a difference because so many trees have been lost the ones that remain are potentially sources of resistance who tolerance and that's what we want to study and that's what we want to be using So obviously lots and lots of trees elm trees here but this is still taking its time to come up with are a plan the future is optimistic but over the years we've been struggling to find a way of dealing with it we have it's not it's not straightforward problem until. Because of the extent that damage and the complexity of dealing with pests and diseases you know hasn't the efforts haven't been called together but now we have the knowledge we have the right people and I do believe with the right funding a lot of progress could be made so so so things have experts been doing in the meantime where are we out with a population of the elm tree. Well there's been a whole whole range of activities ranging from people bringing in material from overseas that is resistant to planting it and using it and assessing its adaptability to growing conditions here but also it's an ecological suitability to support life such as the rare white hair or St butterfly there's been people identifying mature trees propagating them and creating small collections there's been other people under understand in how the pathogen that this is the fungal pathogen behaves and how the Beatles behave and how they interact with the with the l. So lots of different people and organizations have Being been working and this is why we're at the point where if everything comes together with there's a real opportunity to take work forward on a yes because obviously over the over the millions of years of evolution there's obviously been some sort of a little mini ecosystem going on between the tree and the bugs it's not as easy just saying well let's get rid of the bugs no it's not not a tool but with modern technology particularly in the field of genetics that there's now an opportunity to assist the process of breeding and selection which would really fast track what can be achieved so when we say we're optimistic say in the next 40 years we may see a significant increase in the population of elm trees or any tree is a good thing good from the sounds of it even better was an elm tree at the moment but very very much so I mean one of one of our most versatile hardwood trees broadleaf trees that is it's timber can be used in a multitude of different ways and because it's timber is so 1st town and so useful it means the carbon is locked up for a long time rather than just being turned into biomass just a quick final one about 30 seconds left but we've been here about things like ash die back of 4 oak trees. Are we worried about our oak trees now. The things that you're learning from elms help there. Potentially yes we are concerned about what's happening. It's very sad we have so many person disease through us let's just hope we've increased reasons people in trees undertake really good speech to thank you very much indeed Karen Russell there with thoughts on hopefully an optimistic future for elementary centuries in general she is the author of the port for the future trees trust it's a quarter past for. The radio but with travel you trust everything 15 minutes. It's one of those things I spend my whole life looking to travel reporter in saying these words m 25 yes and we do have problems on the m 25 traffic clockwise between junction 15 for the m 4 and junction 16 for the m 40 due to an accident which is actually now on the hard shoulder but there is congestion through that back all the way to junction 13 stains at the minute so it into the m 4 thanks to Mick who couldn't tell us that there's a broken down car on the m 4 eastbound just after the Junction 12 the fear is beginning to queue approaching that junction and traffic is moving slower through there than normal just as it heads up all lanes of reopen on the m 4 again eastbound just off the junction 5 for Langley after an earlier accident but it is still slow through there as the traffic returns to normal on London Road in Redding heading towards junction in the Sutton cedes roundabout it's queuing already and adding about 10 minutes to your journey and in Slidell there's queuing traffic on the a 4 London Road heading towards the town center between the Toby traffic lights and the traffic lights I think about 6 minutes to your journey heading to the trains there's the ongoing strike on South Western Railway so worth checking before you travel on any of those lines and g w r they've got delays of up to 15 minutes on Great Western Railway trains running between reading and Guilford at the moment that's g 2 speed restrictions if there's anything I've missed them please do give me a call so I can let everyone else know income we're leaving on one. Radio ban shareware battery of course and let the music play for 21 we've got the employment and earlier angst in there between the Langley 10 and the m 25 all lanes had been reopened but certainly slow as you head towards the m $25.00 on the ban on the m 4 and I see further back on that London bound stretch it just seems to be queuing and a bit heavier than normal around Junction 12 not sure where that is if you know or is just sheer volume of traffic and then we can spread the word 080-8101 I for one by the way the m 25 plot wise you are aiming for the m 25 from the m 4 and you've been through a whole lot of pain there you're going to hear another huge queue as well often on the racks to between the m 4 and the m 400-080-8101 over 41 always good to have your updates Jack in charge tonight well John Barrowman has starred in major t.v. Shows such as Dr Who Torchwood I'm a Celebrity Desperate Housewives and name a major musical He starred in as well next year as one of the judges in Dancing On Ice he's got a new album out for the festive season it's called a fabulous Christmas with a torch to match it although it wasn't a fabulous start to the season until after that serious neck injury you may have heard about at the weekend he had to cancel rearrange some of the shows where he's fighting fit now the joy of injections the Tories back on track and I caught up with John asked if he's a big fan of Christmas I am I mean this has been a bit of a passion project for me and the sense that Christmas for me is about family it's about friends it's about going back in the love kind of community when you. We all remember when we were young going to sing Christmas carols and doing stuff on Christmas Eve at a service and that's the one thing I wanted to kind of reclaim for people who with this album and because over the years we've kind of detached at least I have detached from that kind of community a sense going to a church and doing it because I've always felt that not all churches would be welcome of who I am in my family and things like that so I wanted people to be able to take this album Play it wherever they want to play it to bring that sense of community back into your house into your car with your friends when you play the album at home so yeah it's been a bit of a passion project and I absolutely adore Christmas Ok because what does a better woman Christmas usually mean is sort of everything and the kitchen sink plus a little full of presents and if you don't get it all presents is a little trouble No Well actually I don't I don't ask for anything for reasons because I'm I like giving more than I like to receive presents and I'm a very difficult person to buy for I pretty much have everything that I need and everything that I want so my husband and I don't do Christmas gifts for each other we might do small ones under the tree but we've over the years given we like for instance there was one Christmas we went to a charity in ad had them find a family that had had a difficult time over the year it doesn't need necessarily mean they needed money or they needed you know they just needed a little bit of fun support in their life and we showed up on their doorstep and we gave them 5000 pounds for Christmas so that's the kind of Christmas gifts that we like to give out to people rather than thinking about ourselves so the John Barrowman Christmas really is about giving its all so I love a big party I love having family around everybody's coming to our house in Palm Springs this Christmas and the place will be decorated better than any runway. At any airport so if any aircraft land on it I apologise. You can see from here that well you could you could you would see it from the space station let me tell you there's going to be you know there's going to be the big blow up you know those blow up thing oh yeah I that there's going to be what we call them blow mold the plastic you know characters all around to Christmas trees one that is going to be traditional one that is kind of pop culture I have a death star on top of it that plays the Star Wars thing so yeah so it's a bit over the top in the John Barrowman household yeah a bit over the top but it's Christmas is a fabulous Christmas season until underway a move from him at 535. 46. B.b.c. Radio and that is stop the Spice Girls of course. Did you you probably didn't use your young thing so you're out about enjoying yourself in the south of the evening but sure enough the strictly This week it was Michael McIntyre's big show yes and he had a Baby Spice on you know what I actually watched it was that I wasn't enjoying myself welching Michael was enjoying myself just what you mark my sense always clever isn't it is I enjoyed it a lot yes I just I knew she had some big names on her phone as well exactly why agree to it why would you agree to send to war because it because everyone always goes into sends a war with this would be fun and then you hand over the phone and go This is literally the worst idea I have ever had. And Chris Moyles always answers you know . I'm going to see it every time. The see you radio show with travel you trust everything 15 minutes. The only sort of famous person from all the famous person I know yeah he's good Ok so the next time I get a strange text from Debbie I know it's Michael here we go that's very true and I want to get hold of a piece for him because he's got gas Southgate's number so. Anyway go south care would never go along well we've got some problems our Junction 12 part the m 4 round feel where we had Mikel in earlier to tell us there's a broken down car eastbound just after Junction 12 but it's now queueing approaching the junction are on the motorway on the $84.00 that's back towards the Pangborn roundabout now and Joel just rung me to say she's just come off on the West Bank carriage I saw heading towards Wales and she's struggling to get round the roundabout so it's all beginning to snarl up around Junction 12 will feel at the moment of the m 4 so just allow a little bit of extra time or possibly find alternative or if you can around there for the minute on the m 25 queueing traffic between junction 15 for the m 4 and junction 16 for the m 40 that's due to an accident which. Now on the hard shoulder the congestion is back to junction 13 for stains on the a $3.00 to $2.00 impact short southbound towards the end 3 it's adding an extra 7 minutes to the journey at the moment if you are heading towards that junction 3 of the n 3 and switching to reading on London road it's really quite heavy heading toward symmetry junction and the south and seeds roundabout queuing already and adding about 10 minutes to your usual traffic telling heading to the trains and there's a reduced service running across the whole of the Southwestern railway network due to strike action so worth checking for trouble not one and on g.w. Ave delays of up to 15 minutes between reading and Guilford that's due to speed restrictions if there's anything I've missed then please do give me a call on our 808101041 as travel trust from b.b.c.
