Country and is causing tremendous anger and division and pain. Also in the programme the State Capitols across america are on high alert, the fbi is warning there are further armed protests to come. Well speak to a state representative in michigan where theyve lived with these threats for months. And what is the financial cost to donald trump of last weeks riot . There are signs the banks and his biggest sponsors are turning away. Hello, im katty kay in washington. Christian fraser is in london. The effort to hold those responsible for last weeks capitol riots is playing out on two fronts theres the political, with democrats pushing forward on impeachment. More on that in a few minutes. And then theres the criminal. And Law Enforcement is not holding back. In the last hour, the acting us attorney for the District Of Columbia said officials are looking at significant sedition and conspiracy charges for those involved. Michael sherwin says the capitol is a crime scene and predicts there could be hundreds of charges. The range of criminal conduct is really, again, unmatched in any type of scenario that weve seen we are looking at everything from simple trespass to theft of mail to theft of digital devices within the capital to assault and local officers, both inside and outside the capitol to the theft of potential National Security or defence information to felony murder. Before that press conference, the Washington Post was reporting that its seen an internal fbi memo that was filed tuesday the day before the violence. It says protestors were plotting war on the capitol. The memo points to an internet thread which talked of breaking down the doors of congress, advocating violence and ends with the quote we get our president , or we die. That memo contradicts a statement from the head of the Fbis Washington Field Office on friday that there was no prior warnings of the attack. Across america, State Capitols in all 50 states are on high alert, after the fbi warned of further armed protests in the days ahead. The Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer called today for those involved in the riot to be placed on the no fly list. In a moment, well talk to a Democratic State senator from michigan but first lets speak to Elizabeth Neumann who was a former chief of staff for the Trump Administration at the department of Homeland Security. I was listening to that press conference from the department of justice and the fbi and it was pretty stunning. They are basically saying weve never seen this kind of investigation before. There is a huge amount of evidence they are going through and a long list of charges as we heard there that they are going to carry out. They have been accused of acting too slowly in the early days after the attack on capitol hill. Do you think they are now going to launch a massive investigation and carry out charges in light of the attack . Iam i am heartened by what we heard today about the fact they put out a bulletin yesterday alerting the country that this threat continues. Those are the types of things that im used to seeing when we have an incident. Im still puzzled how we went so long without having even a press c0 nfe re nce went so long without having even a press conference for anybody from anybody in the executive branch explaining what happened. The day of the incident, the only official that came out and did what you are used to seeing when we have incidents like this was the mayor of the District Of Columbia, so its a step in trying to get back on the right direction. There are serious questions that will need to be a nswered questions that will need to be answered once we get through this heightened threat period of how no warning was given for the january six attack. Its amazing, its nearly a week since the attack and this is the first time weve heard from officials and we didnt even hear from the head from officials and we didnt even hearfrom the head of from officials and we didnt even hear from the head of those organisations, they sent out deputies to talk to the press. They didnt answer during the press conference, the key question about why they didnt pick this up before and how this was allowed to happen. Do you think well get to those questions . Will we get a more thorough response to that . questions . Will we get a more thorough response to that . I think the investigation it needs to happen. Once we get through the heightened threat period, there are so heightened threat period, there are so many breakdowns on the other side and the protocols and the Standard Operating Procedures that have been developed since 9 11, there something for the National Response plan that literally lays out a playbook of how you would handle incident communication, something simple like coordinated phone calls within one hour of the incident and deciding who the spokesperson is and making sure there is a press call or press c0 nfe re nce making sure there is a press call or press conference set up within the next hour. None of those protocols we re next hour. None of those protocols were followed. You add to it that much more devastating issue of a com plete much more devastating issue of a complete security failure at the capitol. No warning. All of these we re capitol. No warning. All of these were post 9 11 reforms that were supposed to be fixed so for the sake of sending a signal to all our enemies, domestic and foreign, that we are going to protect ourselves, that we do actually have the strongest security in the world, we need to discover what went wrong and make sure we correct it. Full stop in mind of the continued threat and breakdown of protocols, what did you make yesterday of chad wolfe, the acting secretary of Homeland Security walking away from the job on the eve of the fight . Hes in charge of the secret sentence that will leave during the inauguration. Who is manning the tiller . Its my understanding that the issue there was one of legality associated with his tenure so its going to be. It sounds like it really wasnt his decision to walk away as much as his nomination was no legally allowed to continue operating as acting secretary saw more than anything its just yet another example of the chaos of the Trump Administration. Now we have the sixth secretary in four years. Pete gaynor is a good man, he is qualified to be acting secretary, so im sure he will carry out his duties well but its more challenges for the men and women at the department of Homeland Security who have already demonstrated that something went awry and i dont want to place blame here, its probably ata to place blame here, its probably at a leadership level, but something went awry and they were not able to perform their duties last week so this is not a good time to have more churn, a new administration can hopefully establish normalcy and people can go back to doing those protocols they know how to do. Very briefly, can i ask you, the acting department ofjustice said there will be felony cases tie to sedition. Explain what that means. Seditious conspiracy, my understanding that is not a charge thatis understanding that is not a charge that is brought up very often. I was pleased to hear they were willing to do that but the basic idea is that two or more people that have collaborated to undermine or overthrow the government so that is what happened, but it will be interesting who they choose to target for that and how many there where. Will they include those that might have incited the violence at the president s rally before they stormed the capitol . Or are they targeting some of the very militant looking people that when they went m, looking people that when they went in, they clearly knew what they were doing, they were clearly prepared and put up a pretty good fight. Im continuing to watch and see how they are going to use that but im glad they are calling it out and they are not being fearful of reprisal from trump perhaps. This is the right thing we need to put a clear label on this, this was terrorism, this was sedition, this was an insurrection, so nobody of goodwill happens to accidentally show up at a protest next week for inauguration. If you are going to one of the supposed protests, you need to realise that you are associating yourself with people that want to commit sedition and acts of terrorism. Werejoined by sylvia santana. She is a Democratic State senator from michigan who this week began wearing a bullet proof vest to work. We already see the pictures in washington, 15,000 National Guard troops will be on standby for the inauguration. We got seven foot non scalable fences around federal buildings, but the concern i detect is for state capitals and four states that right now during this covid crisis are under resourced to deal with it. Whats the situation like in michigan . I would have to say this situation did not start overnight. Obviously back in april, we had several individuals, home grown terrorists within a state capitals with ar15s uber intimidating legislators if they did the will of the people. If that was a precursor to what we saw in our us estate State Capitol, those threats are concerning for all of us here in michigan as well so im definitely giving a lot of support to our Michigan State police in addition to our State Capitol police who are taking these threats seriously. Is it true you came to work this week in a kevlar vest . do have it located under my desk on the Senate Chamber flaws and i will be putting that on but as we know from the us State Capitol situation, there were bombs within the building so we there were bombs within the building so we have to be on high alert and aware of whats going on. I should not have conversations with my collea g u es not have conversations with my colleagues about how we should be protecting ourselves by putting on bullet proof protecting ourselves by putting on bullet proof vests. Protecting ourselves by putting on bullet proof vests. We should essentially be doing the work of the people we represent across michigan. What do you make about the difference of the treatment with black lives matter protesters in michigan last summer and the mob that attacked the capital last week . I think definitely you saw a level of security that was evident with black lives matter, with the peaceful protests, but as we seen this past week with these Trump Supporters who came into the us capitol and stormed it, people whose lives have been lost, there was not the same level of security at that particular event, insurrection i will call it, that we saw this past week. We cant treat people differently across the board when it comes to protests but that was clearly not a protest, that was home grown terrorists who are looking to take over the us capitol. Thank you forjoining us, senator. The die is cast for President Trump to become the first us president to ever be impeached twice. Experts say its a matter of time. The democrats have been spent their day making the case that he is a danger to the nation, and must be removed from office. Republicans have hedged a bit. They say yes, joe biden won the presidency. But theyve failed to acknowledge that the vote was fair and legal. President trump decided the best course of action at least for today was to leave town. Hes been visiting the border wall, near alamo in texas. Earlier, he said his speech last week was totally acceptable. In texas, he again showed no remorse, returning to some familiar lines, and dismissing the threat of being removed via the 25th amendment. Free speech is under assault like never before. The 25th amendment is of zero risk to me, but will come back to hauntjoe biden and the biden administration. As the expression goes, be careful what you wish for. The impeachment hoax is a continuation of the greatest and most vicious witch in the history of oui most vicious witch in the history of our country and is causing tremendous anger and division and pain, fargreaterthan tremendous anger and division and pain, far greater than most people will ever understand. Were joined now by anita kumar, the White House Correspondent for politico. Between what President Trump said before he left for texas, that his speech was totally appropriate last week at that rally on wednesday before the riot at the capitol, and what he said there about the hoax and impeachment effort, how does what President Trump said today, the first time weve heard from him in public since the attack on the capitol, affects the political side of this . Well, its not unexpected what he said. Weve been hearing from inside the white house that he is upset at the blame that he is being sent his way. He doesnt understand being impeached for a second time and is equating this to the two other investigations he mentioned, hes calling it a hoax, the russian investigation, and also his first impeachment. I think the more he talks and doesnt take any responsibility, the more he is removed from other republicans. Ive heard from so many people that have supported him in 2016 and 2020, helped get him elected, worked for him, that have stood by him for four yea rs, him, that have stood by him for four years, that are done with him now, that feel like he has ruined those four years in all that he has accomplished by what has happened in the last week so i think you are going to see a greater divide in the republican party. What might inform how republicans think ahead of this vote tomorrow is the reporting weve had on the conversation that minority leader Kevin Mccarthy had with the president. Let me show you some transcripts from that conversation. The president was insistent that antifa was involved in the riot. Mccarthy said, its not antifa, its maga, i was there. Then they talked about the election, stopping the steel, and Kevin Mccarthy said, just stop it, its over. Interrupted him, infact. He said the election is over. You get the impression the president is still deluded about what happened on wednesday and doesnt accept it. Exactly right. That conversation you just alluded to is very telling. Kevin mccarthy has been one of President Trumps biggest supporters. They talk often. Hes a close confidant so the fact that he is pushing back, mccarthy is pushing back on what trump said, the fact that senator Lindsey Graham pushing back on what trump has said, is very telling. These are his closest allies on capitol hill, telling him just stop it. Its notjust what happened last week, its that many of them have been tired of hearing for two months President Trump saying that he still won the election, that he didnt lose, that he needs to fight it. They have said, you can go through those legal processes , said, you can go through those legal processes, go through the lawsuits and recounts, but once thats over, its time to move on. From what im hearing inside the white house for the last week, even after the protests, he hasnt moved on, he still continued to talk about the election and continuing to be very angry about it and wishes there was some way to turn that around so he hasnt taken that advice from Kevin Mccarthy or others to stop talking about this and stop pushing on this. Thank you very much. A lot of people will see hypocrisy on the part of the republicans. Who remembers 2012, the benghazi siege of the american compound and the excitement of the republicans, how animated they wear. They hold Hillary Clinton in front of congressional enquiries, wanted her fired, and now presented with similar evidence, a president who was borderline enthusiastic about the riot, a president who refused to send the National Guardian, who ignored the calls from congressional leaders who were pleading for him to intervene, they want to look the other way. No surprise today, Hillary Clinton is tweeting. Yeah, there is a realfeeling amongst democrats that republicans cannot talk about unity unless they are prepared to say unambiguously there was no fraud in the election, joe biden won the election, there is no question of a hoax and thats what democrats. They are certainly not hearing it from President Trump but they say they are not hearing it from enough republicans either. There is an exchange between congressmanjim there is an exchange between congressman jim jordan from the republicans and democrat on the rules committee. Lets have a quick listen to that because it gets to the ambivalence. No, we cant bring you that unfortunately butjim jordan said joe biden won, but the election was still. Its that but. That was the fuel on the flames of the attack at the capitol. Those repeated assertions that the election was fraudulent. Thats what caused all of this. For those watching on bbc world news, well be right back. The home secretary said the lockdown measures in england were clear and insisted they were working in the fight against the spread of coronavirus. Speaking at the governments press conference, she also reinforced the governments stay at home message. As of today, 2,431,648 people have been vaccinated across the united kingdom.
