The boat was traveling from a port just outside seoul to the Remote Island of jaju. Four passengers are dead, but there are almost 300 missing. At least 164 have been rescued. The u. S. Navy is on its way to help. But the clock is ticking on the hopes of finding survivors. Some of the compartments, the temperature will lead to hypothermia quickly. The other thing you keep in mind is that once the ship goes on its side or flips over, its incredibly disorienting, youre sideways or upside down, youre no longer walking on plofloors, youre walking along on inverted ceiling. Pa paula reporter im just in the harbor, and it is a heart breaking scene here. There are families on the shores just waiting for any sign at all of their loved ones. We know that there were hundreds of High School Students on this Passenger Ship and many of the parents are here desperately waiting for any news about their children. Just about an hour half ago, there was a tremendous amount of commotion, a mother here said that she got a tex message, she said there are a few people on the ship, were in total darkness, but tell people that there are still people alive here. As you can imagine, this text message was taken straight away to the emergency services. There are other parents that are worried that there was just a delay in the delivery of this text message but would be a cruel reality for these parents here. This just shows how desperately the parents here are waiting for some sign, any sign whatsoever that their loved ones are still okay. The search and rescue operation is still ongoing. We know that the boat is about 20 kilometers offsea from were at. We know there have been divers throughout the day getting into the ship. Its unclear if they were able to at this point as there are some strong currents out there. Christine. Some passengers heard this bump before the boat started policing and then tipped. Do we know anymore about what happened here . All we have at this point is those other eyewitness accounts, one of the passengers say that the shock of that impact did make people fall over, people were injured at that point and thats when the listing started. So obviously the assumption is that the ship may well have hit something. Were not hearing that officially. Were just hearing this from eyewitnesses and those passengers that were on board at the time. It did go down fairly quickly. It was just over a couple of hours that we saw this ship listing significantly achk lly of those on board were told to jump into the water and find a life jacket. We know that water is cold, 50 degrees in the waters around there and it has been many hours that some of those people have been missing, paula, thank you so much. Another snag in the deep sea search for flight 370. The unmanned blue fin 21 was forced to resurface for a technical problem that was fixed. While it was on board, officials downloaded data from that device. That data shows nothing significant on the ocean floor. Meanwhile the families of the passengers missing on that flight, they are fed up. They say there have been too many lives and broken promises, so today they stormed out of the Malaysian Airlines briefing. The we know if that bluefine 21 is still under water . Reporter it will be sometime in the next 12, perhaps 20 hours or so that we have a readout from whatever it is they finding down there. On the second day, it was sent to search for these vessels. Are they saying this is the right device for the job . Its the only device for the job, its the best tool they have available to them. It is a very technical tool, its very deep water, its not surprising that they would have set backs and deal with the softwaof the software, in the first instance it hit the 400 meter mark. In the second instance, it was seemed like it was a problem in the software that would now it seems to be operating hopefully along the parameters that they have expected it to and we will probably have the first good, long look at the depths there when this one comes back up, christine . We have finally come to this moment where they have finally deployed these subs after waiting almost a week. I would love to get a full 16hour search in, look at that data, hopefully find something. First we had the issue with the depth, but now some technical problems that we dont know the details on. But its certainly and it seems as if this is where the focus is going to be on under water. This is why the technical issues are so frustrating. Clearly from the air, scanning for debris has not really been that fruitful. Now theyre looking under water, thats where the focus needs to be. Thats right. And with the air search supposedly going to be ending soon, and rightfully so, and they cant keep up that human expense of folks working on that and then the Capital Expenditure without any results and i think that emphasizing the under water search and the bluefin 21 had to be reprogrammed because it was kind of at the edge of what its supposed to be do so they had to retool it and change the software. But we have to be patient and let the bluefin get adjusted and let it do its job. Is the Bluefin Technology the only technology for this out there . They will try other vehicles and they have the possibility of both unmanned submersibles and manned submersibles. The chinese have one that they have already said in news reports that they want to send down. I forget the chinese name but its translated sea dragon and that holds the record for under water dives, it can go down 4. 5 miles. Is there other technology . Are they doing the right thing from an investigation and crash stand point . We dont know everything that they know. When air france 447 was found, there was three autonomous under water vehicles that were used in a search pattern. So clearly were not doing it as intensively as we could. But then again, the search area that theyre looking at right now is fairly compact. We know where those pings were found, the range of the pinger locator is only about two miles stops. This is basically taking pictures with sound. Right. And mapping the floor, rolling sea floor, which investigators say is likely helpful, because there arent caverns and crevasses where debris could be hiding. It takes 24 hours for a full cycle. It seems like the top pogity, w dont know what happened today that cut it short. There might have been some underwater peaks or something. Remember, the device goes along, its programmed to go a certain height, a certain altitude as it were above the seabed. So if something juts up, it could have to stop and descend before it starts back up. If we have one bluefin doing all this work and we have shifted entirely to the under sea search, how long could this take . Well, based on past under sea searches for black boxes, it could take anywhere from two days, which was south African Airways in the indian ocean to several months, eight months, the one that went into the java sea took from january until august. So anywhere in between, and then of course air france, although it wasnt a solid search, they werent searching the whole time, they had to search and start searching again. It could be a matter of a couple of weeks, given the size of the search area, its a fairly co l compact search area, i think were looking at a couple of weeks. What makes this meeting especially disturbing is that he appears out in the open, unafraid of being seen, unafraid of being hit by an american drone. Its an unanswerable question, as you say, the u. S. Has had a very aggressive Drone Program in pack can. About 100 drone and missile strikes under president obama. Those strikes have killed Something Like at least 30 of al qaedas top leaders. To see this shows that these guys think that somehow, wherever they are, theyre not being surveyed by American Drones or satellites. When you look at the video, you can see some of the faces are blurred. Some of them are wide open in plain view, but some of the faces are blurred leading many to say, wow, these are fighters who may be out there attacking americans . Theyre certainly trying to disguise their identities. Some have gone public like the leaders of the group, and some havent. The al qaeda bombmaker, not seen in this video, but hes still a serious threat to the u. S. Fell us more about the capability of this particular branch of al qaeda and the people you see involved there. I think they really want to protect him, he has gone completely under ground, hes communicating by core your, hes making bombs capable of getting on planes without being detected. Theres some indication that this group is experimenting with planting bombs surgically into people, so they would be very hard to detect. These are people with real capables, and certainly a desire, they keep saying they want to attack the United States, they just released their magazine, the 12th issue called a video like this, is this a threat to the u. S. , an open threat, propaganda, are they trying to recruit new fighters, what do you think is the purpose of getting out there and spreading it around . I think recruitment is one, and i think recruitment is the main thing, because there will be analysts trying to work out exactly where this happened. Every time you release a video like this, its also what kind of clues can be derived from this kind of situation. Its quite rich with material that analysts will be poring over. And if we have silt on the bottom, that could be quite layered, quite deep and that could complicate how things are on the bottom. The vehicle its having trouble getting to the ocean floor in the sea area. There are a lot of challenges here. Reporter exactly, christi, thats a great way to put it. We wanted to come out here and show you how it works, i want to introduce you to james. There is sonar, but there ees multiple types of them . Theres a variety of technologies, primarily theyre going to use side scan sonar. Reporter how do they work. The sonars work in the same fundamental principle. Theyre going to be emitting sound. As that sound hits the sea floor and comes back to the sonar, its going to come up to either an image or data thats on the bottom of the ocean. This has gone into the indian ocean its a very complicated process, from the perspective of the sonar, its actually very good to have the sonar deep, it will produce very good data when youre nice and deep. But the complexity is getting that sonar down near the bottom. They have to get close to the sea floor, they have to dive through i want to look at how this data comes in. One of the things theyre looking at is the lower they are t better the resolution is, correct. Thats correct. And in a detail, they have to make a decision in terms of what size of object are they looking for and what level of detail are they going to find it . Because the higher the level of detail, the smaller the area youre going to search in any one point. We have talked about mowing the grass and thats come up a number of times. This is out here now, so we have got a portion of the map that we have already built up. Theres track lines and theyre going to be runging the av across these track lines, theyre going to be slowly building up this map as far as whats on the sea floor. So much of this sea floor isnt mapped . As they go down to the bottom of the ocean, and they Start Building this map, theyre going to learn more information, is there a lot of clutter, or is it just generally calm and silty or can they use lower resolution to cover a broader area
