Power lines exploding in North Carolina where Ophelia Made Landfall this morning. Allison chinchar is tracking the storm from the cnn weather center. And brian todd is in alexandria, virginia. What is ophelia doing . Its still kind of chugging along, making its way akpcross North Carolina. Weve got outer bands stretching up to pennsylvania, new york, even massachusetts. The same winds right now are 50 miles an hour guesting to 65. The heaviest rain is really focused over virginia and North Carolina at the moment. Youve still got some pretty heavy bands, although the bulk is starting to push inland and away from the coastal areas. You have Flood Watches and Flash Flood Warnings in raleigh and off to the east. Theyve already picked up 23 inches of rain. Now youre going to get an additional 12 on top of that. It begins in the evening to spread more into the mid atlantic. By sunday the bulk of the moisture will be located in the northeast. A flood threat for both today and tomorrow, just two separate locations. Today the focus is on North Carolina and virginia, tonight spreading ing over the mid atl. The storm will continue to weaken over the next 2436 hours, but thats for the winds, not necessarily the rain. As that storm spreads north and out towards the east, the winds will start to come down, but the rain is still expected to be quite strong. Thank you so much. Brian, where you are, it doesnt look like the rain is there, but the wind is. Reporter its been an odd Weather Pattern in the d. C. Area. Were in alexandria, virginia, that is vulnerable to flooding. Look how close we are to the potomac river. High tide is in roughly three hours. Then theres another high tide tomorrow morning. This is vulnerable to flooding even in normal rainstorms. When i talk about the weird Weather Pattern, what i can tell you about the pattern overnight and into this morning is we started to feel those bands of rain overnight. Then it alternately had drizzle, then heavy rain, then wind, then it would fade in and out. We are expecting more rain later on today. This area is particularly vulnerable. We talked to two Business Owners near here. They say the problem here is its not only low to the water and that surge from the high tide is going to napush that war up onto this street. But also the sewers here are old and end to flood very easily. A couple of Business Owners tell me they did expect this area here to become completely flooded in a couple of hours. Take a look that the Sewer Opening over there. Again, we dont see a lot of flooding right now, but its coming in the next couple of hours. Standing water, some flooding known for that area sometimes even when you dont have a crazy deluge like you might be expecting today. It sounds also that those conditions are not defterring some music playing. Reporter well, theres a lot of people still milling about. This is a very popular area for people on the weekends here and there are people here playing music and walking around. That probably will cease later on today because we do expect more rain and flooding. These businesses and homes here are very susceptible to flooding. These stores here may be stacking sandbags later on. The owner of that cafe just told us that she is more worried about what happens at high tide tomorrow morning, because thats when it tends to get worse after a storm like this. They may have to sandbag these two businesses over here. Brian todd, thank you so much. Now to the ongoing response to this weeks surge of migrants at the southern border. U. S. Customs and Border Protection has resumed operations at the International Railway crossing bridge in eagle pass, texas, after the agency shut it down to redirect personnel because of the influx of migrants. Meantime, Homeland Security secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is set to individual the Rio Grande Valley in texas today. Priscilla alvarez is joining us along with raphael romo. First, what is happening at the border . Is there a response coming from the Texas Governor . Reporter yeah, thats right. The first thing weve noticed is that in the last 24 hours the number of migrants being detained at the border has decreased significantly. We were talking to the mayor of eagle pass. He says anywhere between 800 to 1,000 people were detained. Thats much lower than we had seen during the week. So thats one development. We got in touch with the government of panama. Theyre telling us Tens Of Thousands of migrants have crossed through their territory in the last few weeks alone. Number two, texas is going to start bussing again many migrants to municipalities around the country, main the ones being run by democrats. Look at these numbers. Just to our nations capital, nearly 12,000 migrants being bussed there, new york with 14,000, chicago 8700. That gives you an idea what texas is doing. They theyre specifically sending, according to the office of Texas Governor greg abbott, buses from two cities to send those migrants from the border to cities run by democrats. Secretary mayorkas is visiting texas today. What has his response been thus far about the surge of migrants, the growing frustration from local officials there from el paso as well as other City Officials throughout the country who are saying they have reached their limits with being able to assist . Reporter well, the secretary is going to join the president of honduras when he visited the Rio Grande Valley today. They are expected to discuss how they coordinate and cooperate when it comes to slowing migration in latin america. When you talk to white house officials, this is an issue they see can only be solved with regional partners as they face Unprecedented Mass Movement in the western hemisphere. We know there are still hundreds of thousands of migrants who are moving through latin america, especially those from venezuela coming to the u. S. Southern border. This was a week where all of that came into sharp focus as we saw Border Crossings Go up to 8600 a day. We havent seen those numbers since late spring. In may numbers were around 3500 daily. So a marked increase this week that really put pressure on the white house and the administration to have to shore up resources to the u. S. mexico border. As all of that was unfolding, the administration also announced they were going to make nearly half a million venezuelans eligible for work permits who are already in the United States, addressing a major stress point with new york city. Theyre also Nav Goodigating Th complicated Political Landscape as they deal with an increase of border crossings. What could potentially come from this meeting between Secretary Mayorkas and the honduran president . Honduras is the second country in terms of people from that country that get detained by the u. S. Border patrol at the southern border. Mexico has about 12 times the population of honduras, but honduras comes second with more than 186,000. You were mentioning the president , who is considered a leftist whos been in power since january of 2022. Her predecessor is now in jail in the United States. He was extradited in April Of 2022 on Drug Trafficking charges. That gives you an idea of the situation that regular hon duras are experiencing and the reason they feel they need to dom the United States to seek a better life. One would think part of the discussions would have to do with trying to incentivize hondurans to stay in country, which would mean potentially Financial Assistance or some other sort of promises of resources from the u. S. To honduras to allow the government or help the government to come up with plans like that . Theres two main issues when it comes to honduras. Number one is poverty. We have been there multiple times. The level of poverty in honduras is among the worst in central america. Thats issue number one. Thats one of the reasons hondurans decide to migrant to the United States. Number two, security. There are entire areas in honduras that are run by the criminal organizations that terrorize the population, and thats the reason you see so many people who decide to just leave everything behind and try to make it to the United States. Even if the writers do come to an agreement, it is going to take some time before these productions go back to normal. So a lot of people just hoping and praying this comes through. The union had encourage d everyone to come out yesterday. We did see that on the streets of los angeles. Theyre thanking people for coming out to the picket lines. They say theyre going to continue to work toward a deal that these writers deserve. A lot of people impacted from caterers to set design, construction and makeup, all of it. Thank you so much. My sense is they are engaging very closely on nittygritty issues, the things that take time to work out. You mention a. I. , but also residuals, number of episodes and that sort of thing. I think its wise to be cautious about whats going to happen next. If there is a deal thats worked out, the Writers Guild strike has been going on since mid may. A monumental shift this week when Rupert Murdoch announced that he is stepping down as the chairman of fox news. He said lachlan is going to be the one who follows suit for him. What do you suppose is next potentially for this company . Is it going to be changed in a significant way . Or has rupert been essentially grooming lachlan to carry on what he put in place . I think this move of making Lachlan The Sole chairman is a nod to wall street. I think when your executive is 92 years old, there may be worries from investors. I think rupert will still have influence on the company. He still owns the Voting Shares that the kids have not inherited yet and wont until he passes on. They still dont put their sports on streaming. Fox news and fox sports Live Audience want to try and keep it that way. When rupert told most to disney, they try to keep true to the streaming very quickly and im not sure how much longer they cannot dive into digital in a more meaningful way.
