To say thank you for all that canada has done, a good ally to ukraine, there are a lot of ukrainians living in canada at the moment so president zelensky theyre signing, i dont know what he is signing, perhaps we can find out later, but hes going to address politicians in the Canadian Parliament with Prime Minister trudeau taking him into the chamber now. Of course, today we heard from ukrainian officials saying that its forces have successfully hit the headquarters of russias black sea navalfleet successfully hit the headquarters of russias Black Sea Naval Fleet in crimea. Russia says that one serviceman is missing after the attack. The local governor warned residents in the city of sebastopol that another attack was possible and to urge the city centre and stay indoors. I think we can show some pictures posted on social media of plumes of smoke rising from the building that was attacked, we are just trying to find you those pictures and we will cross to them. Here is a map. Here we are, here are the plumes of smoke rising from the building. Ukraine has carried out several attacks on crimea this month, destroying a russian aired defence system and damaging as ship and submarine. Russia seized and annexed the peninsula from Ukraine Backin annexed the peninsula from ukraine back in 2014. I think we can hear from our correspondentjames from our correspondent James Waterhouse in from our correspondentJames Waterhouse in kyiv, we can hear a bit more about that attack. It seems like sadly figure on the verified footage that we are seeing, it appears that russia is not black sea naval headquarters in sevastopol has been directly hit. Now, if we go on what the moscow officials are saying, they blamed falling debris, but the images suggest that this is a direct hit. We dont know the further implications, in terms of who was in there, but this is a place where russia has really asserted its dominance. It is the Black Sea Fleet from which it has launched Missile Strikes across ukraine, it has blockaded ports, and this is a peninsula that russia annexed back in 2014, it is almost a cornerstone of russia, invasion and i think regardless of whether kyiv claims responsivity for this one, it did last week when it hit a with british supplies missiles are destroying a submarine and warship, it is clear ukraine is continuing with its strategy of trying to target sites in crimea, to both undermine russias occupation but also to support its continued counteroffensive further north by frustrating russian operations. James waterhouse there for us in kyiv. And as just mentioned, president zelensky is in canada and about to address the Canadian Parliament in the next half hour or so, we have got the images we can show you of when he arrived a few moments ago. Before he went to canada, he went to the us to visit President Biden and is part of that, President Biden and is part of that, President Biden and is part of that, President Biden announced a 325 million Military Aid Package for ukraine. We have a quick listen into what Prime Minister trudeau is saying. Well perhaps come back to it when we get a translation or when he starts speaking in english. Lets hear president zelensky. Hear president zelensky. Justin, thank ou hear president zelensky. Justin, thank you very hear president zelensky. Justin, thank you very much hear president zelensky. Justin, thank you very much for hear president zelensky. Justin, j thank you very much for hosting hear president zelensky. Justin, thank you very much for hosting us, me and my wife and my team. And thank you for this invitation, it is a privilege for us to be in canada, thank you for your support, you have been with us from just days of the first full scale war, from phone calls and real steps, and i say to you and your government and of course to all the canadians, i have a lot of warm words and thanks to say from ukraine to you, and your beautiful country, i know it has beautiful, i have no time to see it but i note that it is beautiful i think after the victory, it will become a victory, of course we will come, maybe with children. And i want to thank, in this tough period, the ukrainians, you helped us on the battlefield and with humanitarian aid which is crucial. But my words to all canadians. Thank you so much that you stayed with us, through our victory and it will be. Thank you so much. ~ , victory and it will be. Thank you so much. ~ , victory and it will be. Thank you so much. ~ ,. Victory and it will be. Thank you so much. ~ i. ,. , much. Thank you very much. Sorry, that sound much. Thank you very much. Sorry, that Sound Quality much. Thank you very much. Sorry, that Sound Quality wasnt much. Thank you very much. Sorry, that Sound Quality wasnt great, much. Thank you very much. Sorry, | that Sound Quality wasnt great, but we got the idea there, generally a message of gratitude to the canadian government and the people of canada about all of the help that they have given his country over the past year, very important, obviously, the amount of aid that has just been given. I wasjust mentioning amount of aid that has just been given. I was just mentioning that of course he visited the United States before canada and there was this pledge from President Biden of 325 million worth of military aid. And we arejust hearing million worth of military aid. And we are just hearing on the Reuters News Agency today that as part of that aid, joe biden apparently informed president zelensky that washington would be providing kyiv with the long range missiles, so president zelensky desperately wants a small number but this is apparently quoting three us officials and a congressional official, this is nbc news reporting it and what it is telling us about it, saying that they will be some long range missiles included in that package that President Biden announced because those are the weapons that buy their zelensky very clearly once, and as you will hear in the next interview, canada doesnt have them. I have been speaking to an International Relations expert about this visit, here is what she had to say. Canada has been deeply supportive of ukraine from the very beginning. Canada has the largest Ukrainian Population outside ukraine and russia. And so theres a good core, both of support and of core group, if you like, of ukrainians that have been deeply supportive all the way along. And zelensky is here to express his gratitude for that. Yeah, i think we have a graphic we can show how much in terms of the contributions that various countries give, how much where canada is on that scale. Just talking about in terms of what canada has given so far and what president zelensky is looking for, he wants those long range missiles, doesnt he . And i suppose thats not what canada is able to offer, is it . Thats right. Canadas ability to offer Military Support is limited in a sense of canadas own Military Power itself is relatively small. It doesnt have that kind of some of the higher tech, longer range Missile Systems that would be most useful to ukraine. That said, we have been contributing what we can from our stock, military stock. Its just not of that kind of Weapon System were hearing today about this strike on the black fleet in crimea. In terms of the significance of that, its quite. What do you make of that in terms of the significance . Its hard to tell at this stage in terms of actual losses. I guess theres theyve said theres one person missing. I think the main significance is the symbolism of being able to hit those that headquarters in crimea. As your correspondent indicated this past month, ukraine has been working hard at targeting crimea. It gives it a capacity to reach beyond the front lines that go along the contested area on the east and north in ukraine. And thats very important at being able to strike directly at russia and notjust be working on the front lines in the trenches, if you like. So the actual impact is hard to assess, but the symbolic impact is very high. And i suppose regardless of how it helps his actual military offensive, it probably helps his Charm Offensive a bit as well. This sort of request for four Arms Around The World in terms of saying, look, look, were nearly capable of doing this and speeding things along a bit. Exactly right. And i imagine the timing is no accident in that this is happening while hes well. While zelensky is making the rounds trying to shore up Political Support in countries like the us and canada. The ability to point to this kind of action will will help him considerably because it is that kind of long range system in addition to things like air defences that he really needs. And hes fighting against a sense, particularly in the us, but not just in the us, that the war has stalled and that theres not likely to be a breakthrough soon. Theres also winter is coming, isnt it, which as we know, really affects the fighting, doesnt it . And their capabilities . It does significantly affect that. And its not that far off. And one of the things that happened last winter was that it gave both sides, but russia seems to have been in a way more the beneficiary of the time to re shore, you know, resuscitate their troops, gather more defences, more weapons, and be ready for the next round. And if thats what were going to soon again, then again, that speaks to zelensky s need to make sure theres a pipeline of support, weapons, political, Military Resources in other forms, not just weapons that will enable them to use the winter to be ready for this spring in a new way. That was Drjane Bowles and from canadas Royal Military college. We are of course keeping an eye on presence rescues visit to canada, hes about to speak in parliament and the next hour or so so we will bring that when we get it. Something else we are keeping an eye on is that a senior senator, Robert Menendez and his wife have been indicted on corruption charges, this is a background to a statement we are expecting from prosecutors in new york, that is the backdrop there, that when people appear to talk about that we will bring it to you. These photos show bags filled with enough drugs to kill half a million people. Police had been tipped off after the stash after a one year old died of a suspected Drug Overdose last friday at the nursery. Three other children were admitted to hospital after being exposed to the powerful drug. The Nursery Owner and her tenant have been charged with running a drug operation resulting in death and face a lifetime in prison. We alleue and face a lifetime in prison. We allege that and face a lifetime in prison. Allege that the defendants poisoned for babies and killed one of them because they were running a drug operation from a daycare centre, a daycare centre. A place where children should be kept safe, not surrounded by a drug that could kill them in an instant. When Law Enforcement officers searched the daycare, they saw a large quantity of fentanyl. The investigation has left. Fred davies for Bribery Offences. The investigation has been run out of the Southern District of new york, the indictment alleges that between 2018 and 2022, Senator Menendez, the senior us senator from newjersey and the chairman of the Foreign Relations committee and his wife engaged in a corrupt relationship with others. The indictment alleges that through that relationship, the senator and his wife accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars of bribes, in exchange for Senator Menendez using his power and influence to protect and enrich those businessmen and to benefit the government of egypt. The indictment alleges that these people provided bribes in the form of cash, gold, mortgage payments, a low show or no showjob for Nadine Menendez, a Mercedes Benz, and other things of value for the senator and his wife. Now, constituent service is part of any legislator s job. Senator menendez is no different. And as we explain in the indictment, there are things that Senator Menendez says he can do for his constituents and things that he says he cannot do for his constituents. He put it all on his constituents. He put it all on his senate website. So, for instance, it says he cannot compel an agency to act in someones favour. It says he cannot influence matters involving a private business. It says he cannot get involved in criminal matters or cases, period. But we allege that behind the scenes, Senator Menendez was doing those things for certain people, the people who were bribing him and his wife. Let me say a little bit more about the Conduct Thatis little bit more about the conduct that is alleged in the indictment. The indictment alleges that Senator Menendez took several actions as part of this corrupt relationship. First, the indictment alleges that Senator Menendez uses his power and influence, including his Leadership Role on the senate Foreign Relations committee to benefit the government of egypt in various ways. Among other actions, Senator Menendez allegedly provided sensitive, nonpublic Us Government information to egyptian officials and otherwise took steps to secretly aid the government of egypt. We also allege that Senator Menendez improperly pressured a senior official at the Us Department of to protect a lucrative monopoly that the government of egypt have awarded to hannah. A lucrative monopoly that hannah. A lucrative monopoly that hannah then used to fund certain bribe payments. Second, the indictment says that he used to power and influence to disrupt a Criminal Investigation and prosecution undertaken by the new jersey attorney general s office,. Third, the indictment alleges that Senator Menendez used his power and influence to try to disrupt a federal prosecution in the district of newjersey in two ways, first, by seeking to instill a United States attorney who he thought could be influenced with respect to davies and second, by trying to influence that office to act favourably in davies upon case. And as we allege in indictment, the senator agreed to do these things and use his power in this way because hannah was paying bribes and because davies was paying bribes. Fortunately, the Public Officials he sought to influence did not bend to the pressure. That is a good thing. As part of this investigation, Special Agents for the fbi executed Search Warrants on the fbi executed Search Warrants on the residence and safe deposit boxes of Senator Menendez and Nadine Menendez in newjersey. When i got there, they discovered approximately 500,000 of cash stuffed into envelopes and closets. Some of the cash was stuffed in the senators jacket pockets. Some of the cash, some of the envelopes of cash, contained davies fingerprints and dna. That is not all. Agents also discovered a lot of gold. Gold that was provided by davies and hannah. Friday has turned into a sunshine and showers day, with a noticeably cool feel. Tonight is going to be a rather chilly one, but through the weekend it will turn warmer. Wind and rain arriving for many and the main driver of the weather over the weekend will be this swirl of cloud, which you can see on our earlier satellite picture. This is ex hurricane nigel. Its going to feed into this deep area of low pressure. Thats going to bring some pretty heavy rain across northern and western parts, some brisk winds, but with the winds coming up from the south temperatures will start to climb. For the time being, though, winds are coming down from the north, so thats why it feels quite cool out there. A mix of sunny spells and showers, although generally quite a lot of cloud across scotland this afternoon. Temperatures north to south 12 to 18 degrees. Through this evening and tonight, most of the showers will fade. We could just see this Band Of Cloud And Showery Rain Grazing the east coast, but elsewhere, under those clear skies, we will see a few mist and fog patches and it will turn into really quite a chilly night. Many spots down into single digits. It could well get down below freezing in parts of the highlands. That means, though, quite a lot of sunshine to start tomorrow morning, but we will see more high clouds streaming in from the west turning that Sunshine Hazy and then thicker cloud getting into northern ireland, west wales, the south west of england, with some rain later in the afternoon. The winds starting to pick up. Temperatures between 12 and 18 Degrees North to south. During saturday night, we will see this frontal system moving its way in. Its going to become very slow moving across the western side of the uk, so that means some quite heavy bursts of rain as we head through the day on sunday. Further south and east, actually parts of east anglia and the South East Of England likely to stay largely dry with some sunshine. With those southerly winds starting to develop, it will start to feel just a little bit warmer. However, those winds will really be strengthening, particularly around coasts and hills. In the west, we could see wind gusts of 50mph to 60mph and some very heavy rain through sunday evening, perhaps most especially across the western side of scotland, where there could be enough rain for some localised flooding and travel disruption. As we head into next week, it does look decidedly unsettled. Showers or longer spells of rain at times and it will often be pretty windy. This is bbc news, the headlines.
