Tears before everything was one of the greatest rock albums of all time surrealistic promo and the airplane caught a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and 26 deeds just before the awards ceremony I was lucky enough to talk to Marty bow and then he told me that although volunteers was on some of the counterculture that sergeant were a bit more prissy. It. Came about because we were all living in this mansion at one time a dash to street. And I heard all the garbage cans clanking outside the window and I looked down there with the Volunteers of America truck picking up his garbage and I just rolled over and wrote this lyric off the top of my head and then that day we had were so we had a little studio in the bottom of the mansion and I went down and I gave it to Paul and said he was do this and. And he said or let's use this Grateful Dead rip you know and band in L.A. And that banjo thing that Garcia plays and so we started doing it and that night we did an onstage and became part of our our show you know and took off from there I mean it started out to me just writing about guys picking up the garbage. You know what it became meaningful that people. Became rather meeting Foley during the upset I mean those times when Dobby honest you know I was at school and I was a ching to get out and get involved in all this stuff but you were doing it all you guys. Were you very good friends with the Grateful Dead Yeah yeah we were all good friends with Big Brother and a holding company in Yeah Steve Miller you know all the bands you know yeah Quicksilver Messenger Service we all hang out together it's like they all would come to. The mansion and hang out there because we had a pool table you know big big place and it was a lot of fun yeah they hit us I remember in the late seventy's was a bit different you know everybody said oh let's go to hey we got to go and see it I haven't you know there was a little it was a little kind of blue and it was a it was a bit disappointing it wasn't it wasn't what I imagined it I spray should be what year was it when you got to hear spray Well I grew up around and really my family lived right in Hate Ashbury So while so I grew up there you know what made it the place where all about as wanted to be was it was it just because it was cheap to live there was kind of can you know to the city was cheaper and you know the old Victorians and they were cheap at the time in that area was kind of you know not one of the better areas at the time I think of kind of romance in Britain you know you were far away from San Francisco and people like Scott Walker would talk about or sing about it yeah Rick Barton and you'd get all while I've got to go there I've got to go I must be someplace did you object to it as if you like when it became the place everybody wanted to come to. Well at 1st at 1st 65 maybe 67 you know it was like kind of just amongst the bands and people in the area and more and more kids were coming in doing musicians were coming there from around the place but after $67.00 it got so popular it became a it was funny they took 8 street and they had buses going down one way they made it a one way then they reversed it made it one way the other way for the tourist buses and then they put it back the 2 way and and it was quite funny you know tourists would be going up and down in the tour buses you know who look at their the hippie right there you know. You mentioned Paul Konerko and I our condolences because Paul contest away last week which was a close collaboration was it wasn't it that you to hide Yeah yeah he was the 1st guy I found for the band and kicked in the 1st guy and we went over and sort of working with and you know we wrote a lot of songs together in the 1st albums. And you know I'm sad to see him go on what. Seems. To. Me mother. When she's to. Say the album you know white rabbit and coming back to me come from Surrealistic Pillow became enormous and it became and still it's still a huge it was with so many people. It's very romantic Were you conscious of that reminds when you were when you were writing. Sure we were yeah you know we were we were all young in school of idealism and and believed that the music could change the world and it was changing things and you know we had all these other great music savin ing I mean besides us so it's you know cause the Beatles came over and then there was you know English invasion and then we had Motown you know and we had all this gone plus you know women were speaking out during that gays were coming out so everybody was against it was pretty much of it and you know it was quite something everybody was into the music business so we actually don't sound like maybe we could you know do something positive. Change some things so they had a lot of idealism and romanticism and all for. Utah but very big draw in the holding company John of John and yeah. She. She and Grace what were the 2 were the 2 great women singers and the San Francisco of that time where they were the they were the people yeah turn to right there you surprised you had did you ever asked John S. To to sing with you. No but we sang you know New Year's is New Year's Eve we we have we where the house band at the old Fillmore and before the dead took over and and you know on New Years everybody would get busy Janice to Joan Baez and you know we'd all sing together and that's the only thing we did together but she had her own band you know and she was quite popular in their own. Were you surprised when when Grace Slick said yes she would come and sing with you. While I was because she had her own band to the Great Society and they were real popular and we played together a lot. But you know Grace would sit on the front right in the front row and watch me a lot you know and I guess she had her eyes on the band but you know when we lost our 1st girl singer who just died the same day that Paul died in fact the setting this was significant in that she died the same day as Paul because they were both heavy you know a chain smoke an idiot really did themselves in but anyway. We needed a girl singer and we had a meeting and we were talking and you know and the only girl singers around was Janis and grace and Lydia Pense who had cold blood and they were all real popular and I I said well you know the only one I could ever sing with would probably be grace but she's kind of her own band you know and her brother and her husband was in that band so I had no idea you know but Jack said well I'm going to go ask and so that afternoon he went last year and that very night she joined our band she just left her band and bam was on stage with us the very night we asked her and they made it and she and I just clicked you know we just clicked together. Strolling over. What kind of things would you say to somebody to to get them to join your bond would you say we're making a lot of money we've got to be to apply and I don't know well I I would just you know I just go get people would bring them to their words you know like I had to go get your arm a lot they played the guitar you know he he had his own snobbism you know and that he was a soloist and didn't want to join anything like that and you know but since I was in charge I realized his great ability ready we need that and you know we would just tell people you know and then we also I had built this club where everybody performed the Matrix and so you know we were suddenly the 1st night we opened that club we were popular as well as it was just and all the kids you know it's a lot of comics in town and they all came and did 3 sets and musicians would come in off the streets and play for free and all these new bands and so you know there was this suddenly this place to work and then for other bands like ourselves. And you really saw this what you felt was San Francisco must been this great creative My gma it well it always has been you know name as I was growing up there was you know the jazz people when they're there with the beatniks in the poets and the writers and you know there's a lot of stuff going on there all the time Lenny Bruce and Ginsberg and. All those people and they all came to the you know the shows and would get up and perform and you know spout their poetry and you know whatever they wanted to do I mean we just had an open door to anybody who was creative and a place for people to get up and you know have a free audience so you know I was. There was a right on the money you know right at the right time and that. It just took off the 1st night we opened and in fact the 1st night we played in that club to make sure it's almost every record company in the world was sitting in the on again. Offering us a contract and I said no no no we're not going to sign anything until we hear from Phil Spector and the 2nd night we played Phil Spector SR is in the audience saying Phil once you get down there Les you know so we went to L.A. And that's still Spector who we didn't get along with at all and walked down on him but you know it was amazing sinners that club over and it was popular. He would have changed aside wouldn't he have the Phil Spector had like the Jefferson Airplane would been terrifying he was too weird for us. Who were your producers who did you would you like to work with well we didn't really have any producers you know we it says on the record they had a producers but those people were there to make sure we didn't you know steal anything or ruin the studio you know because basically we did what we wanted to do in our own way you know the engineers were more important than any producer they just sat there to can make sure you know we were not being rowdy and having parties all the time and. Break man of the engineers and the engineers were the most important people I wanted to ask about the music festivals because you've got quite a distinction I mean the Jefferson Airplane were just by the only group who played would start on Monterey and on some HUNT Yes. Ferry 15 different and character went at least again as it comes down to us when you think about 3 days of peace and love over a New York State that was Woodstock of course and then the mayhem and Margaret Altamont it couldn't be a worse contrast. Well the Woodstock with the hype and the Monterey was the beginning of it and then there was Woodstock which was the high point and then all at the mouth was kind of a low point you know when you get really hot. Tub . What do you remember about your satinwood style. Was it just well I it's not a right well it was gigantic beautiful stage and then you know all these great performances and but we kept from going back to Nome to by helicopter to that hotel and a lot of rain a lot of my you know it was just. Waiting to go on and it was in May We finally got on about I don't know what it was 7 30 in the morning it was horrible you know we will wiped out and people were sleeping in the mud and you know I I don't think we had that much of a good said but you know we we went on when we finally got to go on but it was an amazing get together bands and people and you know it's quite something to see. All these months ago. One goes are piled up the gun kind of civil way and then things really went to hell quite fast why do it get so aggressive was there were people handing out bad stuff well what was the problem it was the. Lead get it hired the group. The angels you know them. Hell Angels to to be the policeman and the place and they were like suddenly lording it over everybody and being kind of crazy and. It was just insane you know it was just suddenly bad vibes all the way around you know because they were beating up people who were around. You're. Not a very. Solid and not enough. To just beat up people and be top of you to their brother obviously on on stage while they they beat up me because I was getting the best of their leader that's why I was punching amount down the back of this semi van and I jumped in and got in the moon and I was beating him down the semi van and I was thinking to myself at that very moment you know doing pretty good and then boom blackout you know they had stopped me and I woke up I had all these boot marks all over me. But you but you were actually singing on stage somehow when the well I was singing on stage and I started the 1st song of the set and I looked down and he's Hell's Angels with pool cubes were beating his poor kid up in front of the stage you know and and lots of times you know want people to gas and they take off their clothes and they try to get you know up to some air or near the stage and you know and I saw the whole crowd just back up and allow these ranges to be does poor kid up and I I just suddenly thought well nobody's listening to mean this kid needs help and so I just jumped down and started pushing the angels away and. These angels sing in water would you do and you should be singing then I said you jerk sighted nobody's listening to me you know messing up my set so I got back up on stage and behind me they started beating up on this kid again so I said well nobody's paying any attention to what I'm doing so I went back and I helped this kid out again and again and all that their leader the guy with the wolf said I was when I was winning that's when the junkie and the knock me out. To Jever me any of them again because they lived well you know in order modeling these people yeah years later that guy Sonny Barger he told Paul he had become a Christian and he had told Paul a morning I'm really sorry. He's become this Jesus freak you know after that it was very funny he apologized to me years later. How do how did your relationship with Paul progress because at one point you decided you had had enough Didn't you need to side you had to leave the Bob Well they all became such big stars you can talk to anybody on their own you know the cocaine and if you can't deal with people and cocaine and everybody in the band even roadies and managers and you know everybody's yelling and fighting and telling everybody you know doing this and that and so it just got boring you know and I said well I'm outta here you know. And and 971 of course was out awful here because I was when Jimi Hendrix died at the Isle of Wight and then him and Janet Janis jumped on the. And I and I was really struck when Janice done. Really moved me I couldn't even go on we had a show at the wonderland then night when we played Friday and the guys were in the band so messed up on cocaine I thought the music was so bad I just like I told her but I can't go on to play that crappy music you know and I just feel so bad and I may sing you know I just stayed home and. Hundreds of people came to my house girls were cooking and even Graham came over to see what was wrong with me and like oh my can't go on and played tonight he said OK man I understand I was I was Bill Graham around the soul more yeah yeah yeah yeah he's he was only guy had any sympathy for me. It took a while than that for the next thing to come along because I think sometimes we think well there was Jefferson Airplane and then suddenly there was Jefferson Starship German starship took a while yeah there was a couple of year or 2 there and the but it was funny you know
