Fifa investigates paul pogbas £89 million transfer from juventus to Manchester United last summer. And pigs do fly. 50 years after pink floyds Debut Album A Celebration and exhibition to mark the anniversary. Its 5 oclock, good afternoon. President trump has defended his decision to sack the head of the fbi without warning saying hed lost the confidence of almost everyone in washington. But critics from both sides say the dismissal of james comey smacks of a cover up, to do with the agencys investigation into possible collusion between the trump president ial campaign and russia. From washington, heres rajini vaidyanathan. Absolutely explosive news from washington. This is a fox news alert. James comey has been fired. Politics in the time of trump is often unpredictable but this was a political bombshell that few saw coming. Back in washington today james comey was in los angeles, he did not know he had been sacked. Why did not know he had been sacked. Why did you fired James Comey Chris rock he was not doing a good job. Did it affect you meeting with the russians today . Not at all. He was sent a letter by the president. You hereby terminated and removed from office immediately. I greatly appreciate you inform me on three separate occasions that im not under investigation but i concur with the judgment of the justice investigation but i concur with the judgment of Thejustice Department that you are not able to effectively lead the bureau. Except that the Trump Campaign is being investigated the fbi for possible links to russia. James comey was leading that enquiry. The white house that he is gone because of the way he handled another investigation, last year, the one into Hillary Clinton and her e mails but democrats do not buy that. Mr president , theres little reason think that mr rosensteins letter is the true reason that President Trump fired Director Comey. Because if the administration truly had objections to the way Director Comey handled the Clinton Investigation, they would have had them the minute the president got into office. But he did not fired Director Comey then. The question is why did it happen last night. Those backing the president s actions say it has nothing to do with russia. The leadership of the fbi is kind of hard, that were wondering about firing a guide when there are bigger drops. Let me ask if russia had a pa rt drops. Let me ask if russia had a part to play in the decision of President Trump, in your opinion . Not according to the latter. Let me tell you about russia, they interfere in our election and i want to punish russia. Democrats on capitol hill are calling for an independent Special Prosecutor to Ta Ke IndependentSpecial Prosecutor to take over the Russian Investigation. They fear that anyone that President Trump picks to become the new fbi director would not be impartial. The white house might say that none of this has anything to do with russia, but russia is once again the focus of conversation here in washington. Lets cross to washington and speak to our correspondent rajini vaidyanathan. Weve also heard from Vice President mike pence saying that the sacking showed strong leadership. That is right, those comments from the Vice President reiterating what the president reiterating what the president said just now but the white house as well that this has nothing to do with russia. He said the president made the right decision, that it was a strong decision, that it was a strong decision at the right time. He said it was nothing to do with the russian probe and no evidence of collusion between the Trump Campaign and russian officials. He went on to say that American People need to have confidence in the fbi. One of the comments mike pence made, the Vice President , saying he made a strong decision of the right time, well people here in capitol hill where i am now, Many Democrats, are asking why now. Why did President Trump decide to do this now. There are some reports coming out now in some american newspapers Thatjames Comey had actually asked for more money for the Russian Investigation and some speculating about whether that might be the reason. Of course the line from the administration is this is about the Hillary Clinton e mail. But many here just to not buy that explanation. And just put it in context, it is incredibly unusualfor a president it in context, it is incredibly unusual for a president to sack the director of the fbi . Incredibly unusual. It has only happened once before under bill clinton. That was over and ethics scandal involving that fbi director at the time. It is usual that they serve a ten year term, there are appointed by the president , confirmed by the senate and then effectively left to do theirjob. Many and then effectively left to do their job. Many people and then effectively left to do theirjob. Many people have raised concerns about where this leaves the legitimacy of the Justice System under President Trump. His critics point out that this is not the first judicial sacking he has conducted since office. He fired sally yates who was acting Attorney General over his travel ban. So his critics say his travel ban. So his critics say his trying to interfere in the process. Of course as we heard from people like mike pence and the president himself, they simply think james comey was not doing a good job and even point to the fact that democrats have criticised the way that james comey handled the Hillary ClintonE Mail Investigation. But there arent Many Democrats i have spoken to here in the senate who say that they were angry because of the E Mail Investigation but russia is front and centre of everything and there are now calling for a Special Prosecutor to take over the investigation into the Trump Campaign and its possible links with russia. Republicans are saying it is not necessary, there are already a number of congressional committees looking into the possible ties with russia as well as an fbi investigation. Some are concerned about who becomes the next fbi director because of course it will be up to President Trump to appoint them. Thank you very much. Stay with us here on the news at five because shortly after half past well speak to evan mcmullin, a former cia officer who ran against both mr trump and mrs clinton for the presidency hes been deeply critical of the president s decision to fire james comey. The Crown Prosecution Service has said no conservative politicians or officials will be charged with breaking rules on election Campaign Spending in 2015. They said it did not meet the test for further action. They said it did not meet the test forfurther action. One they said it did not meet the test for further action. One case they said it did not meet the test forfurther action. One case is still under consideration, the south thanet constituency in kent. With me is our Home Affairs Correspondent danny shaw. What are they saying tonight . This was about how the conservatives spent their money on battle buses which were touring marginal constituencies in the campaign for the 2015 General Election. There we re the 2015 General Election. There were concerns that the spending on those battle buses was not recorded locally as it shouldve been but was pa rt locally as it shouldve been but was part of the National Spending return. There are strict rules about how much parties spend locally on their candidates and campaigns. The Electoral Commission had already find the Conservative Party £7,000 for electoral expenses irregularities and the matter came to the police and files were passed to the police and files were passed to the police and files were passed to the Crown Prosecution Service in respect to all 30 candidates and party agents at the last election. The cbs has decided that in all but one case there will be no charges, no one will be prosecuted because although it said the returns from the party may have been inaccurate, there was insufficient evidence to prove that anyone had acted dishonestly. They had been told, the agents have been told by central office, Conservative Party headquarters, that this is spending was part of a national campaign. Thank you very much. Billions of pounds invested in schools thats what both labour and the Liberal Democrats are promising if they win the General Election. Labour says it would plough five billion pounds more into schools in england annually by 2022. The lib dems say they would invest an extra Seven Billion across the uk over a period of four years. Our political correspondent, leila nathoo, has been looking at their plans. Its an issue thats galvanised parents and teachers across england. Now School Funding is firmly on the election agenda. Labour is pledging to transform an Education System it says has been starved of money. Every child, whatever their background, will be given the opportunity to unlock their full potential. We will give further and Technical Education the parity of esteem it deserves, notjust with warm words, but with bold action. Labour are promising to create a National Education service. The party says by 2022 schools in england will get a £4. 8 billion annual boost. With £335 million extra to cushion losses from changes to the way government money is allocated. Under the plans, Education Maintenance Allowance for College Students and University Grants would both be reintroduced. And adults would be able to retrain for free. Pouring more money into the mix is also the Liberal Democrats plan. £6 billion for schools in england over four years and extra for the devolved administrations. Two thirds of schools, it now turns out today, are planning to lay off at least one teacher, lose at least one teaching post, in the next two months. Under that kind of pressure, there needs to be a response, a fully costed response, to build a future for all of our children, so we can have decent education and be confident in that. Big plans, though, come with big bills. Both parties say they would reverse cuts to Corporation Tax to fund schools. Labour says the rate would rise from 19 to 26 by 2020. The labour party proposals would certainly raise more than enough from Corporation Tax to pay for these increases in School Funding. But of course an increase in Corporation Tax has significant economic effects. It will reduce investment by companies in the uk and in the long run it wont raise as much as it might in the short run. As companies change their behaviour. Headteachers have protested that they are facing the biggest squeeze on
