Morning starts now. Good morning, good morning. Welcome to cnn this morning. Im vc egg tore blackwell. Im amara walker. Thanks for being with us. Were going to begin this morning with dangerous Weather Conditions caused by now posttropical cyclone lee. The storm is packing hurricaneforce winds, heavy rain, and dangerous storm surges as it swipes the new england coast. Now, while lee is not expected to make landfall in the u. S. , the outer bands of the powerful storm are already hitting the east coast, packing winds of 60 miles an hour and bringing storm surges that could cause flooding along the new england coast. Tropical Storm Warnings through nantucket and maine, and authorities are telling people to prepare to stay where you are as the storm pushes north through the day. Lees also expected to cause dangerous rip currents along the Atlantic Coast with a lot of states warning people to stay out of the ocean this weekend because of the dangerous surge conditions. Of course, were covering all parts of the storm with cnns Derek Van Dam in cape cod and Allison Chinchar in the weather center. Derek, lets start with you on the cape. What do you see . Reporter the storm is so massive. A lot of hospitality and beach homes here and inns and suites, bed and breakfasts have handled this storm like its a noreaster. Theyre used to this. Theyve taken in the furniture. To give you a bit of a perspective of where we are, you can see the Atlantic Ocean behind me. Some 300 to 400 miles over my lefthand shoulder is where the center of Hurricane Lee is located. It seems tame here, but weve had the occasional Tropical Stormforce gusts. The storm is so large, the wind field that expanded, literally ballooned over the course of this past week, means that the impacts will be felt well outside of where that center eventually makes landfall. Check out my graphics, and you can see exactly what im talking about. 400 miles roughly. Thats how far the winds extend, and that has implications for the new england coastline, particularly where i stand into cape cod, nantucket as well. Its just incredible to see if you time that with the tide on my graphics, weve had low tide at the peak of the storm. Thats also a bit of saving grace in this area. That means the low tide and the highest winds are not in conjunction or are in conjunction. That double mean well have this coastal large storm threat as we would have had at high tide. Look at the wind gusts. You can feel it occasionally 0 to 35 miles per hour. There have been reports of large breaks on the water near nantucket thats just out over the open ocean there upwards of 20 feet. Obviously Hurricane Lee sending a massive amount of energy from the Atlantic Ocean. That will cause some beach erosion. But really the concern here is that this storm is packing quite a punch especially as we go a little bit further to the north and east, Down East Maine there. That is the area where we expect some of the hardest and worst impacts from this. Here at the cape, theyre treating this like a noreaster. You can see the wind gusts there, about 20 to 30 miles per hour. Not quite Tropical Storm force. Allison, youve seen this. It a is been lurched toward the new england coast line. It looks like its moments if not hours away from nova scotia. Have you seen that . Its starting to approach portions of nova scotia. The southern bands are starting to hit parts of the u. S. This is a live look at bar harbor, maine. You can see the rain dotting the camera from time to time. Also the trees in the background. The winds are starting to pick up across this region and in maine in general. The bands are starting to slide in across the coastal regions here of that Down East Maine region and thats going to continue throughout much of the afternoon. The Heavy Rain Bands pushing in toward New Brunswick and nova scotia, canada. Even though its transitioned to posttropical cyclone lee, the impacts remain the same. Youre looking at gusts of up to 100 miles per hour. The storm is faster, moving to the north at 25 miles per hour. Its expected to make landfall in portions of nova scotia in the next few hours. Again, when we continue to track a lot of the winds, youll notice a lot of the winds are going to be strongest on the eastern side. The winds are going to focus over portions of nova scotia, whereas, the u. S. Portions are going to see gusts around the 40 to 60mileanhour range. I em fa seize thats enough to bring trees down and power lines. Were still going to be looking at Power Outages for many areas of the u. S. , even though the worst of the storm will be over canada. The u. S. Will still have several impacts. The other is going to be rain. Youve got Rain Stretching through rhode island, up through maine. But 1 00 this afternoon, youre looking at light showers across massachusetts, but the heaviest rain will be focused across maine. Once we get toward the evening, the bulk skpreds to canada only and then finally all of the system is out of the u. S. Youre looking at widespread amounts of 2 to 4 inches. Some could pick up 6 inches. You do have stretches of flooding through caribou, maine, and bar harbor and east of portland. Wind and rain are going to be the main concern with this, so do expect Power Outages across this region. Double team there, allison and derek there, thank you very much. The uaw and autoworkers are expected to continue negotiations today. Its day two of the strike. Thousands are walking the picket lines in eight major cities. 80 have been left off the proposals, but fords ceo shout back and said the unions wage demands would put his company out of business. 40 increase is what theyre asking for. But the union and autoworkers argue record profits the last few years have not been shared fairly with the workers. The ceos and big boys that talk on tv, its a lot of money. How come they took it . They aint working like the people in the plant. Theyre sitting in their office. How come theyre getting the big raise all the time, 30 raise. All right. Cnn White House Reporter kevin liptak joining us now with more. Good morning, kevin. President biden as you know has labeled himself as a prounion president. But hes in a tough position right now, especially as hes pushing for this transition to Electric Vehicles, which is also concerning to many of those workers. Reporter yeah. The strike hits a number of competing objectivings for the president. On the one hand you say hes the most prounion president in american history. Its at the heart of his political identity and agenda, but on the flip side, a prolonged Work Stoppage could really damage the economy, both michigan and nationwide depending on how long it proceeds. Really, in the lineup to this strike as the two side were at the negotiating table, the white house did avoid taking an explicit position on either side of this, but you did see that change yesterday in the roosevelt room, the president coming out very forcefully on the side of the union, on the side of the autoworkers saying record profits for the automakers must translate to a Record Contract for workers whose wages he says had eroded over the past few years and benefits. Listen to a little more of what the president had to say yesterday. No one wants a strike. Ill say it again. No one wants a striechlkke, but respect what theyre doing. There should be Record Contract for the uaw. Reporter this really is at the intersection of so many of the president s political objectives including the transition to Electric Vehicles, and one of the sticking points for the autoworkers in these talks has been the concern that manufacturing of Electric Vehicles could lead to lower wages, fewer jobs. In his remarks yesterday, the president said this transition could be a winwin for both sides, but certainly that is a lingering concern for the uaw as these talks proceed. Now, the other objective for the president , the important thing that this could have a role in is electoral politics in michigan. Thats a political battleground state. This is a state that will be affected by this work stop alk. Of course, the president is also pursuing an endorsement from the uaw. They have withheld that up until now. The president said he was dispatching two of his seniormost aides, Gene Sperling who has been acting as the gobetween for the administration in these talks and the acting member going to detroit. Meanwhile cnns Vanessa Yurkevich sat down with general moe motors ceo mary barra. Heres what she had to say. We understand america has changed. I think our Manufacturing Team is the best on the field. The way they managed the covid situation and the way they managed they moved with us as we went through the semiconductor shortage, and still the supply challenges we see today, thaw ear very resilient. I want to recognize them. The Manufacturing Team along with the Engineering Team in the last two years has been number one in j. D. Powers quality. We have a very talented team. We put a historic offer on the table and thats why im so disappointnd and frustrated. The union is demanding a Wage Increase over four years. They ask because ceos raich yourself are making pay increases over the past four years. You make almost 30 million. Why should your workers not get the same type of pay increases that youre getting leading the company . Well, if you look at compensation, my compensation, 92 p of it is based on performance of the company. One of the strong aspects of the way our compensation is dedesigned is not only are we putting a 20 increase on the table, we have profit sharing. So when the company does well, everyone does well. For the last several years, thats resulted in record profitsharing for our employees. I think you have to look at the whole Compensation Packageful not only 20 increase in gross wage but also the profitsharing aspect of it, worldclass health caring, and there are several other features. We think we have an offer on the table. Thats why we have to get back there and get this done. It could have an impact on the economy especially with how long the strike goes on for. Cnns Rahel Solomon has more. Victor and amara, good morning. This is going to come down to time, how costly this is will hinge on how long this strike continues. If it is an extended strike, analysts warn the economic costs will add up. One estimate is the strike could cost the company 5 billion if it lasts ten days. One thing to consider with that estimate, that would have been a full strike of the uaw, 145,000 workers. At this point about a tenth of that figure is actually striking. Keep that in mind. That estimate includes things like lost pay, losses to manufacturers, wu also suppliers. The other thing, mark zan city, Chief Economist of moodys said a full strike lasting six weeks would be the equivalent of shaving 0. 2 from the gdp. He says thats modest, but its meaningful when you think of the other economic headwinds were experiencing, student loan repayments, rising oil prices. Guys, if it feels like theres been more strikes than usual, yeah, its not just your imagination. Whats behind the increased Strike Activity here in the u. S. And around the world. I asked an expert about that. He said high inflation, a tight labor market which has workers feeling like they have the upper hand. They can ask for things they want. Public support has steadily increased for unions and alsco individual 19 a as work irs continue to think about the type of Work Life Balance that they want. Autoworkers fall behind the average workers. According to the government data, theage hourly pay is about 29 where the average around the country makes about 33. 82. We should say for the automakers par, they say, wait a many, we have to worry about prices as well because we have to compete with the nonunion competitors. So they have to be conscious of prices as well. So, vick for and amara, clearly the two sides are still pretty far apart as far as we can tell, but ultimately the damage that can be caused in terms of the economy will really depend how long the strike will take. Of course, only time will tell, victor, amara . Thank you. Still ahead, donald trump is lashing out at special council of the 2020 election interference case.
