CNNW CNN Newsroom Live April 4, 2020

Doing it but also ahead at this hour, conspiracy theories, bad information, deflection. The dangerous game some Media Outlets are playing. Plus, after a harrowing quarantine in india, shes back in the uk and ready to join the front lines as a doctor. Miss england 2019 will join us. Live from cnn World Headquarters in atlanta. Yes, some of us are still here. Welcome to our viewers in the u. S. And around the world, im Natalie Allen and this is cnn newsroom. It is 5 00 a. M. Here on the u. S. East coast and many of us all have to wonder how bad will it be today. Friday was the deadliest day yet for coronavirus in the u. S. , well over 1,100 deaths were reported. Nearly 280,000 people, more than 250,000 people have tested positive here in the u. S. The happened spread of the disease has led to stayathome orders for some 96 of the population. But the governors of eight states still dont think it is necessary. Now, u. S. Health officials are telling everyone to wear a face mask in public. Thats new. But people looking to the u. S. President to set an example, well, mr. Trump says he wont be wearing one. I just dont want to wear one myself. Its a recommendation. They recommend it. Im feeling good. I wont be doing it, personally. Its a recommendation. Of course, new york is getting the worst of it, with more than 100,000 confirmed cases. It accounts for more than a third of all cases in the u. S. The surging number of patients is quickly draining resources. Emergency field hospitals such as this one in central park, yes, set up in central park, could reach capacity within days. Officials fear new york city will run out of ventilators next week. So the governor is sending out the National Guard to round up as many as they can, anywhere they can find them in the state. One new york nurse tells cnn, compared to last week, the patients are sicker, and that tends to happen with the virus that thats this vicious. A view echoed by another doctor as she spoke with cnns don lemon. Working right now is unlike anything ive ever imagined. Things are totally chaotic. Patients are sicker and dying at higher rates than ive ever seen before and were running out of basic supplies. Weve been talking about the lack of protective equipment. But actually what people dont know, were running out of everything. Last shift i worked at i was told there are 15 oxygen masks left in the hospital where we have over 1,000 patients with the coronavirus. New yorks Police Department has been especially hard hit. More than 1600 uniformed officers and 220 civilian employees have been infected. Eight officers have now died. But there are brief moments of light. New york city firefighters, sirens blaring, saluting the heroic men and women on the hospital front lines. Across the united states, officials at the state and local level are taking on the crisis with whatever powers they have. Erica hill has that for us. Am i willing to deploy the National Guard and inconvenient people for several hundred lives . Youre damn right i am. Reporter on the heels of the highest single day increase of deaths and hospitalizations in new york, Governor Andrew Cuomo announcing an executive order to move desperately needed quilt around his state. The burn rate is about 300 ventilators per day. If you find 300 excess ventilators, you found another day. Reporter this, as the mayor at the epicenter warns critical supplies may not last through monday. And is calling for a nationwide enlistment of doctors. If theres not action by the president or the military literally in a matter of days to put into motion this vast mobilization, they are going to see first hundreds and later thousands of americans die who did not need to die. Reporter but there are beds, many of them still unused. The Navy Hospital ship comfort has room for 2500 patients. The pentagon making similar changes to facilities in new orleans and dallas. Its giving me a quick check. Reporter 34 Covid Patients are being treated at the field hops in new yorks central park. Four in the icu. A doctor there telling cnn the cases are more severe than he expected. At least 94 of the country is under a stayathome order. Dr. Anthony fauci making the case for a nationwide mandate. If you look at whats going on in this country, i just dont understand why were not doing that. We really should be. Reporter yet in florida, confusing orders from the governor, who says religious services all in subject to social distancing rules leaving local officials scrambling. This is not only undermining our ability to implement social distancing here, its really undermining the sacrifices that millions of floridians have been making across the state for the past couple of weeks. Everyone needs to at right now at this moment act like you have it and thank god you that dont. Reporter in california, 71 infections and one death have been linked to a single church. Raising concerns whats to come this weekend. In cities across the country, americans being told to cover their face if they must leave the house. Schools are closed and in new jersey which has the second highest cases in the country flags being lowered to half staff. Since families at this time cannot even hold funerals for their lost loved ones, this is a way, a small way, but i think an important way we can make sure that their loss is not forgotten. Reporter Governor Cuomo also making the case today that what happens in new york is going to be needed across the country and that new york stands ready to help. Mayor bill de blasio writing an o op ed in the New York Times saying, and i quote, if other cities like new york dont have the help, other cities wont. And now the new guideline that everyone wear cloth masks while in public. There are a few important points to do doing that, and we learn about it from our dr. Sanjay gupta. You may be asking why do i have to wear a mask. Heres the thinking, theres this sort of idea even if you dont have any symptoms if youre asymptomatic as youve heard the term now, youre not causing or sneezing, you could still harbor the virus in your nose and your mouth. And you could still spread the virus that way. That is what asymptomatic spread is. Why wearing a mask, even a cloth mask like this, youre actually decreasing the amount of virus you put out into the environment. So when you wear a mask in public that is to protect other people, not to protect yourself necessarily. So, thats an important point that that i want to make sure people understand. The other thing, again, it goes without saying that the first recommendation is to stay home. I mean, this is still about social distancing. Lets talk about that with our guest diana bell, an expert on emerging Infectious Diseases with the university of east englangia. She joins me, we were told to wear a mask and before we were told not to. Why the change now . Well, i think thats a sensible recommendation. Ive been reading the literature, everything coming out on this. I know theres some compelling evidence yesterday. Interestingly, we havent gotten the same recommendation come in the uk. But ive got masks. And i will be wearing them, when i go to visit the market. I think they are sensible, because this is we heard about washing hands, but this is aeroso aerosolborne. Right. And we heard from dr. Fauci this week that just breathing could be at risk, not just sneezing and coughing. President trump, unfortunately, stressing that hes not going to do it. But i want to talk to you about the federal government for a moment. The Trump White House has been at odds with state leaders pleading for more coordinated row burst federal response. Health workers are just trying to save others the best they can, while they dont have this support, how much do you think that disconnect has affected what were seeing right now in the u. S. . I think this problem isnt only in the u. S. Its happened in the uk. And a number of other countries. But i think but, you know, the message is that we all have to work together, both within countries and between countries, we saw china sending masks, and indeed, doctors to italy. Russia sending ventilators to spain. Really people have to be working together, the private sector, has been working with the Public Sector which is happening here in the uk. There has to be various obstacles to jump over, but i dont understand. There must be political barrier, rather than religious barriers. And, diana, theres no real data on testing either. I dont know about in the uk, but especially here in the u. S. We dont though if much testing is going on. Most tests that went on were back in midmarch. Doesnt that mean its kind of impossible to know what areas are in jeopardy and every minute is lives lost, when data isnt being tracked . Youre absolutely right. The w. H. O. Has been telling us now for weeks, test, test, test. And we havent been doing that. And, so, countries that have been doing that like south korea, their numbers are low. And also, theyve been tracking positive cases and their contacts. A lot of Contact Tracing as has happened in vietnam. So, other countries have done far better than we have. So, here, theres been in uk, theres been a discussion about getting it right. The message is that a wrong test is worse than no test. I completely agree with that. But weve had weeks, weve had weeks, china put up the flag and said, this is whats happening, run from us. And we have had weeks to prepare. We havent been. And its only by testing that well get some idea of the real scale. We dont know what it is in the uk. Im sure our number of positives is far higher. And its only the mortality cases that we can rely on. Diana bell, we appreciate you joining us. Thank you so much for your insight. Im sorry for whats happening in america. Thank you so much and likewise there. Another story were following from washington but not about the coronavirus. The Inspector General from the u. S. Intelligence community is now out of a job. Late friday night, President Trump sent a letter informing congress which was obtained by cnn. Michael atkinson is a nonpartisan career official. Its customarily spent visiting the graves of ancestors, even burning paper or money as an offering to their spirits. The nurse who became a symbol in italys fight against the coronavirus says she is helping and ready to return to work. How about that. You may recall this photo here of Elena Pagliarini head down and exhausted after her time on the front lines. Shes now won her battle against the virus after a 23day struggle. However, many of her colleagues were not so lucky. At least 73 doctors and 24 nurses are among the dead in italy. But there is a sign of hope. The government says the latest number show the increase in infection sz stabs is stabilizi. Lets go to Barbie Nadeau. Barbie, its a sign that the curve may be flattening. What can you tell justice. Thats right, one that curve is flattening, we see the curve down go, the cases begin to decrease. Were in the fourth week of this draconian lockdown and its really taking its toll. See that in the south where there arent as many cases, but the economic pressure is building there. Weve got police on the streets of palermo, worried about crime and exploiting the situation. As long as the country stays on lockdown, its not focused in the north where the Virus Outbreak has been so strong. Its nationwide issue and the authorities recognize how hard it is for so many people. Right, weve did have a heartening story in the last hour, our ben wedeman, talking about the doctors and nurses volunteering to come back, when you think about the risks they take to save peoples lives. Its really remarkable. It really is. We saw so many people call to answer the call for volunteers. You do see a National Unity here in this country. People arent really suffering for the dead, they suffering that people have lost their families. They cant have funerals. They cant say farewell. All of these things play into the whole situation, in all of europe, but especially here in italy, where weve seen the epicenter of the cases. But people are hopeful. And i think thats what the message is. The lockdown seems to be working. If we can just stick it out a little longer, everybody who lives in this country making their own economic and personal sacrifices. Then, perhaps, well be the ones to lead everyone out of here in europe, natalie. Well be looking for that, Barbie Nadeau in rome. The origins of the coronavirus remain a mystery, but while cases were only detected several months ago, a new Study Suggests it may have been circulating in humans for years. And as cnns Nick Paton Walsh reports this virus looks a lot like something weve seen before. Last night, 32 cases. Reporter you feel you wake up every day in a movie. Probably its contagion that never imagined our world. An epidemiologist, he was assigned to be an adviser to the movie but midmarch tested positive for covid19. The first couple days, you feel like an elephant is sitting on your chest. I was in china the second half of january, placed in isolation. I became ill in the streets of new york. Reporter pandemic, a movie, hes one of many scientists with something very really to save the day about where the virus came from. A dominant theory that left from its current dangerous form from animals, maybe a ballot, into humans late last year is being questioned. A recent study in make medicine magazine say it may have happened months or years ago. And that the virus circulated less lethally in humans and adapted to be more infectious to them before becoming the monster that it is now. I think it probably circulated in humans for some time. How long, we may never fully reconstruct that . What people try to do is use genetic evidence to look at the time of the most recent common ancestors examining im sorry, my cough is already contagious as you can see, it could have been circulating for months or years. Reporter before we hear from the author of a state, heres kate winslet telling you how to wash your hands. Water doesnt need to be that hot. Any soap will do. Reporter the professor wrote in his study that the virus could have been in humans for years. We start getting behind this, surely only took place a few months ago. There could have been, you know, other sparks that were set up and made smaller fires and we just didnt detect it. There are certain coronaviruses we know about. Some of the milder ones that circulated for decades
