Hello to our viewers to the United States, i am john king in washington, this is cnn, we are closing a big workweek as america is reopening. Well hear from the president on a topic of concerns to all of us here around the world and the United States, the race to find a vaccine. The president is introducing his team what the white house calls operation war speed. He predicts a vaccine by the start of next year. His own experts say that would be a miracle pace. You can see the daily reminder of how urgently the world needs the vaccine. 1. 7 cases here in the United States. Soon to be 86,000 americans dead. New warnings of the virus and the Counter Measures in place to guide the 50 states reopening experience. The fda says the abbott lab tests, the one being used by the white house should not be trusted. Where ever you are watching, unlocking is happening outside your door. Maralago, the president s resort will open this weekend. As we told you any moment well hear from the president of the United States, lets get straight to the white house. Cnns john harmon and elizabeth cohen. John, the president of the United States is rolling out his Leadership Team of what he calls operation war speed, what else are we looking for today . Thats the main thing we are k looi looking for. That would be something eagerly anticipated of the two leaders hes going to roll out a farmer s hes going to roll out a farmer s hes going to roll out a farmer s hes going to roll out a farmer s forchlforchmer pharmaceutical. There will be one or more vaccine candidates thatll come through many in development right now. The question is when will they be available for use. Gottlieb says we may get vaccine emergency base as early as september. Thats different for mass production for the American People. The president talked about a goal of November December for the first mass production of vaccines but we dont know if they can hit that goal. As you said in the outset, 12 to 13 months is what Anthony Fauci have been saying. In february is not 12 months anymore. Thats a little less than that. Elizabeth cohen, i want to listen first to dr. Fauci and rick barr, the farmwhistle blow thats shifted to another job, he had an issue of how all that was handled. Listen to dr. Fauci and rick barr talking about their realistic idea to a vaccine and how quickly can we produce it . Late fall or early winter, there is no guarantee that the vaccine is going to be effective. You can have everything that you think is in place and you dont induce the kind of immune response that turns out to be infected. This scenario or early next spring when vaccines become available. There is no one company can produce enough, a lot of optimism is swirling around 12 or 18 months time frame if everything goes differently. One of the reasons john harwood noticed, the head of the Army Material command. If we needed to ramp up production whether it is weapons or clothing or whether people who could do things quickly. If they find a candidate that they can mass produce quickly. If you heard what dr. Fbrigh says if it goes perfectly. It never goes perfectly. We currently have a Clinical Trial. How many vaccines are vaccinating heallife human beings that actually works. There are three companies that are doing this in china. Three in the u. S. And one in the united kingdom. And then there is a noveal and pfizer and this was weeks ago. They vaccinated dozens or hundreds of people. They need to eventually vaccinate no vaccinate thousands or tens of thousands. I have yet to hear anyone who thinks it is realistic where well have a vaccine by the oen of this year. Elizabeth cohen and john harwood, we are standing by for the president. Lets discuss another important warning. The cdc is warning the public to be on the look out for children. It is similar to kawasaki syndrome. So far cases have been reported in 18 states. Thank you so much for being with us, this is sort of one of these length shocks if you will. We learned so much about the virus as we go through them. At the beginning, children were less vulnerable and whats the indication now and when you see these cases, what are you seeing, how prevalent and what are the warning signs . Thank you for highlighting this. We have seen unexpected amount of severe disease on the east coast here of what we have told in china and on the west coast of the u. S. Today we care for 300 children with positive testing and symptoms. About a quarter of those have needed to be hospitalized. 75 have been hospitalized and 20 of them needed critical care. This is before of the emergent of this new inflammatory disease that we are seeing now. High temperatures lasting five days and rash and dry cracked lips and swelling in the hands and feet and redness in both eyes. What should a parent be looking for and how is it different than what they may have thought early on when they were told these were the main symptoms with covid. Sure, we had seven of these confirmed cases, they do present slightly different ways. Over arching theme is fever. If you see fever thats higher and persistent, that would be a first thing to take note of. Thats a little different. The kid that do look like kawasaki may have things like redeyes, or their lips cracked. What we are seeing a Different Group that hasse ve severe abdo pain. So the respiratory complications do not seem to be a big part of this and many of our children we are finding out had an exposure or symptoms a few weeks before and are coming in with later symptoms. The cdc just put out a new alert on this, Late Development had people concerned. There are limited information currently available of risk factors and treatments for misc is what they call it. Be on the look out for this from the cdc. A, how does it help and in the limited cases we know, is there something that links these Children Together or is it mo more random . Do they have underlining conditions or is it a random event . This new covid is a little different in that the prior group of children that we have been admitting up until this time about 16 of them have an underlying illness and ma40 of them do not. More of them are well children. Many of us believe this is an inflammatory or post infectious. It could be this out of control or disregulated inflammatory response is more common in a kid with a normal medical history. Based on what we know right now and it may change of the normal of the opening of school year and at the end of the summer, are you learning enough about this to understand is it safe to send children back to school, is it contagious among children or something we need to study as we go through the summer . This is newly emerged, we are working with every single doctor across the country and internationally, we are all putting our heads and cases together to get an answer to what is driving this, the best treatments and we commend and once we have those answers, well be in a better to position to make that you are all asking and we are asking ourselves. We want to make the right decisions based on data. Dr. Debi aasi, if you learn more, please keep in touch with us. Thank you. Will do. Up next, texas is reopening even as its case count grows. By the end of this week, at least 48 states will be partially opened. You see connecticut and massachusetts is the gray exceptions and theyre getting ready to move forward. Casinos and hair salons and movie theaters and Fitness Centers and in montana and new york state, five upstate areas have reached the benchmark to reopen. Reporter the governor has made it clear that hes going to have a regional approach to reopening. Thats what we heard. Just when he made that announcement a short while ago states beaches will be reopening by memorial day weekend. New jersey and connecticut and delaware, beaches will be reopening as well. An eastern regional approach when it comes to that within the state, also a regional approach when it comes to upstate verses down state in new york. They extended the stayathome order until may 28th. Upstate here whein places like binghamton, where you see things are opening up. Just spoke to a man who owns as coffee shop who says hes ready for reopening. We think it is important to social distancing and working together and wearing a mask and having supplies on hands and ask contractors if they feel comfortable about coming to work. If they dont, we respect that. I think it is going to be a slow start as much as everybody is eager to get out there and do everything. Doing in phases is a healthier approach. Going in phases, john, theyll be following the science. A lot of Business Owners tell us they are eager to open but also following the science in order to go forward. John. Jason carol, gratefully you are on the ground there watching as it begins. Texas is seeing the highest numb numbers after it officially opens. Texas saw 58 deaths and new cases of 1,448. The nations Third Largest state is a case study. As the country debates what are acceptable risks as more and more people are heading back to work. Lets take a look at the metrics first. This is when the governor announced he was going to ease, this is when the restriction worries from the state of texas. April 22nd, foot traffic in texas is 54 , people are getting out because they are allowed to. 53 jumped in hobby and toy stores and Family Clothing Stores and shoe stores and Womens Clothing stores, bars is not so much. Up and down. Most are not reopened. Gift shops a little bit of traffic. Too. Hobby stores and clothiing stores. Whats happening to texas . Phase one reopening back here on may 1st, a week latelater, on m 8th, you are looking at the case count going up on the end. You can argue more people are going about, thats relatively flat. You can say theyre handling this right and where it began. This is relatively flat. You are watching it play out. Lets take a look at it here. This is the day they reopened, curbside retail first. Phase one began, went up to 1142 cases. May 8th with 1219 cases. Thats a bit of an increase, lets put it into perspective. Whats acceptable level of risk. May 8th and may 9th and may 10th, the last several days, nu number one, all of these days, a thousand kays or more. Do people in texas say it is too risky or staying relatively flat and people say thats not right but we are managing the reopening. Thats the big question in texas. Lets get to ed lavandera, hes live until san antonio. Can you do this in a way that keep things static or does the risk go way up . Reporter thats what everyone here is juggling with. The governor here in texas is under immense political pressure to open up the economy of the Republican Party here in texas. There is all of this happening as there is a great deal of concerns in big city like san antonio and houston and dallas where those cases continue to go up. Reopening here in texas started two weeks ago started to get a sense of those trend lines and how they are shaping up. As you have done a good job going over that. Deaths and the numbers of overall cases going up. The governor here in texas is looking at more than just that, looking at the daily infection rate as well as the hospitalization rate. The hospitalization rate trended slight liloly lower the last co of weeks. Everything seemed to plateau for the most part. All the other medical indicators we are looking at. Not that we are making progress in turning the tide, making all of these numbers go down in a positive way, but at that plateau level, the fact that the matter here, john, the push to reopen texas economy, borrowing any incredibly medical data is hard to imagine anything is going to turn the tide of what state officials here in texas are doing. This morning the governor here in texas released an online video touting his effort to reopen the texas economy here. We are seeing all of that and it would take some jarring medical data to turn the tide here in the way the economy is being opened. Well continue to look. Well look at everyday and every week. Cnns Kristine Romans bring us the number. John, the American Consumer drives twothirds. Consumers stayed home during this selfisolation. Americans are not buying stuff. This is the worse number we have ever seen. It doubled what we saw back in march which was a record then. Clothing and accessory stores down 90 . Electronics down 60 . Gas down 30 . Gas is so cheap and it is usually good for consumers, people right lane not driving so thats not a big help there. Overall this shows you an American Consumers that really pulled inward in april. You are starting to see Stores Slowly beginning to reopen. Retail sales could perk up a little bit in the month of may. This has been devastating for the big american retailers who rely on that foot traffic, Neiman Marcus filed for bankruptcy and so as j. Crew. There is a jc penney possibly bankruptcy right now. There has been winners as well, target and kroger and amazon and walmart, people are buying their necessities online and with Curbside Pickup so there are places in retails that have done well.
