Radio Leeds how you doing tonight we're told he mental health in myself Tacloban fest who would like to tracks back to back kick starting with Joe and sorry 10 nice and loud if anyone complains he just send them to me. If you're listening to the seamers only would come. To see radio really. Done a. Little . Well you think you. Mean. Boy if you can. Thank you. Tom. Tom. Jack Jones hard to take you from the album snack super size which is out now. Welcome to the South Club b.b.c. Radio Leeds face the scene with me and. Tonight show we're focusing on our mental health as today is World Mental Health Day and mental health problems can affect any warm people do experience mental health issues due to their sexuality according to the Mental Health Foundation there is a disproportionate number of people within the. Community struggling with their mental health 52 percent of people from this community experience depression and almost half of our trans friends have thought about taking their own life but here's the thing about South Carolina it's a space for you to be open a space for you to be safe and brave. Tonight I'm in conversation with Ali from the total a gay bar and trans Men's Health project that works to right across West Yorkshire and going out on the scene as while it's enjoyable you can socialize if Brandy can go dancing you can do whatever you want to do but I always feel when I chat to friends that I had some pressure to when you're Gay your body your trans and you go into this kind of environment where I guess you call a bit of a front when you walk into a bar oh you know you don't go out to be miserable not going to go and see. This public face of I'm having a wonderful time I'm here with my friends about this is the thing about mental note you can't see what's going on inside so you might have that public face when you're out dancing away and stuff but your mind might be going on did not are I've got friends who will go out and look like they're actually enjoying themselves but talking to him after was will say absolutely that this was happening that this was happening and you can write think you didn't portray that image what's your account of the nose going to know you're feeling that way maybe talk to the people that you thought that you had the issues with maybe talk to him kind of thing instead of bottling it up and that's really important just. Talk you know it's so important to talk with these whether it's to friends family whether it's to Samaritans or you know you can you can google I'm feeling down who can to talk to will give you all the local numbers to talk to Queen Bee laid an annual event in the city center which celebrates drug culture and they named the big drag queen of the year but the message behind not the money raised behind this annual event Tell me about the story behind that yes so that Greenpeace started about 5 years ago it was after a local person Matthew Bedingfield committed suicide all of a sudden and then the community really shocked by it and he was on the scene the night before Apple went home and actually committed suicide he was happy as as he normally was known saw any signs of any mental health issues and on the back of that Queen Bee was set up and it helps raise awareness about mental health issues within the community and over the years raise thousands of pounds for local charities people like the Samaritans and the auction mesmeric Counseling Service and camera the men's men's mental health one that is working with so it's raised all this money for all these various charities trying to encourage people but the biggest thing it goes brings the community together and on the night it does it's not just about the drug show there is powerful messages out of that as well from individuals that have suffered from mental health issues that people will know on the on the lead scene or the racial she's seen and the message coming from a peer to say it's Ok to talk is so much more relatable than someone else telling your oh it's Ok to talk it's good it's coming from so when you look up to so hopefully that helps break down the barriers and an important message to with Matthew like you said there were no signs I mean I physical signs he didn't really speak about any mental health issues he had so again this is now again just saying check in with your friends make sure they're Ok the. Exactly you know just just update your Facebook status you know this hopefully today most of you have had the green ribbons on your Facebook if not it's not too late you still got people are I was left to change your Facebook status to a green ribbon if you type in world mental health day on the frames or comes up with some fantastic frames for you it just shows that you are there for you friends if someone needs you and they see that that could be Did difference of them talking and not talking if they know if they know you're there for them they might just open up to be so when you've thought think that need your help but it's a Facebook friend and they see that on your Facebook that could be the trigger for them to open up to you and what fantastic think it would be if someone if someone just did open up here and you were there to help them through this difficult period Allie what would your advice be to anybody who's listening to NY who maybe knows that they struggle with anxiety that depressed maybe their mental health isn't in top form what would your advice be to them speak to someone you know. We have got lots of services one of the biggest ones we do is we do an l.g. Counselling service we do $66.00 sessions free of charge for the community and then we sign post people on after that they still need massive support but that is the waiting list for that is around 2 weeks where as mainstream counseling you're looking at 3 or 4 months quick he's unable to go a really quick turnaround on that and the counselling quaternary is everyone a really special day this week you know we know we're going to have an influx there already to speak to people we've got more councils on than ever and then the other thing is you know if you want to call on one of our courses more than happy but if you haven't got anyone to speak to or you don't know where to turn to go a new smartphone go onto the Internet just just put feeling down who can I speak to give you all the resources in the local area whether that's the Samaritans or the help lines will give you the resources you need and the Yorkshire. Mark websites got lots of resources on it as well because performs picture of friend someone will always be there to listen to you and Ali just finally I know a lot of teachers lecturers listen in the area or if there is someone listening from a school who maybe would like the sessions to come into their school or college how can I find out more is the website here all of the tools are on the website they can contact me via that our Facebook and Twitter handle is up to him as Mark forward slash total ments but all the details. You care probably the easiest thing to remember go on the look is up and we will come to you will come to the school when the sessions within the schools we find that people feel more comfortable opening up in environments they know so we try to remain our offices in Leeds instead of we don't get the buy in that we do when we say for example in which we'll call age or late city call a dumb college or one of these colleges really we get more buy in there from the individual could feel more comfortable and our job is to make them feel as comfortable as possible so they open up and we get down to the issues are affecting their mental health early Always a pleasure and can I do say thank you for being such a shining light within the community here in the West Yorkshire because it does make such a difference to have role models taught people to look up to people to lead Foreman and real inspired by Thank you for having isn't it a wonderful show thank you.
