Here in the United States the death toll topped to 40,000 mark today and it is continuing to rise that is doubled by the number of fatalities one week ago. 750,000 americans are infected. The country continue to face major setbacks on testing. Virus testing kits cant be used and being recalled. State Health Officials say they are contaminated. Frustration with social distancing and rules are growing across the country. Protests popping up in places like california and texas, maryland and wisconsin. These demonstrations could lead
to a spike of investigatifectior social distancing rules to stay in place. There is a glimmer of hope in new york. Governor cuomo reporting that the total hospitalizations are down although the battle has not been won yet. If the data holds and this trend holds, we are passed the high point and all indication that we are on a descend. Whether it continues depends on what we do. Joining us now the Emergency Room Physician room at whharvar medical school. And with us the associate of emergency medicine, dr. Shu. The president now says they are now using a defense production
act to produce those testing swabs which are so critical in all of these tests. What do you make of it . I am glad to hear that. It is grass root voices and efforts that have been driving that demand. In some ways i cant believe we are just Getting Started with that. Dr. Fauci wrote an oped talking about how we needed widespread and routine testing in order to not be flying the dark but regards to this disease. We cant emerge from this unless we have that kind of testing. Certainly glad to hear it and cant wait to see it. Why is it so complicated to get the right right equipment for these tests and these swabs. That would be relatively easy to produce. You would think so. The one thing you need is lead
time. We have been caught flat footed over and over again. It is way too late. We need to have testings. I am worried about opening up the economy without adequate testings. Thats a situation thatll lead to a second peak, it could be devastating and the economy. Do you agree with that dr. Choo . Yes. There is as real danger here, you are making decisions in the absence of testings, you are making the decision based on incomplete data. Ings in place ae start making decisions of opening up because we have in advocate te inadequate testing. Mayor de blasio says the cases are going up. What could be the reason for rise in hospitalizations that we are seeing right now . Well, one of the things we are learning of this virus is that there is a long lag time between infectiousns and sympto and urgent care. And then what happens is you have an influx in the hospital two weeks later when you thought you are in the clear and as dr. Choo predicted, you have a ppe problem. The White House Task force is getting onto this. Hey, this is coming down the pipe in a week or two and not tomorrow. If we do it that way. We are in nimble and thats how you get ahead of things and not waiting for the problem to
become real is to see it coming down the pipe. Dr. Choo at the same time some states are actually looking to reopen their economy as soon as early may and some easing restrictions on public movement, do you worry about that and could that lead to potential a spike in cases . This is terrifying and it is keeping everybody on healthcare side awake at night. There is a little delay when we are asymptomatic and running around and passing it to each other and illnesses and deaths come later. It could feel good for a short time and it could be validatein to go out there and back to business and well see the delay waived and well pay for it lat later. All of us want to go ut. I am going wild inside with my kids. There are four of them. I would like for nothing more for things to open backup. There is a reason we are not doing this and we are advising against it because science is dictating that if we do that it could mean loss of lives here. Can life return back to some sense of normality here without a vaccine . Without a vaccine, thats a Million Dollar question and unfortunately well have to see how it works out before we have that ravaccine. Opening up now is great news if you are the virus that causes this disease and terrible news if you are a human being trying to survive this pandemic. We know this disease can be spread by asymptomatic people. One out of four or five americans have this virus. That sounds a lot. I am worried that they feel oh okay it is time to get out and feels good but you go out and interact with hundred of people and the virus comes to you. You may be fine but you may be giving it to someone that wont be. It is not about federal government verses the states or governors verses people. It is about human verses the virus. Thats the line in the sand, which side are you on . What about that, dr. Choo . If wills tlas if there is as var from now, there will be some treatments dealing with the coronavirus in the short term or maybe in a month or two months down the road, is that right . We are doing science faster than you would imagine. I am mostly on the research side, although i do practice clinically, you do not believe how quickly we are getting these Clinical Trials up and running. It is with breathtaking speeds. people to wait and hold on when they want answers and treatments now but over the next few months well have answers and well figure out if we have effective treatments and what they are and what doses we should be giving them and what stage and the disease. More on the coronavirus pandemic. The white house announced major part of the reopening strategy will rely on whats called Contact Tracing. Thats a way for officials to
investigate where coronavirus patients have traveled and determine who may have been exposed. Sarah sidner reports live. This tracing is critical to avoid a surge in some cases. boss and staff have to be contacted, she went to a hair salon, they have to be contacted and she went to a game. All family members or friends have to be contacted. Reporter from those suffering in new york to those connected to the first major new york outbreak in Washington State to california. The reality is not everything can be addressed by telehealth and maybe a woman that needs surgery for Breast Cancer or somebody who has cataracts this thein their eye that needs to see the doctor. Many Healthcare Systems are furloughing their staffs, nurses the doctors. Under the president s leadership we put out 90 billion under the Medicare Program provided 30 billion of grants with more dollars on the way. Thanks to the American People we are in a much different place. You heard from the Vice President that there are many places around the country where they are seeing a decline in cases. Hospitals are reporting that they have unused capacity. And so as part of our opening up america, we are issuing guidelines today about how we can reopen the Healthcare Systems. These are recommendations around phase one. Every state and local official have to assess the situation on the ground. They need make sure they have adequate supplies and a plan for conserving supplies. They need to be able to screen patients and healthcare workers for covid19 virus. They need to make sure patients feel safe when they come into Seek Healthcare Services by assuring that i have the appropriate cleaning in place and they observe social distancing inside the healthcare facilities. This is not a light switch, it is a sun rise, it is a gradual process and healthcare officials
need to decide what services should be made available. Doctors and patients need to make decisions about their healthcare services. We want to make sure systems are reopening so that they kanako sat can stay reopen. I want to thank all the healthcare members and serving liaison and they have done a fantastic job and we owe a depth of gratitude to them. And all our providers, they did the right thing and made extraordinary difference. Also, i want to take a couple seconds to talk about our Nursing Homes. Our hearts and minds are with the patients and the families of those living in Nursing Homes. This is an extraordinary difficult situation. People living in Nursing Homes are of the most vulnerable patients and elderly many of them have under line health
conditions. This has been a hard situation and i really appreciate the strong efforts of governors and local communities that have shown great leadership from supporting Nursing Homes across the country particularly governor baker and Governor Hogan that have had special efforts in supporting Nursing Homes. Fema is working on a plan to make sure Nursing Homes have the supplies they need. Last week we increase the reimbursement and the Medicare Program for tests and we are paying for labs to go out to Nursing Homes to collect examples. Thats supporting Nursing Homes and in order to isolate patients. Under the president s leadership an effort around nursing home transparency. It is important that patients and their families have the information that they need and they need to understand whats going on in the nursing home. We are announcing that we are
requiring Nursing Homes to report to patients and their families if there are cases of coronavirus inside Nursing Homes. We require Nursing Homes to report to the cdc directly when they have cases of coronavirus. As we are opened, our surveillance of covid19 will begin around Nursing Homes. So again i want to thank all of the local officials that have done an amazing job in supporting the Nursing Homes and i am going to urge all states and local leaders to follow their lead and do everything we can to keep nursing home residents safe.
