Its very dangerous. Its significant. On two levels. One this goes to senator rubios comments. One of the goals here is to bring discord and they want to bring confusion. Thats one way of interfering. Therefore, trying to undermine american democracy. The second level is very much about vladimir putin. You see these attacks on these conservative think tanks and conservative members. This is all about people who have been critical of vladimir putin. Its a very direct strike against those who are criticizing him and his leadership in russia. That also makes this extremely significant and worrisome. Lets listen to National Security adviser john bolton. He was on abc this weekend. I think what he said about other countries and potential election interference now is even more relevant given what we have seen overnight. Lets listen to him. I can say definitively that its a sufficient National Security concern about chinese meddling, iranian meddling and north korean meddling that were trying steps to try to prevent it. Its all four of those countries. Theres Something Different from what he did there than the president often says, well, it could be russia but it could be other ones, too. He is saying its russia and by the way, there are other nefarious actors as well. Whats your read . Well, redirecting a little bit away from the question. Trying to draw the focus off of russia and then again by doing so drawing the focus off President Trump and his constant tweets and the problems and concerns that he is causing within his own administration. We shouldnt be pollyanna and think countries dont engage in spying or espionage. President trump has held himself up to be a great deal maker, somebody who can sit across a Negotiating Table and you have to wonder all the branchs he continues to try to hand over to russia, he seems to be getting a dead stick in return from vladimir putin. Shouldnt putin be coming to the table maybe offering a detente on this espionage or a cooldown . We are seeing him increase it. Were seeing President Trump hasnt seemed to grasp it. The fact it was a private corporation, publically traded company but the private sector that found this, how important is that in terms of really everybody coming together to get at this . Clearly, intelligence government cant do it on their own. Thats right. I believe its very significant for microsoft to do this and get out in front of the federal government in saying what they found and what they have done about it. Sources tell cnn the president is unsettled over all of it. Theres important New Washington post reporting that notes that mcgahn doesnt think he said anything at all that implicated the president. least mcgahns attorney told the president s lawyers, there may have been 30 hours of them talking to investigators, but there was nothing in those 30 hours that implicated the president in any legal wrongdoing. Whats your read . Well, you know, i think the reason that the president and so many around him are unsettled by the revelations about don mcgahn over the weekend is that they dont know. They can give the president assurances about what he said. But the fact that the cooperation was so long and so extensive and it wasnt widely known, even in the white house that he was cooperating so extensively. You had trump tweet, i authorized all of this. Its fine. Nothing to worry about. That may be the case. We shouldnt assume just because he gave so much time to investigators that theres definitely something there or that he had turned on the president , because it does seem he does not believe that was the case. When it comes to the legal
strategy, which some like steve bannon are saying this is the worst legal strategy by the president s attorneys at the time, but it is what it is and it is what happened. Cnn learned the lawyers at that time when they were saying, go out and be as transparent, were calculating, they didnt have solid legal ground to stand on to fight this. Mcgahn is a federal employee. He would be compelled to be transparent and open. Here is how the president s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani now reads it. I knew not to worry about it because if the president said anything criminal to the counsel of the white house, mcgahn wouldnt be there now. Report back and we have nothing to be afraid of. When its framed as 30 hours, it seep seems like oh, my god. When you step back and think 30 hours over how much period of time . Three days. Three days . You know, still 30 all one day seems like when you spread it out over a few days, its not that bad. Mcgahn is channelling through his lawyers that, look, i didnt really say anything that hurt the president. Maybe the president should just let it be and let the chips fall where they may. I dont know. The former white House Counsel and independent counsel who i had on this show yesterday morning and last night said 30 hours is like, wow, big. Its a lot. I think, look, mcgahn may not have said anything himself that accused the president of wrongdoing, implicated the president of wrongdoing. He is giving investigators information. They can take that information and they can collate it with other information to connect the dots. When any witness gives information to investigators, they are not necessarily confessing or implicating or anything else. All of that information is extremely valuable to prosecutors or investigators who are looking to pool together a lot of information to make a case toward whatever they are making a case toward. I think one other thing thats important here is, so much of this has to do with the turnover that has happened in the white house in general and also specifically on the legal team. There have been so many lawyers come in and out and quit because
they didnt like the job, that there is a lot of confusion. Everybody is not necessarily on the same page with this stuff. Selena, on the issue of clearances, which is staying in the news cycle. The president is keeping it in the news cycle with his tweets this morning. Conservative radio host and also former editor at large of Breitbart New S ben shapiro sai. Trump likes pardons and Security Clearances, anything he can treat as a reward or punishment in this governmental version of the apprentice. He is a conservative radio host. He has been critical of the president when he thinks he needs to be. Is he right on that . Yeah. I actually dont think he is wrong on that. Look, i think brennan was a completely different animal than the rest of all of the other people that appear on television within our own network that talk that held high positions in intelligence like mr. Clapper. They were never saying they werent strident in their tone and in their analysis. They also werent calling his behavior treasonous. They werent going on twitter and being bombastic. Brennan approached this in a very political way. When you watch clapper and when you watch other people, you see its more measured, its more analytical. Brennan makes a great foil for the president.
