Lets listen to john mccain. To abandon the ideals we advanced around the globe, and our duty to remain the last best hope of earth, for the sake of some halfbaked nationalism cooked up by people that would rather find scapegoats than solve problems. We live in a land made of ideals, not blood and soil. We are the kau custodians of the champions abroad. Obamas complaints about republicans stopping his agenda are bs, and he can never take responsibility. Lets go to the white house where we find our joe johns. We see the president trying to appeal to the warring factions in the Republican Party. Its a very difficult job, and in our poll the president does not get very high marks for the way he has been dealing with congress. Just to look at the graphic. Overall, 32 approve the way the president is handling congress, and 54 disapproves. The poll also shows that 68 of republicans do approve of the way the president is handling the relationship. Lets talk a little about how the president is trying to straddle the fence here in washington. We saw it on display at the white house just yesterday, the president on the one hand trying to reach out to Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell, and on the other hand trying to keep the peace with his former top adviser, steve bannon. Listen. I know how he feels. Depends on who you are talking about. There are republicans, frankly, that should be ashamed of themselves. We have been friends for a long time. We are probably now, despite what we read we are probably now, at least as far as i am concerned, closer than ever before. The relationship is good and we are fighting for the same thing. The president will get the opportunity to reach out to both sides of the Republican Party once again tonight when we appears before the heritage foundation, and thats a conservative think tan incok in washington, d. C. , and they will be interested in hearing more about the president S Health Care and tax cuts. We will see the president speaking to reporters for the second time in two days when the greek Prime Minister shows up here at the white house later this afternoon. Back to you. Thank you very much, joe. Breaking news just in to us. Minutes ago President Trump announced a key position to confront and battle the Opioid Crisis will not be filled as expected. The president said tom moreno is withdrawing his name after he was the key sponsor of legislation that limits the deas ability to fight the opioid addictions. We heard from joe manchin this morning who was on our air saying over his dead body they would allow moreno to be the drug czar, and saying they would repeal this legislation, really damning from the 60 minutes and Washington Post report. This was legislation passed through consent, and originally this bill was about helping people who were dying, end of life, to get painkillers that were necessary that they could not get, and the 60 minutes report repealing something more sinister, and the Drug Companies lobbying and pushing to allow the loophole, if you will, to make it harder for the Drug Enforcement administration to seize the shipments of suspicious narcotics and flood American Cities with the pills and opioids contributing to this drug crisis that we have. We heard from senator manchin, and he said he will repeal it, and the president was confronted with the reality, and a tweet was thanks for recognizing we need a drug czar that sees this. Suzanne malveaux, thank you very much. And it leaves america without the key position in the middle of a crisis. It has been without this yeah, throughout the administration. Aerial, the drug crisis aside. The president ripping off the bandaid quickly when somebody associated with him starts to get bad press. Today is tuesday, and moreno is out. He was taking these private flights a week and a half, after that story came out. The president acting quickly here. This was extraordinary. Very highprofile embarrassment for the administration. As you point out, moreno was not part of the crowd that went along with the legislation, he spearheaded. Hes a swamp creature. He pushed through something in the end that was bad for West Virginia in particular. Heres the thing, alex, not a single sitting member of congress nor president obama did anything about it. They saw this legislation coming. You cant even understand a lot of this. Nobody it passed with unanimous consent in the senate and house and not a single senator or member of the house opposed it. Clearly it had consequences that most members of congress did not appreciate at the time. I give the Administration Credit for acting swiftly in the case. We have seen other cabinet secretaries, other nominees hangout there even after they are politically dead and its awkward for the administration. In this case, the president acted swiftly and hopefully they act swiftly and appoint a new nominee to the critical position who we can move forward with in fighting the terrible epidemic. There are questions on if this person was on the wrong side of the issue of the Opioid Crisis, how he ended up to be drug czar in the first place. Thats a question for another time. We talked about senator mccain and played sound from him in the opening of the show. We have a new poll out and the president has low Approval Ratings from senator mccain, and he pointed to his half baked securious nationalism. He got choked up a little bit. I thought that was telling. He talked about the obligations of leadership. This is something that is baked into him from the Naval Academy on. Its in his blood from his family members, who have all been military heroes. He was trying to bring the party and perhaps even the president back to sort of a more stable and more reliable concept of patriotism, instead of the patriotism of fools, where you go around and bluster and think its a trade deal as opposed to something enduring. When he talks about the world we built, this postwar world where we kept the peace. A proliferation kept under a lid despite what is going on in north korea. I heard senator mcdacain saying lets not be too hasty in throwing out what we built. Lets listen to the president talk about blame not being placed on him. Listen. We are not getting the job done. Im not going to blame myself. Ill be honest. They are not getting the job done. How do you square that with his own words in 2012, obamas complaints about republicans stopping his agenda are bs since he had full control for two years, and he can never take responsibility. Theres a saying in town for everything trump does you can find a tweet that says the exact opposite a couple of years ago. Yeah, this matters because its getting it done for the American People. President s rarely blame themselves. Why would they . Its not constructive to blame yourself, and he needs to blame congress because he needs to put pressure on congress. Just the polls that cnn released this morning, you see more Americans Trust republicans in congress than they trust the president to make the right decisions. He needs to reverse those numbers and he starts by putting the onus on congress for not moving the agenda. That is, he needs the American People needs to trust him to get things done and put pressure on congress to act, and his comments yesterday and his appearance to Mitch Mcconnell were constructive to that end. The fascinating about these numbers we have them up now. When you ask americans overall who they blame or trust more thats not the right one. Anyway, if you ask americans who you trust more, Americans Trust congress. But when you ask republicans specifically who they trust more, they trust the president more than congress. The president is winning this battle among the republican base, and i am wondering if you think thats what steve bannon sees here as hes really deciding to take on congress in the president s name . I try very hard to stay out of Steve Bannons head. I think its a scary place, to be honest with you. Steve bannon is trying to target president s that support the president s agenda 100 . I think President Trump should be more forceful in his condemnation in what bannon is trying to do, and thats target republican senators, and he needs to expand the majority. The best way he can implement his agenda is by sending more republican senators to washington, d. C. In next years mid terms. That will not happen if bannon is successful, and thats a problem for President Trump and his presidency. Well, every president doesnt like to take blame, but every president doesnt say i am without blame. Very true. Look, hes blaming, whether its congress or himself, and this is kind of a crazy speed they thought they would use to change the Health Care System and onesixth of the economy, and change the tax code and it took reagan 2 1 2 years to get it done, and what was he expecting . This is what comes when somebody has no experience in government. Its not like they tried two or three seasons with congress, they expected it to get done in five weeks. Very strange. Yeah, the blame he placed on not calling the families of the Fallen Soldiers we will talk about that in a moment. Ahead of us, no diplomacy for now. Very shortly the president will meet with james mattis, this after north korea seems to reject the idea of any diplomatic resolution to the Ongoing Nuclear battle. The regime telling cnn it has no interest in deescalating tension with the United States until it develops a missile that can reach the east coast. How significant is this change . Its not like they were eager to get to the table. Yeah, this is a message that was reiterated when i was in there, and they wanted to prove to the Trump Administration they have the capability to attack the u. S. And defend against attacks and they have to prove it by launching an actual ibcm in full range, and it would be the first above ground Nuclear Detonation the world has seen in 40 years, since china did it in 1980. It would be highly provocative. Another es kau latorre development is President Trumps visit to asia. He will come to a number of different Asian Companies here in japan, and china, japan, vietnam, the philippines and perhaps most significantly south korea. The president spoke at the white house about the possibility of visiting the border between north korea and south korea like every other u. S. President before him. Heres what he had to say. Do you intend to go to the dmz . I will go to china, japan, vietnam, we have a big economic summit there and i may go to the philippines, also. We have been invited to the philippines, and we may be going to the philippines. We have not set the details. Are you provoking north korea by going to the dmz . We will take a look at that. I didnt hear any terms of prau joking, but we will look at that. One, the United States could show strength by having President Trump visit the dmz, but what if he goes there and says something, like the little rocket man, and to Say Something like that in this highly sensitive and charged location where theres so much weaponry pointed back and forth, there are fears in the region that President Trumps presence there and saying something off script could really cause the situation to go downhill quickly. Thats what is being grappled with now ahead of trumps visit. His meeting later this morning with more top officials about what to do regarding north korea. Great point. Thank you very much. Joining us now, democratic congressman senator. Senator, sorry, we have it wrong in there, senator, we will give you your due. You just came back from south korea, and you said you left confused and shaken. Tell us more. I think the confusion is the message the administration is sending. Tillerson has tried to establish diplomatic channels to north korea, and President Trump told him not to do it in a series of tweets, and basically indulged in namecalling with the north korean leader, and its going to be necessary to have diplomacy here, because the consequences of a war are catastrophic on the peninsula. I would like to shift gears to niger. Four u. S. Servicemen were lost in the ambush in the african nation. You joined a chorus of people that led to their death, to that ambush. What questions do you have . First of all, there are questions about intelligence, were we aware of the capabilities and the intent of the isis forces that attacked this unit. The unit, as i understand it, was what they considered a routine Training Mission with troops from niger, and then they fell into a wellexecuted and wellcalculated ambush. We have to be conscious of what is the mission . Are we actively pursuing the isisbacked elements or are we training the army of niger. Do you think the administration has been forthcoming on this . The first we heard from the administration about it at all was yesterday at a press conference. Has the administration been forthcoming enough, senator . I dont think so. I think the administration has to be more clear about our role in niger and our role in africa and other parts of the globe. They have to connect it to a strategy. They should do that. I think the inattention, you know, to this issue is not acceptable. Again, you did hear the president yesterday when asked about it why he called the family members, he said he was writing letters, and he suggested past president s have never called, and he does more than that. What was your reaction to his initial response . I think thats gross mischaracterization of what previous president s have done. The president has an awesome responsibility as any president , but in my experience most have tried diligently to contact the families, and sometimes its difficult and they try to contact the families and they are very sensitive to the need to do that, and to the president , he seems to exhibit an insensitivity, and its something he would get to eventually. Thats not the case. We have to not only care for the families, but also care for those who have been wounded and i hope we do that. I also want to get you on a piece of legislation that has now costs a member of congress his potential job as drug czar, and thats tom moreno. We just learned moments ago hes out of the consideration to be drug czar as we battle the opioid epidemic, and you, as a member of congress, did not object to the Patient Access and affective Drug Enforcement act. Its that legislation that died the deas hands on getting how many of the opioid pills were bei being districted. Nobody objected to this, why . The presumption was the committee, and particularly the individuals directly involved in negotiating the legislation and the dea itself would not be harmful. And most are technical issues that are not controversial. This is one of the exceptions. What the remedy is is to immediately take steps to repeal the legislation and put in a Stronger Authority for the dea to crack down on the pharmacy companies. Did you read the entire bill before not objecting to it . The bill came out of the judiciary committee, was posted, my staff reviewed it and the comments to me it was noncontroversial. Unfortunately, it appears to be highly controversial and the step is to immed
