The Guard boarded the ship on Friday and accused it of colliding with a fishing boat Henry Jones is a journalist who specializes in defense and international security they can get away with this if they can seize a British black tanker and straight from news that was excising innocent asses that was going about its usual business they can do that they can get away but it's an incredibly dangerous precedent it's emerged that the security firm G 4 S. Made gross profits of more than 2000000 pounds a year for running an immigration removal center near Gatwick detainees there were filmed being mistreated by some staff profits fell after the company had to increase staffing in training following a B.B.C. Panorama programme 2 years ago Labour's shadow cabinet will meet today to discuss the party's handling of anti Semitism over the weekend it published material which it says will help its members combat prejudice but the 1st part of the guide focusing on anti semitism Richard gold is from the Jewish labor movement that's definitely a place for education and it's needed in the Labor Party unfortunately our feel that what I've said so far in terms of the leaflet and the course that you can go on for $250.00 pounds is really just a sticking plaster will do very little to solve the problems which are now in the Labor Party protesters returning for mass demonstrations in Hong Kong have been attacked by gangs of unidentified men in white T. Shirts the speculation on social media that the men armed with batons were acting on behalf of the authorities more than 30 people have been injured leading surgeons have told the Victoria Darbyshire program that anyone having breast implants should be warned about illness there's little scientific evidence that suggests that implants do make people ill but some women say if the been warned they wouldn't have done it nor Nugent is a plastic surgeon breast implant in the US is poorly recognize to be perfectly honest they haven't conclusively proven that causes direct harm to the body's tissues are causes things reactions but there are not very many studies. And the new Ukrainian president Vladimir Selenski party is the most well ahead of its rivals in parliamentary elections although it falls short of an overall majority polygamy results appear to confirm a national exit poll suggesting it got around 44 percent of the vote he suggested he could govern in a coalition with another neat party let's get the support now in the Catton. This is B.B.C. Radio 5 Live on digital B.B.C. Sound this small space. Radio 5 Live from 6 wake up with fleas like breakfast good morning but if you offer the day ahead and up on this let's do this today I'm in Westminster but I want your state room you join me tonight for catching up with. Mr know. With Welcome to Belgium today really the crucial day breaks for us it's fun life's comfy on the way to. P.C. Way if you take this week on the B.B.C. Sounds that. This is a far valve and also not coming up in this hour of the program it's your opportunity to get any advise that you need with any gadgets that you've got if you've got a 2nd issue prog detective you might want to solve them 188-590-9693 that's 88590963 whether that's an issue with your internet or your computer. Or your for. Or you tell your your radio will your whatever in my video games console even if you're going to shoot over techie nature the person who might be able to solve them is our gadget detective you can text him on 8 for Farai 8 he can e-mail up or not at B.B.C. . Dog. Or if you want to talk to him directly and talk through the issues that you're experiencing then probably better to give him a call of late. 085-909-6935 he took out a lot and though you are very well things very much from the gadget detective dot com So let's talk about I know that is a few things that you want to talk about as well not least facial recognition has been in the news because the police want to introduce it but there are all sorts of citizens' rights issues around what is facial recognition of as well as it were so facial recognition We've had cameras for a long time you know C.C.T.V. But the cameras have been dumb in that they've needed human beings at the Ren to make any use of the recordings or life feeds with facial recognition technology means that a computer effectively watching the feed from these cameras can work out who it's looking at and sometimes what they're doing as well that sort of goes beyond facial recognition but that can be done as well and it does that by trying to match the patterns that it sees in people's faces to a database of faces that it's already compiled so it tries to match against those and obviously that raises a number of. Concerns for society about whether we should be walking around the streets being recognized by computers and and matched against databases you know this seems to be being done without any real public discussion or public understanding of what the ramifications of that could be well I can think of the ramifications certainly if you were to time your partner but if you've got nothing to hide you know what I mean if you've got nothing to hide if you're. Yeah if you're true to your commitments this is it we're in relationships and amongst other things then what you've got to work I think that's that's less of a problem unless anyone from from what if it is selling the information to your partner but look the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee should group of M.P.'s actually sat and looked at this issue and looked at it last year as well said that there should be no more trials of this technology until the relevant regulations were in place and what's happened is technology has made something possible for the 1st time and there's no framework within which it can properly be regulated to stop these very powerful technologies being abused on purpose or inadvertently For example it gives an example where police forces were failing to edit the database of custody images so when someone gets arrested the images taken is loaded into the database now when someone becomes an convicted you know either because found not guilty or no charges are brought their image is meant to be removed from that database that's not being done in the way that it's been that issue with D.N.A. Is that that's the main complaint about D.N.A. When you're arrested the police can take lawfully take some D.N.A. Samples off you from your hair or your saliva or whatever it might be right and then if it's still on the dates of various when you have been convicted you've been released here as an issue but act when you force that through the same thing when you. About the facial recognition cameras were already have C.C.T.V. Cameras and arguably arguably when the police a used C.C.T.V. Cameras to try and detect a crime and your face is on there they should delete the footage afterwards as you keep their records in any case what they use an inappropriate time to sort of say oh well yeah those are being kept they're being kept in a way that they shouldn't be and so what effect can that have so an innocent person whose face is on the database keeps getting matched as they go about their lawful business and potentially keeps getting harassed Also it depends a bit technical but it depends on how the AI system is trained it's trained by giving images and if those images are not balanced in the right way then the AI system may become more more men than women or more black people white people you know it's possible for our own biases to be programmed into these machines and then be carried out. With machine efficiency as it were so you invented that then so you continue to complain isn't it with this with AI generally in all sorts of respects even when it comes to. Doing it. Would you call it the over the would you call it when they toss out all the sort of you know when you go to your bank would it give you a loan or not then it goes through this procedure now they call it up for you generally that yeah I know you don't sub all your aggregates or whatever it might be so does a bill like you mean like you don't know if your credit history and works out whether your credit worthy Yeah it does it through an algorithm algorithms OK Work algorithm it's still a relatively new word for us old timers we're 5 minutes in and we've got the word algorithm Oh yeah it's going to go well tonight of course gotta go well oh $808590.69 you've got a question of any techie nature for me then D. Gives a call and I know you've got some other things you want to. About a moment or 2 as well as you talk about some issues that you might have seen this is got sent to your website as well one of our listeners wants you to recommend any reputable places to register a domain name I see there are quite a few for us this is from Richard and he is good he's quite right there's a lot of people who sell domain names and some of them cheaper than others but they all work out about the same at the end of the Day Well yes so there are differences and yeah I did see this I saw this on my Twitter feed earlier earlier this evening this question it's a good question and I'll take a moment afterwards perhaps just explain why it was interested in buying a domain name but but in terms of choosing A demain name So 1st explain what to my name is that's something dot com or something dot co dot U.K. So you might have gotten out of bio dot com You can buy that or at least you can rent it for multiples of one or more years and that means that you can have a website that also had to buy dot com Or you could have an email address based upon that to maintain. So that's why you might want one you buy a year it's a time typically when you buy it the 1st year tends to be cheaper at that give it to for like a pound or something and then they'll charge you depending on which variant is and how unusual it is you pay about you know $1010.00 pounds or more per year thereafter so there's Think few things to consider one is the initial cost $1.00 is young Another is the ongoing cost. But you also have to look at for example do they include in that price the ability to have a you know a basic email based around that domain name or do you have to buy an email inbox separately because that can double or more the price the other thing I think increasingly we need to think about is if you are using to run an email address where is that information stored are you dealing with a British company which still stores in Britain by the way all British companies do store data in Britain or is the data your e-mail data and other data being stored outside the U.K. And in particular outside the E.U. If it's stored outside the E.U. Then then that data could be accessed in ways that might not be legal in this country but are legal say in the United States or some people want email accounts on. Activated and action outside the European Union so that be another thing to consider I mean there are various companies Go Daddy is a is a large American company they do a lot of business some people hate them I've used them they get the job done there's another company in the U.K. Called 123 read their fine one and one is also OK I mean there are there are lots of them but I also suggest you know shopping around for deals each year or year or 2 when you come to new it because sometimes there are deals to be had elsewhere. This is from a sure he says frenzy with Microsoft ending update some patches for Windows 7 on the 1st are generally 2020 is it safe to use Windows 7 after the state or should I date to Windows 10 Manton Oh yeah so it's a good question it will become unsafe after the date when they stop patching and the reason for that this is what happened with Windows X.P. People were using Windows X.P. 13 years after it was launched and Microsoft had to you know leave them off expe with a crowbar by stopping the support for it and now after many years Windows 7 is going the same way and people stick to it because it's a good operating system they like it and a lot people still loath windows 10 I personally see with those 10 as little more than a piece of spyware Unfortunately it's an excellent operating system but it's been designed in a way that is really designed to glean as much information about you and your usage online as possible in a way that Google might have done and it's a shame to see Microsoft going going down that same path it becomes Windows 7 becomes unsafe because as vulnerabilities in the software are detected after that date that's to say bugs in the software that allow people to take advantage of those bugs in order to hack your computer. Take control steal your data steal your money those those bugs will not be fixed and as a as your operating system has more vulnerabilities in it which are not fixed that means that it's a dangerous thing to do so no you can't really use Windows 7 safely after after that date of fortune unless Mark so you know give it a stay of execution support it for a bit longer but once the support is ended that's it after that you've got a difficult choice to go to Windows 10 if you want to stay within you know Windows and you don't have much choice but Windows 10 as I say is by default set up to gather as much information about us as you can and if you've got the ability and an hour or so you can change all the settings to the limit but not eradicate the amount of data it takes from you but sometimes you change things and marks of changes them back again which is. Despicable in my view so that's something to consider other people will go back at this point some people will be the thing that pushes them into into the sort of the macro S. Operating system and down that route others will go towards something called Linux which is a open source operating system which is really. Brilliant operating system but doesn't have the same support or something like Windows the same range of apps the same ease of use and so forth so you know we're all going to have a difficult decision when marks of pools of support why don't they understand that a lot of us are conservative in our use of technology that you know well well once you sort of accustomed to using a certain interface for example you don't want to see change you don't want to see the color change you don't see anything about it change because you haven't got time to go and read and learn about they have been the only answer yes' it cetera why don't they just leave things the way he says it because of money well it is because Microsoft's business model was based upon selling Windows operating system it would sell it to manufacturers and it would sell it to individuals as updates now you can't sell someone a new operating system if it's not different because by definition it's not near and you know they try to improve the product and with those improvements come again by definition you know changes but the difficulty of Microsoft is it sort of woke up in a world where it was very different because you know if you think about Apple computers Well you know the operating system comes with it you don't pay for it separately and they get charged for updates if you think about you know i Pads and i Phones and i O. S. Is free if you think about Android smartphones and tablets and Android is free although you pay for it with your data but in terms of money it's free so suddenly Microsoft became the only one that was making had to make its money by charging for the operating system and that's not really going to fly anymore people are unwilling to pay for these things with cash and the effect is Windows 10 you get an operating system where. Banks or tries to make money out of her out of learning as much about you as it can spying on you is the term I would use and then monetizing that information just the way that Google do it and Facebook do it's a Microsoft for years would poke fun and criticized Google for the way it did its business and now is having to do the same thing. Well we'll see what the future holds or that will be very interesting as you know the battle of the tech companies continues apace to see which ones have got the right model to see them through into the future yeah yes indeed OK this is well is from one of our listeners see it has e-mailed to say amongst other things along the marginally. That. This is. Cause a loss in the yeah it's about the lunar landings work we find more about that online you know NASA website is a good place just term Oh yeah yeah I mean there's a lot I mean you've got to be careful what you read about lunar landings before you start getting people telling you didn't happen. Which is kind of bizarre in itself but the NASA website is you know that was some great resources there some great interactive resources they still to astounding educational work and help inspire people and you know these are the saw things that just inspire whole new generations of of children and young adults to to to go down that path and you know explore the universe and you know that they're going to be our savior in the end of the species who are going to have to get off this planet at some point OK this other similar kind of question Arraf says. Look. Can you stream Netflix from an M As in a Fire H.D. Tablet from your phones internet I'm looking to get tablet just mainly for Netflix and don't want to spend that much Yeah OK it's a good question so the reason why Arraf is asking the question about the you know the Amazon Fire tablet is because those tablets are very cheap and that is partly because they're subsidized somewhat by Amazon because Amazon want you to have an Amazon. Fire tablet because then you can consume their e-books and their various services so their services are available over you know over the Internet or the scenes from tablets and therefore it's the encouraging each other mechanism to consume and buy more of their services so the tablets a good value for money but they don't run as you know a common operating system they run a variant of Android but no Android itself so you can't use the Google Play store so you get far fewer apps but one of the apps that you can get is Netflix. So I think what I refuse is trying to do is use. One of these devices which won't have a SIM card in it so I don't have to use on why I thought I'd say he's wanting to create a wife I hotspot with his mobile phone which most mobile phones are capable of some some companies that provide you with you know service are not keen on you doing it but increasingly that allow it so your phone turns into a wife I hotspot the Amazon tablet. Hooks up to the wife by the app runs and you have your Netflix so yes it will work also works very well on you know another thing that you could look at if you don't need to be mobile with it is the EMS and Fire T.V. Which is a little streaming box or stick that you get and plug into a spare socket on your television set and that's a really nice way to watch Netflix because then it's on a full size T.V. Not just one small tablet so if you don't actually need the mobile aspect of it then the fire T.V. Is really cheap they were on I mean they had Amazon Prime day the other day and had to fork a steak for 25 pounds in the standard one for 20 you pay a bit more than that now but still you know cheaper than a tablet so if you don't actually need a tablet to do that and then the stick is a better way to go. You know Maria says frenzy my computer today kept giving me some message about sticky keys and no matter what I do it keeps coming up Also when I click a file on desktop it's highlighting several files to open this isn't happening over
