Mask mandate, that is something the Iowa Governor still refuses to implement. Is President Trump concerned about this . It doesnt appear so. He was just over the border in wisconsin yesterday and did not mention coronavirus whatsoever, not a single word. And yet another sign of the federal governments chaotic response to coronavirus, a medical panel at the national i institute of health is contradicting President Trump and the fda saying there is no evidence to support the use of convalescent plasma to treat covid patients. Lets talk about that in a second. But new research does show that steroids may imapproval the survival rate. Liz wed Elizabeth Cohen is standing by with that. What does the analysis show. They found that steroids do appear to save lives and this is confirming something doctors have known for some time. I remember talking to doctors in new york city back in march and they said, look, were using steroids because they worked in other situations with other viruses. Were going to try them. Well the medical instincts were right. Lets look at the numbers that come from this very large u. K. Trial. When they looked at 1,700 covid parents among 678 treated with steroids, 33 died. When you look at around a thousand patients who got usual care or a placebo, they didnt get steroids, almost 42 died. That is a significant difference. What this tells you is if you were in this situation, you would want steroids. And so it is good to know that what doctors have been doing for a while, that the statistics bear them out. Brooke. What about the story about the plasma. Ive had covid and ive begin my plasma and i want to give again but the contradiction between the nih and what they are saying to help to treat covid patients, what is the truth . You know, brooke, there has been so much back and forth about this. Im going to talk about the back and forth then give you what i think is the bottom line. So the back and forth is the fda gives it an authorization and then an nih panel said look, this shouldnt be standard of care there is just not evidence for it. All of good things that Brooke Baldwin and others did, it doesnt look like it necessarily works. It shouldnt be the standard of care. Now the nih gave a statement to cnn that said that what they say doesnt contradict the fda because the nih did not make a recommendation against the use of plasma. So if you could follow that, they say ill give you my bottom line. Forget about the government acronyms and double negatives and say this. I spoke to several doctors who are cynical and curmudgeon as they come and i said if you or your spouse were in the hospital with covid19, very sick, what you want convalescent plasma and they said yes. Am i sure that it would work. Absolutely not. The data is not great. It is not there yet. But it is probably not going to hurt me and it could possibly help me. That is the way that they phrased it. In other words this is not hydroxychloroquine. Those doctors didnt want hydroxychloroquine. This is different. Yes. Thank you for cutting through it and just giving me the straight skinny on whi so when i get the in the from American Red Cross to give, i will. Iowa state is reversing course on allowing thousands of fans to attend the football home opener as iowa reports a 77 jump in new cases this week compared to the previous week. Cnns omar jimenez is live in des moines. And so omar, what is the story about the iowa state change in plans. Are fans allowed or no . For now they are not allowed for the opening football ganl and it is the decision the Athletic Department had to reverse after watching the data and how this recent coronavirus surge has played out here in iowa. They said the decision wam after weighing Community Feedback and they hope to have fans at future games but it depends on how the campus reacts and it affected by the kriers and the most recent one looks over the course of the past week, iowa has the highest case rate in the country and a test Positivity Rate that puts them in the top five. And one of the major concerns, because this report puts out recommendations comes from having a plan from universities and it is a concern that even the governor kim reynolds had and tried to put it out plainly in numbers in a press conference she had earlier this afternoon, saying that when you look at johnson county, which is where the university of iowa is, from august 2nd to august 8th, before students to campus, there was 712 new cases, 18 of those were 19 to 24 years old. From august 23rd to 29th, once students were back, that number of cases went to 1390, for a Positivity Rate of 30 and 74 of those cases were in ages 19 to 24. Now, along with the recommendation of trying to have a plan for universities, they also recommend putting in place a mask mandate. Something Governor Reynolds has been reluctant to do. Saying that if they were able to lower the cases before without the mask mandate, theyre going to try to do it again. Despite the Task Force Report recommending them do so. They recommend that bars close down and that restaurant capacity are significantly reduced because, again, as weve seen the numbers go up, weve seen how far they could go and Task Force Officials are hoping iowa would send things in the opposite direction. Lets hope so. Thank you so much in des moines. So lets explore all of this with my next guest dr. Amy Compton Phillips from Providence Health system, so a pleasure to have you on. And lets start with what omar was talking about in des moines. Iowa state reversing course on the the plan to alaw 25,000 fans to go into the football arena, no dais, that is not happening any more. Do you see any scenario where thousands of fans could pack into a stadium . You know, i think they could pack into a stadium in new zealand because they have the virus under control. And that is the secret. Is that if we get the virus under control, we could resume our lives again and that is why things like mask mandates and doing very broad testing make a huge difference. It is the way we could get the virus under control. And so it is not giving up to require a mask. It is actually helping us get our lives back. How about the news on steroids, i was just talking about with Elizabeth Cohen treeing 1700 patients with covid sewing that deaths were significantly reduced by staking steroids. How encouraged are you by this . Im incredibly encouraged. Big problem when covid hit was that everybody was susceptible, nobody had antibodies and we have no treatment. So as time goes on, before we get to a vaccine, very slowly less people will be susceptible. Were not trying to get everybody infected with herd immunity but well continue to acquire more treatments to steroids are critical element, particularly because their affordable which is fantastic and not only in the u. S. But worldwide these are useful. In addition to remdesivir and all of the nursing care that we found that really help people, things like delane, putting people on a ventilator and if they are short of breath use high levels of treatment and put them on their stomach. It is amazing as the months pass and there is questions about how to treat. It feels like were slowly starting to get our hands around what is helpful. And then the other piece of what is helpful, this notion of convalescent plasma and i would love your opinion on this apparent contradiction. But listening to elizabeth it sounds like nih were trying to clear up what they were saying in terms of whether or not those who have had covid to give plasma to people who are super sick. Would you take someones plasma if you were super sick, is the best way to ask it. Thank you to every person that has done what we asked and donated plasma. We couldnt begin to get answers or offer this as a treatment unless people go into the red cross and donate. So thank you. Bless for you that. Of course. But i would probably take pl plasma in the context of a study. Can he cant just declare and say this works and we have to do the work in the meantime to prove what works and what doesnt and what makes a difference. And so that really is what were trying to do with plasma. And so emergency use authorization has authorized it based on some glimmers of hope. But it is not proof. And so we need to keep working to get that proof. It is incredible having given the plasma. And shame on me, im outing myself, ive never given blood in my life and i sat there, it took 45 minutes and it was easy peasy and they call it liquid gold and it is hanging there in a sack and it goes to three people who are super sick. And just the idea that maybe, maybe, maybe it could help someone to me felt worth it. Dr. Compton phillips, thank you very much. Thank you. Coming up, dr. Fauci is now warning that sending College Students back home after an outbreak is, quote, the worst thing you could do. So where should they go . And after doubting the coronavirus death toll, like many conspiracy theorists do, joni ernst is now saying something different. We have those details. And the administration continues to suggest that covid isnt really a threat to kids. Well guess who i get to talk to. A 13yearold still struggling with symptoms months after testing positive. Do not miss that interview. Youre watching cnn, im Brooke Baldwin. Free deodorants only mask odor . Secret aluminum free helps eliminate odor instead of just masking it. Over time, you go noseblind to the odors in your home. background music but others smell this. upbeat music thats why febreze plug has two alternating scents and eliminate odors for 1200 hours. Breathe happy febreze. La la la la la. Were back. Youre watching cnn, im Brooke Baldwin. Colleges and universities, they are struggling to contain coronavirus outbreaks on their campus. There are now more than 25,000 covid infections at various schools in 37 states. Look at all of the red on your screen. And while College Administrators are scrambling to figure out how to hand the outbreaks, dr. Fauci has a clear message. Do not send students home. It is the worst thing you could do. Keep them at the university, in a place that is sequestered enough from the other students but dont have them go home because they could be spreading it their home state. One of the highest case count is at the university of South Carolina. Now reporting more than 1,000 students infected with the virus and already theyre quarentine space is 60 full. So with me now aaron slowy, editor of South CarolinaStudent Newspaper the daily gamecocks. So welcome. Listen, when you hear from folks like fauci saying if students are sick on colonel campuses, wherever in the country, like dont go home. But when i hear about South Carolinas available quarantine space filling up so quickly, what are you hearing, what are students doing . Are they going home or no . I think it is a combination of both. I feel like the university and the administration has put out the message that if we run out of spaces, youll have to go home. Theyre going to try the best that they can to find other cases but i think students will ultimately go home but it discourages people from getting tested because if they dont want the university to close, they wont get tested. That is not a good thing. How is the university handling it . What are they doing . The communication from the university is very inconsistent. There is not one solid place where everyone could get information. Yes, they have a website but it is a trickle of information. You get it from the press. You good it from news breaking in the town hall. So i think parents and students are confused that i talked to. What are you doing personally . Are you attending any classes . Are you there off campus . What is your story. Yeah, so most of my classes are hybrid so what that means for me is sunday some days i person to class and some days it is online. But the university is reporting a certain amount of classes being 100 online but im dont know how much of that is true because for me in my classes in the registrar, they havent changed the mode of instruction even though i know my classes have changed. So im not sure how much that reporting is accurate on the university level. How frustrating for you students. And then the other piece of this, which im curious about, is how people, students still going to parties which theyre not supposed to. I know the university is giving, i read, interim suspensions to a handful of students and six greek organizations for violating the rules and hosting parties. And i have to imagine that, just thinking back to my college days, you dont want to snitch on a fellow student for going to a party but at the same time i want to be healthy and not around those students so what is the sense between the students following the rules and those who arent . Well it is definitely frustrating because for a lot of students they follow rules while on campus but not necessarily off campus. So i dont necessarily think that the students that are in the classrooms are actually the people, the majority of the people that are out partying. So the people that are out partying dont care if the school goes online because the majority of the students live off campus and they do plan and they plan to stay in the University Goes online. So if you or someone you know of was hosting a party and they shouldnt, would students call it in . It depends on student, to be honest and to be frank. There was a party with over 200 and 300 people last weekend and not a Single Person got in trouble with the university. And the thing that i have to make clear is that people have to report it to the university for the university to do something about it. When they see it on social media but if no one reports it, that is why we have 15 people only getting suspended from the university. When the number should probably be much higher. Im hearing what your throwing down. Erin, thank you so much. And just as a student journalist, we need you. Good luck. Coming up, republican senator joni ernst now is apparently changing her tune on the coronavirus death toll after initially siding with conspiracy theorists. As he fights for reelection, President Trump is questioned former Vice President joe bidens Mental Fitness and done this from the campaign trail to tv ads but a new report claims that russia is behind the plot to spread misinformation about joe bidens mental capacity. And that the department of Homeland Security withheld a warning from t warning from the Intelligence Community about it. Evan perez is on this for us today. And so, evan, what did the warning say and who at dhs decided to keep it quiet . This is a warning that was being sent out to Law Enforcement back in july.
