after leading them to win the fa cup last season, this season hasn't gone as well. they've made their worst start to a premier league campaign in 46 years, are 15th in the table and haven't won any of their last seven league games. so, what's going wrong at the emirates? joe lynskey reports. arsenal used to be the team that a lwa ys arsenal used to be the team that always made the top four. this season, always made the top four. this season, as always made the top four. this season, as it stands, they're 15. the season, as it stands, they're15. the 2-1 season, as it stands, they're15. the 2—1 loss at everton was their fifth in seven games and mikel arteta now has to solve the age—old puzzle, how do you turn 18 round when it is in freefall? i like to look around me, whether it is the staff, coach, players, and i want to see fighters. normally when that happens, you have two types of people, fighters and victims. people who fight, people who contribute, and people who are ready to give everything to the cause in this moment. arteta has been in charge 110w moment. arteta has been in charge now for over a year. the early signs we re now for over a year. the early signs were good, arsenal won the cup and had two wins at the start of the season. had two wins at the start of the season. but in the last ten games it has fallen apart. only sheffield united have got fewer points in those games, and most of arsenal's goals have been penalties. they are just looking points off the bottom three, so cannot get any worse?m is awful, gary, no creativity, players going through the motions, not working hard enough, not closing down, and arteta should be a worried man relying on those group of players to track try to save his job. they will stay up, won't they? i would not be social, not with that starting team, not with the attitude of some of those players, no. arsenal's next match is a carabao cup quarterfinal, against manchester city, where arteta was once assistant. taking questions before that match, he brought his own statistics. when you look at the perspective, how we are losing football matches and how we are where we are, it is pretty incredible. against everton, we won the game with 25% chance of winning. last weekend, it is 67% chance of winning any premier league game in history, and 9% of losing, and you lose. arsenal need to make sense of it quickly, but this time of year, games come fast, and so do changes. in sam alla rdyce's games come fast, and so do changes. in sam allardyce's first match, west brom found no bounce, losing 3—0. in the championship, watford have sacked their boss, even though they are fifth. and neil lennon knows that one more defeat could see him depart celtic. they won the cup on sunday. this season is unique but in football, one thing rarely changes, when you're a manager losing games, you don't get much time. there was a huge fanfare when the world cup—winning american alex morgan arrived at tottenahm women. admitedly, she had just had a baby and was there to train and get fit, but her five appearances created a huge buzz around the club. however, morgan has announced that she'll be leaving the wsl to go back to the states in the new year. joining us now to tell us more about it is bbc football reporter emma sanders. why is she leaving now, halfway through the season? after giving birth in may, the culture of football, over here in europe, it is a bit more physical, so she will go back to orlando where they start pre—season in march and she will be much betterfor pre—season in march and she will be much better for the pre—season in march and she will be much betterfor the pre—season in england and she will have that match fitness which she has been craving. she only played five games, and there was a lot of build—up to her coming onto the pitch because she sat on the sidelines for quite a while watching on, despite that, what an impact she made? yes, she scored two goals in those five appearances, albeit from the penalty spot, but i think her impact probably off the pitch was perhaps felt more, she brought global attention to tottenham hotspur and she brought a lot of interest over from the states, to the wsl, alongside many of the other american players that have come to the wsl this season. so she has certainly raised the profile of the english game, and we've already seen today some of her teammates putting notes out on social media thanking her for the experience that she has passed onto them and just being around somebody of that or and celebrity status is perhaps new to a lot of these spurs players in the wsl. so, she has certainly had an impact off the pitch and she has scored two goals, so she has done her bit on the pitch as well. exactly. we're just watching some pictures of alex morgan at the moment. those two girls were penalties but as you said, it seems like the rest of the players absolutely loved her. they will have been in awe of her because of her achievements, but she probably bonded everybody together, and that attitude that she had coming from the states, and such a mentality, do you think that maybe that she brought to the spurs squad? absolutely. she is a two—time world cup winner, she has bags of experience, she knows what it takes to perform week in, week out, at an elite level. some of these spurs players, some of them were in the fifth tier years ago. so, they have come through the system in english football, and to have somebody who has had that experience at the top of the game, who knows what it takes to win big matches, to be around them on the training ground, on match days, is something that really is invaluable to them. that winning mentality that we see that a lot of american players have, she has brought over to england and to totte n ha m brought over to england and to tottenham hotspur during her time there. we are just looking at some pictures of her looking very cold, shivering in the stands, looking on. the weather probably wasn't what she had anticipated when she came over to england. where do you think she is going to go when she goes back to america? 0h, who knows? the american league is absolutely impossible to predict. it would not surprise me if she tries to stay in orlando, just because it has been such a rough year, given the coronavirus pandemic and having a newborn, i think she will want some stability and just wanting to say in the same area for a while, which was another reason is perhaps why she has left after only a few months in england, she probably just wanted to a few months in england, she probablyjust wanted to get back and settle down a little bit. i don't think she will be looking to move too soon, but who knows of? mr, thank you so much for your time. time for some of the other sports news stories around today. owen farrell, maro itoje, billy and mako vunipola may not play a competitive league game for saracens before next year's six nations. that's after the announcement that the new rugby championship season won't start until march. saracens say they're trying to set up a pre—season cup competition. british tennis number one dan evans has got his first win of the battle of the brits premier league event in roehampton. he beatjan choinski in straight sets, winning 7—5, 6—0. there were also wins for liam broady and heather watson. fomer south african cricketer jacques kallis hasjoined england's coaching team for their upcoming tour of sri lanka. he's going to be working as a batting coaching consultant for the two—match test series which begins on january the 14th. and finally, you may have seen manchester united forward marcus rashford winning a special award on bbc sport personality of the year last night. well, tonight on bbc one you can see the bbc‘s documentary following rashford's campaign to help feed the uk's poorest families. here's a clip of when the prime minister gave him a call. sorry to trouble you... no, igot no, i got an assist today. just time to update you on the match between burnley and wolves, it is still 2—0 to burnley. that's all from sportsday. we'll have more throughout the evening. good evening. monday was a day of mixed blessings, but at least in the south it was mild. the mild air is going to stay across central and southern england for another day at least, with a northerly wind coming in across scotland. it means clearer skies here, and the best of the sunshine for scotland and northern ireland and northern england. further south, it stays rather grey. here, milder, around 8—13 c. across much of scotla nd around 8—13 c. across much of scotland and northern ireland, top temperature in the afternoon will be 5-7. on temperature in the afternoon will be 5—7. on wednesday we will see another low pressure coming into the south—west, which will bring a spell of wet weather. the wind direction still coming from the south—west, a warm sauce, so that is the northerly when still producing the colder feel across scotland. further showers here, but in northern areas, still largely dry and fine. in the south—west, we could have some heavier rain, which may lead to a speu heavier rain, which may lead to a spell of localised flooding. weather warnings have been issued. the low pressure will start to drift away and has we head towards christmas eve, high pressure is set to build in from the atlantic and that will quieten things down. the isobars are almost coming from a vertical, a northerly wind descending across the country. christmas eve, largely fine, some sunshine coming through and quieter, but colder, than of late. that will continue to be the theme on christmas day. the high pressure staying with us, the isobars opening out a little, so, lighter winds, but with clear skies, it could lead to a localised frost. iam not it could lead to a localised frost. i am not sure it is going to be a white christmas, by any means, but it could be a white christmas in terms of frost first thing on christmas morning. there should be some sunshine to go with it, christmas day looks largely fine and quiet. but still on the cold side. we will start to see signs of a change on boxing day. so that quiet speu change on boxing day. so that quiet spell is pretty short lived. wet and windy weather coming once again, and as it bumps into some colder air, there will be some snow, chiefly on higher ground. so, central and southern england will be overcast on saturday but should stay dry during daylight hours, wetter further north and west. moving out of saturday into sunday, it looks likely that low pressure is going to dominate. plenty of isobars, the winds will remaina plenty of isobars, the winds will remain a feature, and they will be coming from the north, staying u nsettled, coming from the north, staying unsettled, but noticeably colder. it is worth bearing in mind. so, as we close out the year of 2020, it looks likely that it will stay unsettled, with heavy rain at times, accompanied by strong winds, and because it stays pretty cold, it could get quite interesting. take care. hello, i'm ros atkins, this is outside source. more than a0 nations have now banned flights from the uk because of a new variant of coronavirus. despite huge queues at the port of dover, borisjohnson says most supplies are still getting through. the vast majority of food, medicines and other supplies are coming and going as normal. we will take a look at this new variant of coronavirus in the uk to see how infectious it is. the more we allow it to spread the more opportunity it has to change. opportunity it has to change. and vaccinations will begin across the european union next week
