Right course of action. But now today in this fox news interview the president is trying to walk it back and, in fact, claiming that he was somehow misquoted or his words misrepresented. Listen to what he said. They say, oh, he would accept it. Well if i dont listen, youre not going to know. Now if i thought anything was incorrect or badly stated, i would report it to the attorney general, the fbi, id report it to Law Enforcement, absolutely. Reporter and if youre listening closely, youll hear the president adding a new caveat. Hes saying, in fact, have to listen to what this is in the first place in order to know whether it is bad and if it is bad, then you report it to the fbi. So the president may have created even more problems for himself today, pam. By basically saying i would sit down and listen and determine for myself whether this information is derogatory or bad in nature and then i would report it to the fbi. That is simply not what most people believe ought to happen in the situation like this. According to a lot of democrats and even some republicans on capitol hill, the right response to receiving this kind of information or an offer of this kind of information is to immediately notify the fbi. And President Trump is still not saying that as of this morning, even after all of this blowback, pam. Abby phillips, the latest from the white house. I want to bring in sean wu, a defense attorney and cnn legal analyst and also a former lawyer for Trump Campaign deputy rick gates and with us, rachel bait from the Washington Post and a cnn political analyst, thank you both for coming on. First to you, what do you make of the about face today . It is more of the same. The president feels that he is the one that should decide what is right and what is wrong and legal and illegal. So in the face of the blowback where he made a foolish statement admitting to want to do a crime, he said that if it was bad, meaning he should determine if it is bad or not, and really it is a bright line rule and congress should pass a law that would mandate they disclose any contacts. That would take the discretion out of it. But this is very much in line with his view of Law Enforcement. He thinks he knows better than Law Enforcement and that tends to make a very lawless administration. What is interesting, you bring up what congress should do here but the Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell shown unwillingness to take up any bills addressing election interference, according to reporting from manu raju and our hill team, on top of that he was asked about the president s comments and he said he sort of pivoted to democrats and said this is the democrats picking on him. What is going on with Mitch Mcconnell . What is his strategy here . Yeah, i mean, obviously mcconnell is trying to tamp down a controversy, the president clearly expects his lawmakers on the hill to do that. But the reality is republican lawmakers, not mcconnell specifically, but senators, Lindsey Graham for instance, they came out and said this is not acceptable. Lindsey graham, a top ally of the president and called the president and said this is not okay. And basically that sort of pressure is probably why we saw the president walk it back. The democrats in the house, they are getting ready to introduce a bill that will basically require that anybody who is offered dirt on a political opponent from a foreign country will have to report it. And i talked to a lot of House Republicans yesterday, and basically all of them told me they would vote for such a bill. So im curious if mcconnell could keep that position saying hes not willing to take this bill up to the floor if this overwhelmingly passes from the house and given all of the criticism. Pressure on him. But at the same time it seems like he doesnt want to get into the fight with the president and that be seen as a reduke to the President Trump given everything in the mueller report. An interesting position. And shan, you said the comment shows that he has a disregard for Law Enforcement. Jamie gangel here at cnn spoke to a senior gop source and basically this source said if the president were to act on his words, that that would be an Impeachable Offense. So does this increase pressure on democrats to move ahead with hearings . I dont think this one particular statement necessarily ratchets it up this much. Certainly if he did that and sticks to his word, that would be an Impeachable Offense and add that to the laundry list of potential offenses. But i think it may help the democrats in terms of slowly swaying public pressure to understand that he needs to be held accountable. That his basic instinct is always i dont need to listen to anyone, i decide what is right or wrong. He sort of has a grade schoolers view of what it means to be president of the United States. Im president , i get to do anything, fbi director opinion doesnt matter and intelligence doesnt matter. It is my opinion that matters. Owe what do you think about the pivot saying, look, i want to listen so that i could then tell the fbi about the offer. Right. Is that still a violation of the law . Perhaps listening is not. If you report it right away. But what he wants is the little marshal star to make the decisions as the chief Law Enforcement officer himself. But i like the idea, the nobrainer of bipartisan support for that mandatory disclosure because then you dont have to worry about that. You brought up the point of impeachment and that was one of the top questions reporters had for Speaker Pelosi yesterday at the mic, what does this mean for impeachment . Does it cross a line . And once again we saw her tamp down any expectation of impeachment saying weve got these legislation this legislation were introducing and will pass those and it is just another example of pelosi using strategic timing to sort of let the pressure out on impeachment by saying im going to bring up these bills to pass and we only saw, i think maybe one top democrat say i support an impeachment inquiry in the house. The numbers have plateaus and we havent seen them pick up so this wasnt enough to move the needle. Even though nancy pelosi is sort of distancing herself from impeachment, the president at the same time seems to be escalating his war of words with house Speaker Pelosi after she doubled down on the claim eelz part of a coverup. It is a fashionist statement, it is a disgrace of the statement. I call her nervous nancy. Shes a nervous wreck. And for her to make a entertainment like that is outrageous. But when nancy pelosi makes the Statement Like that, she ought to be ashamed ashamed of herself. So hes clearly responding to what she said and it wassin flam forry but in flam forry and it seems like nancy pelosi gets under the president s skin more than anyone else in congress. Absolutely. Go back a couple of months ago when she bested him coming out of the shutdown. He shutdown the government saying he would build the wall and he didnt get a dollar and that is because of the nancy pelosi leadership and refused to give on that and ever since then that set the tone. The president after the 2018 election, he called her and told her he admired her and told aides that but now when it comes to impeachment, she has held the line. And i think there are trump allies who think if they were to prematurely go into impeachment it would help the president and pelosi has told people she thinks that is what hes lashing out and trying to goad her caucus and move them toward impeachment but right now shes cool as a cucumber and not moving ahead with that. And we know that hes he likes gamemanship and who can win the game and it is all about winning and losing. And when it looks like she could be winning on a front. It absolutely bothers the president. I think they love if they would overreach on this subject. And he keeps ramping it up. Thank you for coming on. Appreciate it. And coming up, tensions rising. The president rejects irans denial of attacking two tankers saying he has video proof. So what happens next. And plus a stunning admission from the man accused of shooting david ortiz and where he said ortiz wasnt the intended target. The volvo xc90. The most awarded luxury suv of the century. Well tensions are flaring between the United States and iran. And now President Trump is putting the blame squarely on iran for an attack on two tankers in international waters. Well iran did do it. And you know they did it because you saw the boat. One of the mines didnt explode and it is probably got essentially iran written all over it. Theyre a nation of terror. And theyve changed a lot since ive been president. I can tell you. They were unstoppable and now theyre in deep, deep trouble. You cant you cant they dont have how do you stop this action. How do you stop the outrageous acts . With 30 of the oil coming from there. Well were going to see. Well this comes as the United States released this new video. Officials say this shows iran removing an unexploded mine from one of the tankers, proving with, quote, virtual certainty, iran was behind the attack on the two ships. Cnn Senior CorrespondentFred Pleitgen is standing by but first i want to bring in michelle kosinski. So what are we learning from the video. They said this came from a u. S. Plane overhead and in darkness they were able to see the ship trying to get this unexploded mine off the tanker. And they said this boat it was an iranian fast boat and this is an asset of the irgc, of iran elite revolutionary guard. And this is some proof. And the first round of attacks on tankers a few weeks ago, the administration was criticized for not offering hard proof at the outset and giving detail as to why they thought iran was behind this and so here is the video and were hearing from others, from diplomatic sources of u. S. Allies that when you see this video, this is a virtual certainty in their words that iran did this and they feel that this video, quote, nails it. To fred to get the response from the iranians in the wake of the new video being released. Reporter hi, pam, well the iranians are saying the opposite. They continue to say unequivocally they didnt do it and in fact the Iranian Foreign minister doesnt believe there is even circumstantial evidence that the iranians were behind these attacks. So it has been quite interesting to see from the iranian perspective. What theyve been saying all along is they didnt do this. And they say that part of the gulf of o man is where they have security and their responsible for t for the the security there and they wouldnt do it just because of that. And one of the interesting things we heard from President Trump saying that the iranians are under a lot of pressure and theyre changing. The iranians dont feel that pressure because they are essentially saying or said today at friday prayers that they believe that Iran Supreme Leader the ayatollah humiliated President Trump when he rebuffed the offer of new talks brought by shinzo abe from japan. So they are sticking by their guns. And also putting out there to the farce news agency, they said, look, the company that runs the ship that was on that video essentially itself is saying that it doesnt believe that that ship was hit by a mine. The crew apparently saying they believe it was hit by projectiles. It is unclear how much Situational Awareness the crew would have as the explosions were going off but that is definitely something very much feeding into the iranian narrative as well. And i want to go back to you, michelle, in the wake of the attack the president is claiming that iran is changing its behavior for the better under his hardline policies. What are you hearing about that . Particularly from allies . I mean, it is not clear what exactly hes referring to. And i wish that he had been pressed on that. What examples is he giving. But we do hear from other sources that there is some evidence that iran is feeling the crunch of u. S. Sanctions. Especially cutting off its oil sales. That was something that particularly particularly particularly infuriated iran and that the u. S. Considers destabilizing and that is true to some extent but in terms of changing irans behavior for the better, what the u. S. Did in its campaign of maximum pressure was supposed to bring iran back to the negotiating table or stop it from doing things like this. Well, what were seeing from these latest attacks and other incidents that were not even talking about today, is that it is not a deterrent, iran is not changing its behavior and theyre refusing to come back to the negotiating table and u. S. Allies, too, are concerned about that. Especially since they felt like the Iran Nuclear Deal was the best way to keep irans activities in check. Michelle kosinski, thank you so much and Fred Pleitgen from tehran. Thank you. And coming up, they drank and bathed in dangerously leadtainted water wondering if they would see justice and now victims of the flint water scandal are dealing with the news that prosecutors have dropped all criminal charges against government officials. So what is next for the future . Well talk to one victim. Plus the man accused of trying to murder david ortiz claims the red sox legend was not his intended target.
