And a virus besides ebola that is being watched in the United States. This virusent says has sickened at least 500 people in 42 states. Almost all have been children. We will look at all of this and more over the hour. Lets get headlines from shelby holliday. The. S. Stocks rallied on u. S. Jobs report. The dow gained more than 200 points. 1 ,s p 500 rose more than which was its best gain in a loss two months. , eddie luhanskay chance to speak with the former aboutd coceo at pimco the departure of bill gross from the firm. I was very surprised. They weresurprised able to draw on a very deep bench of talented people who have established track records, industry awards, and who have been part of the process managing 80 of the assets. Was a surprise, but what was not a surprise was the incredible bench and a very strong team led by dan iversen. I know these people. They are superb. Dan is superb as a leader. The funds saw investors remove 23. 5 billion in september. Those are some of the top headlines. Back to you. Late turmoil and headlines from hong kong as the protest continue. Mia saini has been following the details. Tell us what has been going on. The past halfhour, the Hong Kong Police a senior a pressendent gave briefing addressing the earlier attack of a group of 50 middleaged men who attacked protesters. The superintendent said he did not condone any triad action and in fact 19 arrested and eight are suspected of triad backgrounds. To put this in perspective, it known as peninsula kowloon and is known to be more residential, full of locals and there is a presence of these triads, these gangsters that are known in hong kong. From our understanding, there was a group of them that attacked some of these peaceful protesters, some of these attacks then spread to other areas. At the time it was unclear who was responsible. There was a suspicion they were probeijing demonstrators. Now we understand perhaps the triad was involved. The police do not condone this behavior. What we know is the student ontesters put a statement the Facebook Page saying they will not continue any of these talks with senior members of the until the the deputy, trust has been restored with the police and protesters. That is the latest as we know it. Does this indicate the police and the authorities cant maintain public order . You could perhaps make that conclusion. From what i have been hearing, it is clear since the past two days, since the 28th, which is when the tear gas was used, the police have been given orders to take a step back and not be to too forceful. O be again, take a look at the footage. Is a time whens the police had to get involved because they wanted to maintain peace. I cant opine whether they are doing the right thing, but from what im hearing since the teargas incident, they have taken the right steps to create a harmonious environment. It is a challenge because of the ofbers, the sheer amount people. There are more protesters than police. These triadsu have involved, it can get a little violent. Guns are not allowed. You cannot carry a concealed weapon. There are groups of people within some of the gangster communities that do. It is interesting to see how this is going to unfold. I spoke to an analyst who said this is going to get worse before it better. Thank you very much, mia saini. Stock prices surging after the quarterartment reported million jobs were added in september. The Unemployment Rate fell to 5. 9 . Lets get details from john herman, the director of strategy also joining and us from los angeles, gary, the chief executive of the largest Talent Management firm in the world. John herman, youve got the report. What did you think . I was impressed. We had some good indicators coming into the report that was pointing to a decent gain in revision of the last month. And the numbers were very good. Broadbased job gains. We have the workweek back to the previous cycles five. The retention rate for workers for this month of september, it was the third best of any september in 30 years. Remarkable. We have seen ok wage growth. Takehome pay is improving and we are growing faster than inflation. A positive signal. We are thinking the Unemployment Rate will come down by the end of the year. And about 5. 3 by the middle of next year. 5. 3. Finished around 4. 8. That is remarkable. Does your experience and jives with what he is describing . It does. It is about time. It is incredible we are five years into a recovery. It has been a nike swoosh. Troubling aspect is the Participation Rate in the labor force is low. Statistically, since world war ii, recoveries have lasted five years. We are at the average of all cycles. I think it is healthy. It is really good news. You mentioned revisions. , and we hadntioned an disappointing outcome to august. Often times what you find in the month of august, every month seems to have its own quirks. About, cann issue they cant a large school districts. Sometimes the large do not give the data in on time. They estimate the larger schools it does not quite work. This was in sync with that kind of thing. In general, we have to say to ourselves, we have a very balanced recovery. Gdp is improving. , we would like to see better labor force participation. We have structural issues in the economy that may prevent that the rest of the decade. A gary, what do you see in terms of specific industries that are demonstrating strength . We mentioned health care. L, that is going to be 20 of the economy in a few years. Health care is number one. Life science, biotech is a close second. Technology, energy, those are the fields. And the Common Thread among ceos is there is a spike for growth, like myself, and youre looking for people that can innovate and drive the top line. Go ahead. Here is an interesting sidebar. Just he for the show i was meeting with the japanese client, before the show i was meeting with a japanese client. I showed him the u. S. Population demographics and i showed him my outlook for the next 15 to 18 years. He said this is better than japan. I said i know. Belgium, fit into japan. Portugal, greece, holland. Their yield kurds will lay on top of the japanese yield curve. We do not fit into bed. Our dynamics are different. Visa program, the sky is the limit. We can take off. We would be very happy. Even without that, our demographics do not fit that. So what is unusual, we saw mario on thursday downgrading the prospects for europe and so on. It fits with the demographic structure. The u. S. , i mean, we are going in the opposite way of what europe is going right now. You, youlast point to combine this with three dollar a gallon gasoline, what does that tell you about 2015 . Well, i still believe ceos are going to be cautious. There is still a theme of trying to do more with less. That is not going to go away. The consumer has not quite come back. Ofre is still a amount deleveraging. Listen, i am very optimistic. The other thing, the one thing that is contrary to what john was suggesting. With the baby boomers, we have seen people are definitely working longer. There is a number of reasons for that. That does restrict the growth at the bottom. So for kids out of college, like mine, it is still very difficult. The top is blocked. They might have to compete with their grandparents. Thank you very much. Fromecutive of korn ferry los angeles and john herrmann. Theng up on taking stock, facts about a cyber attack. Information from jpmorgan about the number of households hit i a hack into the bank system. This is taking stock on bloomberg. Onthis is taking stock bloomberg. I am pimm fox. Eric schneiderman is investigating Standard Poors. Why . Keri geiger. T from lets start with the investigation. What is the ag doing . They are looking to see if s p bent the rules to get deals. S to rate the six thisu know, these deals, type of business, they can get paid millions of dollars to do these deals. Standard poors, a lot of underes too, have been scrutiny. This is one of several investigations. How did you learn about this . We reported this confidentially through a number of sources and reported it out on bloomberg news. The reason i ask, it is now 2014. , cm bs,alized mortgage what is the thing they are looking for . Collateralized mortgage securities. They are back. Is there any reason why this could not have been done sooner . It is kind of a long time after the fact. It is. These deals are 2011 deals. It is an ongoing investigation. You have to remember the sec is looking into a number of these deals done by Standard Poors and the department of justice filed a 5 billion lawsuit on the same matter. I believe it was last year. Why does it take these organizations so long to do something . The longer the cases go on, the people that were actually in the places that made those decisions move on. There is no personal culpability. It is some kind of fine. That is a great question. The statueissues are limitations. We saw with mortgages, with the banks, a lot of those ran out. The department of justice had to unearth a new tool which had a much longer that is where we got those bank settlements. If the statute of limitations is running out, were probably going to see a conclusion to these investigations relatively quickly. The goal would to make sure you try to make whatever settlement you might be able to in this case we dont know what is going to happen. Or do you fight it . It depends. Typically Large Organizations will settle with Law Enforcement agencies such as the ags office. They will also settle with the department of justice. We do have instances where banks have actually opted to go to court on this and corporations have opted to go to court. So it does happen. Has Eric Schneiderman giving you a call . I have not spoken to them today. Can you stick around for a little bit longer . We will have more with keri geiger. Im also going to talk about jpmorgan getting hit by a cyber attack. Remember that was during the summer, in july. Now we know exactly how many people accounts they actually lost. That is next. It is described as one of the largest cyberattacks ever. Chase. Get is jpmorgan hackers were able to steal data on 76 million households. How did this happen . How can it be prevented in the future . Joining me is michael kaiser, the executive director of the National Cyber security alliance. Paul kedrosky. And with me in new york, keri geiger. Tell us what exactly happened. Experienced a very serious a cyber hack earlier this summer. They were disclosed to the general public that 76 million households, customer data, was compromised. What that means is the bank is basically telling us that logins, passwords, and sensitive customer information was not compromised. However, if you had a Private Banking account, a credit card or a mortgage, the type of customer you were is the type of information the hackers got a hold of. Is this information a potential threat to the people s haveames and id been taken . Absolutely. One of the canards in all of this, it is only a problem if you get a hold of words or what have you. What tends to happen is people collect the information and then turn around and do phishing attacks, emails like they look like they came from jpmorgan or even phone calls. It will have information about usa cast him her and ask you over the phone to disclose even more information to them. Attacks are what to watch out for, at least based on what we know in terms of the information they have. To have to worry about communications from our Financial Institutions just as we were concerned about communication from Central Banks in africa asking us to deposit money . , as paul said, we are going to see the social engineers come in after. We dont really know what the attackers were looking for in this attack. Once the information is out there, it can be used. It can be put together with other information. There will be attempts to reach these customers and encourage them to look at their Bank Accounts or to log on to something they should not log on to and share information they shouldnt. Without , elan along with other banks, they spend money and time, like 250 million a year. They take this seriously. Be that hard on these kinds of institutions . This is the modern world. Hopefully they have a response and they will continue to fight. That is exactly the question were trying to get the bottom up. Our banks is pending enough to fortify against themselves against hackers that can get into anywhere, no matter how much money you spend . Thankswe just now seeing reactively spending money because they did not build up and fortify the system enough . Figure that out. Wall street is trying to figure out where they are right now. Kedrosky, the individuals responsible for a cyber attack investigations include the secret service. Do we have the capability to find out who these people are that are doing this, go after them, and arrest them . Sometimes. They are very good at covering their tracks. Typically there are proxies that can be used to disguise where you came from and when you get a lot of the things you did. It can be difficult to go backwards. This attack had some unusual characteristics. It seems as if they were able to obtain administrative privileges on many of the computers. Yet they did not use them in terms of information. And it looks like they were able to spend a long time without an obvious immediate profit motive. Some are suggesting this is a statesponsored attack, which is an entertaining hypothesis. Michael, you heard Paul Kedrosky reference statesponsored attacks. Do you have a response to that . I do. It could be a statesponsored attack. It is National CyberSecurity Awareness month which raises the issue for all of us to protect these networks. We have a lot of vital information. When you look at a large bank that has millions of customers, it puts everybody at risk. We share this responsibility. It is hard to find attribution, exactly who was doing it and why. We do not know. Are they trying to make money . What is a tased date sponsored attack. Were they just a group of nonaligned hackers who were waiting to make some kind of a statement about something they did not like that was going on . Thank you all very much. Kedrosky, finance reporter keri geiger. This is taking stock. This is taking stock for friday, october 3, 2014. Im pimm fox. While the ebola virus is making headlines as cross the globe, another more widespread virus is causing concerns for Health Officials here in the United States. It is called etrovirus 68 and more than 500 people in 42 states have already been ickened. Joining me from california is a doctor. Shes the service chief of pediatric Infectious Diseases at a Childrens Hospital at stanford. Thank you very much for being with us. Describe for people that may t be familiar with e. V. Evd68, what is it . It is one of a very large family of very common viruses. There are over 120 of these viruses, primarily affecting children. And they cause common illnesses of childhood. There are no treatments available for these and they generally resolve on their own. And it appears that evd68 has been causing rarely causing severe illness in children with underlying respiratory conditions such as asthma and more recently appears that it might be associated with paralysis in a very, very small number of people, but were really not sure what the association truly is at this point. If family came to you and asked for your guidance based on the what you know, what would you suggest they do for their children . So we generally take a very simple but effective step, that is keep your children in general, its a good idea to keep your children away from other children who have active respiratory or other acute infectious illnesses, colds, coughs, gastrointestinal disease, make sure they wash their hands, be careful with handling items from people who are ill. If a child has respiratory systems, which is very common in young children, to just track those and if the child seems to be getting worse or theyre having trouble breathing, then i would make sure that your Health Care Provider is contacted to see what the next steps might be. As far as this particular virus goes, is there any documentation that it has aused paralysis . There are cases if of the virus, as far as im aware, are found in the intestinal track or the respiratory is he creations of a number of whirn who have had practicalsition but theres no evidence from the brain or spy nal fluid from children who have had paralysis that the virus has been present there. So we dont really know the answer to that yet. What about the Health Systems in the United States . Are they aware enough about this particular virus to make diagnose more accurate . Diagnosis more accurate . Yes, so the centers for Disease Control has a very highly publicized set of guidelines that theyve put out. Im also on the committee on Infectious Diseases for the American Academy of pediatrics, which represents almost 70,000 pediatricians around the country, and weve been highly publicizing not this particular virus per se but what to do for children who might have acute respiratory symptoms that need to be dealt with. And potentially also practical sills. Thank you very much for spending time with us paralysis. Thank you so much for spending time with us.
