They introduced a security plan in the capital that involved closing key roads around the president ial administration and key buildings. One top hushi official saying they went to the military and said you have to reopen roads for the sake of the people in sanaa, you are blocking many of the main streets. Apparently the huthis claimed they were attacked and defended themselves. Thats the story president the president s supporters give. He started this as a material, its been a long escalating crisis for weeks. Were hearing from the Administration Minister saying she appeals for International Intervention to calm this down. Theres a third concern, too. While they do appear to be faltering or grasps at mediation between the government and huthis theres a third Party Tropical the former party. Theres concerns they may step in or swing the balance of power. Effectively it seems this morning that power in yemen is being decided on the streets. And one word being used by the information minister was shes concerned what theyre seeing unfold been them is a form of coup or attempted coup. A bid to seize power. A march planned for today in germany by an antiislamic group has been canceled due to an isis threat against one of the organizers. Police in dresden received information about, a quote here, a threat against right wing europeans, against the islam situation of the movement pegida. The same day almost 100,000 marched in demonstrations and demonstrations against the movement. For more, i want to bring in peter schneider, columnist and author of the book berlin now. He joins me live from berlin via skype. So we heard the rally was canceled because of the terrorist threat. The fact it was canceled due to a terrorist threat would that help their cause . Thats right. Probably there would have been even more participants today if they would have allowed the demonstration. But they decided not to rally. It was not clear if it was forbidden or their own decision. Obviously since the Charlie Hebdo attack i think that Angela Merkel wants to crack down on the movement. She thinks its xenophobic of course. How does she clamp down on pegida without blocking or restricting freedom of speech . They all changed the tone after the murders in paris. Before that event, there was really a media hype in germany ive seen theyre saying theyre not fascists kpeen phobe. Of course if you call me a kpeen xenophobia and nazi i will not talk to you. Now some investigations have come out, and they the picture quite different picture of the group. There are for sure some nazis and hooligans taking part. The vartst majority is not about islam, but its about kind of rage again the government. Its a different thing. Of course the government should back what is this . Something we dont know, we dont accept. They dont talk to us. Okay then. Pegid, pegida as you said say theyre not racist not xenophobic. I found that surprising given what they believe. Would you agree with them . Do you think this is about a lot more than citizen phobiae citizen phobe why . I dont agree with them because i couldnt march where you dont see colored phase. This is not my people for sure. I think we have to deal with them. This is people who has almost never voted. In the United States we had the problem that the march of voting goes down and down. We are close to 5 of 50 of people who do vote. In areas about 50 . There is a social phenomenon. And the politicians have to deal with it instead of just you know shouting at them. And actually thats what they do now. I saw yesterday a talk show where one of the leaders of the movement was nobodys brilliant with pegida but she was expressing herself. You see its not cynical, its to too easy a label. Live from berlin. A recap, pegida did have a rally, but it was canceled because of an alleged terrorist threat. Peter, thank you. Thank you. Ukraines military says it has regained full control of donetsk airport. Rebels had seized it a few weeks ago in their fight to control parts of Eastern Ukraine. The fighting comes as many march for peace in kiev on sunday. Ukraines president and Prime Minister were at the rally held in the memory of the 13 passengers killed when shelling hit their bus near donetsk. For more on the situation in ukraine, were joined from washington, d. C. The expert in these matters from american university. Lets start with the airport in donetsk. The control towers clapped, term collapsed, terminals and runways beyond recognition. What is the significance of the airport . Why is it so important to both sides . So far the airports been used by the Ukrainian Military over the past year to launch bombardments of donetsk and its surrounding areas. And thats why the rebels have been trying so hard to retake it. And it sound like they almost succeeded. And now the Ukrainian Army sounds like its launched the counterattack. And its reporting that its retaken the airportment so the the battle lines are back to where they were for the past several months. They may be back to where they were but the ukrainian president on sunday said Ukrainian Forces would retake separatist regions in the east. Why now . Whats the calculation . Is it because russia is hurting economically, the price of oils down it sounds like it although its ultimately difficult to see how the Ukrainian Army is actually going to achieve this goal. They failed miserably over the past year. And its unlikely that things will turn in their favor now because the previous mobilizations that took place in ukraine in order to send troop to fight in the east met with protests all over the country. And its hard to see if the situation is going to change dramatically. I think this is more of a p. R. Tactic than it is a serious plan. So do you think this will be some kind of escalation or tell settle into this an elevated level of conflict if you like, between both sides with slins caught in the middle . Civilians caught in the middle . I think unfortunately this is whats going to happen. It looks like if the airport has been retaken, the battle lines one drawn again where they were before. And i dont see the ukraineian army has the organization or the wherewithal to make a major breakthrough. I think unfortunately its more of the same in the coming weeks and months. The problem is we had the truce between both sides last year which never went into effect the collapse. And now the reports that Russian Forces are amassing once again on the border testing new weapons. It seems despite putins troubles he has continued to the rebel separatists. The russians have been supporting them for the past few months. At least morally. Its still unclear whether Russian Troops are on eastern or southeastern ukrainian territory. Its unclear whether the russian army is actually amassing on the border. Most of news is out of kiev. A lot of strange news has been coming out of kiev the past few months. So i guess well have to wait and see for satellite imagery and for the osce which is the only International Organization on the ground and has failed to actually corroborate massive incursions into ukrainian territory. Yeah. It is always difficult. It is always sometimes impossible to know whats happening especially in the east there. Thanks for being with us. We appreciate it. Thank you. Okay. Literally as i speak, pope francis is flying home now after a rainy and windy weekend in the philippines. Children, you see them in yellow they performed for the pope at the airport in manila while he said his goodbyes. As with the trip we saw scores of people excited. Somecroixing really who gathered to catch a glimpse of the pope. Thousands of people lining the streets, you see, while the popes motorcade, the possibly mobile was zooming pope mobile was zooming down the street. He waved and got close to the delighted crowd. We have more on the popes trip including the huge mass attended by millions. Reporter as steady surging rain fell from the heavens, they came in the millions. [ bell ] reporter gathering to bear witness to papal history and celebrate mass with the man they believe represent the son of god. Pope francis arrived wearing a plastic poncho. The same worn by the faithful whod been standing in the mud waiting patiently for hours. Welcome cheers ] reporter its been 20 years since a pope visited the philippines. Home to the Third Largest catholic population in the world. The last was Pope John Paul ii in 1995 when five million parishioners attended mass. And while authorities believed that record would be surpassed, the wet weather may have dampened numbers but not spirits. Reporter continuing his message of helping the poor and preserving the family the 78yearold pontiff delivered his homily in english. This time focusing on children. We need to care for our young people not allowing them not condemning them to life on the streets. Reporter a theme touched on earlier when the pope addressed those at the Oldest University in manila. He was asked why to children have to suffer, before she broke down. From the outfit pope francis said he would be a pastor on the visit and didnt disappoint. Warming the hearts of so many in a country that has endured so much. I feel ecoat ittic. Its ecstatic. Its overwhelming. I want to pray and laugh. I dont wait to see the pope in person. Reporter if the Catholic Church was concerned about a disconnect with the congregation pope francis certainly brought many of those sheep back to the flock. For the millions that have gathered in the rain his visit a mission of mercy and compassion has united the countrys faithful. [ cheers ] after a 90 minute mass of reverence and reflection the crowd erupted again with pope mania. As he said his final farewells blessing the adoring public the pontiff stopped the pope mobile several times to kiss children. A demonstration of love for people whose unwavering devotion they give in return. Cnn, manila. It was quite the turnout. Yeah. He can certainly sell out. Now to the middle east. Hezbollah says an israeli air strike inside syria has killed at least six people. It happened in syrias golan heights. The group says the son of a deceased hezbollah commander was among the dead. Heres our nick paton walsh. Reporter what we know is significant. That is according to a hezbollah statement, israeli helicopters used rockets to hit a patrol of hezbollah fighters that were inside syria. The fighters are fighting alongside the syrian regime. And six hezbollah fighters were killed as a result of those explosions. Now a source close to hezbollah tells me that among those six dead is a man in his early 20s. Deeply significant because hes the son of one of hezbollahs most notorious commanders. The fact that israel is able to hit key leadership like this if in fact they knew that was their target shows potential for intelligence being quite good on israels side. The question is what is hezbollahs reaction. A fragile peace between lebanon and israel. Hezbollah key to that. We are, of course expecting some sort of reaction from them public publicly, some statement about this. All eyes watching as to whether they have the resources to retaliate against israel. They are engaged on a number of fronts across the middle east now assisting other shia militia or governments and deep concern over potential escalation of yet another attack of france in this region. A big story that keeps going. Theres been a lot of criticism this year. Earlier i spoke to kim serafin, editor of in touch weekly about the favorite films and those which did not make the list. Kim, the Oscar Nominations are out. And theres a lot of talk about those who didnt get one. In particular the cast and director of selma. Every year people miss out. Is this any different . Yeah, youre right. Every year there are snubs. Thats always a fun thing to talk about, the snubs and surprises. This year i think theres a big issue here. A lot of people expected selma to get more nominations. Did get nominated for best picture, but it didnt get best director. And this would have been historic the first africanamerican female to be nominated. Would have been nice to see a female nominated. There havent been very many female nominations. One fail winner one female winner in the past. Angelina jolie didnt get nominated for unbroken. And the performance as king king he didnt get nominated. It was across the board, it seemed it missed the mark. Looking at the nominees, what people are talking about, people on twitter, all the nominees all the acting nomeries nominees are white. Theres a lack of diversity that people are upset about. Especially because last year 12 years a slave dominated. Seems a stark contrast from last year. One of the issue around selma is the portrayal of president johnson. This weekend the New York Times columnist wrote this there was no need for duvernay to diminish lbj, the director given that the Civil Rights Movement will not have advanced women him. There were vile white villains. There was no need to create a faux one. Is there one of the reasons for the snub . It could have been. Obviously the historical inaccuracies have been talked about. There were opeds written about them. This happens every year with the oscars especially if its a true story. Its campaigning, like a political race. People campaign they throw thing at different film out there because of whether the story is true. I mean, this goes back to a beautiful mind. Even think about that film. Anything about a true story. Theres always going to be charges against it. It could have been as simple as the screeners of the movie not getting out to the guilds in time. The studio didnt get the screeners of the movie out to people in the directors guild, Screen Actors Guild in time. They did send them to the oscars. And when you miss the mark with a lot of the guilds didnt get nominated for the guild unemployments, by the oscars it kind of had guild nominations, by the oscars, it kind of had missed the mark. A great movie despite the oscar snub. One movie this was not snubbed, american sniper. Six nominations. That may have helped it break pretty Big Box Office records. A huge opening this weekend for american sniper. Enormous. Of course starring Bradley Cooper who famously gained 40 pounds of muscle for the role. Yeah huge opening weekend. Made about 90 million for the threeday weekend. Estimated to make 105 million for the fourday weekend. Breaking all sorts of Martin Luther king weekend records, january records, beating avatars record from january. 8 million, beating 68 million, beating the kevin hart opening movie, 48 million. The best Clint Eastwood opening ever. It goes on and on. The amount of money this movie is making. This is the kind of money you see made in summer movies. The 4th of july moves. Not normally a january movie making 100 million. This is enormous. And this obviously help its oscar chances, too. I think this is momentum for this movie. Again, another great movie to catch up on. Finally happy birthday to betty white. There was a special tribute for this 93yearold from her costars. Yeah. Betty white, she keeps getting younger. Doesnt seem like she gets older. Huge birthday tribute for betty white. And theres a video of it. Lets take a look. [ applause ] happy birthday, betty [ cheers ] yes, thats betty white celebrating her birthday. Like every 93yearold celebrates their birthday. A flash mob of hula dancers on the set. This is great. I love. Shes clapping along and dancing and having a blast. And you know she just again, gets award after award after award. And she gets better every year. Cant wait for her next tv series and award. I love betty white. But she does look older. Okay, thank you. Kim serafin in l. A. Thank you very much. Partly the reason they did the hula is because every day betty white is greeted by her assistant on the set of hot in cleveland doing the hula. I did not know that.
