CNNW CNN Right Now With Brianna Keilar October 21, 2019
But walk us through what you heard. Reporter this is a pretty wideranging
Cabinet Meeting
where you saw the president at the beginning already taking questions. We saw lengthy
Cabinet Meeting
s in the past, brianna, and this is another one that seemed to go on and on, the president talking about his grievances in the beginning, everything from impeachment to criticism hes facing over his syria decision. Then at the end not answering a question about the job security of his chief of staff
Mick Mulvaney
who of course cnn has reported on at length, noting that right before this impeachment inquiry got kicked off, there were questions about just how long
Mick Mulvaney
was going to be in this job and who it is that could potentially replace him. During this
Cabinet Meeting
that the president had, he was talking about his decision to bring those troops out of vir ya, and brianna, the president told him he believed he made the right decision, that he knew more than the pundits who had been criticizing that move, though a lot of the fire have been coming from his own party and military experts saying the president pulled this off way too abruptly while he was in there. He also talked about impeachment, saying it was just a tactic by the democrats. Theyre trying to essentially do that because they dont think theyll be able to win in 2020. Its something hes said the last couple weeks and something hes sticking to, as this heats up on capitol hill, as youre seeing current and previous officials going to testify even though they said they were not going to cooperate. Its clearly taking over the president. And one big thing was the president talking about that sudden decision, that reversal that he made over the weekend to not hold that g7 summit, the summit of
World Leaders
in the
United States
next year, at his own property in doral in miami after he was facing a ton of criticism not just from people who are typically allies of the president. They said he is already facing several decisions on capitol hill with this impeachment probe. The president still defending it saying it would have been a
Good Property
but saying its not going to be held there, brianna. Thank you for walking us through that. I want to discuss this with a former adviser for the trump team, and
Gloria Borger
here as well. Trump often choreographs whats going on, right . So the fact hes saying to republicans, basically, i need your support, tells us what . Tells us he understands he has some problems. And we know from over the weekend when he decided he wasnt going to host the g7 at the doral, we know that was because republicans were complaining about it. They were saying, there are only so many balls we can juggle for you at one time, and this is one too many. Were going to drop this one. So he pulled back on that. Its very rare for him to kind of listen that way. He wouldnt ever say its a mistake, but he did listen because he knows they have a lot on their plate in terms of defending him which they are not doing on
Something Like
syria and they are defending him so far on impeachment. Well see. What we heard of this
Cabinet Meeting
, we are awaiting tape of this
Cabinet Meeting
. It is something thats not broadcast live so we have to do whats called turning the tape and physically the pool is in the process in the white house of doing that. As soon as we get that very soon, were going to bring that to you. I do think it tells you that he recognizes he has some problems here, and its not just the fact that there was such a backlash against that decision he made about the g7 and putting it at the doral, which a lot of republicans felt like they would want to defend. But its also, as gloria mentioned, people have not been going out aggressively defending his conduct in the ukraine matter. Theyve said hes not done anything impeachable, theyve said maybe i would have worded it differently, but you do not see a lot of republicans going out and mounting a really
Strong Defense
of, you know, this is why everything the president did was absolutely fine. And i think that he feels that lack of willingness to the part of a lot of republicans to go ahead and apologize for behavior that, a, many of them are not comfortable with, and b, many of them dont know where its going to end. You have these depositions that keep on going, this investigation is expanding, not ending any time soon, and a lot of them feel like they dont know which shoe is going to drop and they dont want to get out ahead of this thing. If youre trump, you feel that and you feel, where are the people who are supposed to be defending me . We hear him voice that quite often, right . Every time we hear testimony from the hill from a diplomat who was involved in this, were getting a new headline that does not help
President Trump
. Hes finding out in realtime, too, j. W. The question will be, is the president going to get that support from republicans hes looking for . I think todays
Cabinet Meeting
is a sign of weakness. I think hes on his back heels. Hes not used to being in that position. Power is fluid and it goes to wherever power is perceived. I think on the hill hes perceived as weak right now. Senators have been skeptical of him since the election. It was a marriage of convenience. That marriage, i think, is coming to a close. As we get closer and closer to subject republicans not worrying about being primaried, hell be a lot more comfortable speaking out. Some of the leaders here like collins, like senator makowsky continue speaking out. And
Mick Mulvaney
is someone youre familiar with because he did offer you a position at jvb. And i helped in the confirmation. Some people have not been helpful,
Rudy Giuliani
and
Mick Mulvaney
where he admitted this military aid was held up in order for ukraine to investigate democrats. He unsuccessfully tried walking that back this weekend. What do you think about where
Mick Mulvaney
and what his stature is in the white house right now and also how hes been doing, quite frankly . Ive watched mick. I consider him a friend, i hope he still considers me one. I helped him through confirmation. Spent five hours trying to get him under the hot lights. Ive seen him under pressure. Hes smart, hes tough. I have bone take on last week. That was simply he was trying to correct the political career of people at omb, and he wanted to show they were under a mixed set of reasons for doing what theyre doing in withholding the money. Then he puts on his chief of staff hat the problem is hes wearing too many hats now he tries to put on the chief of staff hat and protect the president , and thats impossible when youre talking omb. The president throws off the moral compass of everyone around him. I would say, make, itick, its late. Its too late for giuliani. Its not too late for mick. Did you read that there is some selfpreservation going on the last few days . I think so, and our reporting showed that he was interesting in leaving before all of this occurred. And that, in fact, maybe now after this has occurred, maybe theyre looking for some kind of a soft landing for him or or maybe not such a soft landing. Or maybe not such a soft landing. Its rarely soft. Even before this, there was a sense that there was, a, someone unhappy with him at the white house. Lets listen to the tape. If anyone has any questions, please feel free. Do you maintain a limited number of troops in syria. We dont think its going to be necessary. I dont want to leave troops there. We had 28 troops, as it turned out. People said 50, it was 28. You had an army on both sides of those troops. Those troops would have been wiped out. I dont think its necessary, other than we secured the oil. Its in a little different section but we did secure the oil. And the other region where weve been asked by israel and jordan to leave a small number of troops is a totally different section of syria near jordan and close to israel. And thats a totally different section, thats a totally different mindset. So we have a small group there, and we secured the oil. Other than that, there is no reason for it, in our opinion. Again, the kurds are going to be watching. Were working with the kurds. We have a
Good Relationship
with the kurdsme. But we never agreed to protect the kurds. We supported them for three and a half years. We never agreed to suppoprotect kurds for the rest of their lives. I thought, its a little strange were fighting with the kurds when we just spent 4 trillion on iraq and now were going to be fighting iraq. So i said, were not going to take a position. Let them fight themselves. Everyone said the kurds would do very well. Iraq moved and the kurds left. A lot of people are good when they fight with us. When you have 10,000 worth of arm a arms. They were fighting isis. But where is an agreement that says we have to stay in the middle east for the rest of humanity, for the rest of civilization to protect the kurds. We never said that. And we have protected them. Weve taken very good care of them. And i hope theyre going to watch over isis because thats again, most of it is not in the safe zone, as we call it. Some places are called demilitarized zone. In the old days, we would call areas like this a demilitarized zone. A relationship with the kurds is good, and theyre going to be safe. And i will say this. If shooting didnt start for a couple of days, i dont think the kurds would have moved,ly. It was so nasty that when we went to turkey and we went to the kurds, they agreed to do things they had never done before the shooting started. If they didnt go through two and a half days of hell, i dont think they would have done it. People have been trying to make this deal for years. But were close to making it. Well see what happens. Again, theyve been fighting for 300 years that we know of. 300 years. So why should we put our soldiers in the midst of two large groups, hundreds of thousands, potentially, of people that are fighting . I dont think so. I dont think so. What are you talking about . I think the democrats fight dirty. There are lousy politicians with lousy policy. They want open borders. They dont care about crime. They want sanctuary cities. They dont care about drugs. They dont care about almost anything. They dont care about usmca, how about that . I think theyre lousy politicians. But two things they have. Theyre vicious and they stick together. They dont have mitt romney in their midst. They dont have people like that. They stick together. You dont see two break off. Thats why i respect so much what i saw with will hurd today. He was one of the three that didnt seem to be there but he made a statement. This thing is all about a letter that was perfect. You never hear the letter anymore. It was all about whistleblowers. You never hear, what happened to the whistleblower . Theyre gone because theyve been discredited. What happened to the informant . And where is the i. G. . Why didnt the i. G. Read the transcript he could have gotten it, im sure. Why didnt he read this and then see the whistleblowers account was totally different than the letter . Then he would have said, oh, there is no problem here. The whistleblower gave a false account. Now you have to say, well, doily. They have them like theyre angels. Do we have to protect somebody who gave a fully honest account of what happened. What about the informant . I dont think there was an informant. The whistleblower had second and thirdhand information. You remember that, it was a big problem. But the information was wrong. So was there actually an informant . Maybe the informant was schiff. In my opinion, its possibly schiff. Why didnt schiff say he and his staff, or his staff, ear . This is a very crippled country. Im trying to get out of wars but we may have to get wars, too . Were better prepared than weve ever been. If eye can you imagine . I have to fight off these low lives and at the same time i have to negotiate these other things, so thats why we are right now. [ inaudible question ] well, theyre going to be sent initially to different parts, get prepared, and then were ultimately bringing them back home. Were bringing our troops back home. I got elected on bringing our soldiers back home. Its not very popular near. I have 25,000 people close in that arena, a record crowd. I had so many. Were building the wall, thats number one, and number two and probably tied with number one is were bringing our soldiers back home. That was our largest year in dallas. Great place. Great state, texas. Tough state. Theyre tough. When i said were bringing our soldiers back home, the place went crazy. But within the beltway, people dont like it. It would be much easier for me to let our soldiers be there, let them continue to die. I go out to dover and meet parents and its the most unpleasant thing i do. When i see that big cargo plane open and i see those coffins get rolled off, or when i go to
Walter Reed Hospital
where the doctors are incredible, by the way. Saving people who never could have been saved five years ago, you know that. Those people are horribly wounded, horribly, horribly wounded. Wounded warriors. Its the toughest thing i do. Toughest thing is sending letters. I send many letters home to parents, and i speak to parents. But i send many letters home to parents where their son or daughter has been killed over in the middle east. For what . For what . There are times to fight, and there are times not to fight. There are times to be smart. We have tremendous economic power and were using our economic power. Much more powerful in certain ways than playing with guns. Theyre much better for our country and much better for everybody. And actually much better for humanity, okay . Thank you, everybody, i appreciate it. Thank you very much. Doral was a very simple situation. I own a property in florida. I was going to do it at no cost or give it free if i got a ruling, because there is a rule about giving a contribution to a business. I give away my salary. I guess its close to 450,000. I give it away. Nobody ever said he gives away a salary, now it comes up because of this. But i give away my president ial salary. They say no other president has done it. Im surprised, to be honest with you. They said
George Washington
may have been the only other president to do that. See whether or not obama gave up his salary. See if the other favorites gave up their salary. They say its the only one. They think
George Washington
did, but its not a lot of money, 450,000, and i give that up. I have a place thats in the best location. Im very good in real estate, very, very good. Much better than you even understand. When i give you my financials, youll say, hes much better than we thought. This guy knows right here, mnuchin. He knows very much what i have. Someday maybe hell tell you. But im very good at real estate. In miami, everybody would have been their own building. Everybody in the g7 would have had their own building. Florida loved it, they love economic development. Its a beautiful place, its new, its been totally rebuilt. Everything is good. Massive meeting rooms, unlimited for security because its on hundreds of acres. The best location. Right next to the airport, miami international, one of the biggest airports in the world. Some say its the biggest, but one of the biggest airports in the world. Its only minutes away. It would have been great. But the democrats went crazy. Even though i would have done it free, i get more promotion than any human being that recall. The people that like me and the people that dont like me. But i would have been willing to do this for free and it would have been the greatest g7 ever. And i would have said to my family, because they run my business i dont run my business. I actually put all the stuff in trusts. And i didnt have to do that, but under no obligation, i dont know if you know it,
George Washington
. There werent too many rich president s, but tlmp a few. They run their own business. Obama made a deal for a book. Is that running a business . Im sure he didnt even discuss it while he was president. He has a deal with netflix. When did they
Start Talking
about that . Thats only a couple of examples. But other president s, if you look, other president s were wealthy. Not huge wealth. George washington was actually considered a very, very rich man at the time. But they ran their businesses. George washington, they say, had two desks. He had a president ial desk and a business desk. I dont think you people with this phony emoluments clause by the way, i would say it costs about 200,000 to be president. I have the best business, i have the best properties. Between what i lose, and in all fairness, some properties. Doral is an example. Doral was setting records when i bought it, because i owned it for a period of time. Setting records. It was making a fortune. Then what happened . I announce im going to run for office, right . And i say, we got to build a wall, we have to have borders, we have to have this and that, and all of a sudden some people didnt like it. They thought the rhetoric was too tough. Its timely coming back, i understand, very strongly. Doral was setting records. And i knew this would happen. Most of the stuff that i have, because now instead of having 100 of the market that loves you and they love your brand and its luxury and its great, now you have 50 of the market. I fully understood that. Its cost me between 2 billion and 5 billion, and if i had it to do again, i would do it in an instant. Because who cares . If you can afford it, what difference does it make . Im making a big difference for the country. The country is stronger now than its been in many years, maybe ever. Our military is being built, our economy is hitting numbers. The best employment numbers. Wee were strong. Were bringing our homeless back from the endless wars. So whether i lost 200 billion. Im doing this for the country. Im doing it for the people. I didnt have an empty seat at the rally. I go into these massive basketball arenas like in dallas where the mavericks play and fill it up and set a record. I take less than musicians because they have bands. I dont have a band. I set the world record for someone without a guitar. I dont have bands. Thats the stouffry. I have my own polls now. Pelosi, shifty schiff, schumer, these people are trying to destroy the country. Its a very bad thing what theyre doing. The president of the

But i would have been willing to do this for free and it would have been the greatest g7 ever. And i would have said to my family, because they run my business i dont run my business. I actually put all the stuff in trusts. And i didnt have to do that, but under no obligation, i dont know if you know it,
George Washington. There werent too many rich president s, but tlmp a few. They run their own business. Obama made a deal for a book. Is that running a business . Im sure he didnt even discuss it while he was president. He has a deal with netflix. When did they
Start Talking about that . The president of the
United States should be allowed to run the country, not have to focus on this kind of crap while at the same time doing a great job on syria and turkey and all the other things we have. North korea, maybe someday, but ill tell you what. If somebody else became president with that same mindset that they had, you would right now be in a billing war. Could happen. I always say, who knows lz sdplz in the meantime, i like kim, he likes me, i respect him, he respects me. You could end up in a war. President obama told nae me he won call me. He called me. Lack of respect. But he takes my call. Thank you, everybody. What are plans for the g7 now . Well look at other locations. It wont be as exciting, it wont be as good. I know france had a budget of many, many millions of dollars. Its going to cost a fortune for the country. I was willing to do it for free, but people didnt like that. They thought i would be making some promotional value. Do you believe it is a f foregone conclusion that the house will impeach . I think they will. This can be the way our great founders wanted this to be. I see this congressman al green say, we have to impeach him, otherwise hes going to pin the electi electioning. We have to impeach him because otherwise hes going to win. I have the strongest economy ever. Its the, the strongest economy in country. Since november 8. The day i got elected, from there until july 20, the market went through the roof. Do you know why it went through the roof . Because they got rid of obama, they got rid ofme. The 401 k s would go down the tubes. They would go down 70 or 80 and destroy the country. I think they want to impeach me because its the only way theyre going to win. They have nothing. They had a phone call chfwhich perfect. All they have is a whistleblower. The second whistleblower hot kircht. Theyre interviewing ambassadors who ive never heard of. I have
Great Respect for some of them. One of them said just recently, a very, very highly respected man im not going to get into their names. But he said, oh, no, we were very, very bothered by joe biden and his son back during the obama administration. Dont forget, of these people were put there during obama, during clinton, during the never trump or bush era. Those people might be worse than the nevertrumpers. Theyre dying fast. Theyre on artificial r respiration. They want to impeach, and they want to do as drit cal. I have to do what i have to do. Ill tell you what. I want to bring our soldiers back home. If people want to leave them there, ill take that every day. All i know is you were in dallas. All i know is the place bent crazy when itsd i have to do what i got elect id second guess myself, i think we can do as well or better, frankly. Its artificial to have these soldiers walking up and down between two big countries. By the way, im just informed larry kudlow is going to to stay if you want. After that whole thing, larry, get up and go get it. Ly. Lets take a look at this because there is a lot to digest itly one of the things he stressed was the democrats want him out via geech many and lets also talk about lets just factcheck some things, shall we . Bu one of the things he was talking about was based on doral, the fact he was going to have the g7 summit at his own resofrt. He pulled back and discovered that the president is not supposed to make money from foreign interests. He called it the phony emmoluments clause. Well, guess what . You can read it right there on his screen. Pez pit was run by a preside. He talked about a book. None of that was done while president obama was president. It was a long time afterward. He also said he was talking about the whistleblower who was the one who put out put forth a complaint about the president s call with the informant. He said the whistleblower has gone with the informant, because remember the whistleblower had sources in the white house who was talking to this person. He said informant. There was more than one source according to the whistleblower complaint. He said it may have been adam schiff. That is not based on any sort of reality or any sort of reporting. What we know is that the whistleblower complaint which hews very closely with the discussion he had with the head of ukraine, this was informed by white house officials. Gloria, j. W. , was there anything else there . I think you covered it. He was clearly defensive on syria and the syria decision as well, and kept going back to the
Campaign Rally in dallas saying, you know, the place went crazy when i said were going to bring our troops back home. What i think were witnessing here is a president who is nervous, he is worried, he is full of grievance. I think we saw his inner dialogue in a funny way go public. This is what he is thinking. And as he weaves these conspiracy theories about schiff being the whistleblower and emmolumen emmoluments, we got a glimpse into his real thoughts. One thing about donald trump, he tells you what hes thinking and it can be disconcerting at the very least. It does not feel cohesive or linear for sure. Lets talk about syria, because he was saying it would be much easier for me to let our soldiers be there, let them continue to die, i go out to dover and meet parents. Its the most unpleasant thing i do. He said it would be easier for him to leave soldiers over there to die. This is a commander thing and no president has talked about this in such visceral terms the dignified transfer. Yes, and people generally do not talk about this. They go there silently, maybe they talk with their families. Clearly the president feels like hes undertake about this decisi decision. Youve also heard him say, the kurds are very happy with us. Weve seen the kurds tloeld reca totally recall. He knows this is not a huge problem for him. Im the one who. The fact it was done with no semblance of strategy, it was so rhetoric. We could have arranged for something with the kurds. I just want to state, you cannot liken what was going on in syria to say what is going on in afghanistan. The sheer number of troops, the risk to life. Were talking about, yes, it is dangerous but the degree of danger for those syrian numbers in syria was small. If you talked to someone who was deployed there, they werent worried about their safety the way they would be if they were deploying to another conflict. He seems to be betting on the fact that most people dont know the difference, that sir dwra is afghanistan, that its been going on for all of these years, theres all these troops there. Theyre not the same thing. At wunt point did he describe a military session as playing with guns at one point . He doesnt make a distinction between the two platsces, he doesnt make a distinction between the two engagements. What he kept coming back to you with was his crowds love him for having done it. When he talked about bringing people home, bringing the troops home, he was referring to syria. People may hear
Something Else but theres a huge cheer. If thats whats driving the policy or the strategy here he says its not popular inside the beltway but he didnt talk about the generals who may disagree with him. Inside the beltway, you have a lot of experts on
Foreign Policy who know what theyre talking about, and theyll say this move to pull troops out means in the long run youre putting more troops lives in dachk. Thats a concern. Thats a concern to service members, too. I want to go back to the lives he said about emmolument. Does he realize what hes doing, doouchk . Im not comfortable with calling any part. Hes tired of the elections, he doesnt like words on powerpoint displacement. Ultimately this comes down to donald trump has been successful because he lovers the limelight, he loves drama. Part of it is having time in his life right now, but he dent roe realize his style makes this so much worse, because the impeachment process needs to resonate with the american people. He was talking about how all the democrats stick together, but republicans, i have romney i have to deal with. Thats enough, but it was clear that he sees the cement cracking a little bit among republicans and hes nervous about that. Or, you know, it sort of set him off. But i think youre right, too, in some ways this was talking points that he was reading to the republicans, and his woulden allibe allies who wishes would be more aggressive in defending him. There will be this res, when the whistleblower kplachbt firstly, and then he sort of draw arnl, or he throws the skpkt same attack on someone else so he wants to shift the focus on anybody but him. They threw rocks and say the u. S. Abandoned them as they had to leave violently. Trump defended the troops. We have a small group there and we secured the oil. There is no reason for it, in our opinion. Were working with the kurds, we have a
Good Relationship with the occurred but we never agreed to protect the kurds. We fought with them for three and a half or four years. We never agreed to protect the kurds for the rest of their lives. Im going to bring in nick paton walsh. Hes been following this troop drawdown on the ground in northern syria. Nick, tell us what youre witnessing and just factcheck from the president. Reporter yes, the
United States never agreed to protect the kurds for the rest of their life times, that is true. The partnership they had to fight isis was mutually be beneficial but the kurds did most of the dying with sons and daughters. Many more realistic views that eventually that relationship would begin to wind down. Donald trump also said only 28 soldiers were withdrawn from the lines, and had they stayed there, they would have been wiped out from the fighting. Not true. Both were in a security mechanism and were preventing fighting from breaking out. Its no accident that
President Trump had to pull them out before this incursion began. No way they would have protected americans as that incursion began. You can see from those images i think its fair to understand that the troops, sadly some of whom they pelted with rotten vegetables as they left. Those troops are acting on orders, but donald trump has left them to face their own devices, apparently, and to maybe fight their own regime. He also said they were securing the oil. Nobody quite knew what he meant there, but it turns out they will be leaving 200, maybe 300 soldiers behind in syria to continue the fight against isis but also preotecting the oil fields in the south. Completely useless to a country that can take on their own. We see an endless convoy moving all the way through at times, it seems, lots of locals coming out and shouting at them, even in the night, as they go to iraq in kurdistan. Some will stay behind but theyre simply going on about the same job in a much worse position. There are those on the front line doing the dying for them. They have moscow assistance. All eyes, brianna, really on whats coming up tomorrow. That is between turkey and russia. Potentially the real deal gets made there, not the one we heard in onkar last weekend. We find out whether they get more aggressive. Back to you. Nick, thank you for that report from northern syria. The president has held back his offer to hold the g7 at his doral resort in miami. He wasnt happy about it, though. We never agreed to protect the kurds for the rest of their lives. We dont think its going to be necessary. I dont want to leave troops there. We had 28 troops, as it turned out. People said 50, it was 28. And you had an army on both sides of these troops. I dont think we secured the oil. A dirchlt trying to explain the u. S. Pullout from syria which has come under so much criticism. Leet talk about what he said when it came to his business dealings. He made big news lars week when he decided to have the g7 summit of leaders from around the world come to his resort. Obviously so many options in the u. S. , but he opted for them to come to hids resort, and that posed constitutional issues. You saw the president reverse his decision using democrats and the media as no, the president doesnt listen to democrats, he lissened to republicans, particularly those that were at camp david this week. They told him it was bad, they told him it had the appearance of impropriety. When is what representative roongny did. He retreated because he was losing his base. The president is skating on thin ice these days and the ice is melting. He said, congressman. I mean, he was clearly not happy with how this all went down. He talked up doral, almost gave it an advertisement for its various features and he referred to the emoluments clause as phony. The emoluments clause in the constitution, which says a president cant be enriched by foreign interests. What did you think of him saying that about the emoluments clause . As the chairman of the subcommittee of the constitution, it struck me as a we take an oath to uphold the constitution, we reveer most of the work of james mad song and our
Founding Fathers who grew the constitution, to say that was a slap at our
Founding Fathers, disrespect for the constitution to which he takes an oath, and the most sacred paper most sacred document in this country. And he says its phony. Well, the impeachment clause isnt phony, the separation of powers arent phony, and there are a lot of things he may think are phony that are american and he was disrespectful of our nations heritage and our nations founders. Do you think thats something that your republican colleagus s will be upset by . They probably will be, they may or may not say it, there are so many of them holding their tongues, if you looked on the other side of the aisle, there are half of them holding their tongues. Congressman, we appreciate you joining us. Congressman steve cohen joining us from the capitol, thank you, sir. Youre welcome, brianna. Mitt romney admits hes the one behind a secret tweter account.
