From their families. Today, protesters are demanding they be put back together. Meanwhile the president is calling for reinforcement of i. C. E. , saying democrats will soon want to remove all police. Hundreds of marches are happening from coast to coast hosted by nearly 150 organizations including move on and the aclu. Cnn has a team of reporters tracking every step. Lets take a look. One of the largest protests happening just away from the white house. Jessica schneider is there at lafayette. So tell us whats happening. Reporter fredericka, the outrage has defended at Lafayette Park, as you said, right across from the white house. While the president is not at the white house, hes at his gulf club in bedford, new jersey, thousands have come here to get the message to him as well as to congress. Its a little quiet right now. Thats because theyre listening to the speaker behind me. But earlier just a few minutes ago there were chants of vote him out. Ive talked to people from denver and california and one family who drove 13 hours from alabama. So a lot of people have come here to d. C. This is really the focal point of all of those rallies happening all over the country. So just behind me is the stage where all the speakers are taking center stage. Were expecting to hear, actually, from several children. Theyre age 7 to 10, and we understand that theyre going to be reading letters that theyve written directly to these kids who have been separated from their families and are now in shelters. Were also expecting to hear from actress america ferreira, singer and songwriter alicia keys, as well as linmanuel miranda. Theyre all here. Of course, thousands of people surrounding me. After this rally, theyll be hedsed up pennsylvania avenue toward capitol hill. And, of course, the capitol, thats when theyll try to make their voice known for this entire capitol city and at the end, end up right at the capital hoping to get their message not o. J. To congress but the president. Thank you so much. Cnns rene marsh is also there. Reporter shes right. There are thousands of people out here. People with signs. I had a chance to speak to a lot of them. Look. Many of them say it is hot, it is humid. Its one of the warmest days in d. C. So far this year. But that is why theyre out here because their message is so important. I was just speaking to you actually, and if you talk to us live on tv, william, right . Mark. Mark. Sorry about that, mark. Its so important for you to come out here. Its so important for you because you wanted to send a message. What is that message . I wanted to send the message were people, all families. 55, 65 years ago no, longer than that 80 years ago, we put people in mensanart because theyre japanese. Now were separating families because we dont like the color of their skin. Theyre here because they want to get away from the violence and corruption of their own country. They forget about the fact that there were 800 jews who tried to get over here in 1938 and 1939, got sent back, and were all killed. Reporter so, fred, thats one perspective out here. They want to get the message to the president that they dont necessarily agree with his policy, but they also want to get a message out to people who want to come to the United States. Youre kind of sharing that perspective with me as well. You said, look, youre not speaking directly to the president today, right . Who else are you speaking to . Well, im here because even if this does not change anybodys vote, the lawmakers votes, i want people who want to come here, who want refuge in our country to know that there are many, many citizens of the u. S. Who do not agree with what is going on now. And i want them to see this. I want to be another body for them to see. Thank you so much. So fred, just a sampling of what were hearing out here. Of course, were going to start moving and marching from this park, and well make our way toward the capitol. Theyll be making a stop at the didnt of justice and again moving their way to the capitol. Well be with them throughout the way. Well speaker with you once we get moving. All right. Rene marsh with sentiments there and the march getting under way. Youre hearing in the background voices and sounds from the pes gat want nation. Lets check in with cnns Polo Sandoval in new york city, and whats taking place there . Reporter a really incredible sight here, fred. Were ahead of mass in march thats walking onto the Brooklyn Bridge. Behind me are thousands of men, women, and children who have come together here in new york city to get their message heard loud and clear, calling not just for the reunification of these families but also for the stop and removal of President Trumps zero tolerance policy. In this crowd as we mentioned there are families, also lawmakers including a new york congressman. Congressman, youre live on cnn, youre out here. Tell us the message you want your colleagues to hear . First of all, new york city must be a place where this movement begins because were a city of immigrants. Second after all, we have to make sure these children are united with their families. Make sure dreamers come out of the shadow, make sure that family unification is made. Thats the agenda. It should not be laced with toxic stuff like the wall or family reunification, beetdsing up on dreamers, an obviously keeping children away interest their mothers. Reporter this is nothing new for you across the country. What is new now after the president s zero tolerance policy. What has led to so many people getting involved . Because people realize we must fight for the values that have made this country a beacon of hope. Here we are, with this type of events all over across america. You can see white, black, brown, native americans, old and young, coming together, to send a strong message to the president of the United States. This cannot happen under our watch. Thank you so much to the both of you. Good luck today. Again, fred, these are two voices. There are many people here. Something thats interesting as i step out of the shot so you can see, there are many families here. Many families have not been directly affected by this, but they say theyre here representing the familiarities who are throughout the country still being held or in the process of being reunified with their families. They say those reunifications have not happened often enough and theyre very confident the president is watching. Fred . Polo sanlds val, thank you so much, with the voices there in new york city at the Brooklyn Bridge. Now lets check in with cnns ryan young. Hes live in chicago. Ryan. Reporter were about 45 minutes away from this protest. You see people starting to gather here. Theres a lot of passion in terms of people on this subject. What are you hoping to get out as far as a message . Look at this. The hotzest day of the year and theyre out here voting, marching for the families. Twothirds of the country says the zero tolerance policy of President Trump, separating children if their families, is just plain wrong. These people are walking the streets in what is a democracy. Reporter youre a senator. But there are some who feel very frustrated over not being able to make change. What can happen . What can be changed now so people can have some sort of belief . Let me tell you. I believe in two things. I believe in the goodness and values of the American People and i believe in the constitution. The constitution tells us in november, we get a chance to speak. And im asking people across the United States, voters, participate, be part of the election. Dont stay home and curse the television, sorry, come out and use your citizens right to vote. Thats the most important thing. When i walk out, people are Walking Around with passion, Walking Around with signs. They want people like yourself to do something. What should you tell members of congress . What should they do to make things happen . Listen today or listen to the message in november. I think the American People are going to speak loudly, that theyre sick and tired of this immigration policy. Look at i. C. E. What a group of incompetents. At this point theyre focused more on toddlers instead of terrorists. Instead of deporting felons, theyre deporting children. Instead of stopping bad money from coming in and dirty money going out, theyre focused on separating kids from families. Senator, i hear the passion in your voice. What are you telling the people today . Heres the good news for the crowd. No politicians will be speaking. There are going to be members of the clergy and those representing the family. Well be in the crowd as we should be. Its time to put an end to this cruel policy. Thank you so much for your time. Obviously a lot of people are here wanting to talk to the senator as well. You see its more than an hour away. Theyre expecting more than a couple thousand people to show up. This might be one of them. No politician is taking the stage. They plan to turn this over to the people and the clergy. They want to have their voices heard. Fred . Ryan young. Thank you so much. Lets go to the southern border where theres been a lot of activity in the last few weeks. In mcallen, texas, many protesters have gathered. Our Dianne Gallagher is back there in galveston, texas. What is expected there today . Reporter froed, our protest much like chicago isnt expected to start for a little bit of time its going be smaller than what youre seeing around the rest of the country. In part to population and also due to the fact theyve been out here protesting weekly if not daily in these border communities, not just since the rest of the name became aware of the zero tolerance policy, but some for years have protested i. C. E. As an entity itself. Theyre sponsoring protests around the country. Were thinking about 100 people, according to organizers. Really, mcallen, texas, the images from the Processing Center, which is just down the road, i toured it a couple of weeks ago. Those images, those parents in cages t last cages covered in mylar blankets before theyre separated. People in mcallen looking to people around the country to show them support today. Powerful messages coming from kids ranging in age from 7 to 10 there in washington, d. C. , trying to offer appeals to kids that are detained from the southern border. I want to go straight to boston now, senator Elizabeth Warren, one week after visiting a Processing Center in mcallen. Lets listen in. This is about children being held in cages, this is about babies scat erred all across the country, this is about mamas who want their children back. President trump seems to think that the only way to have immigration rules is to rip parents from their families, is to treat rape victims and refugees like terrorists, and to put children in cages. This is ugly, this is wrong, and this is not the way to run our country. The president s deeply immoral actions have made it obvious we need to rebuild our immigration system from top to bottom starting by replacing ice with something that reflects our morality and values. This moment is a moral crisis for our country. Dr. Martin luther king said there comes a time when silence is betrayal. We will not be silent. We cannot be silent. We will build a country that reflects our values. That is why we are here. Thank you all. Its an honor to be with you. Thank you. All right. Youre listening to senator Elizabeth Warren there making her plea, saying this suggestly, this is wrong, and this is not the way we run our country, meaning this zero tolerance policy, the separation of children from their parents. Senator warren was in mcallen, texas, last weekend and had very terse words after her observations there of how children had been separated from their parents on the border. She also offered this to the Trump Administration saying we need to rebuild the immigration system starting with replacing i. C. E. With something that reflects our morality. We know that the president ahead of these demonstrations tloutz the country tweeted today saying the democrats are trying to remove i. C. E. , but offering his support to immigration authorities and encouragement. Lets talk about all of this thats unfolding right now across the country. Joining me right now two come men tatzers. Good to see you both. David, you first. The road is very long for any kind of legislation that would remove or in any way modify i. C. E. , but the challenge right now of reunifying children and parents, that can be immediate. That is something still the president could do. Yeah, good morning, fred. So, right. The president has it in his power to go back to the policy that was in place during the obama and bush administrations which some people refer to as catch and release. When some come across the border, theyre processed, sometimes released in to the United States under their own core con sans, sometimes later to return to an immigration hearing or asylum hearing, Something Like that. Like i said, were a long way away. What you see going on here is this jockeying between the senators who, by the way, might be president ial candidates in 2020. You said senator warren said lets think about replacing i. C. E. Senator gillibrand said lets abolish i. C. E. You had senator hair risz saying lets reimagine it. And senator dick durbin said, you know, look at i. C. E. , you know. Its more focused on toddlers than terrorists. Right. I think this is a situation where democrats are expressing outrage of people who see a cruel policy of separation of families. On the other hand, though, this is not a position thats
