This is what they need to know when they go into the doctors and talk about diseases and illnesses and then I went down to the school to pop in and arrange my next visit to them and on the right I met a guy who just needed a little bit more tender loving care I could listen to him and support him make sure go on a bus heading into the gatehouse which is a drop in center for homeless people in Oxford and I phoned up on their way because who arranged to meet him and advised him back today to see me at Community cupboard I gave my contact details in case I needed them so it's kind of being or all things to all places and just being around really I guess yeah taking my gender from the people I meet. Is open all the time absolutely my heart open suppress so I have a prayer that I pray every day when I set out which friend of mine actually gave me which is Lord let me be attentive to your spirits let me see the things you'd have me say here are the things you'd have me here and go the places you would have me go and then I take my cue from the Holy Spirit. How did you come to this work his ministry I think I've been a chaplain ever since I was a very little girl so when I was 6 years old I used to round up the other latchkey children on my estate and take them into my house where we do a bit of art and craft and have some snacks one of the things we did was we lived in Singapore so we painted coconuts and various other things and then went to the older people on the estate who were lonely and a bit more isolated and we dropped off coconuts outside their front door and so even from a young age I was being there kind of being present my husband jokes that I'm always the last person to leave the building so on one time on a holiday to lunch with my parents in law and I was at their church and so closing I was the 2nd last person to leave the last person is the vicar and sometimes I've been on I remember a time I was on holiday in Taiwan and I was in the shop for an hour just chatting to the guy who needed someone to listen to his stories and kind of reassure him and afterwards I came out and my husband said so who is that guy and I saw the shopkeeper he said surprise you know people over I said why I didn't actually know him but he needed a chaplain and I was there at the right time you always roamed Rose Hill which you know well and where you work spent a lot of time living you were you welcome did all that you do absolutely I think my one biggest drawback is I'm not in enough places anough time and my line manager reference Stephen Moore who's Methodist minister Kennington Rhodes here online walked taught me a new word yesterday which is pastoral So it's when you feel guilty for not giving enough pastoral care to a particular group and he said to me and there's nothing we can do about that but go to that group that you feel passed look out for and explain why you can't be there more often and I did and the lady I spoke serious absolutely really welcoming really kind and said we don't expect you any time but whenever you come it's a joy to have you here and the community here in the Methodist Church in Rose Hill what's happening today so every Wednesday apart from Christmas Day And Years Day We are Penn. Up what we call the community center we open up the Methodist Church and in one room we have food from the food bank and from fair share which we give people who really need it and in one room we also have coffee and tea and toast and cakes and biscuits newspapers clothes books to take away sometimes kitchen utensils to take away on our friends come and they use the space of heat for 2 hours they have a conversation they engage they take what they need to help them sustain themselves and they just come in and touching base one things I absolutely love is that 2 of our team members have been previous clients of ours friends we call them and then our team members and often we have people say you touch me and blessed me so much I want to come back and give something can I get food can I give time can I give my skills and it's amazing kind of it's a real sense of family and everyone sense of community a lot of people say I'm not going to come because I don't need food and we say come for the fellowship come for the toast come for the heating and come to share your story with us I'll come for the tell you that but it starts from for me alone and it's community chaplain. Message with the word Oxford if you want to join in on the show this morning now big publishing community in Oxford West Oxford chair with me where I am a center of Oxford as well and significant communities are growing up around the u.k. For many of them Christianity is an important part of their lives and one school in Como's been celebrating the run up to Christmas open 3 years ago to give the children of Polish parents a chance to learn about eastern european culture and to continue that tradition as they do things like our Also in Polish It's called the Polish school the B.B.C.'s Duchess my son along to find out about how Christmas is celebrated impertinence. Family celebrates Christmas Eve And then on Christmas morning we were like films and stuff like that and what about food. We don't. We don't actually eat turkey or chicken or something like that we fish. That's all that's hard to explain it's like cooked job and like cabbage stick a little of that and then yes. We do sometimes have fish and we have like these woods where you can sit and polish I don't know what it's like it's like the Body of Christ but I don't. Have it put in a chaebol hat. How many people there are we put how much there is and then I'll break a piece and give it to her and I'll give her a big wish like if she had so she can live. And then she does it to me and the next question next person and then I finish and. So the most of the teaches actually teaches more about Jesus because that's what they most believe in but there's other things. Learning But the most is Jesus. He helps to find it difficult or is it quite easy to learn new things and polish English is way easier for me like reading and writing is actually way harder than English trying to get your brain working like I. Was. Let's have a quick check now to Martha she's the deputy head of the Polish school include more how to get today it was amazing it was so good the kids are just so happy we had so many different activities and we had some talk coming over than we and we had obviously Carol's to be honest it makes me feel really proud I didn't realize until we opened the school that there is so many to start with and now it's not only the school where the kids get to learn how to speak and write and read and Polish it's also a place where people can just come in and have a chat and just you know. All the moments and all the relationships that created over the years so you know it's just some sort of a place where all the poles can just come over and talk to each other it's really nice and today you got the Christmas event how important is religion especially the birth of Jesus in Poland the majority of Roman Catholics yes we do believe strongly that you know Jesus was born on Christmas Eve Christmas so we celebrated and Chris . Receiving a Christmas Day and we are trying to bring all the traditions and squeeze them into one day so the kids can enjoy a bit of that as well because obviously majority of them will celebrate Polish way on Christmas Eve and British way on Christmas Day which is amazing because you get obviously 2 different cultures as the by for a nice day and you had another really important guest here we did we had come so coming here all the way from London from Polish I'm to say with his family as well so it was just really nice to feel privileged to have someone like that Joining us for that I. Love the stuff that's peoples my and Samantha along with the deputy head teacher. The Polish consul rather Kaminski talking to the B.B.C.'s Dasha Smith about their traditional Christmas I'd like to say. But I now have one Polish phrase and it's. Gone which means sorry I can't understand you because when I keep going out so you see my friends in Poland we go to pubs people start talking to me because they think I'm Polish and didn't know what to say back so they helped me memorize a phrase they would get his Paul Jones and fear to have you know this is give you my best that previously Radio Oxford. He took his go to details on what today is going to be like No scrapings for me this morning morning good morning we've had a very windy night and it's going to be a blustery day today across Oxford share there will be some decent spells of sunshine but a fair few showers we've had a few even night and the showers could well be heavy with the odd bit of hail and funded to they will move through quite quickly we've got brisk south westerly to westerly winds gusting of 40 miles an hour at times so it's going to be a windy day with a few showers but also some sunshine the top temperatures today of around 8 degrees now as we get through tonight there will still be the risk of one or 2 isolated showers but for most it should be dry with a good deal of clear sky enough of a breeze I think to keep things FRUST free but quite a chilly night with lows 3 degrees tomorrow I think is going to be a pretty decent day the winds will have eased off a little bit so much lighter winds a lot of sunshine the risk of one or 2 showers for most of us though it will be dry the sunshine turning hazy out into the afternoon with highs of 8 degrees Celsius. Join life stories. Radio. We must. See. Richard and Olivia Newton John a b.b.c. Radio Oxford she has been back in costume as Sandy in Greece this week is absolutely brilliant if you search it pops up she and John Travolta together in costume for the 1st time since they made the film a special event in Florida or a sing along a Greece event meet in Greece it was called Love this. Is now 71 John Travolta now 65 and they dressed up to watch it and sing along at the Carl sky Amphitheater in West Palm Beach in Florida is a brilliant picture I urge you to go and have a look at it you wouldn't know it was sort of for decades on for when they dressed up right time to go back to this week's faith plays Let's rejoin had the feast in Rosehill he's with community chaplain Libby Holt Miss Smith at the message this church she's chosen the community cupboard as her faith place and she's been explaining how it works as she puts their 1st visit they pop in and we give them a temporary card which they then exchange for a referral cards and they have to be referred so means tested a number of people out there in the community who do the means testing for us including Salvation Army Rosehill and likewise primary schools Donington advice center rose her advice answer. The porch sometimes places like the gate house although I think they tend to refer them to other people before they refer them to us I think but a number of other places people go and get referred so we know that everyone we're giving food to needs that free and you have enough food and drink for people when they come along it's amazing how God kind of makes things stretch but a number of times being quite close ally looking through to go we've got another 10 families to feed what food if we got last we're always open for donations of donations of food of drink of time scales of enthusiasm and we've got a Christmas party coming up on Wednesday the 18th of December so 3 days time and we're really excited about it we're going to have all our friends come in and they're going to have Christmas gifts we have a son. Does grotto have a Christmas feast but it will cost money so we always need donations so if you have any spare change and you want to bless really bless someone in the community or in Oxford this year please do consider giving us or donation is the need for the food bank. Yeah so when I started I was going through the numbers from last year and I started in July but the community it's been running for 4 years and we're about 10 about 10 people up each week and what we were last year so we have we feed about 30 people in that well 30 families in the course of a week often about 80 individuals in those 30 families sometimes people come in they are feeding a family of 7 Sometimes they come in they're feeding into vidual themselves we never turn anyone away unless they don't have room for which case we can give them through the expiring that week but otherwise unless it's your 1st visit Fortunately that means tested but you're always welcome to come and have hot drinks and tea and toast and cake with us. How many people roughly coming along Christmas party I'm going to guess 50 but I don't know no idea I'm excited to see what's going to happen myself so I have heard all the plans of heard all the stories everyone raves about it both team members and their friends and I'm really looking forward to seeing what the day holds a wonderful time and new help to make it a good Christmas by simply being here and being alongside everyone don't you yeah I mean I love my role and just kind of I don't have to build a church I don't have to get bums on seats I don't have to bring people into a service I just have to be present and share some of the hope and the joy and the love that I get from their injuries us with the people around and it's amazing actually how conversations evolve how they transform how they transpire and I never know what each day is going to hold who I'm going to talk to who's going to pop in what God has in store for me and for the people talking to you but there's always some significant encounter some significant conversation something that the person I'm talking to you says to me thank you bless me and I turn back and say in are you bless me thank you for being present here and I just love how as a chaplain I just get to
