Its warning that staff absences during the pandemic, coupled with disruption at ports, could hit food supply chains. The uk government said the Food Industry remains well prepared to make sure people have the food they need. But an increasing number of industries are asking to be near the front of the queue when it comes to vaccinating workers. Sainsburys boss Simon Roberts also called for early vaccinations for key workers last week. Joining me now is nick allen, chief executive, british meat processors association. Have you with us. Just explain why you think the industry need this . Lets make it clear, we are not calling for it ahead of National HealthService Workers or vulnerable people, and to some extent, represent the Meat Industry but i think is a call for the whole Food Industry of the supply chain to be prioritised and i think what we have seen over the last couple of weeks as, the new strain is particularly more virulent and disrupt with if it gets into particular areas or plants, we are seeing bread more quickly and when you think about it, after keeping the National HealthService Going in the hospital is going on the essential workers, the next most important thing is that everybody can get food, and we dont want to go back to that situation that we had at the beginning of the pandemic of nurses working at night and coming out and finding the shelves empty, so we are calling for this along with a lot of others. Do you think thatis lot of others. Do you think that is a realistic possibility, that shelves will be empty, no meat on them with yellow if you suddenly have an outbreak in a distribution warehouse, or Something Like that, yes, it can bring things toa that, yes, it can bring things to a halt. It is a reality, if it suddenly spreads rapidly through a key pinch point for the food supply chain. We have a very integrated supply chain in this industry so yes, it could be a real possibility, you know, if the wrong thing happened at the wrong time. Casting our minds back to the first wave just under a year ago now, meet processing plants we re ago now, meet processing plants were some of the places where outbreaks seemed to be focused quite early on. Are you hearing about particular pressures on Meat Processing plant this time around . Meat plants are a little bit more vulnerable because they are called places and the virus survives a little bit better and can thrive a little bit better in cold places but in fact despite the press, the meat sector did pretty well through the early stages of the last endemic, and we got thousands of plants across the country and only a handful of them really got closed down. There was some bad pr around what happened in germany and one or two plants in america, but we managed to avoid that on the whole, through good precautions. But just at the moment, we particularly have noticed with the new strain coming in, it does cause a lot more problems. Just very briefly, what is the impact so faron just very briefly, what is the impact so far on your industry from brexit . Because we are, what, ten days now since the transition period ended with yellow most of our members have just kept their toe in the water in the early days and i have to say they got them scalded, badly. The reality is, the system we have is not really fit for purpose, it was a lwa ys really fit for purpose, it was always going to be difficult and its not designed for a 20 47just in time and its not designed for a 20 47 just in time supply chain. It is designed for shipping containers of product around the world and its always going to be difficult with this system. 0k, nick, good to talk to you. Under normal circumstances las vegas would this week have succumbed to its annual tech takeover. Company bosses and celebrities would have vied for attention with robots and novelty consumer gadgets. But thanks to the pandemic, this year the giant ces tech expo has gone virtual. It starts today. The man responsible gary shapiro says it will still be a busy week, and told the bbcs tech desk editor, leo kelion, about some of the themes to watch out for. There is a tremendous amount on ig connectivity. Another one is ai, artificial intelligence, it has of course been increasingly important but it is also important but it is also important to solving so many other problems, it is making us safer, healthier, more efficient, and of robotics. Looking at your exhibitors this year, or big chinese names that have appeared at ces in the past are not taking part this year. What is the consequences of them breaking with ces . So many things have happened in the last year that i could not even identify any reason about why any individual company is not there and with china it is especially true. The western china relationship has clearly deteriorated and china is getting more aggressive politically and militarily stopping there are concerns there, obviously. The Trump Administration has taken a very aggressive approach on china. We have many large Chinese Companies still exhibiting. Ive heard that the Chinese Government is not financially supporting some of the smaller companies, they are not supporting them for Digital Events and they make their own decisions, but the companies we have are the Significant Companies like high sense and others, so were comfortable with where we are in terms of oui with where we are in terms of our expectations considering we are going and 180 degrees shift. Are going and 180 degrees shift. Hisense. From a little bit of digital to a purely digital event. Can your boss insist on you getting tested and vaccinated . As the roll out of Covid Vaccination begins worldwide, employers are considering the implications for their workplace. Many firms are likely to encourage employees to take up the vaccine, but requiring employees to be vaccinated will raises numerous workplace issues. Here to discuss them isjodie hill. Shes a solicitor and managing director at thrive law. Whats the law on this, can an employer say to you that you have two get a vaccination . Employer say to you that you have two get a vaccination7m is not lawful for employers to mandate vaccines. They can encourage or incentivise employees to have the vaccine but if they are looking to mandate its they are going to run into complications, whether thatis run into complications, whether that is criminal or breach of the human rights act, so it is really important that employers dont force employees but actually look at ways of incentivising them. Now, when we talk about incentivise a sin, that is going to be something in a contract or a policy to encourage employees. It is not then to necessarily punish them as a result of not taking the vaccine so it is a very fine line and obviously we are in uncharted territory at the moment so employers do need to tread very carefully if they are thinking about going down the throat quite i suppose and incentive depends on which perspective you are looking at it from, because if an employer says, 0k, everyone on the staff to get the vaccine, you are going to get a £100 bonus at the end of the year, that could be seen as those who dont want to ta ke be seen as those who dont want to take the vaccine or card for some reason, they might say well, that is punishing dont. Absolutely, and the other issue there in direct elimination because some people have a legitimate reason for refusing the vaccine such as religious reasons, they might be pregnant or wanting to have a baby, they might be an ethical big and so there is not of reasons that may amount to discrimination if you incentivise in a way that places those individuals at a detriment so theres lots of things to think about here, and actually, it is not simply a one policy fits all workplace issue, you should be assessing every individual and why they are refusing if they are refusing and not making it very but actually requesting. And linked to all this, can an employer make employees take a covid 19 test as a condition of going into work . I think is a little bit more clear cut and that actually, not an invasive process , that actually, not an invasive process, so i do think that employers can mandate that, if they are going to and obviously not because the individual has the terms, then they should be making payment for that to support the employee, especially when they are mandating it as a route by ament for the employee to come to the workplace and the employee is ready and fit to come to work quite 0k, thank you very much. Now to the latest in the us china tensions, because one of President Trumps final executive orders comes into effect later today, which bans americans from owning shares in Chinese Companies that the white house alleges are linked to chinas military. Mariko 0i is following the story from our Asia Business hub. What could the implications of this be, then . It is quite significant because even though the executive order was announced back in november, ahead of it taking effect later today there have been several announcements. 0ne today there have been several announcements. One of which is the New York Stock Exchange delisting three Chinese Telecom companies, so they are china mobile, China Telecom as well as china unicom, and trading in the securities will be suspended later today. Msci also delisted those three companies. These moves will limit the amount of capital these companies will attract, though it is not a huge amount compared to what they are attracting in asia, so the move you can argue is rather symbolic but if for example ali barber or 10cent were to be targeted the impact would be much bigger. 0f targeted the impact would be much bigger. Of course President Trump has been seeking to cement his hard line on china in the final weeks of his presidency, so tiktok, huawei, smic have all been just to namea huawei, smic have all been just to name a few and last week he signed another executive order banning transactions with eight chinese apps including alipay as well as we chat pay, but new rules were introduced which would allow Chinese Companies to sue for compensation if their interests are damaged by application of foreign laws. They didnt mention the United States but it is very clear that they are talking about these tensions between the two countries. President elect joe biden has also said he would be tough on china so we will see if the tension continue between the two. All right, thank you very much. Lets get some of the days other news. Tesla is reportedly looking for a design director in china to come up with electric cars, tailored to chinese consumers. The company has been vying for a bigger market share in china. What goes up must come down Cryprocurrency Bitcoin lost 12 off its value today after Massive Gains last week. Lets talk to russ mould, investment director at aj bell. It isa it is a volatile asset, isnt it, bitcoin . And it has proved itself be so once again. Yeah, itself be so once again. Yeah, it has. If you look at the price chart it has basically gone up in a Straight Line over the last year. Had we been sat here 12 months ago it was trading at around 7,000, it reached 42,000 last week, so i suppose there would be the temptation for some people to think, we had an absolutely fantastic run here, this thing isnt going to plateau, it is either going to keep on going or perhaps suffer a little bit ofa or perhaps suffer a little bit of a debt, weve seen depth before so maybe one or two people just decided to lock in some profit. And then looking at the markets more generally, obviously monday morning so, we had the asian markets open for the start of the trading week. What sort of a tone are they coming week . I guess and some ways markets are all digesting the political news in america after the chaos there last week lpi have had lots of friends asking me why the Financial Market are taking that quite so calmly. I guess one reason why is that we will get the inauguration ceremony on the 20th of january, so inauguration ceremony on the 20th ofjanuary, so it inauguration ceremony on the 20th of january, so it hasnt been the smoothest of transitions there still will be once copy we have still got the vaccination programmes cranking up vaccination programmes cranking up around the world which Financial Markets are using as a reason the current bad news on the pandemic, and we also have president elect biden on friday talking about another stimulus programme, saying that the 900 billion in america that was approved in december is just the start and that an even get programme is going to be coming up the if you Financial Markets, one thing they love is cheap or free money and there might be more of that sloshing around shortly upright the equities markets, the Company Shares into is that the Company Shares into is that the drug and the dollar . Yeah, that dollar has been very weak, it has been trading at nearly a three year low, against a basket of International Current these, the dollar is trying to hold onto a level of around 90 but if the Us Government is going to keep on running huge and bigger deficit, Us Federal Reserve is going to keep on running quantitative easing asset buying programmes, there are going to be a heck of a lot more dollars around and if you think about it, if something increases and supply a lot, the price doesnt go up . 0k, increases and supply a lot, the price doesnt go up . Ok, thanks very much they are. Stay with us on bbc news, still to come how is the global Film Industry coping in the pandemic . Now to india, because the Northern State of haryana, where many cars are produced, has made it mandatory for private companies to hire local residents. But as Arunoday Mukharji explains, firms arent happy. Indias water industry makes up 7 of the countrys gdp and it employs over 35 Million People. And the state of haryana is a dominant player in the industry. It is home to heavyweights like suzuki india, honda motors. But a new state law threatens that role. The law threatens that role. The law requires 75 of private sector employees earning less than 700 a month to be from that state. Local unions claim 60 80 of workers in the private sector come from outside. Though official data remains unavailable. Indian carmakers say new mandates will affect the industrys competitiveness. Such policies do not bode well for the automotive value chains of industries that are of liberal excellence. You have the main, it is very cutthroat competition these days. This man disagrees. Born and raised in haryana, he has been working asa in haryana, he has been working as a mechanic with one of indias leading carmakers for nearly two decades. Translation there is no doubt of Skilled Labour here. Even closing the new law that allows companies from bringing skill in from outside should be scrapped. Not just in from outside should be scrapped. Notjust arianna, haryana, similar places have brought these in and other states have hindered they wa nted states have hindered they wanted to do it as well. The challenge has been how to implement these laws on the ground effectively. Travelling freely and finding a job anywhere in the country, troubles on t
