Carolina and South Carolina declaring states of emergency. Sandbagging has begun. And officials are telling residents to Pay Attention to evacuation orders should they come. Grocery shelves are emptying very quickly as residents flock to stock up on water and food. And there are also reports of price gouging on essential goods. We are covering this storm from all angles. Meteorologist tom sader is tracking the latest in the Weather Center. And we also have a meteorologist in South Carolina on the beach. Tom, well go to you first and what youre noticing about the storm. Well, the visual storm is not showing us an quiet. The visual satellite means once the sun sets well lose this, but overnight expect Rapid Development from a category 1, maybe its a hurricane major status. Thats a category 3. Could it make it to 4 or 5 . Thats possible. Now, we are several days out. So to pinpoint a landfall right now, i mean, we can show you the models and talk about it, but theres going to be tweaking to this each and every day. Thursday night into friday morning, entire east coast will feel the rip currents, the large swells, the strong winds. And as the system gets closer and intensifies, then well be able to talk more about the landfall. But anywhere on the north and South Carolina coastline its possible. Again, each day when we get new information from the Hurricane Hunters and the computer models, theyre going to be able to give us a little bit more detail. Well, this is very possibly going to be a category 4, maybe close to a category 5. It is possible, too, it could come close to the outer banks and then pull away. Its also possible some models want it just spinning around on the coast of the outer banks. If it does that for days, this could be a scenario like we had with hurricane harvey. In texas last year, you could outwalk harvey and it dropped over 50 inches of rain. So that would be catastrophic. So as we watch the next several days, and it will take several days, well find out more about this each and every day. However, its a great time now for families to get together to discuss, talk about evacuation procedures, what zone are you in . Do you have the information and the gear to stay at home . But this red dot here, you see this, thats the u. S. Model. The european is inland. But this wants to hang around for a while. But i want to share this with you, this is not the only storm. The peak in the Hurricane Season is tomorrow for the atlantic. Lining up now off the coast of africa, youve got helene, not worried about it, it will become a hurricane later tonight and head north in the atlantic. Isaac is moving to the lesser antilles. That will become a hurricane and maybe heavy amounts of rain to puerto rico on friday. Out in the eastern pacific, we still have olivia, which is a hurricane losing strength to Tropical Storm status, but fredericka, that will move and most likely make landfall in the Hawaiian Islands in a day and a half. A lot going on but the big story is florence only because of explosive development in the next couple of days. All right, tom satyr, keep us posted. Lets go to Kaley Hartung on North Carolina beach. What are people doing there to brace . Reporter well, fred, i dont want the images of casual beach goers behind me to fool anyone. People here are taking the threat of Hurricane Florence very seriously, if anything, today they are just trying to soak up those last rays of sun before hunkering down for what is ahead. As one longtime resident of this area told me, he wakes up every day prepared for the storm. Thats the risk of living on the coast. So the first visible elements were seeing of people preparing, you said it, in the supermarkets, the shelves for water, bread and milk. Even batteries and flashlights. Those shelves are emptying. And people needing to pick up a board game or two. Thats true for people along the carolina coasts, even inland as far as rock hill, South Carolina, we are seeing the shelves empty. The governor of South Carolina, he expressed a sentiment that many people had, and that is hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. To that in charleston, South Carolina, that county aware of what the worst could be. And they are saying, in the case that the area is evacuated, they will not be offering shelter within Charleston County because those shelters cannot withstand a category 3 hurricane. If that area is evacuated, they are already cautioning people to move farther inland. But in the meantime, fred, before any talks of evacuations begin here, like i said, folks here soaking up the sun while they still got it. All right, kaylee hartung, thank you so much. Les moonves is stepping down. His departure is part of a corporate settlement fight for control of the network. And this follows a series of act ovati accusations of claims of physical violence and forced sex. Brian stelter explains why this case takes on so much stature. Reporter hey, fred. Yes, extraordinary developments for the Entertainment Industry and the Business World as les moonves prepares to step down from cbs. We have heard a lot about me too cases this year, but this is the first case involving a fortune 500 ceo. And moonves is the subject of a brand new story in the new yorker. As you just mentioned, they came six weeks after the original story by rodan farrow in the new yorker. Step back to understand what is going on here. Moonves is the subject of a battle, a corporate tug of war between moonves and the Controlling Shareholder of cbs, sherry redstone, for more than six months now. Redstone and moonves are battling over who was really going to control cbs in the future and whether cbs was going to be sold to a bigger company. This has been a battle that has been working its way through the courts. But with that as the backtrop, farrows story came out at tend of july, the initial story came out at the end of july to create a lot of uncertainty about what was going to happen with moonves decided not to suspend moonverkss right away moonves right away. Instead, they brought in someone to investigate the story. That did not sit well with women who read the original story and said, this happened to me, too. They called farrow and spoke with farrow. The result was the story out today. But even more disturbing allegations against moonves. Moonves denied the appalling claims in the story. He said he never forced himself upon anyone. But the allegations are quite detailed, quite explicit on the new yorker website. And now within hours of the new story, we are told moonves is stepping down. They reached a resolution of the case announced as soon as sunday evening. So the debate in the media circles is about what led to the extraordinary confluence of events. Why is it that moonves is stepping aside now . Because of the corporate tug of war . Or does it have more to do with the allegations that farrow has described in his story . I think the answer is a mixture of both. It became untenable for moonves to remain the ceo of cbs. As a result, hell be stepping aside and the announcement could come sunday evening or certainly by monday morning before the market opens here in new york. Its an end of an era for cbs. Of course, the acclaimed broadcast, everyone knows the cbs brand. And for decades, moonves has been the leader of that brand and broadcast company. Its unclear what, if anything, hell do next. But he does stand to make a whole lot of money on the way out the door. More than 100 million in compensation. Now, whether the cbs board tries to claw that back based on the results of the investigations into him is something that remains to be seen, but certainly something closely watched. Fred, back to you. Brian stelter, thank you so much. And a stunning upset at the u. S. Open shrouded in controversy after tennis super star Serena Williams looses to a 20yearold player. Tennis fans are reacting to 17,000 in fines against Serena Williams for Court Violations just before her stunning upset at the u. S. Open. The historic victory by 20yearold naomi osaka, japans first person to win a grand slam title, overshadowed by the controversy. Serena williams went back and forth with the umpire over violences, including what the umpire thought were hand signals by williams coach and a point penalty for smashing her racket right there. Well, thats what prompted williams to call the umpire a thief. That call cost her a game. Fans and players were quick to respond. And tennis legend Billy Jean King tweeted, thank you for calling out this double standard. Meanwhile, Serena Williams is accusing the umpire of sexism. And i asked pat cash whether he has thoughts about this and whether it is sexism. Well, the stakes are high, you know, players, you can speak to this as a player, you know, theres a lot of passion, be upset, whatever you want to call it, but you see it on so many Different Levels for so many players. And even recently, Roger Federer challenged an umpire. And that happened in cincinnati. And he got an apology out of the umpire. If you go back a few years, theres jimmy conners, john mcenroe, there was certainly name calling there as well. So to serenas point, is there a double standard . She actually saw a penalty, a hefty one, in points, in games and in financial fine. Well, i dont think so. She may have felt that at the time, certainly im a coach who is one of the top american girls, and cocoa has been fine. And more have lost points in grand slams before. Its not something to do about men or girls, but just by rules, the umpiring is very hard, as i said, he was within his right to do that. And you know, serena felt that was unfair. Shes called it sexist. She calls it sexist. And here im talking to a man and asking you about your definition of what is sexism and did it play out, but you did go as far as telling bbc radio, and im quoting now, this was the most bizarre match and presentation i have ever seen. What do you mean by that . And do you think sexism does play a role here . I dont think sexism has anything to do with the presentation. The fact that the crowd was booing completely during the presentation. This is taking the shine off a young girl, a 20yearold, who is an absolute super star. Shes potentially the world number one. She was convincingly beating serena at the time. She got unsettled in the match when it happened, but she was pretty much in control. And sort of taking the shine off of it, here was a little girl crying on the presentation stage. Serena is telling the crowd, please, no more booing, weve had enough of this. It was just absolutely bizarre. It was just very unusual and quite emotional for us watching it, too, to see this little girl crying and saying, im sorry it happened this way. And take the shine off her win, her performance. Its emotional, passionate and thats the way it goes. And that was a tough moment for that young woman, naomi osaka. Meantime, serena vowed to continue to fight for equality for women in the sport. All right.
