Not ireland. Which are not countries. In terms of passengers affected. U. S. Citizens will still be able to return to the United States. From the area. As will green card holders and spouses of them etc. Theres a complicated list. Thereafter it gets difficult for foreigners for nonu. S. Citizens or green card holders to fly from the rest of europe if youd like to the United States. Thats why we have seen over the last 12 hours or so many u. S. Airlines dramatically cutting flights from the rest of europe. United have been cutting flights. Delta, american. All of them. Theres not going to be the demand. Those flights over the next few days that are available are just jam packed. And one final thought, flying from london to the United States next week or there after the price has rocketed. Because this is the best way back to the states. Except of course if you have been in the rest of europe. If youre a british citizen or if youre living in france or germany and fly to london, can you fly to the United States . And get in . No. Well, no. You cant. You cannot use london as a back door because the regulation says if you have been in the countries. So somebody who thinks a nifty weez ill get the from paris to london and hop on a plane to the states will be met at the other side. First of all they will be screened here. Have you been. We dont know exactly what information sharing there is. You will risk making an error, making a telling a false statement to immigration and that has serious consequences. One final point, from the rest of europe, those aircraft will be going to special designated airports that have been handling for example china. All the usual suspects. Chicago, dallas, l. A. , san francisco. There wont be the same capacity across the atlantaic. The aviation and Airline Organization says the 200,000 flights between the u. S. Every year. 46 billion worth. 26 billion worth of business. That is now very seriously in trouble. You may have said this, i want to be clear. U. S. Citizens who are currently in the europe who are flying back to the states are allowed to come back. What is the process like . Will they be a mandatory quarantine, what happens . That is unclear. Very unclear. So the nonu. S. Dont even get on the plane. They are barred. The u. S. Will go to the special airports and will follow the same procedures as was introduced by china, italy and others. It is unclear at least from our understanding of the rules at the moment exactly whether they are required to go immediately into selfisolation. Or some other form of isolation. Or whether its a hodgepodge have you got symptoms. U. S. Green card holders and spouses and the like. As for everybody else its a no go from europe. And if you fly, its a special its a mess. Theres no getting over it. Were talking about millions of people that would normally make this trip. Talking about the two continents cut off to some extent by sheer confusion. And european governments are seething. Blisteringly seething. First of all the situation isnt merited and secondly werent consulted. Blind sided. The flights that are continuing to the United States are going to be jam packed. Anybody who may the last thing you want is be squeezed in coach. Next to three other people at a time like this. Theres no question that if you look it comes in tonight. You have 12 hours, 24 hours the planes start flying here in its 3 00 in the morning here. The planes fly in about three hours. Same in europe. They will be packed as of midnight on friday. The curtain comes down. The number of flights will be cut. And if you really want to see the economic damage, norway a low cost carrier. Is slashing 40 of the routes. And says it will lay off or could lay off up to 50 of the staff. So the Airline Industry is on its knees as a result of this. Wow. Im trying to figure out what a anifty little weez is. Thats for next time. South korea will see massive testing and what could be a measure of success in flattening the curve. 1,700 cases, 13 deaths two weeks ago. A week ago it rose to 5,000. 35 deaths. This week nearly 7,900 cases, 66 people died. Joining us from seoul. South korea has been dealing with one of the largest out breaks so far, what measures are in place right now . What is daily life like for people . Testing really has been key here in south korea. Since this started theres been almost a quarter of a Million People in this can you want that have been tested. Thats far more than most other countries around the world. Over the last week the numb of new cases every day has been decreasing. They have new cases but it does appear at least at this point to be a slow down. I spoke to the Health Minister earlier this week. He was hoping we have seen the peek. I asked him south korea has been dealing with this for months now. What was the advice to give tout u. S. To europe and the countries now starting to have to grapple with this. He said testing. Early detection is vital. When it comes to stem the spread of the virus and try and calm down regional out breaks and clusters. Also its important to try and allocate medical resources correctly. Not Everybody Needs hospitalization. South korea only 10 of those who tested positive actually stayed in the hospital. He said that was key. He kept coming back to Early Detection and testing. South korea has been held up as a model as far as testing. What have been some of the other challenges to the response . One of the issues that south korea has is the clusters that have come one that seemingly from nowhere in the southeast of the country. There was a Massive Cluster linked to one particular religious group. Close to 60 of the cases at one point were linked to ta group. Officials questioned that group and said they hampered the effort and the fact they have been secretive and werent giving a list of members openly and quickly. Thats been one of the main issues. We had a cluster in the past few days in seoul. Where theres been 100 people in a call center that tested positive. What officials have done is shut down the building. Quarantined everyone and testing everyone within the building. To stem that. What is does show is no matter how efficient the Health System in the country and how quick the government is to react, it is key that citizens are honest and cooperating. Otherwise all the best entepgss of a Health System can be under mined. As they were here. Thank you very much. Some of the questions on facebook. Since we dont have enough testing how do we know how many people have the virus in america the answer is we dont. We dont. Projections it could be 20 times higher. We dont know. Joining us now the World Health Organization. Globally speaking where do things stand in your view on containing this virus. It seems like numbers out of china seem to have stabilized. Is that do you believe thats true . What you seeing globally . Thanks for having me. What were seeing globally is in general a decrease in cases across asia. Thats led by a decrease in china as you have been seen. We believe that is real is because there is a lot of testing thats happening in china. Not only among cases in contact but also looking in their respiratory disease surveillance system. So its declining in wuhan. In the epicenter of the out break. And yesterday there were 26 cases reported in china over all. Were also seeing a decrease in korea. As you just heard. And we have seen decreases in singapore. The worrying trend are increases in europe. We are seeing large increases in a number of countries across europe. And that is a worry. As you know the more you test the more youll find. Its very important that testing continues and all cases in contacts are tested. Its a new world for a will the of people understanding how best to slow the spread of the virus. All countries must strike the balance between protecting health and minimizing social disruption and respecting human rights. What work still needs to be done to really strike that blanls . Balance. Thanks for that question. We feel strongly that what has been demonstrated in a number of countries to reduce transmission can be done elsewhere. What that means is ensuring that aggressive and comprehensive approach by all people, by governments that really attempt to find all cases, find all contacts. Care for them. Making sure they get the right standard of care in hospital and as you know not everybody will require hospitalization. Some people will develop severe disease. Its important to get the right care. Make sure contacts are isolated, are in quarantine. So we remove them from other people. So they dont pass it on. If you do that you have to make sure theyre cared for as well. And have the right information. They have food and have medical care. They can still reach loved ones. There is a balance between separating people and making sure with dont pass the virus between people. But make them feel connected with loved ones. Its interesting you have been monitoring this longer than folks in the United States. Its been on the World Health Organization radar. Since china. You know best case practices and what works to contain this, what is the u. S. Not doing that we should be doing whether its communities leaders or whatever the case maybe, we heard from the correspondent in china who is saying folks in wuhan seeing the u. S. Americans in new york going to gyms and cant believe that people are still doing that. What should the u. S. Be doing that were not . Or need to ramp up. What i can tell you is what we know works. Finding cases and contacts. Social distancing works. Keep people separated. If youre sick and feeling unwell, stay home. Thats really key. We know that restricting your own movement. If you can work from home, work from home. We have seen in several countries where they have shut down gyms and shut down social gatherings. That does work. Its important for everyone to know that it is going to be difficult for sometime. There are measures that need to be put in place. These are temporary. All of these measures in place may seem aggressive, over the top. We know if you can separate people, then you restrict the possibility of this virus from passing from one person to another. Activating your Emergency Response and your emergency mechanisms. Make sure governments not only from the health side but working with the finance side. With the travel and tourism industry. Work with businesses. This is all societal approach. This is all government approach. And the last thing that we know works is mobilizing the public. Making sure that every Single Person knows what their responsibility is. Making sure every person knows that the signs and symptoms are fever, dry cough. Its not a runny nose. There are things people need to know. What is my individual risk. And protect myself and family. If you have that you have an entire population that can fight this virus. We got a clear description of what the trafl ban looks like now from europe to the United States. Is that going to work . Is that an effective strategy . I have heard about this yesterday. We know there are many countries that are putting in travel bans. What we know this virus is circulating. The virus is has been identified in all continents. And so having what we know will work is not necessarily stopping flights. Because the virus has already circulated. What we know works is testing. You have to be aggressive in finding your cases and contacts. So increase make sure youre Testing Capacity increased. Make sure the people that need to be tested are. Thats what works. The other thing thats going to work and help people and save lives are readying your hospitals. So if hospitals are not ready they will be quickly overwhelmed. And its important that hospitals have the right supplies. That healthcare workers are trained in Infection Prevention and control. Trained in what they can do to help patients who come in. Making sure you have enough of a work force so people arent working too long hours and healthcare workers themselves get a break. These are the types of things that governments, countries should be doing. Ready your healthcare system. Get your supplies ready, increase testing, train healthcare workers. Questions from viewers all over the globe. This is video in sacramento, california. Research paper is recently published by a chinese researchers that indicated that there are two types of the coronavirus. A type l and type s. With the s type being the strain that is much less aggressive than the l type of coronavirus. I was wondering what are the implications of that. Doctor. Theres a large number over the world looking at viruss that are identified in Different Countries. Very early on we know that there are different groupings of the viruss. And that was just mentioned in the question. Theres no indication that there are differences in terms of this is a virus there are normal changes that happen in a virus over time. This virus is relatively stable. So far theres no differences in the groupings. As it relates to severity. We have a question from edward in england. How many people worldwide have actually recovered from the coronavirus . Thats a very good question. I dont know the exact answer on that. I know in china that its more than 60,000 people have recovered. Its probably higher than that. That number was from a few days ago. Thats a good point. Everyone that is infected with the virus not everyone infected will have a severe disease. We understand from the data is about 80 of the people from china over all will have a mild form of the disease. Theyll feel unwell. For sometime. For a week or two. About 20 of people that get infected will require some advance care in hospital. Some respiratory support. And a small portion of people will die. So far were trying to keep track of recoveries globally. Its an important number. We need to follow people through the course of the disease. And follow them after they recover to make sure they are doing well. At least 60,000 people have recovered. One of the things is worth drilling down on. 80 we hear will have mild disease. When i read the studies out of china. I want to be clear on what mild disease means. When i read the studies people within the 80 could have pneumonia and lung scarring. Significant things. Yes. Youre right. Its not just a few days at home feeling unwell. 40 of people will have a relatively mild disease and we mean that in the sense they will feel unwell. A fever and respiratory systems and aches and pains. Maybe headache. And there are another 40 that will develop pneumonia. Or a mild form. And that doesnt sound. Reporter very mild. But dont require respiratory support. A video question from facebook. By carol. I have cancer. I wonder if theres anything specifically that Cancer Patients should be watching for and if we should check with our doctors earlier with symptoms to look for. I dont know if you can see. Shes i dont know what her age is. I would say elderly. 60s. And she had cancer. We know that there are individuals who are more at risk for severe disease and death. And these are individuals who have under lying conditions such as cancer. Such as cardiovascular. Respiratory. Diabetes. Because of the conditions maybe more likely to develop a severe illness and die. So it is important that people that have the under lying conditions do talk to your doctor. Especially if they are older and above age 60, 70. Speak to your doctor. Talk to them about what your individual risk maybe. Make sure you take the right approach. In term of if you are developing symptoms. Call them early. Dont hesitate to call your doctor and get questions. One of the things to know is be informed. Make sure they know themselves what to lookout for. Looking out for fever, respiratory disease, call your doctor. If you have shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. Call your doctor right away. And call ahead before you go into see them. If you have shortness of breath its important to go in and see a doctor. Right a way. One of the things a will the of what we base knowledge of the coronavirus is data thats out of china. The large studies. Im curious, in the past obviously theres been situations where theres been concern concern about transparency. Back to the sars. 18 years ago. What is the World Health Organization evaluating the data. Is there cause for concern and lack of transparency . We are looking for evidence and data ob the coronavirus from every country that is dealing with this virus. We are working with all Member States to make sure the data that is captured by the country is shared with us. And not only shared with us but the global community. We were very hard on china in the beginning as with all countries because with a novel virus it means we dont know much about it. Anything we can learn about this virus needs to be shared not only among chinese citizens but to the rest of the world. So that we can build the best approach in terms of battling this virus. So theres a lot of information that has come out of there. Papers have come out of there. I spent two weeks in china with the mission, a who joint mission. We worked wd scientists to see what information was there and how it could be used. We published a report online. Which has been shared with the world. Were working with a number of other countries the data coming out of korea theres papers that have come out recently. Theres papers and reports coming out of the italy. We want to see all of these analysis be put forward so we can see are there differences happening in Different Countries in terms of the way the virus is behaving. We need evidence to be able to show that. We are an evidence based organization. Its important that all this evidence is shared so we have the best approach to tackle this virus. I saw on facebook. A question that came in from a woman who says is this like one and done. If you get infected and get over it can you get reinfected or like the flu in a season. Youre done for the season. So thats a good question. The answer is we dont know. Yet. What we are looking at in what scientists are hooking at is an immune response to individuals infected with the virus. We dont have a robust data on this yet. What could happen is that when someone gets infected they develop an i
