CNNW CNN Tonight With Don Lemon May 3, 2017

General, sally yates is prepared to testify before the Judiciary Committee next week. That she gave a forceful warning to the white house, to advice michael flynn. This is three weeks before he was fired, contradicting the administrations version of events. Yates told white House Counsel that flynn was lying, when he discussed u. S. Sonkss on russia in conversations with russias ambassador to the u. S. , sergei kislyak. His misleading comments made him vulnerable to being compromised by russia. The yates meeting took place on january 26th. On february 10th, two weeks later, President Trump said he was unaware of reports on flynn. Three days after that, on february 13th, the Washington Post published a story that flynn had lied to Vice President pence about his conversations with the russian ambassador. Flynn resigned that night. The next day on february 14th, sean spicer described the yates meeting in january, in far less serious terms. Just to be clear, the acting attorney general informed the white House Counsel that they wanted to give, quote, a heads up to us on some comments that may have seemed in conflict with what he had sent the Vice President out in particular. His testimony will be the first time the acting attorney general will speak about that white house meeting. A source familiar with the situation, says yats will be limited on what she can tell the committ committee. Many of the details are classified. Her previously scheduled appearance in front of the house intelligence committee, that was canceled by devin nunes. Sparking outcry from democrats who believed he was trying to shield the white house, don, from damaging, new revelations. Jim shud tsciutto. I appreciate that. I want to bring in michael moore, the former u. S. Attorney for the middle district of georgia. Good evening to you. Michael, im going to start with you. You know sally yates. You know her well. Whats your reaction to this reporting . Im not surprised shes coming to testify. I think eits been long awaited. Shes protective of her department and her professional reputation and her integrity. Everybody will look forward to her testimony. I agree what she will have to give will be limited. There will be other information that will be classified. I think were going to hear everything out in the public hearing. But her information will, the same time, likely be in the area of timing. It will tell us when people knew things, the sequence of events that happen. And that will be interesting. Frankly, i dont know thats going to help mike pence. I just think its unfathomable that this information was delivered to the white house by the acting attorney general and mike pence claims to have no knowledge of it, despite the fact he was heading the transition at that time. There may be more things that come to light as the testimony and the hearings go on. Obviously, i have Great Respect for sally and i can tell you this you can put your money on what she says. People already saying that she is an obama appointee, is republicans, right . Obama appointee, democratic operative. What do you say to people that are questioning her integrity and motivations . Thats a ridiculous argument for them to make. Sally has worked for the department more than 20 years. She served under president s and attorneys general that have been republicans and democrats. She handled herself with great professionalism. That argument if you think about it this way, Jeff Sessions is a republican appointee. Does that mean that every time he looks at a case or his department makes a decision about a case that might impact or indict someone who is a democrat that we need to look at it skeptically . The lady justice, which is a figure that a lot of us sees and hangs in the department, theres a statue there. Lady justice is supposed to be blind. It doesnt look to see if youre a democrat or a republican. We count on the professionals that work on the department of justice, to make decisions regardless of the party, regardless of the person and regardless of the personal feelings that he may have about his or her political affiliations. The white house waited 18 days from when yates warned the white house to when flynn was fired. We broke it on the program. There was a drip, drip, drip. Is this delay problematic for the white house . I think so. We havent talk about it a whole lot because the Russian Investigation has gone still for the time being w. When it was hot and heavy, we talked about the straw that breaks the camels back. Its a straw that is put on top of this camel. We see fbi director james comey testify in public, that we will show here live. It will revive the investigation discussion around the russian ties or alleged ties with those that were close to President Trump. I think that its problematic. You really have to wonder when did Vice President pence actual know . And why did it take them 18 days . Not to be facetious. But what does a forceful warning mean. I gave him a stern warning. Thats what we dont know. Some reports said that yates told them that flynn would be open to blackmail because of the discrepancies in his testimony, publicly and what he said privately, with kiss kislyak. We dont know. The public is going to know about this 18day gap in times and what the president knew an when he knew it. I think mark is exactly right. Its receded from our discussioning here and discussions on the capitol hill. But what we do know is that there are four separate investigations on the hill into russia. And then, theres the fbi investigation, as well. Im sure that the white house will come out and, you know, allies of this white house will say that, you know, yates is part of the deep state. Shes an obama holdover. She was out to get trump and out to sink his administration. She resign order got fired later on. But the problem is, their narrative and spin only goes so far because these are investigations are still ongoing. Even as they try to say the white house, essentially says, theres no there there. Russia, it is a prevailing issue, not just in washington but around the country. Everyone is talking about it. Theres concern all over the world about it, how russia influences our election. And if theres collusion. And speaking of the election, i want to talk about Hillary Clinton. Her candid interview today, she is talking about what went wrong. And i wonder if you agree. Here it is. I was on the way to winning, until the combination of jim comeys letter and russian wikileaks raised doubts in the mind of people that were inclined to vote for me, and got scared off. Nate silver, doesnt work for me. Hes an independent analyst, but one considered to be reliable. Has concluded, if the election had been on october 27th, i would be your president. But it wasnt. It was on october 28th. There was funny business going on around that. And ask yourself this. Within an hour or two of the hollywood access tape being made public, the russian theft of John Podestas emails hit wikileaks. The reasons i think we lost were the intervening events in the last ten days. She is blaming herself, too. She said she had plenty of problems, herself. Can she lay this on the feet of the fbi and blame it on comey and russia . These tone it and done it time and time again. And any public revelations about what she thinks went wrong and her aides are saying the same thing. They think comeys action in this election, coming out and saying there was an investigation going on, a investigation going on into Hillary Clintons emails, played a role. And his inaction, not to say there was an investigation going on into Trump Associates and whether or not there was any collusion there. Again, this is going to come up tomorrow. Democrats are going to hammer comey and find out if there is a precedent here. But kept with precedent when it came with donald trump. I want to switch gears and talk about something that was the biggest story of the day. I wonder what the kimmel effect will be of what is happening in washington now. Theyre lobbying lawmakers for a third time to sign on to repeal and replace obamacare, panel. Jimmy kimmel jumped into the conversation. He opened up about this newborn sons surgery. And he made this emotional plea. Before 2014, if you were born with Heart Disease, like my son was, there was a good chance you would never get Health Insurance because you had a preexisting condition. Yu were born with a preexisting condition. If your parents didnt have medical insurance, you wouldnt live long enough to get denied. If your baby is going to die and doesnt have to, it shouldnt matter how much money you make. Thats something that whether youre a republican or a democrat or something else, we all agree on that, right . So, mark, this affects every person who is watching, right . Every american, right . Health care. Many, many people, have to deal with what hes dealing with, for themselves and for their children. Could this be something . Is this the most effective thing so far you think in health care . Its relatable, if youre a republican or a democrat. What was interesting about what jimmy kimmel did there. He wasnt critical of republicans. He wasnt critical of democrats, he was critical of both of them the critical of the system and critical of dysfunction. And he spoke to an audience that isnt always clued in to the news, such as you and i are, or nia or jim or anybody, quite frankly. Who is tied into it. You have a cross of pop culture and politics, coming together and talking about an issue as to what you said, is very, very important. Do i think this is going to move the needle . Not necessarily. But i do think that it may have awoken some folks who havent followed this Health Care Debate as intensely as some of us have. This is from new york magazine, they put it this way. Jimmy kimmel might have struck a final blow against a Gop Health Care plan. What do you think . Maybe. This is close to a final blow already, before jimmy kimmel even talked. I think we sometimes overestimate the reach of people like jimmy kimmel. We live in a very partisan and divided country. And people have made up their minds in terms of what they think the role government should have in terms of health ware. Were past the era of Johnny Carson, when everyone tuned in to Johnny Carson at night. This Health Care Bill is so full of problems already, and lots of moderate gopers on the house side. 22 have said no. If they get to 223, its over. Its the age of the internet. Many more people saw that on the internet. They will see it played out on cable news. More people than would have watched Johnny Carson. If i could add a thought there. I know that jimmy kimmel, he took a lot of grief today from some conservative columnists, et cetera, calling him an elite us, saying dont get involved in the politics here t. I got three kids. Ive been in the hospital with three of them. You cant fake emotion about your kids. Right . So, as i watched that last night, as a dad, regardless of your position on the issue, it wasnt a legislative issue. I listened to him and said, that makes me feel connected to this issue. And i just i thought it was, as a fellow father, watching him speak there, it struck me as a very sincere emotion. Thats human. And we wish the best for the kimmels and for his son. And for everyone. Thank you, all. When we come back, President Trumps phone call with Vladimir Putin today. Were going to tell you what they talked about, next. So there are no artificial colors, no artificial flavors, no artificial preservatives in any of the food we sell. We believe in real food. Whole foods market. When this bell rings. It starts a chain reaction. Thats heard throughout the connected business world. At t Network Security helps protect business, from the largest Financial Markets to the smallest transactions, by sensing cyberattacks in near real time and automatically deploying countermeasures. Keeping the world of business connected and protected. Thats the power of and. President trump speaking today by phone, with russian president Vladimir Putin. I want to talk to russell. And julia a staff writer for the atlantic. Thank you for coming on. Matthew, you first. For the First Time Since taking office, President Trump spoke with the russian president Vladimir Putin on the phone this afternoon. We know they talked about a range of topics, syria, north korea. What details have you learned about this conversation . Details are thin on this, dan. The statement from the white house and the statement from the kremlin, broadly speaking, similar. They talked about counterterrorism in the context of syria, which is about revo e revolvirevolve sofling sear syria crisis. And the discremecy comes in the kremlin statement. And the two leaders talked about them continuing to talk on the phone. And meeting facetoface, perhaps, in july. The white house statement doesnt mention that. And this, i think is a reflection of the desire on the part of the russians to get the dignifying moment. This is valuable for Vladimir Putin. Of meeting with the president of the United States. I was in maoscow last week. I heard it from russians. They want to have that meeting. Contact restored from the topdown. And the urgency of that is less strongly felt on the american side. You read, putins disappointing phone call with trump. What exactly was disappointing about this conversation between the two leaders for you . As math you sathew said, i w in moscow last week. Funny we didnt see each other. All of the talks in official moscow is how quickly can we get trump and putin to meet . If they meet, hopefully the same thing will happen that happened with xi. And trump will feel a connection and will flip 180 degrees his previous policy stance. He will decide he doesnt want to label china a currency manipulator anymore. And maybe he will decide once again to unilaterally lift sanctions and will untangle himself from the kind of internal political mess in the u. S. , where russia hawks on the left and the right, are holding him down. But he didnt really get that in this phone call, as matthew pointed out. It was not in the white house readout of the phone call they agreed to meet. And if you look at the kremlin readout of the phone call, they talked about maybe meeting on the sidelines of the g20 summit in germany. And everything i was hearing from moscow was, we got to get this meeting in before july. They have to meet oneonone. Have that real chemical connection. And thats not going to happen. He has to meet with him on the sidelines of this big conference, just like everybody else. His short Attention Span is going to be pulled in all different directions. Its unclear how much impact a oneonone meeting in that context with putin will have. It makes you wonder where this relationship is now with putin and President Trump and russia and the United States. Were so far 103 days into this administration into trumps presidency. How do russians on the ground feel about him . Are they as excited as they were in january about this partnership . Ill ask you that. The sense i got from russians was complacent. Theyre at peace with the notion that, yep, the relationship is hostile. Its at a low point. But theres political benefits to that. If youre Vladimir Putin, youre running for e election in march of 2018. Its not going to be a free and fair election. Hes got to produce turnout. And one way of doing that is the narative that americans are out to get us. If he can have his cake and eat it to, he can have meetings at a high level, with merkel, trump, breaking the isolation that was imposed on him by the Previous Administration and its allies internationally. But he can continue this caretive that the west is out to get us. Were the ones that are supporting the stability in syria. The west is trying to do regime change again. Then hshgs e can sus sftain tha through the election. And then, deal with the problems that we have to work on together. And syria is a part of that. Its good were talking about syria. Are russians still excited about the prospect of this relationship between the United States and russia or putin and trump . I think matthew is right in his characterization of russians thinking on this. What i will add to that is that, russians are trying to be uncti understanding of trump. They think that trump its a similar way they see their own government. Putin is a good leader. He doesnt want the corruption. But hes been trapped and surrounded on all sides by the e fill ed evil advisers. And trump wants to have a Good Relationship with russia. He respects and admires their president. But hes entangled as one colleague of the Russian Foreign minister told me, hes like gulliver tied down. By his own internal administration. By all of the internal factors that have nothing to do with russia. Theyre just waiting. When hes good and ready, hes going to come to them. Theyre going to have a great and beautiful relationship. First, he has to get out of his own political mess in the states. That is what it comes down to. Trying to be understanding. Trying to have a little bit of hope left that this relationship can be salvaged and brought up out of the depths of which ipt is now. The short time we have left, i want to ask you about Vladimir Putins main opponent. Accusing the kremlin of
