The tenth time in the last 11 seasons. University of iowa beat the pants off of western michigan. And the pants were off of one of the cheerleaders. His drawers dropping down while doing flips. But he still sticks the landing. Pulling his pants up as quickly as they fell down. His teammates absolutely loving it. That was the favorite of the day, pants down. Thats my favorite. Kour, thacoy, thank you so m. Hello everyone, given, thank you for joining me, im fredricka whitfield. Theres a new round of talks between striking autoworkers and representatives from two of the big three autoworkers. The strike is entering its third full day. Todays talking expected to be with ford and General Motors. The uaw said it had reasonably productive talks when it met with ford yesterday. For the first time ever, workers are striking at plants from gm, ford and ststalantis. The carmakers say despite big profit in recent year, the raises they demands will drive them out of business, cnn areas Vanessa Yurkevich is at a ford plant. Vanessa, any new optimism . Reporter well, its good news that ford and General Motors are back at the Negotiating Table for the second day in a row after the targeted strike plan rolled out by the uaw. A spokesperson said theyre back to the stable. We heard from john thamel on morning shows, he said theres not been a ton of progress in the negotiations. Its been slow. And he also said its a nogo on the historic offers by the big three of 20 wage increases over the next four years. The unit wants 40 . I want to bring in rose salecky. Shes been working the at ford for over 40 years. You know whats going on, fourday work week and production from the ev transmission. Whats been the priority for you . To help the lower seniority people. Reporter tiered wages, folks coming in at lower i came in at 12. 77 an hour. Theyre making just over 17 an hour 30 years later. Theres no way that the economy with the cost of everything that they could handle, i have a 21yearold and a 25yearold and they have to live at home because they cant afford an apartment. Do they work for ford as well . No. I dont want them to. Reporter why dont you want them to . Wear and tear on your body. Just reporter i want to ask you about the 40 that the union has been Holding Steady to. Those wage demands. Obviously the Big Three Have offered 20. Whats a fair compromise for you . Id say 25 to 30, you know, its right down the middle. Its we gave up a lot in 2008 to help ford out during the recession. We didnt get any raises for three contracts so its time for us to get something. Reporter how much patience do you see here on the picket lines, people willing to you wait this out, you willing to wait this out . Yeah. Everybody has been awesome. Morale is high. Weve seen unions, nurses and teachers and everybody come by and tell us that, you know, good for you. Thank you so much, rose. Appreciate it. We know that Hakeem Jeffries, minority lead are Hakeem Jeffries just arrived across the street at the uaw local. And were also hearing that acting labor secretary julie sue actually headed to detroit at some point in this coming week to try to help move these negotiations along. President of the uaw says he wants to work out a deal with the big 3 without help but President Biden sending Administration Official before this escalates even further. Roses comments there, they really hit home. A big appreciation to her honesty and candor there on what life is like and the purpose of why she and others are striking. Lets get more analysis now on the strike and the hope and the negotiations. Im joined now by cindy, a professor at the law school in michigan. How is this being interpreted if youre one of the big three automakers . Well, her comments really go to the big pay disparity between the ceo, the higher level executives and the Rank And File. And i think that 40 number comes from the amount of raises that the executives were enjoying over the last four years or so so i think theyve locked into that that if they can get it, why cant we . And the Rank And File, as i understand it were at more like 6 during that period of time. This really brings up an issue thats i think been burning in the Popular Press and academic circles. Should the pay gap between top executives and average workers be so high . Were running about 300 times the ceos are earning about 300 times the average workers of the united states. Thats a pretty big number. So how do you close the gap . Should you close the gap . Are we comparing apples and oranges . And in some ways we really are. In other ways when the Rank And File sees they can afford it from the top executives. And then who is going to resolve that pay gap if not the people who make decisions for those big three automakers who are enjoying very sizable profits . Exactly. And its been a tricky, tricky issue for a long time. So on the one hand you want to get the best talent for your executives and you have to pay a market rate for that. And youre comparing the market. No executive wants to be at the low end of the pay scale so youve got that competition. Companies want to roll out that weve got the best, the brightes, the most talented. So theres really pressure on the high pay scales for that. Weve got the sec trying i think to roll it in i think a little bit. In 2018 they require companies to publish this pay ratio but afraid that actually publishing it it tells the executives what everybody else is making and it may end up feeding the increase along the way. So when representatives of the car makers say the demands of the uae of a 40 pay increase, that that would drive them out of business, is that to be believed . Is it that extreme . Is there some middle of the road, then, if that is the case that it would drive them out of business . How do you get at least closer to 40 if not 40 . I would think you could get closer but i dont have the numbers. I do know if labor costs become too high, then either theres the threat of going out of business or the threat of moving Labor Operations to a more affordable jurisdiction. So theres always the threat that they could move labor abroad. But, you know, a big problem is that you want to have happy workers. People that are happy, theyre more product ive, theyre going to be giving the company their all and as weve seen in rough times theyve been likely to make concessions if they had to. But if they feel theyre being trampled on, thats a whole other story. What is to be understood by at least one of the auto makers who is now saying layoffs are coming for nonstriking workers but its about to happen. What is the message that these automakers are sending now while theyre in the midst of these negotiations with the Union Workers . I think theyre saying that the strike has consequences and if their workers who are on strike, that may mean other jobs are not needed in this moment because of the strike, they cant get that particular part of production going if the other workers are on strike. So i think theyre just maybe reminding the uaw and the striking workers that strikes do have consequences beyond the individuals on the picket line. Professor, thank you so much. Thank you. A new Court Filing Says the u. S. Border patrol separated some Migrant Children from their parents while the families were in custody at a facility in donna, texas. Some of the children were as young as 8 years old. Border officials cite overcrowding as the reason for the separation. Arlette, what is the administration saying about this . Fred, this episode highlights the humanitarian and logistical situation facing the administration. Many of these houses arent intended to house people for long periods of time and its leading to strains. This report found a pediatrician, dr. Paul weis, visited several facilities over the course of the facility and in donna, texas, he found there were children who had been separated from their families, some of these children as young as 8 years old and some not seeing their parents for four days. The Boredder Patrol Officials Ss the reason is due to overcrowding. Typically they have families and minors and in separate areas and they say they do have times they have to separate them from their parents. And they say the health and safety is paramount, and they prioritize keeping Families Together at every step of the immigration process. We will continue to review the report and associated recommendations and will respond as appropriate. Its important to note this is different from the policy of the st Trump Administration which will separate parents from children and deport parents without their children with them. It does highlight some of the strains the administration is facing as theyve seen an increase of people coming to the borders. More than 7,000 migrants are coming daily, close to the numbers back in the spring when title 42 had been lifted. And republicans had tried to make this issue of the administrations handling of the border into a Campaign Issue for President Biden. So this is one of the challenges that theyre facing not just today but leading into the election next year. Arlette, thanks so much. Dreamers are facing another legal setback. A judge has ruled against the Biden Administrations efforts to preserve the Obama Era Program known as deferred action for childhood arrivals. Here is our national correspondent. Reporter the success of this mexican family Canndy Business S In Part thanks to daca. When we got daca, it was like a boost, like a catalyst. And then things just happened faster. Things were easier. Licenses, loans, leases, all possible after ramone began benefiting from the Obama Era Program. Now ignacio and his two siblings benefit from daca. They make part of the more than 580,000 socalled dreamers in the u. S. Undocumented immigrants often arriving at the u. S. At a young age, shielded from deportation. But a federal judge in texas this week ruled that a regulation intended to preserve daca is unlawful. The time is running out. I think that even if the Biden Administration appeals, i believe they will and i think it will go all the way up to the Supreme Court, looking at our Supreme Court and looking at the law, i think it likely the Supreme Court would find it unlawful and then its over. Jean reese, professor at uscs law school says the ruling could force a more permanent solution. People are reminded of the resolution and puts pressure on reform. Reporter At The Center of the issue is the scope of the president s authority, which is why for thyears theyve tried t come to an agreement and failed. I think the agreement is there. I think because certain factions of congress have taken a position against daca, its hard to come back to the middle and st save face. The dreamers are in limbo once again. Yes daca, no daca. Reporter the texas ruling does not impact current beneficiaries, but it does prohibit new applications, yet the reality is that ignacio does feel impacted. Im living comfortable now but what if one day someone decides to come and end daca . Thank you so much for that report. All right. All right. This week in an historic decision the Department Of Justice filed three gun charges against hunter biden, President Bidens son. The special counsel charges include two counts of making false statements on a federal firearm form and one count of possession of a firearm as a prohibited person. This stems back to 2018 when hunter biden bought a gun from a delaware gun shop and allegedly lied on a federal form when he swore that he was not using and was not addicted to any illegal drugs. Hunter was at the time struggling with the crack cocaine addition. Our cnn contributor and Gun Instructor and Firearms Reporter for thereload. Com. Is it your feeling that it is an Uphill Battle for prosecutors going after hunter biden on these gun charges in connection with his alleged drug use . I think hes probably made it a lot easier on him by admitting a lot of these things in public as far as his drug use goes, he wrote a whole book on it which probably led to his prosecution in the first place.
