Lose. Lose. Those. Were right. In the charts about similar moments on Saturday my birthday we all piled round to hers with well some of his we followed most of his we drink and we were talking about the music when I think I mentioned yesterday that family a huge fans of the campaign says were also saying just how good Billy Joel they sound so how great some of his chains release Danny was saying that Barry White was saying that Billy Joel was a good writes was well soul of all of that they Smalling on b.b.c. Radio Sheffield and I know him so well and some a January February more good songs to think about just a few songs though that you'll recognize my next guest for the wonderful sing about predicts and he's coming to Sheffield on books 10 in the next. And Barbara's on the line for a chance Good morning Bob Browning How are you I'm absolutely fantastic could you hear some very well indeed I'm very glad to tell you the Edinburgh Festival has finished I'm very happy why are you glad he's finished right because this is just too much if you live here just too much it's like kind of I can just trying to fight living in the middle of Trafalgar Square you know to me where the lions. Are you really are signed such a miserable low but that's just how you operate with the law if you haven't you recently moved to Scotland back to school and from all you know I wasn't in London I was in Lincolnshire in the countryside for many years and I moved to Scotland about 3 years ago moved back and my. It wasn't by any means a done deal because my husband isn't a Scot so there was a long time of deciding whether he would like to do that he's very happy in Edinburgh he says it's a very civilised place so he's very happy to be here and was a political move or did you just think well I want to be back oh no it wasn't a political move at all I'm perfectly happy being in England like the English Very much so I'm quite happy being there but. It's something to do with the City of Edinburgh I did live here is a youngster so is so I do I'm very familiar with it and also I come from about 15 miles away from here so it's like somebody from you know not far from Leeds going to live in Leeds is much the same I was very familiar with this city when I was young it was very very instrumental in teaching me so much of what I knew about music because I come from the folk music and therefore the music that I love most is music that has you know the the love which has come from that time in my life that's really what's important to me and we've heard that you thought music. Lee gave you a relationship with someone that we knew very well who kneecaps though has now been Yeah yeah I love Tony yes I knew Tony when he was performing on the folk scene because at the Vinnie Airlie seventy's probably about 9072 I did a lot of travelling around in in England on my own with a guitar and see case travelling to folk loves to play and I would bump into Tony a lot because he's to go to festivals and things where I would be appearing so I got to know him then and of course John Leonard too has had a career the b.b.c. . And television as well with this movie operations he and I met him around the same time as well and he's from the area too so in terms that if you use it because I've heard you talking to someone recently about folk music but you were saying that that was only worn if you disciplines when it came to music. Well I was like everybody else I was a child of the 1960 s. Who learned pop music more you know I wasn't I didn't know anything about food music till I learnt the music myself we weren't taught in school strangely you'd think in Scotland we'd all be singing you know the Eubanks embrace of Bonny Doon and understand some Sometimes we were we knew those songs but we didn't know much about what I would call folksong and that's a less familiar those so very familiar to people all over the world but in Scotland I learned as a young person aged about 1617 from going to the local folk club all about the music of my own country and all what did that mean so you know it's culturally it's very important I mean it's not a political thing at all it's a cultural thing if you actually plug into where you're from I would encourage people from Sheffield to do exactly the same chance you it is a very proud wonderful city with produced wonderful musicians I mean I think as. Robert Palmer and Andrew Cocker and. And what's his name Paul carrot clearer Yeah I mean they're all from Sheffield their job is Kaka interesting individual too so you've got you culture is very strong it's a got it so it has something to do with knowing what you are and where you're from so you can lug around not about No I went off to be in musical theatre in 1974 in a show called John Paul George Ringo and Bert because my friend Willie Russell had written it that was the connection I knew Willie Russell threw for me sick so willing Russell and I were friends he wrote that show and he said you don't fancy coming in singing the songs they're all Beatle songs which I've never done in my life but he said I think it might be a good idea to not have this compared to the original versions and if a woman sings the songs it's interesting it'll be different take on them for the audience which was a stroke of genius actually and and so that's I mean I would never have worked in the theatre if it hadn't been for Willie and also then I did Blood Brothers which was also written by Willie really wanted me to sing. The songs that most particularly easy terms in Act One of blood brothers are not what I was doing there so my my connection with musical theater is much much less than people think I was not an aviator I was not in chess has not been in very much I've only done spend spend spend blood brothers and John Paul George and have been very lucky because I've won awards for 2 of them right well that says a lot about you we're going to continue to talk to you Barbara takes and she's our guest today she's going to be in Sheffield on the books than she'll be performing for is that we'll find out what we can expect from those performances and also talk to at a bit more about think only a small though she says he Wallace let's have some proper takes. B.b.c. Radio Sheffield this is. B.b.c. Radio show. Bob was with me when having a chat about the fact that she's coming to Sheffield books in September. It's about what you think when you hear that song and then I remember watching you and used to always look as if you were chewing the words while you were singing your mouth used to moving quite a beautiful way I think that was more. Strange body language and while it sounds to me like come on helium of course is very strange because it's 40 years ago I can hardly remember anything about. It seems like a different kind of planet in a different life but if such a good record that I really like and I actually that's not the original That said I don't know I don't know what that is that's probably a live performance very interesting because I noticed what I was singing on there was very different to the original but a British It's a great range when he was done by the wonderful junior Campbell who'd been in the marmalade very famous Scottish guy and. That time it was a really interesting time to be making records and I was very well treated by the record company. Yeah I was going to hurt it. About that as well about being a woman because according to the schools when you say that you will Scotland's best selling female singer so do you feel you Chumpy in Scotland then or do you feel that you sing and do you perform a do well is that just a Guinness Book of Records fact so I'm still more albums than any other female singer from Scotland so it is a kind of happy accident really. I'm a very proud Scots woman yes but my mother was a Scios or so I was born here and raised here but my mother was from Liverpool and a lot of Liverpool people feel very very possessive of me as I very often do when I'm walking and Liverpool I have lots and lots of very strong memories from one side of my family is from that brilliant city so therefore I have my feet very often astride the border and nice though it is very nice it's very very nice indeed and I feel great closeness to people and if I feel I have a link with them very much to this and I do so much live work I mean my my my my bread and butter my career is based on live work I mean people say to me or I don't see you on television and I kind of look at them and I playfully say to them what do you think I would do on television where we're where do you think I would agree or on television and they go I suppose you're right really because there's nothing well there's nothing on a television different because when I was growing up you want television always yes but because there was a lot of things where someone like me could be on television saying in a song as a guest on something there's nothing like that know they so so yeah and it's a different world so therefore I you know I'm not bothered about that because I started off singing in folk clubs and I've always been alive. Artists us what I do that's what I learn to do I'm probably best at that than anything I've ever done is what you enjoy Yeah I do ally to making contact with people oh so like selecting music to sing for people and say What do you think of this I like this I hope you do you write much new stuff them but I'm not much of a writer I do very little writing I do on each album I make There's probably one song written by me and arranged by Troy don't actually with whom I work but I don't actually do much I don't see myself as a writer I see myself as an interpreter of songs and having come from the world of folk music where folk song and traditional songs of Scotland and England and Ireland and most particularly I don't see anything wrong in interpreting music I mean I think it's probably much overlooked and many people who call themselves songwriters really are not songs picture you know when you think they're just expressing themselves which is cool but it's not really proper songs I mean it's song writing is a real skill struggle to turn stuff I just listen to music by random human impulse Simon and James Taylor you know exactly what I mean I do know what I mean we're talking about Billy Joel is a Leo and his powerful is said that he's writing as well I want people to get into his poverty and enough skew questions and go a couple of responses to that and he's got into it she says Please thank Barbara for all the years of pleasure his singing has given us on long may continue with my lovely Well that's lovely I hope they're going to come to Sheffield of boxing to see us play that would be nice wouldn't say it would be very nice particularly Yeah I meet people after the show and I sign autographs and C.D.'s and stuff for people so I usually get to meet the people who are interested in me in each area I play that's lovely Mr T.'s got in so she's got a couple of questions in the middle for this one because he can. It's with a question that I wanted to ask you he's asked you which is your favorite as a pop song by another Aussies and I wanted to ask you as well about is the rest song that you wish you'd been able to sing No I think my favorite probably my for this is 2 favorites of mine one would be midnight at the Oasis by Larry Himmel and the other would probably be Wichita Lineman by Glen Campbell Yes I think they're probably the most know there might there's probably about half a dozen more that I would choose but not that many because I think things tend to be not that I don't think is today I think music is overproduced today but there's not there's always been a lot of rubbish or internal There's always been a few absolutely beautiful highlights for just kind of throw to the surface kind of . Those are different and interesting to see them you know so on the 24th of September the 25th of September when you're in our area what will we hear then will we hear on Somy when we hear interpretations of the people songs that you will hear is a great mixture of stuff you know there will be some or all songs particularly another suitcase in another hall and. Caravan and i
