I. I. And that was called Haile right a night by the mountain and fill it. Welcome welcome everybody this interloper in voice that you can hear Hello my name is right show I'm covering for the lovely devils here asked me to be here for the next 2 weeks to bring you some folk music from my life and things that I enjoy so a big thank you to them for inviting me I'm singing with Peyton canes you my friend the Oxford cricketer fellas I'm the program leader from to create at it's quarter to 6 hour I thought I'd spend the next hour of bringing you some of these from some of the amazing people that I've acquired and some of the musicians to their students have brought to my tent. I've learned about it from the inside hopefully a lucky chance like some of some of what you think. So stay with me for the next hour as I'm looking after those folks. On the radio. Well that's the wonderful Briony great faith wave at ladies pleasure and constant belly from her latest release Hava and if you've just joined us hello my name is right so I'm covering for the. Show this week and next and having grown up in Huddersfield I was always very aware of Bryony and she was a great inspiration to me and when this album came out. Very very happy with that fast track particularly because I know my dad and I would have been done sooner around the kitchen to that so. That was good for you and I on the program leader of the great Leeds College of Music and it's my great privilege to work with some of the industry's most fantastic musicians and one of Jim Murray he teaches with me on the degree and in the 1st year we talk a lot about the ballots in the boat a balance and I want to play you know example of Jim's just fantastic care perch to a range men and development techniques that's how we talk about say on the coast and this is the wife of course as well as performed and arranged by false lights. Life. She finds. A. Long. One and we. Go. We. Can. Never. Lash. Out. Of this young girl killing my mother. In law is just fantastic storytelling isn't it from fossil ice but stems bonds and I really hope that you enjoyed listening to that as much as I did that this is right to suck life if you've just joined us I'm covering for the Devils folk and roots and I will be hip for the rest of this an hour and hopefully you'll join me next week as well if you enjoy what you hear and so sometimes the students at least College of Music introduced me to new artists or they gave me and pieces that they think I might find interesting and one of the artists that they introduced me to was John offenders than and I was so grateful to them because I went once I came across this album I didn't turn it off for quite a long time so I thought I'd play. You guys because it's another fantastic example of great storytelling and interestingly Jolliffe was the youngest ever recipient if the B.B.C. Young folk watched back in 2003 and I'm going to play you a track from his album hearts broken heads turned and faced his coat saying is a pleasure. I. I absolutely love the truck I often actually have it on when I'm in the grass because. So I hope you enjoy that. A style of Henderson and Co thing is a pleasure I wanted to talk a little bit about some of the themes and we've mentioned ballots and border ballots that we teach at leats college music and one of them that she's been really inspired by the students is the theme of activism in music can protest song particularly and. I was lucky enough to go to a talk it was a talk and it was a talk with songs as well by a. Buff while he was there was there were talking about how they put their music together but also the meanings behind it and it was really really inspirational and I'm so glad that I got to go to that talk it was this long Love College which is just based on I think I hold back so have a look if you can see some of the talks that are going on that's absolutely fantastic and it's about activism in and I really wanted to play something by Tito as well what a fantastic year they're having at the moment and everywhere I look in the media I see them and it makes me so proud it makes me so proud of folks in traditional music and the music some amazing women and creating the moment so by having such a great time with Gentleman Jack I just wanted to play something a little bit different so if you know if you're new to this and I want to play you Conan Valley hearts because it just talks about the warmth of this region particularly the Coen Valley So this is Cone Valley hearts. Just beautiful for those of you you want aware of Gentleman Jack and it's a song that was written by a Hooley in Tito and it's used on the B.B.C. Series of the same name at the moment but it was conceived much Alyea than the B.B.C. Series but that's what's gone at them so much media attention at the moment is a fantastic track and I used to go check out both things if you're interested in that kind of thing go and have a look like a fantastic start to continue the theme of activism and protest music when when we introduced the house we talk about the 1st song that was ever in the entertainment industry as a protest song and but God Ian refers to this next song as the 1st great protest song and has a fantastic writes a cold Dorian Lynskey and he's written a book called 33 revolutions per minutes and he's got some fantastic quotes from artists from all over the globe and one of them particularly struck a chord with me and that was a quote from Robert you may know him of massive attack from him and he talks about the genius. And subtlety of writing a protest song so I'm going to play you the 1st great protest song and its strange fruit performed by Billie Holiday the lyrics were a poem written by Paul and under the name bits of fruit but it was changed to Strange Fruit and the version that we have for you today is actually a life from 1946 and it's an incredibly intimate and roll version to the point where you can actually hear it clearing have to start with so here it is in all its glory this is Billie Holiday and strange. To be. Straying which room. Blurred Oh I really. And learned that. Through. Blackbody swing it. Either is string. Root hanging. Round after she. Passed or. Seat. Of the. Watching. Every misstep. Santa Magno. We. When the certain. Very. Room. Oh most. Boring Yeah that was. Fun though when. The Sun. Grabbed. An air and. Was. Still missing. That was Billie Holiday recorded live in 1946 and if you enjoyed that do you stick around for the program after this is Gary play and he'll be playing a lot of music that you enjoy so if the Devils were here at the moment they would be doing the diary sex and so I'm going to give you a bit of an idea of what's going on in and around that area at the moment so I'm going to start with some of the folk clubs the folk clubs are kind of out for some of the moment but some of them who are still playing out fires burning and singing is my sweetie son and if you would like to go to any interesting news night this week. Folks unplugged tomorrow. And then there's the folk club on Wednesday Bradford STOP IT folk club and day and Keith leaseback a pipe spoke on Friday and along with that we have everybody and. The folk or you Christians kind of struggling next weekend to the fight I have to say and if you are heading to what they call if you need convincing to head in I have to way I've got some of the artists who will be taking part in that sometimes that festival and some of the artists includes Friday Griffith and will come soon and we've heard from the right 8 grannies after the my Ceduna and. Tackle we've got something coming up from just a 2nd Rufus said Price the person used to call him sounds the Wilsons because satire growing Karen name is Sandra Robb fun science and only lies by the davenport family. And my favorite Nick Dow Steve 10 and I Mr understand. The fantastic Nick how to treat our amazing. Flowers says the lovely dollars may and may cry and to mention but a few there are so many more have a look at a website that is on a list literally longer than my arm so go and check that out and that's just a snapshot of what you folks 2019 started that long Have a great time. So if the Devils were here in the studio it was moments I would say OK and we're dying. To have a bell spanking bridge B.B.C. Radio. Thank. You. Like. Lolo's a bleeding. In a forest not half as much privilege as the. To listen thank you. Anderson. And that's dominion of the sword by Melrose quartet and they're they're from Sheffield and also Nancy care he's a member of our faculty at Leeds culture of music camp that song actually was performed by one of our own song balls and when and when Martin Kathy originally. Arranged that poem it was a poem from 1649 by an anonymous pamphleteer he added in his own verses and I believe encouraged to add in their own devices as well as I have a relisten at some point see if you can spot the extra verse but that was none sees calving at our students was that I had to write their own verses which they did and they performed spectacularly but if you do you want some homework from me and I implore you to write your own vice for that as a calling to arms at the moment so to continue and again in theme I want to play you something a little bit different and the idea of transmissions so people pass in music down from generation to generation is really important and it's such an intrinsic part of folk in traditional music and I read the story of 10 are one with their album El one and in 2006 they went and played in Mali a 1000 miles away from the homeland and they inspired some young musicians and they didn't speak Temasek which is the language of the 2 hour eggs but they were so. By the music that over the following yes they became. Follow is of Sonora when and they love this style of blues guitar of desert blues and all of the way and when it's in our When revisited 10 years later in 2016 they were so blown away by the musicianship of these young musicians that I actually invited them to play on the truck sus the car. Apologize if my isn't being practiced and but I'm not a natural speaker. But this is this is the version of sus to come off the album and it just speaks volumes about the idea of passing music from generation to generation and speaking your truth as a community and how valuable it is to be able to express yourself through this fantastic. And that's. By tomorrow and I implore you to go and have a look at the video actually it's really really beautiful it observes quite a lot of traditions between boyhood and manhood and the talk about. The joy at the transmission of music cross the generations which is really really beautiful this is right Cliff I'm sitting in for the devil's folk and roots. Coming up next I wanted to introduce you to some of the work of. His collaborator Tom. They've been at the College of Music quite a lot to see and not only does she teach but Tama not shave comment on a couple of workshops as well and their approach to composition and Iran is really fresh and inspirational and we all take a lot from it and the truck that I've chosen off the album Laguna. And is inspired by a Norwegian melody and it really fits in this playlist it's really really if Ariel and a little bit. As well it's got an awful lot to it this is called Nina's tunes and as I mentioned it's off the album Laguna I believe there's another album on the way as well sorry if you want to check out more of their work had to buy because that's where everything used at the moment she's website this is Nina's tune by Tom and not teach almost. Her. Well that was Nina's chain a reworking of a traditional no wage and military by. Tom law so Yorkshire's very lazy my story I had this truck a long time ago now and it really really resonated with me and one of the one of my most favorite things that I get to teach A's is the idea of folklore and more specifically and folklore in music I've mentioned storytelling an awful lot they say even in and storytellers folk call gives us such epic and fantastic tiles to sing about our experience in this world just as human beings and this I think is one of my favorite songs that's been inspired by folklore but it's folklore and the beauty of physics is what it was written about but in terms of how we we deal with. Death as a community there are so many stories wrapped up around a uni have to read something like Harry Potter and look at the title of the 3 brothers and it all talks about similar themes but this song is just so beautiful and. It's called Order and Chaos and I like to think that I I live my life generally in chaos and it's about the beauty of chaos. Is. I want. My. Own i. Freeze frame the way Siri with. Me for. This will. Be. As I. Leave from this. Every bit. Of. Laughter. At my. Things found in religiousness Randa caves of. Me free. Iran I find. Us as I have. Time. To time. Not Lynn. a. Well that was written by Hazel ask you of Lady May sorry this is right Charles Sutcliffe I'm covering the devil's fuckin show the safe one coming up after me is Gary play but before that I've got a couple of tunes that I'm going to play for you so. I wanted to introduce another right chill into the mix because it's a fine name and writes When you came down to say is at leats coach of music she walked through those hallowed halls as so many of us has to have done and she came to talk to us about again her approach to musicianship and about her approach really to range in poems students had a lot of questions for her and this is just one that is kind of heartbreakingly beautiful and I really enjoyed it this is her version of Don't go out some like my darling. Darling. Don't leave me here alone. Home with me. You own. You wanting me. Your friends are. Really. Ready really that she here you. Know. Me. RINGBACK He's gone life to me. For. Drink. Ready ready ready before. The. Home. Home. For our week. On he says wrong. Just WHO. Won. One. Well just listen to the flugelhorn and she's all right on the half isn't showy that's a song. And that was found in the Marx Hunter fog song collection and it's an archive of a 1000 songs that were collected in the Ozark Mountains between 19561976 that's just a beautiful arrangement so we have come to the end of this fantastic time and I hope you've enjoyed it I really hope you've enjoyed it because I'm going to be back next week at the same time and I hope that you will join me so a big thanks to everyone who's helped with this there's been a huge amount of input so I thank you to everybody coming up next is Gary Cup play and you can have a fantastic time with him but to finish with I want to play you something particularly special to me this is a very selfish track that I've picked this is the song really I think that got got me thinking about doing folk and traditional music professionally and it's a song now that he's every time we use it as my soundtrack it still stands the stood the test of time so I enjoy this thank you for everything and have a great evening Stay with us here on B.B.C. Radio only and this is a lies a comfy with worst assistant. And . She leaves.
