Previous segment mr. Floyds behavior and Police Tactics and training and techniques and so on and so forth. I can tell you that there is a video of him being taken out of a car. He is escorted to a building and appears to be compliant. But what happened after he was handcuffed behind his back, face down on the concrete and knee into the neck. These are the issues that prosecutors have to evaluate the evidence to determine what if any charges should be brought forth. The case is being investigated and taken seriously. The governor to the Lieutenant Governor to myself have seen and expressed humane and human reactions to it but it will be a jury or a fact finder that will decide, you know, what the fate of the officers ultimately is going to be. I want to make sure that the investigation is considered fair so that nobody can say that the investigation you was not absolutely fair and based on the law and the consequences are according to justice and law. Floyd died on monday night. The officers involved were fired the very next day, and that is almost unheard of in situations like this. What does it say to but the investigations . What it says to me is that the city of minneapolis is taking this very seriously. That the police chief understands that in order to have a Police Department that reflects justice, law, fairness and the proper relationship to their citizens that people that dont up hold those values should not maintain their status on the Police Department. I spoke to the family last night. I want you to listen. This is what the cousin told me. Let me get your reaction. Firing them is a good start. But we want to see justice for our our family. What it was is murder. Almost the whole world has witnessed that. What is your reaction to that, sir . My reaction is that i can empathize with where she is and that these officers demonstrated a level of conduct that was expected of them and why they cant be members of the Police Department anymore. I would say that we have to go through the normal course. Any defense attorney will look for any t not crossed or i not dotted to say that the officers did not get treated fairly and that is why it is important for the investigation to go forward and it is right to be fast but also thorough and that they be charged if they will be charged. I am reluctant to say that they will be charged. We will let the facts guide us in that regard. Understood. You dont want to do anything to jeopardize the case. I understand that as the chief Law Enforcement officer. Let me ask you this, it is your job to up hold the law and nobody is condoning the protests. I can understand the anger but i do not understand in some way the burning of buildings. We dont know how the fire started. I understand the anger. What do you say to the protesters that are out there or if the fire was started by one of the protesters because of the situation there. What do you say to those folks . I say to them that the overwhelming number of people are demonstrating their First Amendment rights and their outrage for a fair resolution in the case. The few team that decide to turn it into a wrong direction are not helping because of the floyd family. They dont want to see somebody turn the thing into something it shouldnt be which is an issue of some sort of violation of law. What they want to keep the focus on is what happened to their level in george floyd. Be safe. Do the right thing. Make sure that mr. Floyd remains the center of this and that we do not get distracted by somebodys momentary outrage. It would not up hold his dignity to do Something Like that. Well said sir. I appreciate your time. Thank you. Be safe. Thank you. We will continue on here. We will continue to follow that. This is cnn tonight. I am don lemon just past the top of the hour here. The United States reached a terrible milestone in the coronavirus pandemic. It now has killed more than 100,000 americans, almost twice the number lost during the entire vietnam war. The first known u. S. Death from the disease ewas on february 6t, less than four months ago. Those that died are mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, husbands, wives, grandparents. President trump silent tonight. The number of case of coronavirus continues to climb. Nearly 1. 7 million confirmed cases here in the United States. As we wait on the bodycam video coming in from minneapolis, minnesota. I want to bring in the doctor to talk about this, the director at George Washington University Hospital and the former Vice President dick cheneys card l cardiologist as well. As we look back and get more information, now than four months later. Over 100,000 deaths. The president of the United States said nothing about 100,000 american lives loss and no doubt that it could have been avoided. Right. There were two unforgivable errors made early on in this epidemic. The first i was the incredibly slow march to testing. The first positive test was january 20th. At a time that south korea was doing many times that. The second really unforgivable error made in the early days and continuing up until now is our horribly mixed messages. Counter messages about wearing masks. On february 29th the Surgeon General of the United States scolded the American Public about buying masks. Told them not to. We were facing a respiratory pathogen. We have known for a century that masks prevent the spread of disease. Photographs from the 1918 flu pandemic everyone in the photograph is wearing a mask. During that time it travelled the highways and now 100,000 are dead. The greatest failing in the history of the country. All avoidable. Hong kong has the same population has new york city and they got their first infections around the same time that new york did. Hong kong had four deaths. New york had 20,000. Take a look at the u. S. Death toll compared to others since you mentioned that. We have about 30 deaths per 100,000 people. Germany has seen about ten deaths. Japan. South korea has lost fewer people per capita. You were just talking about this. Hong kong. How do you explain this, doctor . We let the virus run raumpan. Okay. The ban to china travel. It wasnt a complete ban. It was a restriction. What about the ban . What about that and social distancing and shutting the economy down and so on and so forth. Yeah. You know, closing some of the travel from china because it you was reported about 40,000 people came from china after the travel ban is like closing the screen door on the front of the house and leaving the backdoor wide open. The virus came to the east coast from europe and we had an incomplete travel ban. The ban from china was a good thing to do but only 1 of 10 things to do and the simple things, you know, contact tracing, aggressive testing, wearing masks, none of this was done. We wasted time hyping completely worthless therapies like hydroxchloroquine. We chased down blind alleys all the while the virus was spreading around the country. We didnt protect our elderly, parents, grandparents and nursing homes. A third of the deaths in the hunt are in nursing homes, the most vulnerable people. We have completely failed them. So listen. We have been told repeatedly to stay six feet away from people and now experts are saying that is not enough. This is troubling for many to hear. Tell us about the new findings. Yeah. Traditional respiratory preventions are designed to prevent the pathogens from a cough or sneeze but this virus is contagious and can be transmitted through breathing and talking. It is always transmitted by aerosol, small particles that can travel up to 20 feet. A notion where if you stand six feet away, you know, that comes from century old data back from the original flu pandemic and really not contemporary data. The way that you stop the spread of the virus is for everyone to wear a mask. Everyone to wear a mask. 99 of people in places like korea wear a mask. Doctor, thank you for your time. See you soon. Sure. I want to bring in daniel dale, hello to you. Over 100,000 coronavirus deaths in the nation. This virus was never under control. It was never under control. Don, he said it was under control in january when that seemed questionable at best and in february when it seemed dubious and under control in midmarch when that was clearly false. Listen to some of the things he said. We have it under control. It is going to be just fine. We think we have it very well under control. We have very little problems in this country. Those people are all recuperating successful. By april when it gets warmer it miraculously goes away. The coronavirus is very well under control in our country. We are going substantially down, not up. You have 15 people and the 15 people will be close to 0. Pretty good job. Great job with it. It will go away if you stay calm. He finally acknowledged on march 20th that it was out of control but by then he deceived the country. Yeah. Trump is defending his handling of the crisis claiming if he had not done a good job the death toll would be 2 million by now. It is not my job as a fact checker to say if he did a good or bad job. But south korea has the first things first confirmed case the same day, 300 deaths not the 100,000. They were slow to take essential steps that could slow the spread in the United States. That figure was the worst Case Scenario where if the United States did not do any mitigation. The mitigation that was undertaken was undertaken by governors, local leaders and individual citizens and not the president himself. Make sure you watch Anderson Cooper and sanjay gupta host a town hall with a science writer. Facts and fears excuse me live tomorrow night. More new developments on the coronavirus death toll. I want to go down to minneapolis where outrage is spreading over the death of george floyd and protesters are out on the streets. These clashes are continuing. Are they escalating between police and protesters over this death . Two things are happening. One, there are firefighters that are out trying to put out a fire at the autozone which has taken hold of the entire building now across the street from the third precinct minneapolis Police Department. Then there is a huge target parking lot that sells all sorts of things that you would want to get at the grocery store. I am now walking towards the target looking behind me is a building of smoke and i dont know if you can hear that beeping noise but that is the alarm at target. It looks like a smokey destruction. There is a large amount of smoke. People have taken as many things out. We are watching people filling their vehicle from a target. Dozens of people going inside and taking out, you know, groceries, carts full of groceries. Two separate things going on at the same time where people are out protesting. The police are barricaded in their precinct and then have you folks deciding that they are going to go into the target and loot the place. We are watching it happen right now. Sara, i want you to stand by. We are going to continue on with sara here. Yeah. Tell us what you are hearing and seeing. So, fireworks are being fired off in the parking lot here in minneapolis. If you are standing in the middle of the huge parking lot, there are hundreds of people. It is like the fourth of july out here. They are almost on par with professional fireworks. They were being shot towards the Police Department and over some of the buildings, including the autozone. There is wonder if the fire was started by that or another way. You are hearing loud noises. First flashbangs from police. It is quite a scene here. We are seeing loads of cars. A parking lot and a line of people going to the front of the store, to the target and loading as many things as they can in their cars. Earlier today there were folks here that had begged people. Africanamerican leaders that have been in the community for a long time saying that you know we know you are angry. We are angry watching what has happened to this 46yearold father. They were so emotional about it. But they begged people not to do it and not to turn it into Something Else and to protest to do things to show their anger and do things in a constructive way. There was resistance to that and young people saying you can fix broken windows and cars and a broken Police Department. You cant bring back a life. There was this competing thought process out here where on the one hand they are like dont do it. Dont turn it. Look at them out there doing this. It has nothing to do with the pain of what happened to this black man in america and all of the protesting and the begging for it to be changed had it turn ones it head when people were looting in the stores and feel like they want to break it down because they are so, so angry about what has happened now and what has happened in the past and Everyone Needs to keep that in mind. In the past there are several incidents in the area that have people already feeling a certain kind of way towards police, one woman telling us she tells her children not to trust the police. On the other hand you have a Swift Movement from the Police Department in this case firing four officers within 48 hours of what happened. The reaction right now is big and it is intense and it is still intense. You have two different groups. Some are in the stores taking out beer and wine from the spirit store and you have others standing in the face of police with their hands up. I want you to stand by. We are going to leave these pictures up. I want to say as i said earlier. I can understand the anger. People are feeling like they are occupied. I think that it is important to show those pictures. I understand the anger but i cant understand the action. Nobody wants further lives lost here. Protesting is one thing. Looting and pillaging is another thing. I understand you are angry and that many feel like they are occupied in their own communities but looting, burning, putting others in harms way and maybe even death, that is not the way to go. I do not understand those actions. I understand the anger but not the actions. As we look at it. Sara is gathering more information and more reporting. This is what is happening in the country. Over 100,000 people have died from the coronavirus and now we have this situation happening in minneapolis where four Police Officers have been fired now after the death of george floyd, and today the mayor of minneapolis is calling for charges against the officers that pinned floyd. Watch this. It is on us as leaders to see it for what it is and call it what it is. George floyd deserves justice. The officer that had his knee on the neck of george floyd should be charged. Tonight the owner say they are being targeted with death threats. Mike is there with his three s happening there and the pictures of what is going on. Terrible scene to watch. A staff member confronted dodgers flogeorge floyd when he tried to use a counterfeit 20 bill. After the staff identified that the bill was fake, floyd was out of the establishment and outside. My staff called the police during a practice protocol. The police arrived. Floyd was outside. That is when they approached him. I want to make sure that we get it correct. A Family Member witnessed a Police Officer kneeling on floyds neck tried to intervene. He pushed him over the curb as it shows on the video. Mike, the new video is out today showing floyd did not resist. We are waiting now for the body cam video. Didnt resist arrest as the police described. You said you were asked by police not to release your video publicly. Have you been able to look at the video . I did view it on tuesday after the death of floyd. And . And what i saw was devastating and heartbreaking and condolences go to families and friends. Did you see resistance . No. On the videotape that you have no resistance. Exactly what was repo extly what you see. You say that and the store. What do you want to say with people that are angry right now and lashing out. People that have known us for the 31 years we have been there for. A small percentage of people ar
