Story about who he checked first at the scene, supposedly . The first time i remember he checked maggie first and then went depaul to paul and then i heard him say one point that it was paul and it was. Maggie they Cell Phone Forensics Effort also testified for the defense. He analyzed the states data and timeline from the night of the murders. One key finding from him . Maggie murdaughs phone did not appear to be motion activated around the time the state has suggested that Alex Murdaugh may have tossed it from his moving car. Can you tell us how much motion would be required for the screen to come on on the phone . Its very little. And the times that Alex Murdaugh was passing this free never came on. Thats correct. The database indicated it was off. Randi kaye, that witness who was a friend of murdaugh, as he did not seem to do any favors for alec murdaugh. Correct me if im wrong, he said that murdaugh changed his story multiple times when the stories that he told his friend and that it was more dawes voice on that video . That is crucial. It was really interesting to watch is sort of unravel because the defense brought him in as the defense witness. And then he started to talk about the sloppy murder scene. As you, heard the piece of skull that was found in the feed room and then all these other points that he made, these changing stories from Alex Murdaugh to his friend of more than 35 years, and. Isnt so, he really, in the end, looked more like a state witness, a prosecution witness, then a defense witness. Thats incredible. Randi kaye, appreciated. Cnn town hall toxic trains, after a high residents peek out, hosted by jake tapper, starts now. A fiery train crash in rural ohio has left a town on edge, fearing for their health and their livelihoods. We need our residents to feel safe in their homes. Tonight, the residents of East Palestine question the people in power. Ohio Governor Mike Dewine all we can do is give people the facts as we test. We will tell people exactly what we find. Norfolk southern ceo alan shaw. We are going to be here today, we are going to be here tomorrow, and we are going to be here five years from now. And epa chief michael regan. We are not going to leave this community behind. Its the first televised town hall where residents share their stories. All i know, hes our town each help. They played for help and demand the truth. Good evening, and welcome to our Special Cnn Town Hall on the otono toxic Train Disaster. Tonight we are going to facilitate a muchneeded conversation between a community demanding accountability and the leaders charged with keeping them safe. In studio with me here are some of the residents of East Palestine, ohio, and they are joined by their neighbors from their hometown, which sits alongside the ohio pennsylvania border. These men and women have spent the last 19 days frightened and frustrated after a Train Derailments and hazardous chemicals into their air, into their soil, into their water. They have been told that its safe to breathe the air and drink the water but they have seen thousands of dead fish in local creeks. And many of them have felt and continue to feel ill. Tonight, for the First Time Since that disaster, residents are going to have a chance to directly question the ceo of Norfolk Southern, the Train Company at the center of all this, and the epa administrator, michael regan, and their governor, mike dewine. Some of the questions we have been hearing since we have been covering this story how could this happen . Is the air safe to breathe . Is the water safe to drink . Can the testing be trusted . We are going to let members of the Community Ask their questions in a moment. But first, lets bring in cnns jason carroll, also in East Palestine, ohio, to bring us up to speed. Jason . Jake, today, residents here and East Palestine got a visit from former president donald trump. Tomorrow, transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg will get his chance to do the same. Meanwhile, ohios governor says that going forward, ohios epa will independently test the municipal water that will be done out of an abundance of caution. That will be done once a week. Officials continue to say that the air and water is safe. But residents here on the ground have not believe that from the very beginning. Friday, february 3rd flames of burning rail cars light up the night sky and East Palestine, ohio. A Norfolk SouthernFreight Train with 100 cars is partially derailed, including nearly a dozen cars full of hazardous materials, including vinyl chloride, a cancer causing chemical. Theres two Evacuation Stations open. Residents evacuate as the blaze rages through the weekend. Firefighters are unable to get close due to the toxic chemicals and the possibility of an explosion. We had to weigh different risks with no great choices. Monday, february 6th, the decision is made to conduct a controlled release. This allows us to control that operation and not have the car react and do it itself. A large black plume can be seen for miles. The detonation went perfect and we are already to the point where the cars became safe. But residents are left wondering when it is safe to go home. We are all trying to get home, basically. But its kind of you cant get direct answers because nobody knows. Epa testing shows air and municipal Drinking Water did not have Dangerous Levels of contaminants. The Evacuation Orders lifted. And the railroad is reopened. But when they return, some residents complain of headaches, rashes and nausea. Watch this. You see that chemical pop out of the creek. This is disgusting. Thousands of dead fish floating in local creeks like this one, behind kathy reeses home. Air wise, i feel okay. Water wise . No. No. Theres just too many chemicals and stuff that works bill that they still dont want to identify completely. Officials say daily tests continue to show the air and municipal Drinking Water are safe. But residents have little trust in them. My kids say, where the people say, is the future of this Community Safe . Anxious residents demand answers. So far they have worked with us and they are fixing it. When that stops, i will guarantee you, i will be the first one to fight that. The apa order Norfolk Southern to complete all of the cleanup or the agency will immediately take over the cleanup and seek to compel the company to pay triple the cost. In no way shape, or form, will Norfolk Southern got off the hook for the mess that they created. The governor of Neighboring Pennsylvania announced his state made a criminal referral to investigate the rail company. Norfolk southerns corporate greed and incompetence and lack of care for our residents is absolutely unacceptable. And Norfolk Southern continues to vow to do what is right. We are going to continue to see this through and we are going to invest in this community and we are going to do it in the right way and we are going to do it at the right time. On tuesday, Public Officials visiting homes, and drinking from the tap to try and show the municipal water is safe. Yet, what remains is it deep level of mistrust and lingering questions about who will be around two years from now to make sure that no one has gotten sick. We will go through this process with the citizens of East Palestine for as long as it takes. We will stay here. We will continue to test. We will continue to do what needs to be done. Jason carroll, cnn, East Palestine, ohio. Our thanks to jason carroll. I appreciate. It i want to get to the East Palestine residents who are here tonight. Theyre joining us to answer their questions. Theres ohios republican Governor Mike Dewine, along with the state health director, bruce vanderhoof, and the head of the ohio epa and vogel. Ann vogel. Just a show of hands, raise your hand if you do not feel safe right now living in East Palestine, if you do not feel safe living in East Palestine, raise your hand. Okay. So, thats about four here and five in East Palestine. Let me start with you, jessica connor. You are a mother to three boys. You are a lifelong East Palestine resident. Tell Governor Mike Dewine why you dont feel safe. Thank you for being here, governor dewine and thank you jake for the question. I think i dont feel safe because i dont know what the future holds for my town. This has the potential to really decimate a small town like us. And we just bought our forever home last year. And i want to stay. My family is here and whether alive or buried my ancestors helped build this town. I live on a road that was named after my ancestors. And i want to know that it is safe to continue to live here and that people are going to want to come into our town to live as well. I just want to feel safe in my town again. And i dont feel safe right now. Governor mike dewine . Look, i fully understand well, i cant say i fully understand what you are going through. Because i did not have that trauma inflicted upon me. Its absolutely no fault of anybody in the village. It was two times the train wreck and then the controlled release. So, i understand that you are very, very concerned about what the future is. What we are trying to do is to continue to give you the best information that we can. And i can tell you that the best people that we can find are in there. These are experts. I dont ask you to take mike dewines word for. Im not an expert. But we brought in the best people that we literally can find. And we are testing the water. We are going to continue to test the air. As you know, we have got 20 monitors around town. We have gone into anybody who has asked us to go into their house. We have done that. And what those tests are showing is that the air is good. We were very careful in what we said about your municipal water, your village water. The experts said, we think its going to be good. We dont think its going to be a problem. But we all agreed we need to test it. So, we did in fact test it. We waited until we got the results back before we told anyone it was okay to drink the water. But we also know that there is going to be continuing concern about that. I dont blame you. I dont blame you at all. So, we are going to test that water every single week. We are going to continue to do it. I think the key and the mayor has said this to me and some residents have said this to me. Its a real concern that we are going to go away. When the tv cameras go away and the reporters go away, i think there is a concern that you are going to be left on your own. And my commitment to you is, thats not going to be true. We are going to hang in there. We are going to stay in their. We are going to do what needs to be done. I think your community is a great community. The people are resilient. They are strong. We are going to do everything we can so that you have a great future and your children have a great future. I appreciate that answer. I think my question more is, what about for those of us with private wells . Well appreciate the testing thats been done in town, ive several Family Members that have live outside that one mile zone. I personally have a private ouellet has not been tested. And we are on the list. We did call. We were assured that we would get scheduled. While we do live upstream an up wind, i do have family that does not. Thats family and more south of East Palestine. What can you tell people about testing their wells and the reassurances that you can provide for them . We are going to test those wells. Im sorry youre well has not been tested yet. But we are going to test it. Anybody that wants their well tested, we are going to test that well. Its a matter of your safety. But its also a matter of your peace of mind. So, we are going to do it. Someone else that raised their hand that they dont feel safe, 90 nieny did you raise your hand . Yeah. The experts are saying everything is okay. And yet, people having physical responses, the reactions. Thats my concern, is the water. Since i got home from evacuating, i still end up using the water, because i never know if its true, they are telling the truth or it is lie . I dont know. It sounds like theyre lying or i didnt understand . Thats why i never use the water until now i never. I use bottle water. I cant im not trusting what they are saying. So, i dont know who is telling the truth. So what do you say to that, Governor Mike Dewine . Because obviously, there are a lot of people throughout the history of the United States who have been told that things are okay and then they find out a year or two or three later that they werent. Yeah. We have been very careful not to tell anybody its okay until we have evidence that it is okay. The village water, we told people, dont drink it. We think its okay. But we are not going to know until we test that. If you have your own individual well, we have told, you dont drink it yet. Dont drink it until we not only have tested it but until we get results back. And look, there is still cleanup to do. Theres still many things to do. So, youre not telling you everything is perfect. No one can tell you that. Okay. But as we go through and do one thing at a time, and approach this in a methodical way, we are going to tell you when things are clear. Look, theres been a lot of noise on tv about when a senator went in and stuck a stick in the water. Look, we knew that what was bad. That water is not good. No one should be getting in that water or touching that water. And we are going to continue to monitor the different streams and the different creeks until they are safe. We are going to tell you that they are not safe. So, its not rosy. We are not saying everything is good. But there are hundreds of people in your community who have come in from other places where the experts. Im not an expert. But i listen to what the experts say and we try to get absolutely the best experts were. They are ill killed within that first 24 hours. We are not aware, the Ohio Department of natural departments as it up tells me they have no evidence there has been any fish killed. Beyond that first initial release that took place. So we are going to continue to monitor the water, the streams, the different creeks and continue to tell people what the results that we have. Lets go to my colleague sarah sidner, who is with our other East Palestine resident. Sarah . Jake, yes, we are here with a group of people who live here, are from here, and have been dealing with this and worrying about this. Not only for themselves but their children as well. Let me first start with corey newman. Courtney, you have a we are East Palestine shirt on. I am assuming one of those reasons is not only you are a mom but an Elementary School teacher. Correct . I am an r b t, a registered behavior technician. So you are in the schools. Courtney, can you give me an idea of what your family has gone through . And in particular, i hear that your son is having some medical issues after this. Yes, so i live a street over from the derailment. We are evacuated, stayed in in since weve been come home, my son has that bloody noses every day. I have had some skin issues. It has been overwhelming. Staying in a hotel for a week, coming home, trying to clean my house, and then go back to work on monday when school opened. And you have never seen this from your son or no. Having rashes . No. I am having the skin issues, is is bloody noses. He had another one today. I took him to the pediatrician on friday. I was told they had no guidance from the cdc, the Health Department, there was nothing they could do. I asked if they could do blood work and they said no. They said no . They said no. So, he says, i dont know what to tell you, we are in the dark as much as you are. Okay. But testing is often the first thing that you would do to try to come Out Of The Dark . Right. So im sure that needs to be addressed. I want to then, and thank you so much for sharing your story. And i am sorry to hear about your son. Thank you. That is so concerning. Josh hickman, who is sitting just here in the middle behind you. You are a long time East Palestine resident. And you have been living in a hotel with your family similar to what we just heard from courtney. Can you tell me what issues that you have been experiencing since this accident and explosion . Yes. Actually, i was in the yard just yesterday. I had to come back into town. I am still in a hotel, i havent returned home yet. It is not been deemed safe. And i have been staying in a hotel. And i have had to come back into town for just a few different things. And even since the night of the derailment, i have had the symptoms, sore throat, irritated nose, the headaches. I have been dizzy. I have also, you know, what sparked me to even go to the e. R. Was just an exacerbation of those same symptoms. And the bloody, knows, like when i blew my nose, the amount of blood that came out was alarming. And so i was here yesterday. That is terrifying to hear. That it is large amounts o
