For the victims of coronavirus. I want you to know you are not alone. My Husbands Administration will not stop fighting until there is an effective treatment or vaccine available to everyone. The new world of work bbc Research Reveals 50 major uk companies arent planning to have all their staff back in the office anytime soon. And, hiding in plain sight we visit some of the local gems people have discovered thanks to lockdown. And coming up on bbc news lionel messi is looking for a new club. The argentine wants to leave barcelona, and could the premier league be his next destination . Good afternoon and welcome to the bbc news at one. Two people have died, and another has been seriously injured, in the us city of kenosha, during violent protests about the Police Shooting of an unarmed black man. Jacob blake, whos 29, is now paralysed, after being shot in the back by officers. For a third night, demonstrators clashed with riot police, and a curfew in the wisconsin city was widely ignored. Jacob blakes mother has appealed for an end to the violence. A warning that you may find some images injames robbins report distressing. The third night of protests in kenosha, sparked by the Police Shooting on sunday, and clashes become far more serious. Once again, some protesters attack vehicles and property but, this time, other citizens are also out on the streets. Apparently, to protect property. At least one seems to have been armed. As mobile phone footage, which includes distressing images, appears to show. One sequence shows a man carrying a long barrelled gun and other people running. Stay right there. In the aftermath, an injured person can be seen on the ground, people try to help. Police in a nearby vehicle announce theyre coming out to take charge and assist. Stay right there, were coming out to you. Now, what looks like an armed man with hands up walks towards police lines, as the Security Forces move in to try to take back control. All this follows the shooting by police on sunday of jacob blake, unarmed and now paralysed and with many injuries. His family are distraught, angry, demanding justice, but also healing. They shot my son. Seven times. Seven times. Like he didnt matter. But my son matters. Hes a human being and he matters. Do Jacob Justice on this level and examine your hurts. Yes. We need healing. Kenosha, a small city, population around 100,000, has never seen anything like this before. So much seems to be at risk, and people locally and across the United States are divided over the rights and wrongs of protest, sometimes violent. I mean, i understand protesting, peacefully protesting, thats fine, go for it, peacefully protest. But dont burn down buildings, dont break windows and dont mess up other peoples stuff. Looting, burning, unfortunately, is part of it. How do you compare brick and mortar to life . Once again, protests are spreading to other cities where feelings were already running very high after previous Police Shootings. Cities including portland, oregon and minneapolis in minnesota, neighbouring state of wisconsin. The entire movement behind black lives matter and the deep divisions over race and discrimination in the United States are, now more than ever, driving serious political debate as a critically important president ial election gathers pace. James robbins, bbc news. Cbs correspondent mola lenghi is in kenosha. How would you describe the situation and the atmosphere in the city right now . Well, right now early morning, so now . Well, right now early morning, so it is certainly a lot, then we have seen in the overnight hours with protests. But last night may have been a little calmer in terms of destruction to property, it may have been the most violent night. We saw two people who were killed in that shooting, it is unclear if the protests sparked the shooting. Police are still searching for the shooter or shooters. But the shooting did happen during and near the protests. Not too far from where we are right here, this is the Kenosha County courthouse, it has been a front line in a stand off between police and the protesters. You see the steel fencing erected by Police Yesterday to protect themselves and protect some of the government buildings here at the courthouse, the police department. It seems to do that last night, but certainly it has done nothing to reduce the tension. The protesters say they will continue to come out here, they will keep protesting until some sort of action is taken. They are demanding justice is what they call it, but more specifically, they call it, but more specifically, they want charges to be filed against the officers, they want firings of these officers which is also what the family of jacob blake is calling for, but they are calling for peaceful protests. All right, thank you, with cbs news, mola lenghi. Secondary pupils in england will have to wear a Face Covering in communal areas of any school in a local lockdown region, after the government reversed its guidance. And the headteacher of any secondary school also now has the right to introduce mask wearing. This lunchtime, on a visit to a school, the Prime Minister said the rules were changed after the World Health Organization update its advice, though the government said as recently as yesterday morning that the measure was unnecessary. The Welsh Government is due to address the issue later today. Sarah campbell reports. A new school year, and there is a lot for these pupils in leicestershire to get used to. Hand sanitising and keeping a safe distance from classmates are all now part of the routine. Have a little think and just discuss among yourselves. No face masks here this morning, but should this area go back into a local lockdown, they would be compulsory in communal areas like corridors. And in any secondary school in england, it will now be up to headteachers to decide if Face Coverings should be worn. I welcome that news. I think it makes perfect sense. And this school itself was in lockdown just a couple of weeks ago, so that would have affected us, but i like the fact that the government decision has empowered head teachers to make the decision thats best for their particular context. These are some of the first pupils in england to go back to school after the long break, and dont seem fazed by the thought of having to wear a Face Covering in school. I would feel safer wearing a face mask but, sometimes, it can be slightly suffocating, you dont feel very at ease, not very comfortable. Its protecting other people, as well as yourself, and it makes you feel very safe in the school. It will be different, but i think it will be better for our safety. Today, the Prime Minister explained why the change in advice on Face Coverings was made. In a school where theres a hotspot, then it probably does make sense, in confined areas outside the classroom, to use a Face Covering in the corridor and elsewhere. Because as they discovered in scotland, where they had the kids in, the pupils in for at least a couple of weeks now, what they found was that it was raining outside, people were coming in and they were congregating in the corridors and the move to Face Coverings, they thought, was sensible. From monday, in Northern Ireland, all secondary School Pupils will be required to wear Face Coverings in shared spaces, like corridors and libraries. Its a similar story in scotland, with the shared spaces also including school buses. A decision on Face Coverings in welsh schools is expected later today. The opposition have questioned why england hasnt gone as far as scotland and Northern Ireland. My only grievance with this is that it doesnt go far enough. Its a partial u turn by the government and i wish they had gone the full u turn and said, all schools, all secondary schools, children over the age of 12 must wearface masks in communal areas. Criticism has also been levelled at the governments u turn from conservative mps. We need the firm smack of government behind this. We need to send a message out that schools are a safe setting. We know that the risks are so low, you are sadly more likely to see your child lose their life through getting to school than actually the covid pandemic. And, really, we need to send a message out that school is a place where children can be themselves, can learn, can thrive and really take their opportunities and not be scared. The new guidelines in england come into our political correspondent, leila nathoo, is at westminster. The changing guidance for children over 12 wearing face masks where transmission is high and in communal areas, that has changed and scotland and Northern Ireland have changed their policy is to say children should wear face masks and their policy is to say children should wearface masks and communal areas in all schools and education secretary Gavin Williamson said today there had been concern from pa rents today there had been concern from parents and teachers, so there has been a change of heart for areas in local lockdown restrictions and head teachers have been given the discretion to make decisions for their schools, although unions are saying it shouldnt be their responsibility. It was telling we heard from Gavin Williamson today it was about an extra layer of reassurance for those areas where the virus is transmitting more widely, so it is about confidence. You heard him also say there was no intention to extend this at the moment to all schools. Borisjohnson this afternoon describing the idea of facemasks in classrooms as nonsense. So i think it is clear this is about as far as they want to go and the bottom line does seem to be about getting children back to school in full, borisjohnson saying this afternoon children have spent too much time out of school. So i think the calculation appears to be that if more facemasks can be worn in more settings, that could help them achieve that goal. Thank you very much, leila nathoo. The us first lady, melania trump, took centre stage on day two of the Republican National convention, where she made the case for president trumps re election in november. Speaking from the rose garden at the white house, she gave a personal speech, calling for racial unity following the clashes in wisconsin, and praised her husband for being honest. The convention also heard from the president s youngest daughter, tiffany. Our north america correspondent peter bowes reports. We hold these truths to be self evident. Another night at the trump family convention. The president , two of his children, and his wife all addressed the virtual gathering with the theme land of opportunity. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Tiffany trump, the president s youngest daughter, lashed out at the media and Silicon Valley for promoting what she called fabricated views. People must recognise that our thoughts, our opinions, and even the choice of who we are voting for may, and are, being manipulated, invisibly coerced by the media and tech giants. Breaking from a tradition that us secretaries of state stay above the political fray, americas top diplomat addressed the convention from jerusalem. This president has led bold initiatives in nearly every corner of the world. In china, hes pulled back the curtain on the predatory aggression of the Chinese Communist party. The president has held china accountable for covering up the china virus and allowing it to spread death and economic destruction in america and around the world. Democrats have already launched an investigation into whether mike pompeo broke the law by delivering a political speech during a Diplomatic Mission to the middle east. The star of the night was melania trump, stepping out from the white house to deliver a live speech from the rose garden another unconventional setting and with an audience. She said shed been reflecting on the racial unrest seen around america. Id like to call on the citizens of this country to take a moment, pause, and look at things from all perspectives. I urge people to come together in a civil manner, so we can work and live up to our standard american ideals. I also ask people to stop the violence and looting being done in the name ofjustice, and never make assumptions based on the colour of a persons skin. The first lady said she was proud of her husbands achievements in office, acknowledging that hes not a traditional politician. We all know donald trump makes no secrets about how he feels about things. Total honesty is what we, as citizens, deserve from our president. Whether you like it or not, you always know what hes thinking, and that is because hes an authentic person, who loves this country and its people and wants to continue to make it better. A softer approach to selling donald trump for another term in the white house. Peter bowes, bbc news, los angeles. The time is 1 16. Our top story this lunchtime two people are killed in wisconsin, during another night of protests about the Police Shooting of an unarmed black man. And still to come as the first English Schools return in leicester well be with students as they return to the classroom. And coming up on bbc news andy murray is beaten by milos raonic in new york, but hell be back at flushing meadows next week for the us open. Working from home became the norm for millions of people around the country during the coronavirus lockdown. Now, as restrictions are eased and children return to school, the government is encouraging people to get back to their workplaces. But Research Carried out by the bbc shows that of 50 of the uks largest companies, from banks to retailers, not one is planning to have all its staff in the Office Full Time in the nearfuture. Our correspondent Nina Warhurst has been to see how one business is adapting to a new way of working. Meet the wrights. Lucy works in marketing. Dave is an account manager. Theres gus. And for hamish, well, posing for us isnt exactly his top priority. And since the end of march, the wrights have been working from home. Its been a mixed bag. It was a bit of a challenge initially, wasnt it . Yeah, very much. Um, you know, we had to very quickly kind of work out when we were working and when we were parents. Lucy and dave work for a business called moneypenny, which handles calls and live chats for other companies. Around a third of their 700 staff are back and the boss says more working from home means the business can grow without needing more physical space. As business leaders, we need to find the opportunity, particularly in these big periods of change. So, for us, it allows us to grow faster. Weve just recruited 150 people actually now until the end of october, so it allows us to bring more people into the business and actually to be able to expand and scale, so that weve got the space moving forwards to be able to do that. The bbc spoke with 50 of the uks biggest employers and not one of them said they plan to bring all of their staff back any time soon. In fact, almost half of them said they dont have any immediate plans to bring anyone back. For the businesses which survive, some employees will thrive, but alongside the work from home winners, there will inevitably be losers. What weve seen is that those who are in the highest skill brackets can work effectively with technology, technology complements them, they become more productive and they win. They can then earn higher wages. Those at the bottom end of the skills distribution have a very different experience and often they are replaced by automation and they find it difficult to retain theirjobs. So, there is a real challenge here for inequality as we move into the future. There you go. Thank you. Ideally, i think wed all like to have a mix of both. Thats the ideal for everyone, isnt it . Ifeel like ive learned how to be a better mummy and separate things a bit more. Do you think, because of lockdown, that balance will be better . Being able to say this is work and this isnt i think weve all got a lot better at that. You know, yes, this is really important. But so are these guys. But, yeah. Yeah. Thats finished now. Right now, im just mummy and thats that. Whats daddy doing . Work. Nina warhurst, bbc news. Wheres he doing a bit of work . Downstairs. Most pupils in england go back to school next week. But in leicester, the term generally starts a little earlier, and about 20 schools in the city reopened this morning. Our correspondent geeta pendse has been to one Primary School to see what measures have been put in place. The front entrance may look familiar, but theres a lot thats changed at kibworth Primary School. Im really sorry, lots of boxes everywhere. Head gilly has been at the helm of a mass operation to get the school ready to welcome back all 600 students. All the children are going to have all their own equipment now. So, weve bought all the children their own pencil case. Theyve all got their own place to sit. Could you sanitise your hands on the way, please . Children will be in social bubbles of 30, spending most of their time in one classroom, and then forming a super bubble with their year group during play time. Weve just had these put in, just this last week. So all the year groups have outdoor sinks, as well, and they all have automatic hand sanitising. The classes have all been rearranged, so students face forward and sit side by side. Teachers are advised to keep a 1. 5m distance. Obviously you can see, with the tables out, it is going to be very different and children will need to learn how to sit at the table. But i think with the right modelling and explaining to the children, hopefully, in time, you know, theyll just adapt to it. We have had to make a lot of changes. Weve had to pretty much base all our pe outside now. Weve had to completely amend all of the curriculum golf, tennis and then bringing in different types of football that involve not picking the ball up and using their hands. In the kitchen, staff have created a menu with two lunch options one hot and one cold. It all goes into a bag and the hot food goes in the box. And then somebody comes in the bubble and takes the food to the classroom. Big changes here. So, how do parents feel . I think they need it. Theyve been missing their friends and definitely need to have the routine of school. I guess we all feel a bit apprehensive from time to time. But i feel confident that the schools taken precautions and that its going to be as safe as possible. If a child does show symptoms of covid 19, what will you do . Well, thats the purpose of the social bubbles, is to limit the amount of people that you have contact with, and, of course, the contact that you do have so has the child had face to face contact with other children . But the overriding thing, and i think its what makes me far less anxious, is that Public Health england will advise us exactly what we should be doing. Theres a lot of planning in place. All that the school needs now are the students. Geeta has also been to a secondary school in the area she was there as students returned to the classroom this morning. Around 300 students have arrived here at Manor High School in oadby. If you have a look through here, one of the classes are in session. This is the year 7 class. At the moment, they have year 7 and year 11 in the school and from tomorrow, the whole of the school will arrive and lots of changes here. So, all along the school there is a one way system in place. Theyve actually got this plan dotted around the school, so students know whats going on. As you enter a new space, weve got this hand sanitising station and lots of bins to throw tissues in for the students. There are so many changes here, but as its the second day here for students, let see how theyre feeling. Weve got niamh over here, in year11. Niamh, what was your first day back like . It was really well planned out. I knew exactly where i needed to be and know what i was doing, so it really helped with the nerves. And what were you worried about . Well, because im doing my gcses, i was scared that i was going to be behind, but the teachers have prepared resources for us, so they know how to catch us up. Ok, thank you very much, niamh. So, as i mentioned, year 7 are also back. Of course, its their first time in the school. Ive got khalid here who began yesterday. Khalid, whats it been like coming to the school with all the changes . Its been quite, like, frightening because youve got all the one way system and then. But youve got hand sanitising sections, so you can hand sanitise your hands and the one way systems also reduced contact, so i dont feel like i have to have a mask and stuff, and ive really settled in nicely to this school. Ok, well, thank you so much, khaalid. Lets speak to the headteacher here, liam powell. Lima, obviously thats nice to hear, that khaalid feels like hes settling in but you have changed a lot, havent you . Yeah, weve changed a lot of things. Weve been really busy over the summer, getting ready, since the announcements were first made injuly. Weve got a one way system, weve got changes to our uniform policy, were encouraging people to wash their uniform every night. Weve got sanitisers everywhere but the biggest change of all is weve gone to a 50 day lesson plan. I wanted to ask you about Face Coverings because, as we know, the guidelines have changed. If youre a school in a localised lockdown area now, young people are told that they have to wear masks in communal areas from september. What do you make of that . It sounds very sensible and i welcome the announcements today. I think that its a really good idea. This school itself was in lockdown a couple of weeks ago and weve come out of it, so those policy changes would have affected us but the way the policy is now, it is up to the discretion of the headteacher to make the decisions that are right for their setting. So our masks are optional, as things stand. Ok, thank you so much. Liam powell there, the headteacher. As i mentioned, the whole of the school will be back tomorrow and then that will really test all the Safety Measures that they have in place here. Geeta pendse their reporting. The gap in attainment between poorer and wealthier pupils in england is widening, according to new research. A study which was carried out before the coronavirus pandemic by the education policy instute found that disadvantaged pupils are, on average, 18 months of learning behind their peers by the time they finish their gcses. Our education correspondent danjohnson is with me. Really striking that this was done before coronavirus might get absolutely, these are figures from last year, before the lockdown and disruption to learning and every expectation is that will have only made the situation worse. We had more than a decade of progress on this but this Research Claims that stopped last year and it started going backwards. If you remember, this was a government elected on a promise to level up, to give equal opportunities for children right across the country. The researchers are highlighting the proportion of children in poverty for the reason for this slide. Gcse pupils, the poorest ones are 18 months behind their counterparts. That measure had been improving but has stalled and when you look at Primary School children, there it is a smaller gap but it started going in the wrong direction, getting biggeragain. There is an element of regional disparity in this as well, some of the places with the biggest gaps, blackpool, knowsley, plymouth. Some of the smaller gaps are in london boroughs. The department for education said this is why it is so important every child gets back in the classroom in the next week or so, so they can start addressing these issues. Even though these figures predate the pandemic, its highlighting the £1 billion of covid catch up funding as part of its response to these issues to make sure that no children do lose out in the future. 0k, thank you. Dan johnson, our education correspondent. At the height of the pandemic, we were strictly limited in where we could go and what we could do. But for many people, that helped them discover new places and find hidden gems close to where they live. Our correspondentjohn maguire has been to see some of the wonders that people have discovered on their doorsteps. You suddenly turn the corner and you see this. The statues and at the time of year that we came, there was beautiful meadow flowers all the way around. It was absolutely lovely. It was beautiful. We arrived and there were just daisies everywhere and with the statues peeking out. This is called the regiment of trees, on parade within one of the woodland trusts First World War centenary woods. Its just a stones throw from the famous epsom racecourse in surrey, but many local people dont know its here. Theres no one here, i dont think many people know about it but i definitely found it just because i had a more time on my hands over lockdown. So ijust wanted to explore a bit more of my local area and walked and walked and walked and eventually found it. If it wasnt for lockdown, i probably wouldnt have come because i dont really like walking that much. Weve done a lot of walking in lockdown weve never been able to get here and after seeing it on instagram, i was like, oh, we have to go. The sculptures depict an inspection parade of 20,000 men at a nearby base in 1915. There just wasnt enough equipment to go round. So the men that are in the front row were fully equipped with uniforms and the full equipment and rifles, and then as the rows go back, they get less and less equipment and uniform and then the chaps at the back are standing there in their civilian dress. Im going to share Painshill Park with you. This is a wonderful location. Within an hour of london, so youve got pretty big populations just around in the south east of england. Designed in the 18th century by charles hamilton, he wanted to create what he called Living Paintings and it really is absolutely magnificent. Visitors have been able to return here since the beginning of the easing of lockdown. Priest hill was once overgrown and abandoned, but now its 86 acres have been reclaimed for nature and for nature lovers. But ive noticed there have been a lot more people coming out with their families or using the reserve as a green gym because everyones gym has been shut down and itsjust been really nice to see families connecting with each other and connecting with nature at the same time. Ive been able to stop and chat to bird watchers and see what theyre looking at and everyone actually became a bird watcher, so its just been a magical place to be. Its often been hard to find the positives in this pandemic but reconnecting with our natural environment, especially if its right on our doorstep, has been vital in so many ways. John maguire, bbc news, surrey. Time for a look at the weather
