Presented with a gift a poster of the show and say we've got tickets to go watch this. And yesterday was the day we went to watch it absolutely brilliant believe everything you hear about it it's no it's not your traditional musical you know that. You go along in the slots of singing and dancing yes that's all in there but the jungle of music they use is rap and hip hop to tell the story and I saw a documentary on it the night before did this on purpose just kind of general Alexander Hamilton and he was kind of the forefather who never was he was never really given the credit for everything he did in terms of creating what were initially the Federalist Papers which then I went on to become the Constitution of the United States. I can be president because I will come brazen No No spoilers but able to born in America but anyway that's besides the point because it's a fantastic story told brilliantly so creative and the choreography and the movement of the I mean there's no mic norm with the sets and things like that. I need not go on about the challenging times in which we are now living but to build the Kingdom of God that is so central to the teaching of Jesus we need to really engage with the world around us as it is in order for it to become what Jesus wants it to be just a brief extract there of this morning's in praise of God She's on the way from half past 6. In praise of God Today we bid farewell to the Anglican Bishop of Stafford The Right Reverend Jeff amas the service from Stoke minster is hosted by the rector of the Reverend Andrew Wiggins sing to God's you kingdoms of. Make music in praise of the lot we gather at Stoke Minster a place of Christian worship for 1400 years. To celebrate skulled spirits alive and active in the mission of the church across Stafford share well come in this place our service is led by Bishop Jeff and us the Bishop of Stafford as he prepares for retirement and bits of us fail Well today we're drawn together. Civic leaders from different churches together we give thanks to God it's. My guess is there's nothing on the telly this afternoon. It is so good to see all of you here and to be sharing with so many people right across North and East stuff and cheer through the good offices of b.b.c. Radio Stoke I hope that we are all going to enjoy our time together and that you will be as excited as we are about the many good things that are happening in our churches right across this area every single person in this country technically belongs to an Anglican Church of England parish but although the invitation is there not everyone makes a conscious decision to take that invitation up and become involved in their local church I'm sure it will astound you to know that some dismissed the church as being a bit dull or a bit irrelevant a somebody perhaps a little bit more graphically expressed it the church 2 is often failing to scratch where people are itching we hope that you will realize that most of our churches are actually vibrant worshipping communities that are confident in living out what Jesus has taught us. And who love the community that they try to serve increasingly God's people are being set free to put their faith into practice wherever they are and not just in a building for an hour on a Sunday morning and of course this is totally in accord with the teaching of Jesus himself who gave those who follow him a very clear commission and my wife and is now going to remind us of this commission by reading to us from St Matthew's gospel now the 11 disciples went to Galilee to the mountain to which Jesus had Jesus had direct them when they saw him they worshiped him but some doubted it and Jesus came and said to them all off in heaven and on earth has been given to me go there for a make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to pay everything that I have commanded to you and remember I am with you always to the end of the age this is the word of the little and. The next him reflects the sense of Christianity being about engaging with the reality of the world around us and and I feel very strongly about this it's about giving a voice to the voiceless. Is . It. Because. He. Told. A. Bigot. He. Father of all we thank you for the diversity of gif see you have given us through your gracious spirits as we celebrate today there are many different ways we've been called to serve you strengthen us in your service give us confidence in our calling father by your spirits bring in your kingdom father though we are many and drawn to you in many different ways yet we are one body in your son our Savior grants us to dwell in the unit see of your Holy Spirits as we seek to follow in the footsteps of all your saying its father by your spirits bring in your kingdom. Of our Lord Jesus Christ as we seek to follow in the footsteps of some chance. We give thanks for our ecumenical partners in the Gospel that together we made this your call and share the good news. By your spirit it's yours. Father of all you've created us to be one humanity drawn from many people's cultures and nations deeper. Unites us with our neighbors of all faiths and. As we strive to work together to live in justice and in peace father by your spirits bring here. We are proud as. In the stats she says it's. True Watson happen. To be defined by kingdom come thy will be tough on a citizen. Give us this day our daily bread if i give us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for thy kingdom. Laurie. As we have shared in thanksgiving. So we sing in prayer it's. The small. Oh give thanks for the privilege of being able to ordain 51 men and women as priests during my time a space ship of staff it and of being able to confirm 1917 candidates in their Christian faith. Many indeed of those I have confirmed have been younger people keen to live their lives according to the teaching of Jesus and some of them have gone on to number among those 51 new priests the real good news is that the Church of England is in good shape across staff a chair but of course it could be in even better shape if you are thinking or didn't realize your parish church was doing anything like but then why not go along and help them and if you are thinking or I don't think our parish church does anything like that then why not go along and started. I need not go on about the challenging times in which we are now living but to build the Kingdom of God that is so central to the teaching of Jesus we need to really engage with the world around us as it ease in order for it to become what Jesus wants it to be the dices of lips field has a clear vision as we follow Christ in the footsteps of the 1st bishop of Lichfield chat we pray that the 2000000 people in our diocese encounters a church that is confident in the Gospel knows and loves its communities how does excited to find God already at work in the world re pray for a church that reflects the richness and variety of these communities we pray for a church the partners with others in seeking the common good working for justice as people of hope and and I arrived in the Star System 2010 and of really enjoyed being part of the journey but now it does seem right to step aside and allow a new bishop to lead you into the next decade retirement. Has not been an easy choice to make it is no secret that we really enjoy being part of this diocese and we have made so many friends when we got married we were also living in an exciting and caring community in the heart of London the parish gave us a wedding reception as our present around 10 pm hints were dropped that Anne and I should leave and start our honeymoon so they could concentrate on the dancing rather than bothering about us. We did to go. But the party carried on without us until 4 a m. . Yes my wife and I were the cause of the lowest Sunday attendance in the whole history of support use. Her Indoors or Anna some of you know her has been alongside me throughout my ordained ministry and quite frankly I would not have been able to do it without her her constant reminders to me to be nice. Especially when under pressure and coping with a challenging situation may be irritating but they have been so necessary and how she has ever managed to be a clergy partner bring up 2 amazing children and now grandchildren and follow her own vocation as a doctor is way beyond me. And such a debt of gratitude but of course in the end it is to God that the glory should be given a My prayer is that we will all continue to know the love that our Lord has for us and reflect that love in order we say and do. So that others may discover this life giving love for themselves what I have been adequately trying to do since I was ordained in 1903 to 4 then in the late capacity is summed up in the words of our next to him and it will be with confidence that God will bless the sophistical area with the right person to be the bishop for the nests exciting period in the life of the church here the jury in this him I should return the Bishop of staff it's close here or possible stuff the Bishop Michael for his safekeeping during the vacancy that new bishop would indeed be blessed by being called to work in such a beautiful part of the country with such wonderful people we shall go out with hope of resurrection. Odd. You'll see that Bishop Jeffs has handed over his pastoral stuff the sign of his oath already which means that I'm going to take control of this order of service from now on. Because you may have noticed that there is something missing within it there is what is very sad news for Stafford share as Bishop Jeff and and leave us and we need to say something about that we're not going to have lots and lots of eulogies this is not a funeral and we go tonight. We are here to praise you and not just to bury you I. Going to ask her majesty's. Left Anant in doesn't say a little bit about Jeff's involvement in city county and civic life and then just got several dozen points to make. I'm saluted delighted to be asked to say a few words to express our appreciation to the contribution that Bishop Geoff has made to our communities and to our civic structures it was of course as you all marrow of very good fortune to inherit Bishop Jeff we soon realized that we were blessed with a couple who from that day onwards have consistently displayed such wonderful kindness and generosity to whoever they have met and always with such humility Bishop Jeff has involved himself in as much and as many communities as he could he has ensured that the care guidance and support that the Anglican Church could provide has been available to all Jeffords chaired the hardship Commission which brings together various interested groups alongside the city council to discuss the reasons for and tackle the challenges of poverty within this city in the last 7 and a half years since I took on my role wherever I go in this city and indeed in North and the staff which are the ship Jeff is there in fact my wife is convinced. That Jeff has been very successfully cloned. But I know that there are many many more occasions when I'm not present that Jeff is in addition to his parishes responsibilities he's involved in chaplains is into universities for prisons 3 large and several other small hospitals a school to hospices and of course his work with the night church and the Regent Theatre and through that he has automatically been in touch with a much wider cross-section of people locally how many of us have seen Jeff smiling face in the concourse before a show at The Regent without fully appreciating the vital support that he's able to provide to members of the acting profession who have the same challenges we all face but without access to their normal support structures severely limited when they're on top he has made it his business to show an interest in and to learn about all of our varied communities Jaf with and supporters done all this whilst displaying great personal happiness and good humor to all they meet they both as you know have a very good sense of humor we have enjoyed humorous moments as several events that we've jointly attended and in particular I think we will both remember our 1st rather visit in our respective roles back in 2012 at the y.m.c.a. Which incidentally Jeff has been president of for several years Geoff and and to you both from a county perspective we say a massive thank you thankyou for enriching our lives by bringing so much kindness guidance comfort and support to us all we wish you a happy retirement and we know that it is inevitable that you'll soon be busy again in Southampton but hopefully with much more opportunity to be a bigger part. Of your grandchildren as young lives we will miss you but what you have done for us in this part of the loop feel Darcis will never be forgotten and the party will continue thank you. Of the I just want to say one word Rocky 3 words about Jeff's ministry as a priest and a bishop and the 3 words that stand out for me are passion wisdom and kindness this passion we've seen that erupt a few times this evening at Jeff really really believes not only with his mind but with his heart and Jeff is very wise he is a very shrewd judge of character and I have noticed the way in which he listens beneath the surface if you like listens for what has not been said and that insight into people's characters has been hugely important for us as a diocese as for several years Jeff was our Episcopal lead on safeguarding and Jeff is a very kind person and indeed a very kind Bishop it's obvious that he is friendly and approachable and cheerful but it goes beyond that there is something about Jeff's kindness that reaches out to the lonely that is patient with the slow that is always ready to give
