He was on the way to turkey to syria and really only one reason that you would go that way, and so two reasons to have suspicions to his ties to terrorism, but no hard ties to this terror cell or to being involved in planning this attack and that is really where when you look at the characters as the police are trying to figure out if there were other members of the cell, you have the punitive connections, but not definitive kon neblg shuns at h this point, and the police are doing their best to piece it together but at this point, really they know that they are more interested the in him, but they dont know the substance to the connection to the plot. Is it clear at this point how many people may be part of this particular cell . No, it is not clear. You have heard the numbers of around half a dozen, but they could be suspected ties as opposed to operational members of it. What you are seeing there is that that the police honestly dont know and they are chasing down every lead, and this is one other worrisome thing. There are so many other organizations tied to the group. You have the yemen train ing foring for the kouachi brothers, and that is going to bring up al qaeda in the arabian e peninsula, and the kosher market attacker leading to the isis allegiance and then you have a pakistani isis terror cell, and so there is not so h many hardlines between the groups and there are associations there, and that is going to make it so much harder anderson to, snuff the groups out. He adopted his ideology off the internet and is looking at the Islamic State whose capital is in raqqa, syria, as a success. I mean, they have been able to hold on to land for more than six months and they rare in his view the caliphate. When you hear him yell manage the supermarket, he is not particularly well versed this in islam, and not using arabic, and so if if in his very simplifyied black and white world swearing allegiance to the caliphate, the Islamic State is a natural step. I dont think any of these people were particularly well educated in islam. No quotes from the koran. Theyre ground soldiers and can switch from one to the next. We heard from others as well. They werent particularly well versed in islam. The enthusiasm of a recent convert but not somebody who spoke arabic but hadnt done deep reading of the koran. Reporter thats right. It is thought that the coulibaly and the kouachi brothers had met in a mosque about 12 years ago and they came under the influence of a selfappointed imam who was a janitor at the time, and he has been rekrentcently discovered in a nursing course in paris afterhaving already been discovered for trying to recruit soldiers to fight in iraq. So no formal training in islam and thats reflective of a general lack of imams in the country who have been trained in studies. We talked about the easily concealed bombs the dhs is concerned about. In terms of how big of a threat they pose where do you stand on this . They are a loworder explosives and you could probably cause a fire on an airplane and get them through the tsa security but to bring down an airplane with household items, you would have to practice. You would have to have an oxidizer and detonate and have to know what you are doing b tow put it out and e telling inexperienced people how to blow up airplane, i dont see it happening. More breaking news tonight. Investigators successfully downloading data from the flight data recorder of airasia flight 8501. This comes as divers retrieve, as you know, the other black box, the cockpit voice recorder. Both devices, key pieces of the investigation that could help explain what happened to the plane. Also tonight, an indonesian official say searchers may have located the fuselage of the plane and say those on board may still be found. 48 passengers recovered so far. More than a hundred remain missing. Aviation correspondent rene marsh joining us with the breaking news. What happens now that theyve been able to download the information from the recorder . Reporter well, anderson, downloading the data from the recorder, thats the easy part. Its almost like plugging a usb into your computer. It can be done in about an hour. Now investigators are analyzing that information. The data recorders, as we all know, it contains hundreds of parameters, thousands of data points. Were talking about speed, altitude and whether any of the systems on the plane failed. Making sense of all of that data, of course, that will take a little bit more time. The voice recorder, do we know what condition its in . Right now, indonesian investigators, they are examining it. We do know that. They are looking for damage and it appears its in good condition. Of course, the voice recorder has enough space, we do know, to record everything that was said, every sound in the cockpit from takeoff until the point that the plane crashed. So it should also be a very quick download but what investigators will do next is listen closely frame by frame, identifying every sound that they hear from background noises to potential warning alarms going off and of course, the conversation between the pilots. And the fact that they believe theyve located the fuselage, that would be a Major Development for this investigation and for the families of the passengers. Reporter absolutely. Especially for the families. At this point, they havent confirmed it but they do believe they have found it. However, officials also say that many of the bodies of the people on board the plane likely will be found inside. And so, again, as you said, that would bring some closure to the families.
