CNNW CNN Newsroom With Brooke Baldwin May 31, 2018

Charges and it begs the question what kind of message the president is trying to send and, more importantly, who does he hope is listening. With me dana bausch a bash an walter schaub. Remind us who is Dinesh Dsouza. He is a well known conservative writer. He was convicted and admitted to making up names in order to give more money than was legally allowed to a Republican Senate candidate in the state of new york. He violated Campaign Finance laws in a pretty brazen way. He was, as i said, convicted. He didnt serve time but he has that very big blemish on his record and, more importantly, because of that he couldnt vote. He did not vote in 2016. So this is obviously a very important cause to a lot of conservatives. Apparently ted cruz is among those who have been asking the president to either commute a sentence or pardon and he decided to do that today. Now, the question that you asked is about the politics and about the message sending. Its hard not to see a message in not just this, meaning hes somebody who is on his side, he is somebody who speaks up for conservative causes in a very big way but then also doubling and tripling down, playing with the press and others by saying maybe Martha Stewart and rob blagojevich, too. Theres a whole bunch of history with those two in and around the district, the court, that ended up at least for Martha Stewart that ended up putting her in jail. And theres also a history with the prosecutor who put Rod Blagojevich in jail. It just so happens that hes james comeys lawyer now. Are there coincidences here . Hard to see. Question mark. To one of danas great points, walter schaub, do you think taking the one concrete part that we have about Dinesh Dsouza versus a Michael Cohen and a Michael Flynn . There have been bad pardons before, but usually if a president was going to issue a questionable pardon, its at the end of the term of the president as theyre walking out the door. Pardoning him now is sort of a brazen act that sends a message that hes going to intervene and issue pardons basically on his own whim. This one didnt go through the department of justices formalized process for reviewing pardons. It involved Campaign Finance violations, which is something cohen might be under investigation for and may be facing some legal jeopardy for. And so it just sends a message that the president is going to act outside the normal bounds of how we go about giving these kind of pardons and i read it as a signal, stay loyal, ill take care of you. Exactly. You had this great tweet about nixon and his henchmen. How did you relate that to this . What i said is that a president clearly is not above the law, but a president has the power to place his henchmen above the law. Imagine if Richard Nixon had been sitting around waiting in the white house with a stack of pardons for the plumbers who broke into the Watergate Hotels who come back and collect their pardons specifically to dispatch their crimes . Thats a scenario that never happened but were moving closer to that in this current environment. Thats potentially one part of it but the other message the president could be sending and i dont think its a stretch to think that its even more probable than possible, is people like you mentioned, brooke, paul manafort, Michael Flynn, rick gates, who have the potential to spill whatever it is they potentially have to Robert Mueller or federal investigators in general, Michael Cohen even, federal investigators in general, if they get to lower their sentence if they give information. The message here seems to be im not its easy for me, im not unwilling to use the power of my pardon. So take whatever you get in terms of a sentence, just keep your mouth shut because youll be fine because im the president. And also whats the message, walter, hes sending to the d. O. J. . You mentioned a second ago hes not even going through the department of justice and i had a guest last hour say flat out hes undermining them. He is. The department of justice has every specific standards for what pardon recommends. Hes outside of those. Theres a common theme here in at least some of the pardons he talking about, today the idea of Martha Stewart and Rod Blagojevich and joe arpaio are ones where its undermining the system. These are corruptors. Youve got Rod Blagojevich soliciting bribes, Martha Stewart engaging in insider tradi trading, joe arpaio, ignoring court orders and Dinesh Dsouza, violating Campaign Finance laws. All of these have corrupting and corroding influences on a society. That seems consistent with the assault on our institutions that the president has launched and for which his campaign is under investigation. One more, dana, to you separate from the pardons tell me about your new reporting on Rudy Giuliani and how hes defending this Conspiracy Theory that the president continues to push with zero evidence that the fbi put this spy in his campaign. A couple things. One, he continues to say what were hearing more and more from the president s allies in the house of representatives, which is this briefing that trey gowdy and other leaders in the house and the senate got about this confidential source was not enough, that they just were told about the information, they didnt actually get to look at documents. So thats the new front or the current front in that battle. But on a personal level, the comments by trey gowdy, who was one of those who was briefed, who came out of course earlier this week and just basically tried to blow up this notion of this Conspiracy Theory that this was a spy in the Trump Campaign saying that he didnt see anything that was not going by the book by the fbi, giuliani, i spoke to him this afternoon, is really lashing out at trey gowdy, saying that he drank the koolaid. He also went after gowdy for the way gowdy handled the benghazi investigation. He said i never understood what he did with the benghazi investigation either. He really screwed that up. I dont know what he was doing. So its personal. I should also tell you that gowdys office declined to comment. But this is personal and this is an intra republican fight showing, a, theyre not backing down, and b, not happy that trey gowdy is trying to come out and say this is not real, the fbi did nothing wrong, trust me, i looked at it. Thank you very much. Lets get back to samantha bee. She is now apologizing for using offensive language doing a bit on her show where she targeted ivanka trump. What she said is outrageous and unacceptable. Ivanka trump who lives at the white house chose to post the second most oblivious tweet weve seen this week. Thats a beautiful photo of you and your child but let me just say one mother to another, do something about your dads immigration practices, you feckless [ bleep ]. He listens to you put on something tight and low cut and tell your father to [ bleep ] stop it. Moments ago samantha bee tweeted i would like to sincerely apologize to ivanka trump and to my viewers for using an expletive on my show to describe her last night. It is inappropriate and inexcusable. Tbs said samantha bee has taken the right action in apologizing for the vile and inappropriate action. Those word should not have been aired. It was our mistake, too, and we regret it. Ill spare you the details, what she said is so wrong on so many levels. Shes apologized for it. Especially just as a woman, using that word, what did you think . I think its terrible and i think that hollywood is the most hypocritical group of people ever. Weve seen it over and over again. And for her to be so not aware to do this right in the light of roseanne, im guessing i dont know when it was taped. So maybe it hadnt come out. Im guessing the roseanne thing had happened and then this show came out or at least she would have known to maybe cut that part out or something. Why would the roseanne thing even matter . But make yourself even that much more aware. The timing makes it worse but if youre going to all go and attack her for what shes done and said, you think youd be a little more conscious of now what youre going to say about not only anyone in the world but a female. So she said a really awful thing about another mother, a female and what kind of bothered me about the thing leading up before the c word is that she was mad that ivanka had posted a photo with her and her child on instagram in light of whats going on. Im sorry, everyone uses instagram. If i show my child winning an award at school and that day there happens to be a huge tragedy at another school, am i huge jerk for doing that . Is she not allowed for a lot of people jumped on her this week. I hear you loud and clear. Where do you draw the line when were all using social media to further our careers . Its very hard to say whats wrong or right or what to post or not . I have to say its unacceptable. As a man i dont know the rules of the c word, i gs it like t n word, i get to say it but you dont . I think thats something we need to stop doing. I dont think its cool. I dont think its funny. We wouldnt like it if a man called us the b word. I dont see it as much with the c word but the b word is just as rude. For transparency sake my friends and i call each other the b word all the time. Im just saying. To your point the show is taped. When you watch samantha bee, they had it on tape, they had it for five or six hours. You guys work on shows. The writers, producers on the one hand you could, if this were like a live comment, you could actually claim it was an excited utterance. I got caught up in the moment and i said something and i shouldnt have said it. However, this is a scripted show and you and i both know that comedy writers and the way comedy happens on a show, it is very meticulous the way they chronicle everything thats going to come out of the hosts mouth. Sometimes you do have an ad lib. Whether or not it was an ad lib, we dont know. Mostly likely it wasnt and the had an opportunity to go through it. And then the final person at tbs has to say okay. It shouldnt have happened. It shouldnt have happened. Im waiting to see if she address it is on her own show. Are you really apologizing . Youve said awful things this whole time. Im sorry you said one step further. Im a mom who is the main supporter of my family, i dont ant to lose my job the way roseanne did. The whole thing is you have to be careful. You have to be careful. Words matter. Just words matter. Secondly, thinking of words mattering, the cover of the New York Post today, we know Kim Kardashian went to the white house yesterday petitioning for prison reform. If you look at the cover, the other big ass summit, trump meets rump. I cant believe the New York Times is making me do this but im going to do it. Im going to defend Kim Kardashian on national television. I cant believe this. That is wrong. Kim kardashian is doing a good thing. Anyone who is incarcerated for life for a nonviolent drug offense is a travesty and a miscarriage of justice to say the least. The fact that she is trying to do anything about this is a good thing and she should not be mocked and ridiculed. Kim kardashian did a good thing. But heres the thing. Oh god, oh god people are so upset about this. Again, the hypocrisy. Look how many hollywood stars had meeting after meeting after meeting with obama that they did not have formal education in. Its not about the meeting. Its the rump. Hello. That is very rude. Yes. But im saying the outrage that she even had this meeting, what does she know about it . Again, you have a hundred million, whatever it is, followers. If you can get some action behind something good, you should be able to do it. He is in office for the next couple of years so try to make it happen. She is a 37, 38yearold mother of three, huge business owner. So to always constantly going back to that, she can evolve and try and do things that are good for people. Absolutely. Its unfortunate that were living in a time where the default reaction to everything is to divide, get into camps and attack. But that somehow is where we are. We got to fix that. You guys can help us with that. Chuck and heather, nice to see both of you guys in person. Coming up next, north koreas former top spy son his on his w right now to hand deliver a letter to President Trump. Soil, the first, by the way, in like 17 years, despite his waiver to get to meet President Trump in person. Moments ago secretary of state mike pompeo says he still does not know if President Trump will meet north koreas dictator in person but pompeo said, quote, Real Progress has been made in his meeting with a north korean official, who was once pyongyangs top spy. The effort now is to come to a set of understandings which convince the North Koreans of what President Trump has said. If were able to achieve it, if the North Koreans are prepared, in fact, to denukize denucleari convince them that in fact their security is greater and the real threat of their security is the holding on to the Nuclear Weapons program and not the conver converse. With me now, lindsey forward, director of Political Affairs and adviser at the defense department. Nice to see you. Thanks so much. This north korean exspy, chief, is set to meet with President Trump tomorrow in the white house. What could be in this letter and how significant is this moment . Its extremely significant. You have to look at this as this is the opportunity for the no kidding, is there enough there that we can really move ahead with this summit . Have we found a way to bridge the gaps between us to make this worth our time, and youll know this because this is the direct response from kim jong un to the president. And ultimately those are the two people who have to make that decision. I think the good news coming out of the meeting today with secretary of state pompeo, his tone was realistic. He was positive that theyd made progress but he was also honest in acknowledging theres a lot of hurdles to overcome here. This is not an easy process. Even the president was slightly more circumspect than weve heard him at times. There was no talk of huge, historic deals of all time, it was hey, maybe we can do this, maybe we wont, maybe it will even take a couple meetings. I think acknowledging the recognition that this was going to be harder and probably slower than he originally anticipated. And so i think the thing that you need to focus on ultimately, what you really want to come out of this meeting with is some sort of top cover statement of principles that broadly we all agree that its worth our time to move forward and were going to set up a process. Thats actually when the hard work begins, right . Thats actually when you get to where we were with iran where you have the technical experts and the diplomats spending gree gears, hashing out the real terms of an agreement. And thats what will be tricky. Lindsey ford, thank you very much. Coming up next, actress and activist rosie perez makes this emotional plea for americans to wake up, wake up to the tragedy still unfolding in puerto rico right now, eight months after Dinesh Dsouza. The 2018 Hurricane Season begins tomorrow, eight months after Hurricane Maria devastated the u. S. Territory of puerto rico, so many communities are still in recovery mode. A harvard study just revealed the islands estimated death toll from the storm is 70 times higher than the governments official count. There are more than 4,600 dea s deaths, they say, compared to the official death toll of 64. The study points out people are not getting key Services Like electricity, medical attention and critics have blasted response saying the government, federal and local, are not doing enough. And rosie perez, a proud puerto rican american, welcome back. Thank you and thank you so much for having me back on your show. This is a very important show. It broke my heart that Roseanne Barr was the topic of social media and not the 4,600 deaths in puerto rico. You know, it begs the question who are we as americans . What ary becoming as americans, that we do not concentrate on our fellow americans who are suffering, suffering endlessly in puerto rico and, as you stated, tomorrow is Hurricane Season. And the island is not prepared. Officials have been warning the residents of puerto rico to begin to stockpile on supplies that will last them up to ten days or more, just in case a category five hurricane comes and hits. Now, there was 17. 5 billion finally that the federal government has sent down there. 3. 8 billion of that was sent to repair the electrical system, the infrastructure, and its collapsing. And they say that if the hurricane does come, it will 100 collapse and the island will be without power once again. And that was the major reason for the death toll. It was not forgive me. Youre the second person ive talked to in the last 24 hours who said puerto rico is not prepared. Let me just jump in and ask you, when President Trump some months ago when he was down in puerto rico, when he made his way down there after the hurricane, he at the time down played the death toll. Lets remind everyone. Every death is a horror, but if you look at a real catastrophe like katrina and you look at the tremendous hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people that died and you look at what happened here with really a storm that was just totally overpowering, nobodys ever seen anything like this and what is your death count as of this moment . 17 . 16. 16 people certified. 16 people versus in the thousands. You talk about how youre upset this hasnt dominated social media . How about with these new numbers, the president has remained totally silent. To that you say what . He has remained totally silent yet but he is still tweeting about Roseanne Barr. We need to wake up, america. These are our fellow citizens. They are american citizens. These are our neighbors. And were treating them like complete crap. We must take care of them. We have to take care of each other. The moral compass of america is just going down and its so troubling and people are dying because of it. Only 21,000 of federal aid were sent to residents of puerto rico to repair their homes, okay . That is its its disgusting and its painful. I just want everyone just to wake up and start caring, you know. And in saying that, there are americans that do care, you know. I have been working along with my friend ramone rodriguez, the actor and filmmaker, along with heart 9 11, we went down there and we saw the catastrophe. Heart 9 11 has developed an apprentice program, teach a man to fish. Were sending people down there, the carpenters unions are volunteering their time. Were paying for it out of donations of good americans that are going to the web site and sending their dollars there. Were teaching them to build hurricane resistant roofs so they dont have to rely on those blue tarps that really only last for 60 days. So its, you know, i really came on your show not to really complain about that man in the white house. I really came on your show, brooke, to beg americans to please help your fellow americans that are down in puerto rico. Hurricane season starts tomorrow. We need your help. And i just cannot believe that 3. 5 billion spent on infrastructure for the electrical system has not worked. What is it going to take . Do we need to send professionals from our mainland like were doing with heart 9 11 . What needs to happen . Its just mind boggling. I appreciate the candor and the emotion and i hope americans are listening to you. Rosie perez, a pleasure as always. Thank you so very much. Thank you. Also today, look at the dow. It is down, down, down here as the president has announced new tariffs on our allies. Were going to talk about that, as new reports emerge, they threatened to ban all german cars coming into the u. S. , a move that could impact tens of thousands of jobs in this country. And why is it so difficult for the president to condemn racism . Well go there with kamal just ahead. Hear that sizzle . Yeah. Were watching it because the Trump Administration announced major steel and aluminum tariffs today that go into effect on midnight. Canada is already threatening to retaliate. Here is how Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reacted just moments ago. Let me be clear. These tariffs are totally unacceptable. Americans remain our partners, our allies and our friends. This is not about the american people. We have to believe that at some point common sense will prevail. But we see no sign of that in this action today by the u. S. Administration. Catherine, Justin Trudeau, these are the u. S. s good, good friends, allies, trading partners. We were talking a second ago and you were saying maybe the canada and the mexico piece is all part of this nafta negotiation. Right. Its really hard to make heads or tails of what their strategy is because i think they dont really have a strategy. Seems like trump just has this vague sense if we punish other countries sufficiently, theyll come graveling to us and take whatever trade terms we impose upon them. In the case of canada and mexico, were renegotiating nafta, thats with mexico and canada. Maybe trump thinks, hey that, will give us leverage in those negotiations. Hes not thinking several steps ahead in terms of what that means to u. S. Manufacturing. If you raise the price of those inputs, its going to put people out of work potentially in the united states. And youre not thinking forward to how does this affect our military allies, how does this affect our partnerships Going Forward . With the eu, its even more confusing because we are not in the middle of any sort of like major, at least on the same level of nafta, like a major negotiation of trade, though trump has said he wants auto tariffs to go down and things like that. Possibly trump is just obsessed with trade deficits and trade surpluses and we have a big trade deficit. And maybe its about germany and hes trying to get back at germany and it affects all of the countries in the eu. Its so wrong headed on all levels. Youre trying to say maybe this, then this. Its hard to make sense of it. If you look at whats coming out of the president s own trade team, they cant even agree what their objective is. Is it more favorable trade terms, is it fewer barriers to trade . Of course the rest of us will have trouble. On germany, there have been new reports that President Trump has threatened to ban all german imported cars from the u. S. Market. You think about that, thats mercedes, bmw, porsche, i mean, audi, it goes on and on and on. What he may be overlooking is the fact that german automakers employ tens of thousands of americans. What would the impact look like of that . I think it would be very bad for americans, both consumers and workers. A lot of these companies do manufacture in the u. S. Its not clear if the tariff with include german parts. It presumably means that consumers have fewer options because price going to go up pup i think this is very bizarre given that germany is one of our biggest military allies, along with these other members that were targeting. And on cars, not only reports on german cars, a couple of weeks ago trump directed the general of commerce to investigate trade inconsistencies. Thank you very much. The president still has not condemned the racist tweets of roseanne. Thats next. Prevagen is the number one selling brainhealth supplement in drug stores nationwide. Prevagen. The name to remember. I only care for apologizing for the hurt i have caused. I humbly confess remorse. I failed to correctly express myself and caused pain to people. For his part, President Trump has launched new attacks on abc for a double standard in treatment of conservative and liberal voices, but remained silent on Roseanne Barrs racist tweet and despite congratulating her show when it debuted, no word now. With me, the host of united shades of america, it is a treat to talk to you on tv. Before we get to your show, look at this incident with roseanne. Look back to august of last year, charlottesville, where the president referred to very fine people, the delay in disavowing david duke during the president ial campaign. Why do you think it is so hard for the president to speak out against racism . Because i think he knows he would be hypercritical if he spoke out against racism. He has, in his life, done racist things. It is clear, he is not a man who has a moral ground to stand on when it comes to racism. You dont have to go to charlottesville, go to central park five, the Justice Department in 73, you can go back to birtherism. He has no moral ground to stand on when it comes to calling people out for racism and i think he knows that. That doesnt make it okay that he doesnt say anything. It wouldnt explain why he doesnt. What would it mean if he did say anything . If he did say something, we would know he was reading it from a teleprompter, not from his soul. From his soul. He commented on it, but commenting on the point about the double standard and talking about whatever people on abc said about him versus the fact that she has been racist on her twitter feed. Well, making things about him when they are not about him is on brand for President Trump. So, i was not in any way surprised. I was impressed with how he got it to turn into something about him. That was next level trump. This is totally on brand. In the media, we go, when is he going to become the guy we think a president is . Hes not that guy. This is him. This is who we got, yeah america. This is him. Lets talk about you. Congratulations, america. Lets talk about you and your show. This week, you are visiting historically black colleges and universities. Lets look at a glimpse. The main talk when it comes up, theres the talking point of, you know, why do we still have hbcs . How come we dont have White College . If i had a White College that would be racist. Can you speak to that . The anxiety white people have, theres a place black people can access that you cant. Theres something you can do that we cant . White people can go to hbcs. Theres white people walking around. White people have access but they dont want to go to places marked black. Its okay to want those places. You wrote an article that hcb was on the decline. What it means to choose hcbs now versus 50 years ago. Post civil rights, you have a choice to go somewhere else. The decline is connected not to people believing less in hcbs, but the landscape changed. Theres more choices. I believe in black people. There will be hbcus as long as there are black people. Good man. Why do you think they have an Important Role in the 21st century . Mark is a good man. Im not going to have him talk on the show because he was hosting it at that point. When we live in a world where black students and Ivy League Students getting the cops called on her because she was asleep, that makes the argument for hbc. Nobody looks at you as a black person. They are looked at as students in a college. I talked to a lot of students how you feel your individual blackness, not your common blackness with the community. Once you feel it, you are feeling yourself. You get to know what its like to be an individual in the way you dont get that in american society. Sounds like a beautiful thing. Thank you.
