CNNW Early Start With Christine Romans And Dave Briggs July 31, 2019

Last night things got a little testy on stage. The ideological gap between progressives and moderates an overriding theme on the first night of the cnn democratic debates with ten candidates struggling for attention last night at the fox theater in detroit. Moderates trained their fire on the two progressives topping the polls senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, seeming to circle the wagons, avoiding attacks on each other. At times it seemed like the adults taking on the jv squad playing defense. One of the key issues, sanders proposed take on the Health Care System and health care for all. Watch this debate. Congressman delaney just referred to it as bad policy, and previously hes called the idea political suicide that will just get President Trump reelected. What do you say to congressman delaney . Youre wrong. [ laughter ] [ cheers ] right now we have a dysfunctional Health Care System, 87 million uninsured or underinsured, 500,000, 500,000 americans every year going bankrupt because of medical bills, 30,000 people dying while the Health Care Industry makes tens of billions of dollars in profit. Five minutes away from here, john, is a country. Its called canada. They guarantee health care to every man, woman, and child as a human right im right about this. We can create a universal Health Care System to give everyone basic look for free. And i have a proposal to do it. We dont having to around and be the party of subtraction and telling half the country who has private Health Insurance that their Health Insurance is illegal. My dad, the union electrician, loved the health care he got from the ibw. He would never want someone to take that away. Lets be clear about this we are the democrats. We are not about trying to take away health care from anyone. Thats what the republicans are trying to do. Enthusiastic, energetic, often loud sanders also taking on john hick looper, the former governor and mayor arguing hes one of the few running with executive experience. I think if were going to force americans to make these radical changes, theyre not going to go along. Throw your hands up. But you havent whoa i can do it. But you havent implemented the plans. Us governors and mayors have to pick up the pieces which suddenly the government is supposed to take over all these responsibilities, and theres no preparation. The details on what you cant just spring a plan on the world and expect it to succeed. And the candidates generally avoided cheap shots. But there were still a few notable zingers as sanders and warren fended off the centrist attacks. Listen. So i think democrats win when we run on real solutions, not impossible promises. When we run on things that are workable, not fairytale economics. Senator warren . I dont understand why anyone goes to the trouble of running for president of the United States just to talk about what we cant do and shouldnt fight for. I dont get it. Can you guarantee those Union Members that the benefits under medicare for all will be as good as the benefits that their representatives, their union reps, fought hard to negotiate . Two things. They will be better because medicare for all is comprehensive. It covers all Health Care Needs. For Senior Citizens it will include dental care, hearing aids, and eyeglasses. You dont know that, bernie i do know it, wrote the damn bill. The Sanders Campaign so confident in that comeback that it already is selling i wrote the damn bill stickers as a fundraiser on its website. Which may tell you how spontaneous the line may have been. For Pete Buttigieg last night was not about moderates versus progressives but right versus wrong. The mayor of south bend knows hes going to make the cut for the next round of debates. He has a sizable war chest so hes not desperate. He seemed determined to separate himself from the pack by staying above the political fray. Watch. It is time to stop worrying about what the republicans will say. [ applause ] if its true that if we embrace a far left agenda, theyre going to say were a bunch of crazy socialists. If we embrace a conservative agenda, theyre going to say were a bunch of crazy socialists. So lets stand up for the right policy, go out there, and defend it. Thats a policy im putting forward. Buttigieg also challenged republicans to stand up to President Trump, and he this warning for those who chose to look the other way today they are supporting naked racism in the white house or at best silent about it. If you are watching this at home and you are a republican member of congress, consider the fact that when the sun sets on your career and they are writing your story, of all the good and bad things you did in your life, the thing you will be remembered for is whether in this moment with this president you found the courage to stand up to him, or you continue to put party over country. [ applause ] it was montana governor steve bullocks first time on the big debate stage. He did his best to make up for lost time. He cast himself as a more pragmatic progressive. Focused on the economy, and against dark money in politics. On immigration he said hes against decriminalizing border crossings. I think this is part of the discussion that shows how often these debates are detached from peoples lives. Weve got 100,000 people showing up at the border right now. If we decriminalize entry, if we give health care to everyone, well have multiples of that. Dont take my word, that was president obamas Homeland Security secretary that said that. The biggest problem right now that we have with immigration, its donald trump. Hes using immigration to not only rip apart families but rip apart this country. Marianne williamson may be a long shot to make to the next debate, but theres no doubt she has americas attention. Shes a political novice and author with an unconventional perspective. And she stood out on stage as she was flanked by career politicians. She had a frank response to a question about reparations for slavery. Listen to this. About 500 billion in financial assistance, its 500 billion, 200 to 500 billion payment of debt that is owed. That is what reparations is. We need some deep truth telling. We need to recognize that when it comes to the economic gap between blacks and whites in america, it does come from a great injustice that has never been dealt with. As for what her party must do to defeat President Trump, she said this this is part of the dark underbelly of american society. [ cheers ] the racism, the bigotry, and the entire conversation that were having rear tonight. If you think any of this wonkiness is going to deal with this dark psychic force of the collective hatred that the president is bringing up in this country, im afraid that the democrats are going to see some very dark days. On a crowded stage, airtime is everything, of course. Elizabeth warren wound up with the lions share. Look at the breakdown. She spoke for 18 minutes and 11 seconds. Bernie sanders was second with 17 minutes, 31 seconds. Then theres a big dropoff to third place with Pete Buttigieg, 14 minutes, nine seconds. Senator warren may have scored the most face time, but it was Marianne Williamson whos breakout moments made her the most searched of the ten candidates during the debate in 49 of 50 states. She was also the candidate trending most heavily nationwide on twitter. According to trends 24, as of midnight, williamson, the only one to beat the bachelorette finale followed by delaney, sanders, warren, and ryan. Bachelorette finale says so much about america. Ten more democrats take the stage tonight including joe biden and kamala harris. The second night of the cnn democratic debates all starts at 8 00 p. M. Tonight live again from detroit only on cnn. Set was beautiful it was gorgeous. Fox theater was lovely. Did a great job. Look forward to more tonight. As the canadian were getting ready to debate, north korea launched two more missiles. Wheeeeeee believe it geico could save you 15 or more on Car Insurance. Since my dvt blood clot i was thinking. Could there be another around the corner . Or could it turn out differently . I wanted to help protect myself. My doctor recommended eliquis. Eliquis is proven to treat and help prevent another dvt or pe blood clot. Almost 98 percent of patients on eliquis didnt experience another. And eliquis has significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. Eliquis is fda approved and has both. Dont stop eliquis unless your doctor tells you to. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. If you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily. And it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Whats around the corner could be surprising. Ask your doctor about eliquis. They have businesses to grow customers to care for lives to get home to they use stamps. North korea, north korea firing two shortrange Ballistic Missiles into the sea of japan according to the south Korean Military. It is the second missile test by pyongyang in the last week. Cnns ivan watson is monitoring developments live in hong kong. Here we are getting ready for a democratic democratic debate, and this yeah. This is a surprise for the korean peninsula, two shortrange Ballistic Missiles, according to south korea, that were fired from north koreas eastern coast. And its the second such Short Range Ballistic Missile launch in less than a week. North korea seems to be stepping up the frequency of these missile launches. It broke a selfimposed moratorium on may 9th with a first round of shortrange Ballistic Missiles. Perhaps more striking is that this took place just one month after the historic meeting between President Trump and north Korean Leader kim jongun on the Demilitarized Zone when the two leaders met with the south korean president and made promises to start to organize bilateral working negotiations which seem to have not happened yet and seem to be behind the promised schedule that President Trump offered. So some sabre rattling coming from the north koreans. After they launched missiles last week, they said this was a warning to the South Koreans. They seem to be unhappy about the possibility of another round of annual bilateral u. S. South Korean Military exercises that are anticipated. And perhaps the fact, military analysts say, that south korea is acquiring f35a u. S. Made stealth fighters. All of this going to show that despite the trump diplomacy with pyongyang, north korea showing it can still make trouble and still be dangerous in the region. Well see what the president if the president has anything to tweet or say about this. In the past he has downplayed events like this. Ivan watson, thank you so much. The last time the fed cut rates all the way back december, 2008, when the u. S. Was in the depth of the financial crisis. At that moment, that quarter, gdp shrank 8. 4 . The Unemployment Rate was 7. 3 and rising fast, went all the way to 10 . The dow on the day of that last rate cut was down 33 for the year, and the s p was down 37 year to date. Thats what happened the last time the fed felt it had to help the economy and cut rates. Compare that to today. Gdp, a solid 2. 1 . The jobless rate below 4 . Stocks near record highs. The s p is up 20 this year. Another big difference between then and now, a president insulting, cajoling, and rage tweeting the fed and demanding lower Interest Rates. I think the economys so strong that nothings going to stop us. But the fed could have made it a lot easier. I would like to see a large cut, and id like to see immediately the quantitative fighting s
