Supplies. And today Governor Desantis activated 2500 members of the National Guard and cnn correspondents are every angle. Lets get started with tom sater. This looks like a very powerful storm that could unleash a lot of fury on the gulf coast, something we havent seen so far during this hurricane season. And it sounds like people need to wake up and Pay Attention. Everywhere from pensacola to ft. Myers. We didnt haven would named storm for the entire month of august and now we have four of them. If it wasnt for ian, wed be talking about fiona, massive damage up in canada. Notice how wide it is, the sun is out here and getting the reflection, but you can see the circulation. There is the yucatan. But the infrared Satellite Imagery is a mess. It doesnt look impressive at all. At 8 00 a. M. This morning, Hurricane Hunters had a hard time finding the center. They did find it. It can jump around a little bit. And if that center jumps around, it will change the track. And that is important because that is about evacuations and who will go where. Well, another Hurricane Hunter getting ready to fly in and around it, well get more information. But here is what we do know. The warmest waters right now in the entire atlantic are here. South of cuba, cayman islands. Were within 3300 miles. And so we expect it to become a hurricane either later this evening overnight, but it will be soon, and then it will feed on these warm waters and environment with light winds and as it heads towards western cuba, could be a category 3. These are surface winds and the storm surge wrapping around these bands, it will smash into that Southern Coast of cuba possibly 10, 12, 14 foot storm surge. Models mean everything and they have been fluctuating. Yesterdays models wanted to bring it in, curve it in from tampa or southward. Today is mainly up toward the panhandle. So what the National Hurricane center is doing is pretty much compromising and this is your cone of uncertainty. Anyone within this cone needs to be on the alert. Category 1, category 3, that is western cuba, to category 4. Major hurricane status. Even though the track calls it to weaken to maybe a cat 2 or 1, well be finding that even though it is the winds that are lightening, once it is a category 4, it is all that water will shove right into any community on this flank here. So dont Pay Attention to what the category is when it comes closer. The last one was michael, that was a category 5, we know the destruction with that. But again, trying to get a handle on the models. Notice burgundy, that is in the big bend area. So if were going to have it, lets have it there. Worst case a theirscenario is t. It would be down toward bradenton or sarasota, it could be a mess. So big discrepancies still, but this will be the first hurricane to really make landfall in the mainland u. S. We have a Couple Scenarios and well have to watch them all for the next couple days. But it wont take much longer. Glad youre on top of it. And i want to go to Carlos Suarez in tampa. Tom was mentioning where you are, the city is in the storms path potentially and one forecast model. Are they preparing at this point, maybe they are so battle hardened i suppose that they wait a little longer until it gets closer, but i suppose they need to start getting ready. Reporter yeah, thats right. Folks across the state of florida, they are really keeping a close eye on the latest track. Yesterdays forecast had the storm moving a bit further west of tampa here, but then this mornings forecast had it moving a little bit closer east. And so that has left a large number of folks across much of the state getting ready for some sort of impact with regards to ian. Now, here in tampa, city officials have opened three sand Distribution Sites and they have left open the possibility that they might issue an Evacuation Order down in the florida keys, Monroe County officials there, they have postponed they have not decided whether or not that they will ultimately ask visitors to leave the state at the earliest on monday or tuesday. Now, Florida Governor ron desantis, he said that 2500 members of the florida National Guard have been put on standby and hes already declared the entire state of florida under a state of emergency. He is just urging folks across florida to use the time now to get prepared ahead of ian. It is important to express the degree of uncertainty. There are different tracks. And even if you are not necessarily right in the path of the storm, there will be pretty broad impacts throughout the state. You will have riwind, water, the could be flooding on the east coast of florida as a result of this. It is a big storm. Reporter so all of the state resources as well as power crews exactly where they will be deployed will depend on exactly where ian makes landfall. Jim. Carlos, thank you. And ian will also likely hit western cuba as a major hurricane and Patrick Oppmann is in havana for us. Doesnt look too worrisome at this point, but you know these storms all too well. What are officials telling residents at this point . Reporter right now they are telling people to keep a close eye on the storms trajectory and prepare to evacuate. Certainly people who live on the coast, you were just hearing about that storm surge that they could be facing, there are so many people who live down near the ocean. And they will have to be moved back. Even in havana where you get tremendous flooding with a typical rainstorm, to have any kind of hurricane transparency type rain, that can cause massive flooding, that can cause buildings. And in cities that are poorly maintained as this one, to come collapsing down. So even if the storm doesnt hit in havana, it will affect western cuba and that could lead to buildings collapsing here in a city that is over 500 years old. And of course in the stores there is not much to buy on a good day here. No home depot to buy plywood. The economic pain cubans are already feeling will only be made worse by this storm. It will be hard to evacuate when there is so little transportation and already lines for gasoline and diesel. So people have been saying that they were praying there wont be a hurricane this summer. That is not going to be the case. This hurricane is going to have some kind of impact on cuba. Just remains to be seen how badly. But certainly in terms of the economy, it will make a bad situation that much worse. Yeah, life has been difficult for cubans for so long. And obviously this could just make things so much more troublesome. Patrick, thank you. Thanks for all our correspondents. And ken graham is joining me, Assistant Administrator for Weather Services with tnoaa. Are we seeing some of the bigger st storms now because of the Climate Crisis . Yeah, big picture, you look at these storms and a changing climate, one of the biggest indicators that we see is high rainfall rates. And so the actual rainfall is a leading cause of fatalities in these systems, the rain. And so you have to remember, you know, we think about the wind. When you close your eyes and think of a hurricane, you think about the wind, but it is the water that really is hurting people and that is what we really need to talk about. And it is increasing with climate change. And these storms when they get into the gulf, that water is so warm that it just super charges these storms and weve seen it time and again. When were looking at Tropical Storm ian, it looks like it will be and i dont know if we can share the modeling on the screen One More Time, it looks like it will be a 4 and then potentially weakening to a 2 or 1 before it hits the state of florida. That is obviously no reason for people to take their guard down, but id think in many of these cases you would see a storm get Even Stronger because of those warm gulf waters. What concerns you when you look at this right now . Really what concerns me with that is the perception. To go from a category 4 to a category 2, a lot of times what we do is let our guard down, so it is the physical science we talk about, but also the Social Science of this. And what happens is that wind field expands. So you can actually have more people impacted by a storm when it expands like that. So people cant let their guard down despite the category. Incredibly important to remember that. And tom was mentioning that, dont look at the number and think that you are off the hook here. Not the case. And today that officials said that ian could still produce category 4 storm surge. I mean, that could be devastating. Absolutely. And it is interesting because a category 2 that is large can produce more storm surge than a stronger storm that is small. So storm surge has so much do when you look at the science the size of the storm, spthe speed the storm. It is much more than just the category. So that is something to remember if you are on the coast, youve got to be prepared. You have another couple days to be prepared and listen to the local officials. And are you worried a bit that folks have been lulled into a false sense of security because it has been a Quiet Storm Season so far . Because the way things are changing, we could be in for a nasty one. Yeah, look at what happened in puerto rico. You look at canada, fiona and impacts there. Even the storm in alaska. So things are very active right now. You cant let your guard down. We always say it only takes one. So even though it is a late start, it doesnt matter, it only takes one to have some big impacts. We were covering fiona last week and just how quickly things can go downhill. And even just a category 1 hurricane can have devastating impact. And as florida prepares, officials there say that the residents should be ready to evacuate, you know, if they give the word. But many florida residents as you know, youve looked at these storms for so many years, i used to cover hurricanes down there, and, you know, floridians will tell you, oh, i can can make it through any storm. But when you look at ian and the way things are shaping up, people really need to get ready, they need to have a plan. Isnt that big part of this, that you have to hold out the possibility that this storm might be more than what you can handle . And different from past experience. So many people judged the current storm with what they have experienced in the past and the reality is every storm is completely different. So it is about having supplies, it is getting ready. Youve got two full days that you will start seeing the winds get into portions of florida wednesday and wednesday night. So you have two days to get ready, have supplies for 5 to 7 days. Medicine, food, water. You got to take it serious. You cant really think about your preparedness looking at the past. You have to think of the current and listen to the local officials as the storm heads toward florida. And if you have relatives inland, a few hours north in georgia or somewhere else in the southeast, start calling those relatives now. You may need to shack up with them for a few days. Ken, thank you very much. Impending storm is also impacting space. Nasa scrapped its third Launch Attempt of artemis 1. Will it ever get to space . Every trip is a big deal. It sounds like the plot of a scifi thriller, Saving The World from an astroid hurdling toward hurt. But dont worry, it is only a practice run. Nasa will test whether it can knock an astroid off its path. It will crash a spacecraft into it. And i want to bring in kneel Gee Gr De Grasse [ kneel defwragrass tyson. They have tried it in the movies and i think there was a part of dont look up, i believe that is another cultural reference we could make here. Is this a good idea . After i saw dont look up, i was certainly it was a Document It Area based on my life experience. So i think that it is one of the best ideas ever put into a Space Mission because built into it is the future security and safety of our species. And of course other species on earth. So the day an astroid is discovered headed towards us, you want to know that somebody has tested what it would take to deflect it. And by the way, all this talk about lets blow it out of the sky, you know, in america were good at blowing stuff up and less good at knowing where the pieces go afterwards. So deflecting an astroid is by far the most intelligent thing do. So this is a test for that. Do we have anything that is big enough to blow up an as astroid . I hope maybe crashing something into it might be the most feasible alternative. But how real of a threat is this . Let me make it clear, this is called the Double Astroid Redirect test. And what were doing here, being nasa, we the United States, is there is an astroid that has a little astroid moon, i guess we call it a moonlet. And it is orbiting that astroid. And all were going to do is crash into the moonlet and see what it does to the orbit of that moonlet around this astroid. So it is not like this is headed towards us right now and that well deflect it to Save Humanity. Bruce willis style. No, it is a test. That would be a slightly bigger story today if we were indeed trying to Save Humanity from a killer astroid. You think . I would hope so. I cant promise you that, but i would hope so. Let me move to artemis because im starting to wonder whether or not this mission, you know, was born under a bad sign or Something Like this. The third Launch Attempt of artemis 1 was set for tuesday, but nasa has since called it off because of hurricane ian, which obviously makes a lot of sense. Nasa will evaluate whether to roll back the Space Launch System to the ken nedy space center. Are you frustrated by this, i guess they are showing the appropriate amount of caution. And why do you think this is so important this mission . So a couple things. First, it has been 50 years since weve last been to the moon. So i can wait a few weeks. 24 i this is not a problem. And im glad that we have enough data on the launch specs to know when to scrub a mission and delay it and when not to. And of course a hurricane, florida is no stranger to hurricanes, so this is just another you know, of course, you will delay it. And by the way, there are no astronauts on this mission to the moon. It is basically a test what have is now the most powerful rocket on earth. And in case people didnt know, this artemis program, artemis is the twin sister of apollo. So that was a classy thing do i thought there just as a reminder that there are more genders in the world than men with crew cuts who sound like mission control. A whole lot of people we can send into space. And i think there is another one that is also uncrewed, and i think that it
