CNNW CNN Democratic Presidential Debate Post Analysis August 1, 2019

Shoutout as well. Got to take care of your governors. He did do a good job. He did. He did a good job on climate. He did a good job on executive experience. I thought jay inslee was the question, i cant remember which asked it is, on the stage with donald trump. Donald trump was on a stage in 2015 16 with 15 other Top Republican candidates. And, you know, that i mean it was worse than that was just ten. There were 15 or 16 people on that stage. Yeah, but he was and he wiped the stage with people. He was the bully, though. He was calling people names. Okay. Hes not going to get any nicer on this. None of these people are going to mimic that behavior because when republicans mimic that behavior, if you recall, when marco rubio did it, it didnt do them any good. Right. I dont know how going toetotoe, yeah, hes a bully. Hes going to call them names. Whatever. We all know the games. Can any of them actually respond. I mean, the person who probably could go the best at donald trump, if you look at the entire two nights, is Elizabeth Warren. Who is a good debater. So far. Has some passion. Has some policy for the country. Kamala, the first debate could have taken on donald trump 100 , too. Let me just add something. The thing is that what we need a fighter, need a problem solver, we need a visionary. We have vans about to announce his candidacy. But think about it. Listen, you can point to some fighters, you up can point to some visionaries. The only person who is all three is Elizabeth Warren. Right. Thats got to be the takeaway, whether you like it or not. After two nights. No, no, whether you like it or not, shes very shes proved herself to be a great, great debater. Shes run a great campaign. There are people who have philosophical differences with her and theyre hoping that biden will represent that choice. And the question is not how he will stand up on a stage with donald trump. Thats a next level question. The question is how will he stand up on a stage with Elizabeth Warren and will he carry that banner but its also in a way that moderate democrats hope he will. I think its also easy to be too hard on the joe biden or Kamala Harris. Right. As the frontrunners on that stage tonight. I mean, it is very early in this race. Sure. Totally. Obama sure. Were also invested in it. This is such early days. Candidates get better. Yeah. Kamala listen, one thing i know about Kamala Harris, ive known Kamala Harris for 20 years. Just like obama he struggled in a couple of those first debates and he got better and better. Kamala harris will review those tapes and she will come back. Anybody who thinks you just saw the best of Kamala Harris, wait until next debate. When we have a stage that is single digit in candidates, it is a completely different ball game. Everybody is going to be able to tell their story a little bit more. Theyre going to be able to draw contrasts. Its not going to feel like a pinata with 30 kids with sticks. Heres what Kamala Harris and biden saw tonight. In this process for running for president , the better you do, the better you have to do. Every stage of the way, if you are if youre moving up, youre going to get greater scrutiny. Youre going to get more interrogation in these debates. Youre going to get more pressure and you have to be able to deal with it as it comes. And so that will be something to watch as this thing ratchets up. Warren has not shown shes shown great tenacity in terms of dealing with the pressures. She was written off early. Shes now way back in the mix. And we saw her last night. These other candidates if theyre going to compete are going to have to raise their game. Well, and also shouldnt biden be better right now . I mean, hes been a politician no, not necessarily. Since the 1970s. Hes been Vice President. Hes run for president twice. We compare him to obama. Obama was, like, what 46 years old . Youre so stuck in the past. I mean david remembers it not necessarily. When youve been Vice President or youve been president , youre not used to people coming and attacking you. But isnt that his argument, that hes really great and serious. But not as a debater necessarily. Hes been a good debater in the past but hes never been a frontrunner. Right. When youre a frontrunner thats right. As he discovered tonight, everybodys going after you. I said it the other day, the mario cuomo quote, only in cowboy movies do people shoot backwards. Everybody shoots at the guy in front. Hes the guy in front. Hes going to have warren and sanders on the same stage with him, and then hes going to be attacked by both of those people who who believe truly in what they are talking about. And different attacks than the attacks tonight. Actually, lets look at some of those attacks. We have a bit of a montage. Lets take a look. I asked the Vice President pointblank did he use his power to stop those deportations, he went right around the question. Mr. Vice president , you want to be president of the United States. You need to be able to answer the tough questions. Mr. Vice president , you cant have it both ways. You invoke president obama more than anybody in this campaign. You cant do it when its convenient and then dodge it when its not. Your plan by contrast leaves out almost 10 million americans. So i think that you should really think about what youre saying. Joe biden told wealthy donors that nothing fundamentally would change if he were president. If you want to compare records and, frankly, im shocked that you do, i am happy to do that. First of all, mr. Vice president , it looks like one of us has learned the lessons of the past and one of us hasnt. There is a saying in my community, youre dipping into the koolaid and you dont even know the flavor. I liked the last one is pretty just imagine this. Anderson, so there are eight more debates, right . And by the time you get to the general election, i mean, you will have heard every single attack. Granted, its coming from largely the left, but, you know, you can imagine that you have lots of practice. Donald trump is not getting debate practice right now. Hes going to show up at a general election debate, you know, i would argue donald trump has plenty of practice attacking people and he will continue attack people right up through the debate. Right. To the point johns about to make, hed never done this before. Hed never done this before. Thats true. And he proved himself pretty good at it. Number one, hes kind of practicing every day. He does it with his fingers on twitter. He practices every day. To what we played there. In the Health Care Exchange with senator harris, i think the former Vice President held his ground. Yes. He tried to make the point for his Health Care Plan. Have a public option buyin, dont have this giant disruptive to your point about senator harris, she should have learned this from her prosecution of him in the first debate, she still refuses as senator sanders and warren had the courage to do last night to look the camera in the eye and say, yes, yes, my Health Care Plan takes away. If you get it from your employer, you lose it. She doesnt want to say that. She does have private insurance. This Medicare Advantage plan, but if you get it from your employer and you have different options, her plan takes it away and she doesnt want to say that. She wants to find some other way to sort of talk around it. Her Campaign Motto is speak truth. Well, the truth is her plan takes that away and she doesnt want to talk about it. Back to the Vice President. Some of those exchanges he was okay. To davids point, bidens strength here is if he is to convince democrats you want me to go up against donald trump because i will defend the obama record and also get the scrappy kid from scranton, the blue collar guys. Macomb county, michigan will come back to me. He doesnt get back to the narrative. Its a tactical back and forth. Watch warren last night. When they same apt ht her, she. She makes her point and get it is back to why are we here. He was muddying it up. Again, he came down to their level. I found to fascinating that it seems like the democrats when theyre in a corner they have adopted a new its basic lir their republican version of thats fake news and thats is thats a republican talking point. Thats right. Which in some cases, yeah, those are republican talking points. In some cases theyre actual facts. Its a democratic voter talking point. Right. And, by the way, even if it is a republican talking point, youre going to be debating a republican and if you cant answer one thing i wanted to note about those clips. We talk about cory booker. You know, i disagree with you slightly, van. I know democrats want someone who is Strong Enough to go up against donald trump, but the question is how you go up against donald trump. And i think the answer is probably jiujitsu. You turn his negative energy against him. What you saw there was booker. He never seemed like he was on the attack. Yeah. He was responding the happy warrior. Responding in stride. Most of the time he was summoning democrats to larger themes. And i think he more than anyone was carrying a narrative tonight that has real potential for democrats. Doesnt mean hes going to be the nominee. We expected booker to go negative because he had been negative for the last week or two about joe biden. And he had been on the attack. And what he did was when he got to the stage it was sort of like, well, ive said all of that and im not going to do that anymore. Im going to let Kamala Harris attack him on the bussing and the dealing with segregationists, which she did. So he benefitted himself cory booker and Elizabeth Warren both seem to get excited when they get challenged, and that is a really, really strong suit for somebody who is going to take on donald trump. Because theyre going to get challenged a whole lot. Both of them seem to feed off it. One thing we keep saying about donald trump, when we get into the general election, folks, dont forget it is this man who has destroyed health care in this country. Hes taken away the individual mandate. Hes brought confusion to the insurance market. Prices have gone up all over the country. Policies in virginia have gone up 62 . We will have a lot to hit donald trump on. Thats the speech you would have given if you were a candidate. Nobody did it tonight, though. They should. Dont forget why were in this mess. The other thing id say on health care. We got to figure out where we are by the time we get to the general. It was mindnumbing tonight. And i follow this. But for most americans, they tuned out. You know im sorry. One person that we havent talked about who was very, very deft all night was castro. Yeah. I dont want to lose that. Part of what you had with him he was a lot tonight the way mayor pete was last night. But better. But better. He was able to kind of seem pragmatic, get the lines in, tells story and escape unscathed. And i think that his ability to i think he will be back. I think castro, i think he bought himself a new lifeline. I also think that unrecognized the social movements in this party had a victory tonight. Yes, the did. Black lives mater had a victory tonight. Were talking about criminal justice. The me too movement had a victory. Gillibrand i think was incredible tonight prosecuting the case and making the argument for women being at the center, mops being at the center. In a way i thought that was very, very appealing. Occupy wall street. Oh, those kids are crazy. The environmental movement. The environmental movement. You have a party that has been remade from the bottom by social movements. I want to give credit to people out there who have been clicktavists. This party is responding to social moments in a beautiful way. On the health care issue, terry, in addition to what you said. Gloria said when we were watching the debate virtually no mention of preexisting conditions. Right. That was the thing that democrats ran on yeah. In the last fall, and thats one of the thats the main reason why many of these democrats right. This was the key vulnerability for republicans and you didnt hear anybody hammering it tonight. You have a president of the United States who is suing right now. In court right now. To end those protections. And that was a missed opportunity. Dont forget what president obama said. The entire battle for the aca, if you like your Health Care Plan, you get to keep it. Now you dont. Well, thats going to be the issue. We got to thats what you were saying. You, democrats, have to figure out a way to simplify this again. Right. Because everybodys confused. Okay. Medicare for all f. What does that mean . Joe biden, well, if they tell you you get to keep it for the next ten years. Then what . People dont want to hear that. One other thing, where was the middle class in this debate . Did you hear anyone talk about defending the middle class. Lets quickly go to chris cuomo for more perspective on what occurred tonight. Chris . Hey, how are you doing, bud . Thanks. Two quality people with me. Cnn political director David Chalian and usa columnist and cnn political analyst kirsten powers. Great to have you both. Again, were having our own conversation while theyre having their conversation. Thats what the nations doing. So lets pull the curtain back a little bit. You study the numbers. You study the metrics. You know who has to do what and when. Tonight was the when. What did you see on that stage tonight in terms of who did what they needed to do. Well, joe biden first and foremost did what he needed to do, which was survive, right . That was the biggest thing he had to prove tonight. He knew he was going to take all the incoming and he had to show he could take it. I think he certainly did that. That is not the same thing saying joe biden won the debate tonight, joe biden secured his path to the nomination tonight. I still think hes going to have to trudge through this process. There is no doubt about that. But what he did was show up in a way that showed democratic voters he can take it, stand there, dish some back and survive this kind of battle. That was after the miami lackluster performance, that was Mission Critical for him and he did that. I dont know how much he propelled his candidacy as much as kept his ability to stay in this race in the positions. If you had to bet me a bagel, whose number would pop after tonight . Well, if i had to bet you a bagel. I try not to bet, especially the future. Technically its the past. It already happened. So feel better about it. Cory booker i would bet raises more money in the next 24 hours than in any other 24hour period of his campaign. Ill take it. I think he had a really successful night. Ill take it. Lets offer some different takes, kirsten, you and i. Lets start with booker. You say he had a good night. We heard it on the other set as well. Ill take the other side because his big moment i think he was the happy warrior. Thats good for him. Where i disagree, i dont think he was completely honest in his answer with joe biden. The whole koolaid, he didnt know the flavor either. The aclu came after him while he was mayor because his police force was being unjust. Three years into it they settled the case. Thats when he came up with the recommendations that they liked. So it wasnt just that they liked his job. They sued him for the job he was doing. Does it matter . You know, thats the case that joe biden should have made, right . Because that didnt happen on the stage. So he was spinning, i would say. You call it lying. I call it spinning. Massaging. I would say he wasnt completely honest. He was massaging the facts in his favor. Joe biden went in and made an attack. He should have been able to make that argument. I think for people who are watching, cory won that exchanges. And i thanksgiving that cory came across not just that he was pushing back but doing it in a very happy warrior way. Yes. Did he win as soon as biden attacked him to axs point about my father, only in the movies did the cowboys shoot backwards. Biden shouldnt have gone after him on a granular level. Biden shouldnt have gone after him. He was basically counterattacking because corys been criticizing him, right . But thats not really an answer. Biden has a pretty easy answer to what hes being accused of in terms of the things that have happened in the past with the crime bill. This is not something that just joe biden came up with. This is something that people in the cbc supported. The congressional black caucus. Yes. Look, it ended up being a very terrible decision, but a lot of people made a terrible decision and he should just say that. It was a mistake. A lot of people we were wrong. We were trying to do the right thing. We made a mistake. Instead he goes on the attack against cory and doesnt have all the facts to hold him accountable the way that you could have. Thats why they dont come on the show. He is going to come on with eastern. The good thing is we dont necessarily agree with all the assessments on the other said. It will be a robust conversation. Lets take a break right now. When we come back, Anderson Cooper is with senator cory booker. People are talking a lot about him tonight. Lets see how he does in the interview next.
