That drone was over iranian territory. Its huge. Known as the rq global hawk. Its the equivalent of a wing span of a boeing 757. It weighs eight tons. This is not a little drone that youre used to see. Lets get to the pentagon, Barbara Starr is there. What is centcom saying. Well, they are saying this was often unprovoked attack in International Airspace. Its worth thinking about why is that drone there in the first place. That drone is packed with ing s gathering information on what iran is up to. This is a drone that can fly for about 30 hours and can cover thousands of square miles of surveillance of airspace and land below. So this is a very key asset. Theres going to be a lot of questions about the capability of iranian surfacetoair missiles. That they were able to target this drone very clearly. Theres been a lot of concern that Iranian Missile capability is getting better, more precise, more able to target. This may be an example of those improvements. We will have to see. But as for a response, i think its fair to say the pentagon still, you know, very cautious about all of this. Theres no rush to war around here. Which pretty much is echoing i think what the president is saying. The president very concerned about it. The military sending troops to the region, for further deterrence against iran. But you are not seeing here, by any stretch, that sort of rampup like there was going to be some quick military response, military action. Well have to see. A lot of concern that this could always open some kind of miscalculation that would compel the u. S. To respond. Jim, poppy. Is it your understanding theres a split in the administration over how forcibly to respond not just to this, but the tanker attacks . The president has said publicly last night, that he does not want war. But you do have a republican senator like tom cotton, tough comments from john bolton and mike pompeo. Is there a split here and who is holding sway . Yeah, there is definitely a split, jim and the question is who changes that split. Youve seever secretary of state mike pompeo coming out and saying they are responsible for the tanker attacks, et cetera, but then youre seeing the president downplay tell, saying he doesnt want to go to warrer with iran. What were waiting on is a white house response to this. And we know they are going to hold a meeting developing their response to this to iran shooting down the drone. Because so far, neither the white house nor the National Security council has commented publicly on this. And the president hasnt said anything on his twitter feed either. In that meeting, were told that the president is not expected to attend right now. But barbara is being told by an official that the outgoing defense secretary Patrick Shanahan is expected to attend as well as the incoming defense secretary. We do know that theyre working on some kind of response to this and thats essentially what were waiting to hear. Barbara starr at the pentagon, Kaitlan Collins at the white house. Great to have you on the story. For reaction, u. S. Retired admiral in the navy kirby. Im sure you admiral kirby have been in meetings taking place at the white house right now. We look for precedent for a country shooting down a u. S. Drone of this size and capacity and capability here. Couldnt find one. What is the reciprocal response for Something Like this . What kind of options are being discussed at the white house . I suspect that theyre looking at a full range, jim. This could be a diplomatic response because this was not in iran airspace. And then from a military perspective, i doubt seriously that theyre going to look for tit for tat kinetic military response if they could further escalate it. But there are further options you could play out in an overt way. You could put more forces in those international waters. Put more ships in the strait of hormuz. You could demonstrate the presence there in a more over vert way. You could explore perhaps cybercapabilities to limit the capabilities that go on the iranian side. I suspect theyre looking at the full range here and what im really glad to see, jim, there is an inner agency discussion going on this morning. We have not traditionally seen that out of this administration. Its usually whatever the president decides to tweet and policy done by twitter. Im glad to see theyre having what we would consider in the Obama Administration a more normal inneragency discussion about this. Do you from your guidelines, appear to be at least from administration, at least talk about iran and because the president last night on fox news asked about it, his words, quote, dont worry about a thing. And he told Time Magazine this week, when asked if he was considering military options from iran, he said, i wouldnt say that. And then the reaction from boston, pompeo, this sunday on fox, its very different and as jim pointed out senator tom cotton. Is that a normal division or something to be concerned jab. Thats a very careful question. In any administration, certainly in the Obama Administration, there were differences of opinion and they were hashed out. Particularly over syria. There were differences of opinion over the state department and house and how to stem that solution to that. But they didnt air out so ugly wait theyre doing now over media and social media, in particular. And its very clear, if you just look at the Public Comments some of which you cited and some cited over the weekend between pompeo and bolton calling for regime change whatever that means and trump saying i dont want war, dont worry about it. Clearly, the president is in a different place than some of his most key advisers. What im glad to see and hope comes out of the meeting this morning is some sort of reconciliation so the president is teed up with options of a more unified nature. And hes able and its available to him to make a reasonable decision going forward. Let me ask you, admiral skishbskish kirby, if its in International Airspace, where it should be able to have safe passage, right . Right. Is that an act of war to shoot down another countrys aircraft over International Airspace . Im not a legal scholar, jim. I dont know if id go so far as to say its illegal. And its an escalation that frankly im surprise they had took. An expert said iran is up to trying to boil up the pressure on trump where not necessarily crossing a threshold where he thinks he has to go to war. Whether that causes that, i dont think it will. It actually to some degree could give the administration a chance to bring in the International Community here. And one response you might see, jim, as a result of this, because it was National Airspace over international waters, from a military perspective, maybe again putting more ships in the strait of hormuz. Flying more resereconnaissance flights that were not cowled out of this. And certainly an option that over iranian airspace they wouldnt have. Were glad to have your expertise. Rear admiral john kirby. Happening on capitol hill, the House Judiciary Committee is holding another public hearing. This one again kind of like with john dean on the lesson from mueller report. Were watching to see whether the chairman jerry nadler says anything about former director hope hicks who refused to answer any questions during her closeddoor testimony yesterday. Her claim from white house lawyers, blanket immunity. Im not sure what that is. Manu raju is on capitol hill. What are you hearing, because the democrats say its no downside to say no to everything. Yeah, the democrats are prepared to go to court to fight out a number of fights, but particularly this one over hope hicks. They claim, or the white houses claim of absolute immunity saying she could not answer any questions about her time in the white house will not pass muster in court. Expect that to happen in the coming days. Well get more details what she actually said behind closed doors when the transcript of that testimony is released later today or tomorrow. We do expect chairman nadler to discuss what he learned from hope hicks during the opening remarks, well see how much he reveals here. So, were getting a little more information but still not satisfying what democrats have been demanding. And were seeing an uptick for a number of democrats saying its time for an impeachment inquiry. Last night, a friend of nancy pelosi came out and said she spoke to the speaker about that, ahead of time. The speaker tried to convince her, did not try to dissuade her in going public. But she argued its important to go forward to hem her case in court. Interestingly, she said the speaker did not necessarily agree with her about that topic, about that it would help their case in court. But youre seeing while some remembers of the rank and file are pushing for impeachment, some still saying no. Democratic contenders piling on after biden touts working with a segregationist in the past. Plus, the fbi and a bomb plot in pittsburgh. More an an alleged tenpoint plan to attack a church there, of course, that comes after the horrible synagogue shooting in pittsburgh. This as former Vice President joe biden is refusing to apologize for some controversial remarks he made about working with segregationist senators in the past. Heres what he said this week, quote, i was in a caucus with james o. Eastland. He never called me boy. He always called me son. And biden went on to say, guess what, at least theres some civility. We got things done. We didnt agree on much of anything. We got things done. Several opponents of biden in the 2020 race are taking major issue with that. And the way that he seemed to talk about these senators in a rather warm way. Senator cory booker took issue with bidens use of the word boy. Booker demand that biden apologize. Biden is not apologizing, hes firing back with this. Are you going to apologize . Apologize for what . Corey should apologize, he knows better. His posture is ive done nothing wrong, you should apologize, im not a racist is so insulting. I should never apologize for doing that. And Vice President biden shouldnt need this lesson. Lets talk about this with the National Political reporter for the new york times. And julie herchfield davis with the times. Let me begin with you, what have we learned in the last 24 hours about the frontrunner in the democratic primary . Well, i think what we learned is similar to things that weve already known about the Vice President. He has often praised what he called a bygone era of civility in the senate. And that sometimes comes with these figures, figures are open ly racialists. And he said hes going to be forced to change that language. With some his advisers and even supporters were shocked with the way he was characterizing his relationships with those senators. They said, if you want to talk about bipartisanship, why not mention other republicans, not the most controversial of them. And we know democrats are going to seize on this to create differences to stand out. Whats interesting, julie, this until new. Back in 97, biden said about strom thurmond, he has written about it in the past. In his book in 2007, he eulogized one of them saying he moved to the good side and was a brave man. This isnt new. Im interested if hes harmal to biden or James Clyburn protects biden on this. If youre Vice President biden right now, youre very happy to have jim clyburn on your side on this issue. I think this points out a bigger problem for him. And not just on this question of race. But i think this is something that he has run across on a variety of fronts so far in his run, which is, basically, not having changed, saying the same think he said for decades. Youre right, this has been a very consistent thread not just from him, but there are have been comments from him and other democrats and republicans, harkening back to this civility in the senate. Times have changed. This is todays senate and todays american politics are different than they were even back in 1987, certainly 20 years before that, when he first arrived on capitol hill. I think a lot of voters, a lot of africanamericans, a lot of democrats and a lot of republicans feel thats not acceptable anymore. When joe biden got to the senate there were a lot of segregationists on capitol hill. And there was a lot between the two sides, they were able to Work Together and they differed very sharply over questions of race. But if you had a member of congress now who said the same thing, that would be a big thing and controversial. No its an interesting point, a lot of these senators we have talked about in the past who were segregationists were democrats. Im sorry to cut you short. We have breaking news out of the Supreme Court. Lets get to jessica schneider. Poppy, as we head into the final days here of the Supreme Courts term a decision that affects peace cross in maryland. A 40foot peace cross that honors world war i veterans may in fact stand. There was a challenge to the constitutionality of this cross standing on stateowned land. But the Supreme Court says it may stand. It does not violate the establishment clause of the constitution. The Supreme Court saying this cross, because it has a historical purpose does not violate the mandated purpose between church and state. For background, this is a peace cross erected way back in 1945. These were mothers of 49 Fallen Soldiers who decided to erect this peace cross. 40feet high. And they wanted to do it to replicate what they saw overseas. And the crosses that marked the graves of american servicemen over there. This has been standing for quite some time, but in 2012, a group of residents in ma
