Community here and beyond want everyone to know is they want to focus their attention and their love on those who were shot, those who were killed, and the community at large. They would like to wholly ignore the person who did this. Victor . We heard from the woman there in your story who said we need to talk about the victims a lot. We will do that this afternoon. Thank you. Lets also check in with the investigation. Cnns miguel marquez. What are you learning about the suspect . Reporter just horrifyingly t terrifying. This person had a quiet with a seemingly tranquil exterior, but underneath and online, there was just depth of hatred for jews. For many different groups. So we have spoken to several neighbors of mr. Bauers who said he was neither friendly or unfriendly. He said hello and goodbye. He was a trucker. One of the neighbors shared a wall with him where he lived and the people next to him said that sometimes he would hear the television on loudly at ought tim times in the day or the night. We talked to neighbors at a different address. He was over at this address quite often in the last couple of months. He stopped coming. He was helping to care for his cousin who had physical ailments and was disabled. Mr. Bauers had stopped coming to this address for sometime. Everyone said this was an individual who they didnt really know very well at all. He would come and go, but when you start to look at what he was saying online for months and years before, his hatred of jews. 17 days before this event. He was posting about the Migrant Caravan in Central America and mexi mexico. He was pointing at one Jewish Organization in particular. The Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society. They had been down at the border and done a video and he reposted that. There was great concern about this particular organization. They hosted a refugee shabbat the week before and that horrible thing minutes before going into that synagogue saying i cant stand by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics. Im going in. And he did. It is shocking to be tracking down the life outside of this man and then see what someone like that, completely unknown to the people who saw him almost every day that he would be capable of this violence. Victor . Miguel marquez for us. For you at home, i want to discuss this balance that we are going to try to navigate this afternoon. You heard from sarah sidener there talking about how the people in the Community Want to focus on the victims and we will do that. We will talk about their lives and who they were. Not just their depths. Covering the story of how this person executed the deadliest extack on jews in the history of this country. Fred, a little bit of news here. Just a few minutes ago, the mayor of pittsburgh talked to reporters, saying he spoke with President Trump. Not specifically about the planned visit that the president talked about coming here to the tree of life synagogue. He will leave that up to the families and the synagogue when and if he will come, but he said the president was cordial and supportive and saying the community will recover, strong as steel. We will bring that to you when you see me again. Our coverage has to be and will be all encompassing. A community is still reeling from the darkest day in pittsburghs history. They were trying and praying at that vigil and another vigil will be held later today. About an hour ago, the Pittsburgh Steelers fans at heinz field paused for a moment of silence before kickoff. You see the star of david also. That also helped set the tone there in the stadium. Joining us right now, rabbi julie shown felled from the Worldwide Association of conservative rabbis. Good to see you, rabbi and how are you feeling today . Today is obviously a tragic and terrible day for my community worldwide. When one jew is targeted for being jewish, much less an entire community is targeted and murdered in this way, every jew everywhere in the world feels pain and suffering. Feels that sense of threat. And i also believe and i have been hearing from faith leaders and Community Leaders of all different communities and diverse parts of the world, everybody feels that. I heard from so many who said even preceding this, there has been a constant feeling of potential threat. Now that this happened strks set off or a catalyst for deeper feelings or concern about what potentially is around the corner. This is a part of our history for a few thousand years. We have never ever let that stop us. We have never let that stop us from being not only a kind and welcoming community to our fellow brethren, but to taking up that sense of threat and trying to lead in the world to see that others that people of every race, ethnic and faith background and Sexual Orientation are not threatened and to join with them and to be with them. While on the one hand, obviously there is no Jewish School child who will not go to School Tomorrow feeling some sense of threat. But what we teach our children and what we try to do for each other is to make sure that we never let that keep us home, but that we make that take all the us out to defend ourselves and other people and to raise up gods message for the jewish people in the world. We will be a blessing. We will care about morality and we will care about decency and be a light unto the nations even in a dark time like this one. Synagogues across the country have been beefing up security since this happened. You heard the president of the United States addressing the shooting saying had there been an armed guard, perhaps lives have been saved. Do you worry that open arms, open doors at places of worship is soon to be a practice of the past as a result of this latest threat and as a result of the deadliest antisemitic attack on u. S. Soil . The Jewish Community and every Faith Community is built around having its doors open. Right . Every Faith Community, not only synagogues, but churches, mosques, temples, pancake houses, shopping centers. Folk music festivals. We live in an open society. We cannot allow ourselves to give in to feeling that we all have to hide behind gates and locked doors and armed guards in order to be american. The promise of america is that we live in freedom, in safety, and with a sense of community and opportunity. So i believe that we cant allow that to make ourselves that kind of a closed society, but the opposite. What we have to do is join together as people who are caring and people of good will. Let the thousands of people we saw last night out in the streets after shabbat and that we saw in this moving clip of the steelers game today. That americans stand together and say that we believe that we have to be a society that can live in safety and where our freedom to express ourselves is not allowed to be hindered by living in a situation in which we can be subject to battle grade weapons coming into a synagogue. You helped lead this assembly which is the Worldwide Association of conservative rabbis. What is conservatism mean. Help people understand what this means. Its not an extension of a political view. Thank you. When people hear it, they are not quite sure. Conservative judaism is conserving our religious traditions and actually the sort of centrist, big tent place for everybody, a movement of judaism in terms of people bringing political philosophies and philosophies, but we are joined together because of our belief in jewish traditions, our shared faith, our shared history. So its actually conservative judaism was originally referred to in many corners as american judaism. It was a judaism that was built and flourished on the shores, the tree of life congregation is 150 years old. It represents 150 years of continuous peaceful, warm, open, thoughtful prayer. It represents a point of view about the world that says our ancient traditions can be melded with science, with changing society, with diverse people. So sometimes what is conservative is not conservative at all. That is really about being with other people in a way that we can conserve our society and conserve our values and morals and find things that lift us up and bring us together. Rabbi julie shown felled, thank you for being with us. Our hearts are broken. Thank you, thank you. Our investigation is really just beginning. What could have sparked this heinous crime and what can be done to prevent more from happen something we will discuss, coming up. I think everyone will remember october 27th. Im Victor Blackwell in pittsburgh where a gunman carried out the deadliest attack on the Jewish Community in the United States history. We are searching for answers to why this man would want to take the lives of 11 people as they worshipped. The victims range from 54 to 97 years old. They were at worship ceremonies at the tree of life synagogue on shabbat morning when the suspect burst in, armed with multiple hand guns and the suspect is 46yearold Robert Bauers and an ant antisemite and targeted jews on social media. He is charged with federal hate crimes. If convicted, he could face the Death Penalty. Lets go to evan perez and joins us with more on the investigation into the suspect and also into the shooting. Evan, this afternoon, what more are you learning . As you heard from the prosecutor in pittsburgh, this is a horrific crime scene that will take the fbi as much as a week to process. Today, they did a search of the vehicle that he drove to the scene. They are still looking through Surveillance Video in the area to try to piece together the moments before this attack happened. He was able to get into the synagogue and injured four Police Officers who responded to the scene there, heroically trying to save lives. 11 people died there at the synagogue. Now the 28 charges are against l bauers. Wh he wanted to kill jews and he explained why he was doing this. We are going to see for the first time the charges that he is facing. As you mentioned, these are charges that include obstruction of the exercise of religious beliefs and use of a firearm to commit murder. These are hate crime charges under federal law and some carry the Death Penalty, victor. Evan perez in washington. Thank you. When i go back to fredricka whitfield, fred, i saw about a dozen federal agents leaving the tree of life synagogue here. While this is now a place where people are bringing flowers and candles and handing them over to an officer walking across the street because the public is not allowed to get so close. We are as close as anyone can get. This is an active investigation on the scene of the shooting that happened yesterday. Fred . Alreal right, Victor Blackwe in pittsburgh. Lets talk about the legal path and beyond. This is ellie honig, a cnn legal analyst and legal analyst. A former white house ethics czar and ambassador to the czech republic. Good to see you both. Ellie, let me begin with you. The suspect is facing 29 charges including murder and federal hate crimes, but not domestic terrorism. The u. S. Attorney did say for now, no domestic terrorism charges. Help us explain the difference between what constitutes a hate crime versus terrorism. You cant help but harken back to the Birmingham Church bombing. Four little girls were killed. That was a terror attack. For now is the key phrase. The charges that are on the books right now, the murder charges that evan laid out, they carry the potential Death Penalty. Especially in a case like this, you need a charge on the books immediately for someone like this so they can be arrest and held and locked up. These are the most readily provable. The fact that he went into a place of worship and declared intent to kill jews and murdered 11 people. Thats enough to hold him for now. The investigation will continue. If they develop facts that support domestic terrorism which involves an intent to intimidate or terrorize civilians or policy makers, they could be added as well. You are wearing multiple hats here. This hits close to home. You tweeted out earlier today. You wrote trump is scynically pandering and stoking hate such as attacking globalists and triggering the shooter of trumps pro israel policies. They do not innoculate him from responsibility for the consequences. You are implying that the president has responsibility for the tone and the tenor or something that set the stage for this pittsburgh shooting . Fred, thanks for having me on this solemn day. That tweet is part of a conversation that has been happening on social media and other fom rums about the president s responsibility. I was responding to someone asking if the president has pro israel policies, how can we accuse him of stoking antisemitism. Its painful to have to discuss this in such a devastating time for my community. With team i know and cherish who live in Squirrel Hill. We have to realize that President Trump has created a climate through his hatefilled attacks. His aggression against minorities. Also through his own encouraging violence in his rhetoric. It is no coincidence that we are seeing the targets of his ire who are now being exposed to actual violence. I think we would be doing a disservice to the dead and also not protecting us against future attacks if we didnt address the ways in which President Trump contributed to this and frankly i find his sympathies to be not believable. What do you mean by that . He had a few different versions of expressed thoughts on what transpired yesterday. He had a tweet, its not clear if he wrote it or someone else did. Then he went back to partisan business as usual at his rally last night. Unless he is prepared, which we know he wont do, repudiate the hate he spewed into the public discourse. By the way, also stop putting these ar 15 assault weapons in the hands of people. Cut that off. Lets have reasonable control of those weapons. I just dont think the president can believe he can be believed. He is using hate to stoke his base and his distortions and lies about this Migrant Caravan appear to have been part of triggering this shooter. As much as it pains me to talk about the causes in this day of mourning when my heart is breaking, i feel that we have to be honest about that out of respect to the people who were killed as a result of it. And this alleged shooter did make reference to the caravan on that social media site to give people a better understanding of what this site was and what he was documented as saying. Ellie, you sent out a tweet talking about a personal connection to an organization railed against online before the massacre. You wrote this, saying the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society helped settle my grandparents after surviving the holocaust. As a reminder, on an unthinkably dark day of compassion that carried us over the years and generations. Talk more about this reference and how personal this is for you. There are millions in the United States and around the globe that include jewish and nonjewish people as well who felt the impact deeply by what happened yesterday in pittsburgh. Different people relate in different ways. For me, there is the connection you laid out. My grandparent was a holocaust survivor and the Hebrew Aid Society helped her get settled and established here. The ambassador referred to before, one of the motivations of this individual, this shooter, he was railing and ranting against the aid society. That was his last tweet before he committed the murders. The spirit of charity and compassion this group embodies will help people to heal from this. I spoke to the director of the organization who said this in no way will redirect their mission and compassion to assist in whatever way they can. They have for many decades. Thank you so much. Appreciate it. Thanks. Well be right back. My love has come along, applebees new neighborhood pastas. Now thats eatin good in the neighborhood. I thats the retirement plan.
