CNNW CNN Tonight With Don Lemon September 10, 2020

Olays new serum is so powerful, it renews skin better than 300, 500, even 600 serums. Pretty amazing. Olay. Face anything. This is cnn tonight, im don lemon. Following some breaking news for you. Damage control at the white house tonight after a new book by bob woodward reveals President Trump knew early on how deadly and dangerous the coronavirus was. Concealed the information. Down played the impact of the virus on americans. Woodward recorded 18 interviews with trump including this one on february 7th where the president called the virus deadly stuff. And so what was president xi saying yesterday . We were mostly talking about the virus. And i think he is going to have it in good shape but it is a tricky situation. It goes through air, bob. That is always tougher than the touch. The touch, you dont have to touch things. The air, you just breathe the air. That is how it is passed. That is a very tricky one. A very delicate one. It is also more deadly than even your strenuous flus. People dont realize, we lose 25,000 to 30,000 people a year here. Who would think that. Right. Pretty amazing. This is more deadly. This is 5 vs. Less than 1 . This is deadly stuff. Democratic nominee joe biden calling the president s reactions almost criminal. More from the interview with biden, a cnn exclusive coming up in the hour. We have a lot to get to tonight and lets discuss. Our white house correspondent, Caitlyn Collins joins us and the former Senior Advisor to president Obama David Axelrod is here. Jamie, i will start with you. The president had lifesaving information about this pandemic and lied about it. Meaning the 190,000 americans that died didnt have to. It is beyond belief. The woodward book paints a portrait of failure of leadership, betrayal of trust. How is it that on february 7th, donald trump knew that it was airborne and that today he is still mocking people who wear masks . It is unbelievable, you know. For those old enough to remember watergate and the famous question from then senator howard baker, what did the president know and when did he know it . It turns out donald trump knew this very early on and he could have saved thousands of lives. David axelrod, you know the president admitted in private the virus was deadly but in public he called it a democratic hoax. A his political interesting he was worried about what the economy would do if he had to take the measures to deal with this. You cant call it fake news when you are on tape. That is the big problem. Whoever committed him to 18 interviews with bob woodward ought to be given a oneway ticket out of the white house tomorrow. He is on tape. He said it. His explanation is that i dont want to panic people. That is a new policy on the part of the president. He is is busy trying to panic people all of the time about various things. About rioters and immigrants and others. The real answer is that he put his personal and political interest, a common story for donald trump. But on this one, this is a hit to the main engine because the virus is what is controlling the election right now and controlling the lives of the American People in many ways. Now his misbehavior is costing them in a big way. And i think that it brings all of us back to the forefront. It is a really serious problem for him. You know david brings up a good question, do we know who green lit this . Now his defense is that this is a political hit job. He sat down for 18 interviews on tape, all in his own words. Yeah. There is so much blame going around the white house right now that it is hard to fathom. People like the former press secretary blaming certain people. People are blaming stephanie grisham, hope hicks, lindsey gram, everybodys name that was around him and in any way involved in this is being blamed for letting the president sit down this extensively with bob woodward. Whoever allowed the president to sit down with woodward 18 times should be given a oneway ticket out of the white house. It was the president who made the decision based on what the sources are telling us. He was so scorned he didnt sit down with him last time he thought he could make himself look good if he sat down with woodward in this book to really make his case essentially. That is what aides see if he didnt talk to him the 18 times the interview and book would not be nearly as damaging as now it is proving to be. Jamie, i understand you are learning the president bragged about something he shouldnt have in his first interview with woodward. The president wasnt willing to share critical details about covid but in his very first interview with bob woodward he decided to tell him about a new secret Nuclear Weapons program. I think we have part of that interview. I have built a weapons system that nobody ever had in this country before. We have stuff you have not even seen or heard about. Stuff that putin and xi never heard about before. What we have is incredible. They know about it now and so does everybody else. Woodward went out and confirmed that such a system does exist. But the thing, just to go back to why he did these interviews, he did the interviews because he wanted to do these interviews. There is a critical fact here, two interviews were done in the oval office and one at the other 15 were phone calls, many late at night from the residence that were probably not recorded. The white house probably doesnt even know what else President Trump said to woodward on the tapes. Remember her emails, david. I know. I know. Just relative to that he may be the one getting the oneway ticket out of the white house. I think it is that big of mistake on this issue. This is the issue plaguing him right now and the issue he cannot escape and he made it immeasurably worse for himself by revealing what he knew and when he knew it. The president is his own Communications Director and own chief of staff. He may have made a politically fatal decision. David, i want your response to this as well from a june 19th interview with woodward, two weeks after trump had the protesters cleared from washingtons Lafayette Square for a photo op. Let me ask you this. We share one thing in common. We are White Privileged. My father was a lawyer and a judge in illinois. We know what your dad did. Do you have any sense that privilege has isolated and put you in a cave to a certain extent as it put me and lots of White Privileged people in a cave and that we have to work our way out of it to understand the anger and the pain particularly black people feel in this country . No. Listen to you. Wow. No. I dont feel that at all. The country was grappling with racial unrest and that is what the president says . Yeah. I would say you and most of the rest of america would not be surprised by that quote. He is not shown sensitivity on the issues from the beginning and made it clear he doesnt believe there is systemic racism or any sort of White Privilege in this country. This just confirms what people know. I am not saying it is not abhorrent and it is a terrible short coming in a president of a big diverse nation like this. You know, the other piece when we are in the middle of the pandemic, i think that is even more damning. There is no doubt that it really underscores his views on the issue of race. But he almost wears that as a badge of pride. You really drank the koolaid on this one. The president is making black lives matter a big part of his campaign message. You know, as you know talking a lot about confederate monuments. Race is a central issue in this presidency and it is the central issue, this and the coronavirus, in this presidency and in the campaign, more so than the coronavirus, before this woodward thing it was race. Scary black people. Protesters and on and on and on. When the president says things like i dont want the American People to panic. That is a tool he tries to use time and time again whether it is over suburbs or a caravan in 2018. This was a moment in the wide ranging interviews that bob woodward did where he was trying to have the president be self reflective for a moment and to see what the president would say. You saw the way that woodward approached that question. He doesnt normally let people speak. You see how he does respect woodward and he understands what weight woodward holds in the journalism world. To see how he answers it there. It is incredibly revealing of his world view and how there are things when it comes to coronavirus where what he says privately differs from publicly. You can see with an answer like that what the president says privately compared to publicly to voters when it comes to a matter that is very important. Race. That is something that people are concerned about. You can see how the president answers that when he knows he is doing an interview with someone writing a book about him. He may have been trying to impress woodward a bit. This is just the beginning of the book. There will be more fall out, more to come. No question. You read the book, you will see in the interviews that trump says it would really be an honor to get a good book from you. And then the next minute he is saying but it probably wont be. He was worried about it. You can see the thing throughout the book. But just remember, 18 interviews. That is hours and hours and hours of tape. Blasts the presis coronavirus response. He walked away. He didnt do a damn thing. Think about what he did not do. It is almost criminal. When we started our business we were paying an arm and a leg for postage. I remember setting up shipstation. One or two clicks and everything was up and running. I was printing out labels and saving money. Shipstation saves us so much time. It makes it really easy and seamless. Pick an order, print everything you need, slap the label onto the box, and its ready to go. Our costs for shipping were cut in half. Just like that. Shipstation. So give me a moment of talking to somebody going through this with fauci or somebody that kind of caused a pivot in your mind because it is clear just from what is on the Public Record that you went through a pivot on this to oh, my god the gravity is almost inexplicable and not explainable. I wanted to always play it down. I still like playing it down. I dont want to create a panic. A pediatric surgeon and the former acting administrator from medicare and Medicaid Services and the author of the upcoming book preventible. The president claimed he was downplaying the pandemic because he didnt want to create a panic. Isnt that the worst thing that you can do during a novel virus. The only medicine you have until there is a vaccine is public reaction. If he knew that the virus spreads when we share the air with each other, think about all of the things that you did and that we all did. Baby showers, parties, church choirs, games that we went to with crowds of people the number one thing he could have done is to warn us. I ask you because you were on the front lines of the pandemic in new york city squeezing critically ill patients into crammed spaces, risking your life without ppe. What goes through your mind when you hear the president of the United States acknowledge the virus was deadly and airborne early as february . Don, the president s comments are like a slap in the face and demonstrate a lack of regard for my life and my familys life and for all medical professionals like me. For allamericans this should be an Erin Brokovich moment where we realize we are breathing contaminated air. He decided to downplay it. You know, there is a study, andy. We had one of your tweets up. You were talking about your babies are too young. We talked about that with you a while ago. Really it was heartbreaking what you had to deal with in the interview that you gave us earlier. But andy, i want to ask you about this study from Columbia University showing if social distancing measures started two weeks earlier, it would have presented 82 of cases. You say if it were a corporation instead of a white house it could be considered negligent homicide. Why do you say that . Exactly what the doctor said, you know, this is an Erin Brokovich moment. We all saw the movie on dupont who had knowingly poisoned water and had put teflon in peoples pans for years. When you are aware of that and boeing is aware they have a problem with a plane. When nissan is aware they have a problem with a car. These are scandals that become criminal. Interesting. Bottom line, the president lied to the American People about the virus. How dangerous is it Going Forward . People need to trust the administration, what they say when it comes to vaccine or masks. There is a huge credibility problem with this white house. Now what . This demonstrates massive incompetence that cost hundreds of thousands of lives. The devastation, the grief and the loss is enormous. For americans, our civil action in response to the crime has to be voting him out. Thank you both. Be well. Again, doctor, so good to see you again. Good to see you. You know, she was on the front line and i have not seen you in quite a while. Take care of yourself doctor. Thanks so much. Sources telling cnn the president s soninlaw spoke with bob woodward to infuse honesty into the book but the president spoke with woodward 18 times. Plus joe biden speaking exclusively with cnn. It is disgusting. We learn this on a day that 190,000 americans dead and he knew this . When it comes to parenting, youre a pro. You know your kid doesnt step around puddles. Former top officials that worked in President Trumps inner circle painting a scathing picture of what it was like working for him. All laid out in woodwards new book. Former secretary mattis saying the president has no morale compass. Charlie dent joins us and amanda carpenter, the author of gas lighting america. Charlie, according to the book you have got mattis, tillerson, the president s former secretaries of defense, state, the director of National Intelligence unloading on the president. You were a republican in congress at the same time the men were serving in the administration. Did you know they felt this way . I had a sense, don all three of them had serious misgivings about the president. I should say secretaries mattis and tillerson and coates were three of Donald Trumps best appointments. I knew the men had misgivings. They were certainly stressed. You know, this is the emperor has no clothes moment. Always worse than we think. For these guys to say that the president cant tell the difference between a lie and the truth. No moral compass. Dangerous and unfit. I appeal to these men who are very fine men. To discuss these concerns that they have publicly, prior to the election. I think the American Public needs to hear this. These Horror Stories have been expressed for some time. We have known it. Don, you probably talked to the chief of staff. I think we shouldnt be surprised by what we are seeing but we have it in print and in direct quotes. I dont know. It may not affect any votes but i think we need to hear from them directly before the election. Amanda, woodward said that coates believed putin had something on President Trump because there was no explanation for his behavior. We are talking about the director of National Intelligence believing there had to be compromise. That there had to be compromise to say that. Really . There is a pattern here from a lot of the high level officials. When they decide to speak out, and they do in various degrees. They all paint a picture of chaos. They all eventually come to the conclusion they cannot help trump. He does what he wants to do. They give him advice. He may agree to it. They get undermined and blocked out and cant be successful. Eventually they throw up their hands and leave. That is a tragic assessment to take from all of the high level, experienced people that want to help them and find out they cant. I want to play, charlie, another exchange between mattis and coates from the book, another exchange between them. Yeah. That is what i said. It is a quote. This is not good. I have people talking to me. He says this is not good mattis said. Maybe at some point we are going to have to stand up and speak out. There may be a team we have to take collective action, possibly. Yeah. There may. He is dangerous. He is unfit. I mean could now still be that time do you think . Absolutely, don. I do believe and i have the highest respect for secretary mattis and dan coats, great people. I think this is the time that they need to share with the public their experiences with this president. You know, and by the way this is in the aftermath of the Jeffrey Goldberg atlantic story the president was making dispare acknowledging comments about service members, calling them terrible names like losers. I think it is imperative they stand up and say this. Secretary mattis, i believe President Trump made the reference to them being effin effing pwords. Is anybody shocked that he said these things and couldnt comprehend the notion of service, to think of things larger than themselves and that is why they serve. I mean he does not seem to get it. Bottom line they should speak up and speak up now. You know we have known this for some time. I am not completely shocked by any of this but more people need to hear it and they can inform their voting decision. Amanda, we talked to you abou
