Needs a test gets a test. Were still a long way away from a vaccine. Governors a across the country are under pressure to open up and get states back in business. More than 30 states have started reopening businesses and easing stay at home orders. More to come this week. But as more and more reopen without even having met the president s vague guidelines, i want you to listen to what the president said moments ago about the projected death toll. Us i use d to i say 65,000. Now im saying 80,000 and it goes up rapidly. But its still going to be at the very lower end of the plane, if we did the shutdown. But thats after dr. Birx claimed today that the white house always projected 240,000 deaths from the coronavirus. Our projections have always been between 100,000 and 240,000 american lives lost. Thats with full mitigation and us learning from each other of how to social distance. So thats what you call a contradiction. This isnt the first time the president con a tra dikted his own experts. Its looking like its heading to 50,000 or more deaths. Not cases, 50,000 deaths. So were talking about maybe 60,000 or so. Thats a lot of people. Thats 100,000 was the minimum we thought we could get to. Well be lower that than number. We would have had millions of deaths instead of well be at about a 60,000 mark, which is 40,000 less than the lowest number thought of. Now with all of the death that were seeing at 50 or 60,000 people heading toward, right now its at 40,000, probably over 50,000, we have lost a lot of people, but if you look at what original projections were, 2. 2 million, were probably heading to 60,000. And lets not forget this stunning statement from the president s own soninlaw and Senior AdviserJared Kushner calling the response a Great Success story. Were on the other side of the medical aspect of this. And i think we have achieved all the different milestones needed. So the federal government rose to the challenge and this is a Great Success story. Thsz no success story. Not while deaths are are still climbing. The president tonight is trying to pivot to reopening the economy. I think were going to have an incredible following year. Were going to go into a transition in the Third Quarter and see things happening that it are really good. I have a good feel for this stuff. I have done it for a long time. So i said it before. Everybodiments the kmu to come back. People are hurting. Millions of jobs lost. Millions of people not sure where to get the money to pay the rent and put food on the table. But the president wants to be able to showcase an economic recovery. Its the ace in the hole with election day just six months away. He cant seem to muster the kind of compassion that we need from our president. With more and more americans getting sick and more and more americans dying. He is longing to get back to crowded campaign rattllies. Hopefully our country will soon mend. We all missing our wonderful rallies, and many other things. No, were not. Hes bragging about his golf courses. Then theres this. One of the most transparent and ludicrous us attempts at distraction we have seen from a president who has a million of them retweeting and utterly absurd claim by a conspiracy theorist that the former president barack obama was behind the russia hoax. This one is really a new low from a president who goes low all the time. It is obviously kmeetly untrue. Its a disturbed fantasy. Just as obviously he doesnt really expect you to believe it. He just wants to turn the page to get you to think about something, anything, other than one of the worst crises in the nations history. Look in the mirror, mr. President. Its you. And this is nothing but a shameless attempt to distract from your own administrations mishandling of a crisis thats cost over 67,000 american lives. By the way, you were warned a about a pandemic like this by the obama administration. A at a time we wh we need leadership, when we need compassion, this is the crap youre pedaling. Conspiracy theories . Like i said, its shameful. But thank goodness there is a president , a real president showing compassion for his fellow americans. It is not President Trump. It is former president george w. Bush with a message full of images of and concern for all americans. Lets remember the suffering we experience as a nation does not fall evenly. In the days to come, it will be especially important to care in practical ways for the elderly, the ill and the unemployed. Finally, let us remember how small our differences are in the face of this shared threat. In the final analysis, we are not partisan combatants. We are human beings, equally vulnerable and equally wonderful in the sight of god. We rise or fall together. And we are determined to rise. How does President Trump respond . Predictically he makes it all about him, about his wound ed pride, his constant airing of grievances, tweeting that former president bush didnt defend him on impeachment. The president s um peachment trial ended in his acquittal on february 5th. The next day the First American died of the coronavirus. More than 6,000 americans have dued since then. How about thinking about them for a change instead of nurse ing your grudges . How about showing some compassion. Former president bush did. Pz so did barack obama. Hi, everybody. Let me start by say iing the obvious. These arent normal times. As we all manage our way through a pandemic unlike anything we have seen in a century, michelle and i hope you and your families are safe and well. If you have lost somebody to this virus, or if someone in your life is sick, or if youre one of the millions suffering economic hardship, please know that youre in our prayers. Please know youre not alone. Because now is the time for all of us to help where we can and to be there for each other as neighbors, as coworkers and as fellow citizens. In fact, over the past weeks, we have seen plenty of examples of the kind of courage, kindness and selflessness that were going to need to get through one of the most difficult times in our history. Boy, oh, boy, thats leadership. Thats compassion. Its too bad that President Trump cant show either. By the way, what is it about president obama that really gets under your skin . Is it because hes smarter than you . Better educated . Made it on his own, didnt need dad daddys help, life is more accomplished, better looking, what is it . What is it about him . That hes a black man thats accomplished, became president. That he punked you on the birth certificate thing. What is it about him . Just wondering. Lets bring in White House CorrespondentJeremy Diamond and the codirector of the cardiac program at George Washington university hospital. Good evening to oath both of you. Jeremy, im going to start with you. I want to get your reaction to something we heard from the president tonight. Listen to this. I really believe you can go to parks, you can go to beaches, you keep the spread, you stay away a certain amount. And us really think the public has been incredible. Thats one of the the reasons were successful. If you call losing 80 or 0,000 people successful, but its one of the reasons that were not at that high end of the plain opposed to the low. That number has changed. Its going up. I used to say 65,000. Now im saying 80 or 0. It goes up rapidly. So the president has had to acknowledge the relate that the death count keeps going up at the same time hes calling for states to open. So what gives here . Well, us i think this is just the latest instance of mixed messaging, which has been the response from the very beginning. We have seen the president trien opt the one hand to offer hope. Sometimes hope that turns out to be false hope, while at the same time having his government put in place the social distancing guidelines, trying to encourage people to slow the spread of the virus and to flatten that curve. I presume the president will have to unfortunately update his estimates of the death toll once again and thats because we heard dr. Birx this morning saying that the white house, as far as the medical experts are concerned, they havent altered their projection at all from what we originally heard which is 100,000 to 240,000 deaths in the United States due to coronavirus by theened of this pandemic. We have seen the president , though, try to gloss over that, try to suggest that things are better than indeed they are. What the president s a advisers and allies will tell me is that this is a president trying to provide hope, trying to encourage americans to continue what they are doing and show its effective. But at the same time, were seeing many of the president s supporters are listening to his message that were on the other end of this. Things are getting better. They are then coming out and protesting and urging some of the democrat cannic governmeic begin reopening states even though medical experts say its not time yet. I want to bring you in here. The president seems to be saying that its safe to go to the parks and beaches. Does that make any sense to you . No, and i think in some ways it really betrays the hundreds of thousands of people in the the United States who work in hospitals to try to save lives. I want i went to the hospital yesterday morning to do an emergency procedure. All my teammates are Wearing Masks and all the nurses in the icu were Wearing Masks. And were wearing them to protect each other. When i walked on to the street, the streets were filled with people yesterday. And i really felt betrayed. I felt that many of these people were not Wearing Masks. So in this building, people are really struggling at personal peril to save lives, yet the message that the population, that the public is getting is much different. Its a mixed message. Its the president saying he wants to see full restaurant and sporting arenas filled with people and people on beaches and parks and im telling you that thats contributing to the loosening of social distancing and its going to cost lives. There are over 2,000 deaths per day in the United States. Were going to blow past the latest estimate by august 1st. Were going to blow by that on tuesday. So this is coming from the top. Its incredibly destructive. Everyone in medicine knows this. I noticed that being out and about today coming into work, many people not Wearing Masks. There were more people out in new york city today. I saw many people not Wearing Masks. I said what was this all about if people are going to be out and about and the possibility to continue to spread this again. Can we talk about the president continuing to cheerlead this drug despite the fda put out a warning about it. Theres more to be tested about this. Who knows whats going to happen when there are randomized tests, but he keeps getting calls. What does the evidence show about this treatment so far . We have no evidence that it really makes any positive impact in a covid19 patient. And to the the contrary, we have evidence that in some circumstances, it can create dangerous heart abnormalities. Theres no data to support it. The one drug that does have data, these anecdotes that the president keeps touting are just that. Anecdotes. The plural of anecdote is not data. Its just anecdote. They are meaningless. You have heard nothing from doctors and hospitals saying they are using this with great result . No. Okay. Jeremy, tonight the president continues to try to deflect and distract from the coronavirus story and pointing fingers at others . He certainly is. And this is something we have seen the president do repeatedly. Hes refused to accept any responsibility for any of the number of failings of the administrations response to the Coronavirus Crisis from january b into february. That month of february where we saw little action from the administration. Instead what we have seen from the president are repeated attempts to try to deflect blame on to others. Sometimes theres merit to what the president is talking about, particularly when you lock the at china. There are certain things china did not do or disclose to the United States and to other countries that they should have, but you have to look at it in totality. In terms of what the president is trying to accomplish here. Its not just china because the president also pointing the finger at the World Health Organization and even some of those governors, we heard the president tonight during the town hall on another network criticizing the governor of michigan, governor inslee of washington. Because they are asking for more things from the federal government. They are asking for more supplies. So this is part in parcel the president s strategy here and aga again, to this notion of the mixed messaging he offers, the president is not focusing on telling americans what they need to do to slow the spread. He prefers instead to deflect blame and to really be the person championing his own success and own selfcongratulations because he feels like hes the only one that can get the message out of what he views as his own success. Even blaming his own Intelligence Community as well. Thank you very much for that. Thank you. Appreciate both of you. A brand new projection for deaths in this country. And this number is disturbingly higher tharn the model the white house has been using. Well talk to the scientists behind this new model, thats next. Ing still takes time. A model predicting that deaths could surpass 160,000 by august, thats significantly higher than in other models including one cited by the white house. Joining me is the creator of the model at covid19 projections. I appreciate you joining us. Thank you so much, sir. So your model shows deaths per day staying near 1,000 all the way through july. Youre projecting more than 163,000 deaths by august 4th. But the ihme model cited by the white house only projects 72,000 deaths by that point. Why is there such a big difference . First of all, thank you for having me on the show, don. Its an honor. And i think for our projections, we think the u. S. Will reach 70,000 deaths on tuesday, i think as someone mentioned earlier. 80,000 by around this time next yeweek. 100,000 deaths most likely by the end of may. And we currentliest mate about a 50 50 chance of the u. S. Surpassing 150 deat,000 deaths august with 300,000. I want to stress the importance of using a range or probability rather than exact number because there are a lot of uncertain bties that can affect the course of the epidemic between now and august. So if your model accounts for states reopening and were seeing more and more states starting to do that, does that suggest that states reopening now will have a devastating effect on the death rate . I think its right now a little early to tell. I think well definitely have more clarity as more data comes in in the next coming weeks. And for now, to the best of my knowledge, were the only model that accounts for state by state reopenings. So if you visit our website, you can see when each state plans object reopening and how that will affect infections and deaths in the days and weeks following that. And we think that for many states that are reopening, there will be potentially an increase in the number of infections as a result of this reopening. You take that into effect. You predict that u. S. Deaths will likely surpass 100,000 by may 27th. Thats just over three weeks away. Is there time left to avoid that kind of number . That is hard for us to know right now. I think its important that states continue to impose guidelines in place to limit the number of social interactions. So continuing social distancing guidelines, that will help keep that number low. And us i think as of now, end of may is our best estimate for when the u. S. Will surpass 100,000 deaths. But again, a hot of things can happen over the next few weeks and the next few months. That can change our projections. So we try to make new projections daily to account for new data that are coming in. Y
